General Mills-owned cereal brand Lucky Charms is in the entertainment business. I’m happy to see the packaged goods brand recognize it and act on it. According to The Drum, Lucky the Leprechaun has dropped his debut album, “Magically Delicious,” which is now available across all major streaming platforms but promoted exclusively on Spotify. The album […]

Bud Light Introduces A New Generation To A Classic Strain of Comedy

Serial content is the best content. Satirical serial content that resurrects a classic ad campaign from the 90s whilst skewering social media? Even better. Case in point, Bud Light has introduced seven new “Internet Heroes of Genius” spots on their YouTube channel. Bud Light has long had a well-honed sense of humor. What’s changed is […]

Remembering Argentina’s 9/11 With A Little Help from An Agency Friend

Advertising that attempts to appeal to the lowest common denominator is often nothing more than mental pollution. It’s also the most common type of advertising in the world and the central reason that the industry has a bad name. Far away, on the other end of the scale, there’s important work being done to inform […]

Make Sure Your Brand’s Audio Is In Tune

Do you recognize these sounds? Which brands do they represent? All of these brands carry a distinctive sound. Apple’s power up sound; it’s simple and elegant just like the brand. I can almost imagine Steve Jobs chanting this on one his meditative retreats. NBC’s three-note tag is a mnemonic. It helps you remember the brand […]

Spotify’s In-House Creative Team Is Raising The High-Bar

Spotify was named Ad Age’s “In-House Agency of the Year” in February. Once upon a time, no one paid attention to in-house agencies. Today, the designation is a real honor. Let’s take a look at some of Spotify’s creative output… The brand turned popular playlist RapCaviar into a sub-brand “that could meaningfully connect with artists […]

Watch the Voiceover Recording for an Ice Cream Ad Go Horrendously, Comically Wrong

Comic short films about the absurdity of the ad business have a proud history going back to Tim Hamilton’s brilliant Truth in Advertising. Here’s the latest one—director Tim Mason’s No Other Way to Say It, about an amusingly bleak voiceover recording session for an ice-cream commercial.

Trump’s “First Family” Look Is An Image That’s Hard To Beat

There are new and variable factors to the election this year, which makes it maddening and interesting at the same time. Without wanting to forward anyone’s political agenda, as advertising professionals, we do want to offer what insight we can about the use of advertising to win elections. Much has been made of Donald Trump’s […]

How to Make a Great Radio Ad, Now That You Know How to Make a Terrible One

The Radio Mercury Awards recently made a two-part video about “Things We Don’t Want to Hear in a Radio Ad.” In my writeup, I wanted to know what they do want to hear in radio ad. And dear God, they actually listened to me. (This may be the most influence I’ve ever had over anything. I am hyperventilating and should probably lie down.)

While I go mad with power, you should watch unshaven Mercury chief judge Jim Elliott explain what makes a good radio ad. His answer? “Undeniable human truth.” Kind of a tall order, but that just means good writing and sharp ideas that take advantage of the medium.

Thanks for the clarification, Jim! (That wasn’t sarcastic, I really do appreciate it.) The video also lists the reasons people should try for an award this year. “Skrilla” and “hooch,” presumably free, are among them.

And if you missed the “Things We Don’t Want to Hear in a Radio Ad” videos, check them out below.

Everything You Never Want to Hear in a Radio Ad, in Two Very Funny Videos

Jim Elliott, the new global chief creative officer of Arnold Worldwide, and voiceover artist Paul Guyet made these two amusing videos (in what looks like Michael’s house from GTA5) explaining how to win a 2015 Radio Mercury Award—by demonstrating all the terrible radio ad clichés that will guarantee failure.

Elliott (who’s also the chief Mercury judge this year) even has a “NO” button to make his disapproval absolutely clear. Guyet is clearly having a ball with his impressions, and some of them are frighteningly accurate. Yes, nightclub ads really do sound that rapey.

The side effects portion of video No. 1 introduced the phrase “anal snoring” to my lexicon, which I consider a plus. Video No. 2 is more of the same, with Elliott and Guyet taking on AutoTune, bad writing and yelling, and long website URLs.

After all this, I’d be interested to hear what they like about radio advertising, because the tropes these videos are crapping on represent about 99 percent of it. Hey guys, how about some examples of what wins a Mercury?

Submissions are being accepted now through April 6 for this year’s Radio Mercury Awards. Enter at RadioMercuryAwards.com.

Agency Stages Live Car Crash on the Radio as a Warning to Distracted Drivers

It's awards season, and the case studies keep rolling in. This one, from Jung von Matt in Germany, for a campaign to get drivers to stop talking on their mobile phones, should do well among radio judges who enjoy simulated violence for the greater good.

The agency set up a stunt during a live radio show (not during a commercial break) in which a person called in to request a song—and admitted he was driving on the highway. Of course, from there, it doesn't end well.

Mercury Awards Name 157 Finalists, Loads Audio Files To Show Site

I stopped leafing through award show annuals years ago, but I do like to listen to radio spots. Therefore, I appreciate the 2014 Radio Mercury Awards making the spots from their 157 finalists available online for all to hear.

There’s much worth listening to here and much of it is regional, so this is our first exposure to the work.

“This group of finalists all created stories to help develop their client’s brand and messaging,” notes Matt Eastwood, chief creative officer, DDB NY and Chief Judge for the 2014 Radio Mercury Awards.

“Radio continues to be an effective and strategic medium to build brand awareness and drive ROI, no matter the advertiser or marketer,” says Erica Farber, president and CEO of the Radio Advertising Bureau.

Finally, here’s a new twist on pizza advertising from Barton F. Graf 9000 in the Innovative Use of Radio category.
