W+K Amsterdam Calls on American Heroes for EA Sports

With the World Cup kicking off today in Brazil, W+K Amsterdam has a new campaign for EA Sport’s 2014 FIFA World Cup Brazil (out now on PS3 and Xbox360), aimed to “appeal to every gamer, and to every American with a star-spangled heart.”

The campaign calls on viewers to be “The next American hero” in a 75-second online spot as Team U.S.A. faces the “Group of Death” in Brazil. “The Next American Hero,” which also appears in 15 and 30-second online advertisement iterations, features a “team of soccer heroes representing a cross-section of American society” — such as an  astronaut, cowboy, tech entrepreneur and cheerleader — take the field for the US. Set to the song “Real American,” the spot is built around the idea that with 2014 FIFA World Cup Brazil, the fate of the US soccer team is in your hands. And odds are they’ve got a better chance at advancing past group stage than the real team. We’ve got credits following the jump. continued…

RTO+P, Sarah Harbaugh Seek to ‘Stop Dad Pants’ for Dockers

Red Tettemer O’Connell + Partners has a new campaign for Dockers centered around a call to “Stop Dad Pants.”

The new campaign, launched in anticipation of Father’s Day, includes two new spots — “Stop Dad Pants” and “Locker Room” — approaching the dad pants dilemma from different perspectives. In “Stop Dad Pants,” Sarah Harbaugh (wife of San Francisco 49ers head coach Jim Harbaugh, who also appears in the ad) offers a PSA-style plea to men everywhere to end the “shapeless, pleated tragedy that too many men find themselves in every day.” Sarah shares that she understands the issue, as Jim was afflicted by dad pants for years. The second half of the spot deals with how Dockers has the dad pants antidote. “Locker Room” features a similarly tongue-in-cheek, dad-humor driven motivational speech from former NFL coach Jon Gruden, who implores men to “make this dad thing look good.” Both spots end by directing viewers to Dockers.com/StopDadPants.

The campaign also features a social component, built around the #StopDadPants hashtag. Dockers fans who use the hashtag on Twitter or Instagram accompanied by photos of themselves in Dockers will be entered for a chance to win a trip to San Francisco and a pair of tickets to a 49ers game at Levi’s Stadium. Stick around for credits after the jump. continued…

Night Agency Puts Space on Your Face for Kiehl’s

Night Agency has a new online video for Kiehl’s that aims to gain attention for the brand’s men’s personal care products.

For the video, Night Agency attached a tube of Kiehl’s Oil Eliminator moisturizer “to a weather balloon that rises 23 miles in the air…fitted with cameras that showed the facial lotion hovering in space with the curvature of the Earth behind it,” reports the New York Times. A parachute was then deployed for the craft’s descent back to Earth. The craft spent about three hours in the air, before being retrieved by a team, which tracked the vehicle with GPS, around 90 miles away in a Pennsylvania field. After retrieving the bottle of moisturizer the team proceeds to apply it, thus putting space on their face.

“There’s a really limited subset of guys that read grooming blogs, and we absolutely want to be in those,” said Night Agency Executive Creative Director Evan Slater. “But we wanted to make sure that we were getting coverage from things like Popular Science and getting into the popular male conversation outside of the grooming world.”

The video itself ups the cheese factor on the stunt, with a tongue-in-cheek sense of humor exemplified by the “Face: The final frontier” text which opens the video. Cheesiness aside, “How To: Put Space on Your Face” is worth the 2:30 view time if you’re curious as to how exactly the Night Agency team pulled off the stunt. You can check it out above, and we’ve got credits after the jump. continued…

Adweek reports that Dove “hired Edelman Berland to interview 1,000 fathers ages 25-54” as research for the campaign. “Three-quarters of dads say they are responsible for their child’s emotional well-being,” said Rob Candelino, marketing vice president and general manager, Unilever’s skin care. “But only 20 percent see that in media.”

HUSH Shares the Power of Memories for Lyve

New York-based design agency HUSH wrote, directed and produced the above brand video for Lyve, a “highly-anticipated personal content solution.”

In the video, a father is seen unpacking moving boxes and discovers an old photo album. The mother, meanwhile, uses Lyve to synchronize photos and video in one location — the LyveHome. It’s a demonstration of how we used to collect and store memories, and how it has evolved with technology. In the process, Hush also demonstrates “the full range of capabilities for Lyve’s apps and the LyveHome, as the mother…utilizes Lyve to consolidate photos from various devices and cameras and effortlessly scrolls through them on all her devices, including a television.”

“Building a brand story around a scary proposition like losing cherished digital memories would have been an easy road to take – but Lyve is about so much more,” writes HUSH in a press release. “Instead, we worked with Lyve’s team to celebrate the way we capture, store and rediscover our personal digital content and to leverage the emotional impact of every photo, every video – every memory.” Stick around for credits after the jump. continued…

Horror Genre Informs Latest Wix Web Creation Campaign

While its recent TV spots have been fairly benign and dare we say, sappy, Wix, the brand that lets people build websites for free takes a detour with its latest ad above, which is inspired by of all things, horror films. Case in point, the opening moments recall Drew Barrymore’s classic opening sequence in Scream and is soon followed by the sounds of chainsaws, a Paranormal Activity-like sequence and more. Of course, the overall subject matter of the ad is a girl’s fear of building her own website about, uh, cupcakes. The never-ending screaming can get somewhat grating as the spot progresses, but us horror fans can appreciate the little wink at the genre, even if the minute-long effort is somewhat corny. Of course, one can only wonder how the spot would turn out if Rob Zombie put his imprint on it like he did with that somewhat creepy Woolite ad from a few years ago. Ah well, can’t win ’em all. Credits after the jump.

McCann NY, Lucky Charms Embrace the Rainbow

McCann New York and Lucky Charms have embraced the rainbow with a new social campaign for LGBT Pride Month.

The feel-good campaign, entitled “#LuckyToBe,” encourages people to use that hashtag to share what makes them unique and what makes them feel lucky. McCann’s accompanying video (featured above) introduces the hashtag while celebrating diversity. “We don’t all look the same, believe the same things, or love the same people. And that’s a good thing,” appears on screen in white text, accompanied by Lucky Charm’s colorful marshmallows. It’s a positive message, and people seem to be responding — including GLAAD, who posted about the campaign on their blog. You can see what people are saying using the #LuckyToBe hashtag on the campaign landing site, and stick around for credits after the jump. continued…

GSD&M Combines Drinking, Spearfishing for Pacifico

GSD&M has a new campaign for Pacifico, entitled “Yellow Caps,” set to roll out this summer.

“Yellow Caps” is a term “coined by bartenders and refers to Pacifico’s bright yellow bottle caps, which are easily identifiable in crowded beer coolers.” For GSD&M’s latest campaign they have utilized the iconic caps, with the underside used to engage consumers with printed GPS coordinates marking one of 21 incredible spots throughout Baja, mainland Mexico and on the Pacific coast of the U.S. Each cap also encourages consumers to visit the newly-designed DiscoverPacifico.com, where visitors can enter their GPS coordinates to “drop in to a unique locale and activity like spearfishing in Santa Maria Bay, surfing in Scorpion Bay or camping on Playa el Requesón.”

The initiative is designed as a tie-in to the agency’s new broadcast spots, which attempt to appeal to Pacifico drinkers’ sense of adventure. In “Spearfishing” (featured above), for example, a group of friends set out in a boat, drinking Pacifico and spearfishing. While you might question whether drinking and spearfishing are  the best combination, GSD&M make it appear fun. Nobody gets stabbed and the friends grill up the fish on the beach following their catch.

“Pacifico’s popularity has expanded significantly in the last five years; it is now available in all 50 states,” said Jim Sabia, chief marketing officer for Constellation Brands Beer Division, Pacifico’s exclusive U.S. importer. “This new campaign gives every Pacifico drinker the opportunity to  experience the Baja lifestyle that shapes the brand’s boundless spirit.” Credits after the jump. continued…

W+K Gets Animated in ‘Short Film’ for Nike

Back in April, we covered “Winner Stays,” part of W+K’s “Risk Everything” campaign for Nike, which feature some of the world’s best soccer talent and clocked in at over four minutes long. Now, with only three days to go until the 2014 World Cup kicks off, W+K is back with an even lengthier effort for Nike.

Like “Winner Stays,” the new spot, entitled “The Last Game,” features some of the best players in the world — only this time they’re animated and voiced by voice actors. The over five-minute long “short film” tells the story of a scientist who creates clones of the great players which remove risk-taking in favor of efficiency and decision-making abilities. The results on the game are disastrous, turning it into a complete bore. Brazilian legend Ronaldo decides to do something about it, and gets together a team of superstars, all now leading “normal” lives, to take on the clones in a sudden death match.

Somehow the lengthy “The Last Game” doesn’t feel as long as its predecessor. While the trend of calling long ads “short films” is a touch ridiculous, W+K comes closer to earning that title than most do with “The Last Game,” which, in addition to some fine animation, has a plot that convincingly tells a story that viewers (especially children) may actually feel compelled to follow to its conclusion. While “Winner Stays” felt like an idea drawn out past the point of effectiveness, “The Last Game” actually uses all of its extended run time in service of a story. Whether or not it’s the most effective way to market Nike, the results are certainly entertaining. In addition to the full-length online spot, the campaign also includes 30-second trailers and athlete-specific teasers, and will run for six weeks. We’ve got a full list of credits after the jump. continued…

Leo Burnett Satisfies Craving with ‘Hunter Gatherer’ for McDonald’s

Leo Burnett has unveiled the latest in their “Favorites” campaign for McDonald’s UK with a new spot entitled “Hunter Gatherer.”

“Hunter Gatherer” — which will appear in a 60-second version online (above) and a 40-second broadcast version — follows a man as he attempts to satisfy his pregnant partner’s food craving while their city is shutting down. He goes to several groceries and convenience stores, all of which are closed, just shutting down for the night, or don’t have what he’s looking for. Finally, the man spots a 24-hour McDonald’s. He returns, McDonald’s bag in hand, to his skeptical partner. When she opens the box, however, it’s filled with the pickles she’s craving. It’s a cute concept, and highlights McDonald’s’ “Hey, we never close” selling point in an imaginative way. (Although it does also raise the question: Can you really go to McDonald’s and order nothing but a box of pickles?) Stick around for credits after the jump. continued…

R/GA Reveals Epic World Cup Spot for Beats

With the World Cup a week away, the barrage of World Cup-themed ads isn’t showing any sign of slowing down, and this 5 minute spot R/GA put together for Beats might be the biggest one yet. Indeed, as Adweek writes, the spot seems to “Out-Nike Nike.”

Entitled “The Game Before The Game,” the ad tackles the pre-game rituals of stars such as Brazil’s star Neymar Da Silva Santos, Jr. His pre-game ritual involves talking with his father, whose inspiring pep talk is the heart of the ad. Also featured in “The Game Before The Game” are Spain’s Cesc Fabregas, who kisses the ring he received from his girlfriend precisely four times; Mexico’s prayerful Javier “Chicharito” Hernandez; and Uruguay’s Luis Suarez, who kisses a tattoo on his wrist of his children’s names. Elsewhere stars such as Bacaray Sagna, Bastian Schweinsteiger, Blaise Matudi, Daniel Sturridge, Jozy Altidore, Mario Gotze and Robin Van Persie can be seen slipping on their Beats headphones and doing their thing. Tthe spot is set to “Jungle” by Jamie N Commons & The X Ambassadors and st times takes on the feel of a music video, which makes a lot of sense given the brand. Interspersed with the players’ preparations are fans performing their own pre-game rituals. This includes a slew of celebrity cameos, such as Lil Wayne, Lebron James, Serena Williams, Stuart Scott, and Nikki Minaj. Check out the spot for yourself above, and stick around after the jump for partial credits. continued…

JWT Amsterdam Creates ‘A Piggy Bank for the Homeless’

With homelessness a growing issue in Amsterdam, JWT Amsterdam launched an awareness and fundraising campaign for the not-for-profit organization for the homeless Belangenbehartiging Amsterdamse Dak- en Thuislozen (BADT).

To raise both money and awareness for the organization JWT Amsterdam sourced mannequins, which they dressed in “shabby, used clothes,” installed a cut-out money slot in the head (made to resemble a piggy bank) and placed them around the city in situations similar to the homeless, with hand-written cardboard signs asking for donations to BADT. The provocative campaign got people’s attention, and was documented in the video above. At the end of the 90 second video, viewers are prompted to visit badt.nl and help support the organization. The entire project “took less than a week to make and came in at under €100” with mannequins sourced for free and clothing donated by JWT Amsterdam employees.

“We wanted to bring more people face-to-face with the different faces of homelessness- the mothers, the families, the children,” said JWT Amsterdam designer Robert Harrison. “It’s a real life problem in the city and, for us, it’s important to shed light on this issue. Our aim was to enable people to look at it in a different way, identify with the situation and feel compelled to take action by donating to BADT.”

Saatchi & Saatchi NZ Creates Burning Billboard for Sealord

Saatchi & Saatchi New Zealand created a flaming billboard to launch Sealord’s new line of hot smoked salmon.

The billboard was constructed using Manuka wood branches (the same type used in Sealord’s smoked salmon), which were then set on fire to replicate Sealord’s traditional smoking process. Sealord’s billboard reads, “Smoked: Just Like Our New Manuka Salmon,” although it’s pretty hard to read through all the smoke and fire. As you might recall, this is not the first burning billboard we’ve covered, but it is the first non-steakhouse-related burning billboard we can recall, so there’s that. The campaign also includes the above online video documenting the creation of the billboard, as well as pre-rolls and digital banners.

“When we learned about the wonderful artisan techniques involved in the creation of this delicious salmon, we were inspired to try and find a way to make this process the hero,” explained Saatchi & Saatchi New Zealand executive creative director Antonio Navas. Credits after the jump. continued…

TDA Gets Creepy for Firstbank

TDA Boulder has a new ad for Firstbank highlighting the bank’s free checking entitled “Bargain Dummy.” If ventriloquism freaks you out, stay clear of this one.

In the spot, Firstbank’s free checking is contrasted with a less promising free giveaway. A man at a yard sale holds up a ventriloquist dummy and asks, “How much is this?”

“Oh, that’s free” replies the seller. When the man inquires what’s wrong with it, the woman replies, unconvincingly, “Nothing.” As the man walks away with the dummy on his shoulder, the dummy’s eyes shift and look around. “Free isn’t always a good thing,” says a voiceover, accompanied by eerie music, “except when it comes to free checking at Firstbank.”

The creepy 30-second spot is aimed at the 16-39 audience and will run on all broadcast networks, with an emphasis on sports and primetime, as well as more than 20 cable channels, including AMC, ESPN, Comedy Centeral, and USA Network. “Bargain Dummy” will also live online on sites such as EPSN, Pandora, Hulu, Yahoo, and Tremor, where it is sure to creep out unsuspecting site visitors. The geo-targeted online buy includes Colorado, Pheonix, Arizona, and Palm Springs, Califronia. Stick around for credits after the jump. continued…

Grey SF, Norton ‘Boldly Go’ Over the Top

Grey San Francisco has created a new rebranding campaign for Norton that demonstrates a certain flair for the dramatic.

The anthem ad at the center of the campaign features lines like “The boldest gift has yet to be given,” “The boldest file has yet to be downloaded, without a second thought” and “The boldest life is out there.” At its conclusion, the spot advises, “Go boldly and you will find bliss.”

To us, this message translates as: “Go ahead and download that torrent; your antivirus software can handle it.”

Our protagonist–presumably so excited by Norton’s software that he can’t contain himself–proceeds to triumphantly rip off his own shirt. Maybe it was the confidence that came from knowing that his photo folders are safe…even if they’re not on the cloud.

Digital ads will appear on CBS News, CNN, Forbes and YouTube, with print ads planned for The Wall Street Journal and Forbes.

Standard Time Piles On Innuendeo for Too Faced

Los Angeles-based Standard Time has a new ad for cosmetic company Too Faced’s “Better Than Sex” mascara.

As you might expect, the spot, starring Jeannie Ma (of Style Network’s How Do I Look and NBC’s Today Show segment “Fashion Tips Today”) is ripe with sexual innuendo. As Ma opens up her mascara tube a low, sultry voice begins to seduce her. The mascara gives her the “longest, thickest, most luscious lashes of her life” with a satisfying experience Ma is not likely to forget, making “the case for eyelashes as the new erogenous zone.” Ma makes suggestive faces while applying the mascara, as the innuendo-filled narration piles on. If this all seems a little ridiculous, that’s kind of the point, as the approach fits with Too Faced co-founder Jerrod Blandino‘s “wild sense of humor and more-is-more style.” Stick around for credits after the jump. continued…

Innocean Kicks Off ‘Because Futbol’ for Hyundai

With the 2014 World Cup in Brazil now just over a week away, Innocean has kicked off Hyundai’s World Cup campaign, entitled “Because Futbol.”

In the campaign, two new in-game 30-second spots featuring the redesigned 2015 Hyundai Sonata will accompany digital, social, CRM, and retail executions. The spots will air on ESPN and Univision “as part of Hyundai’s exclusive whistle-to-whistle automotive advertising sponsorship of the World Cup series broadcasts on the networks.” The creative theme behind both “Avoidance” and “Boom” is fan passion, with Innocean likening fans loyalty to their team to Hyundai’s number one ranking in customer loyalty. In “Avoidance” a passionate fan leaves the office having recorded the day’s match. Seeking to keep himself in the dark on the game’s outcome, he goes through all sorts of trouble to avoid interacting with those who would spoil the surprise. “Boom” looks at a completely different aspect of fan passion. The campaign also includes a “#BecauseFutbol” site, built on the Tumblr platform, which “inspires and engages fans with unique content and tools developed by dozens of leading Tumblr artists and content creators.” Tumblr artist content will also be featured on the Times Square Billboard in New York during the days leading up to the World Cup.

“Soccer fans are more than just supporters of the game – they are die hard, loyal fanatics for their teams and countries,” said Steve Shannon, vice president, marketing, Hyundai Motor America. “As the industry leader in customer loyalty, Hyundai knows a thing or two about passion. This year’s World Cup campaign shows what being a ‘true’ fan really means; and how for 30 days people come together, lives change, emotions rise and unexpected moments happen.”

Stay tuned for credits and “Boom” after the jump. continued…

YouTube, 72andSunny Celebrate Equality for All Athletes

72andSunny has a new campaign for longtime gay rights supporter YouTube, entitled “ProudToPlay.” The star-studded campaign celebrating diversity in sports is set to run through the end of June, which is LGBT Pride Month, reports AdWeek.

In addition to gay athletes such as Jason Collins, Michael Sam and Robbie Rogers, the spot also features clips of Nelson Mandela, President Obama and Kobe Bryant talking about the unifying power of sports and the importance of gay rights. Set to Katy Perry‘s “Roar,” the “#ProudToPlay” video clocks in at two minutes, ending with a rainbow soccer ball YouTube logo tying the spot to the impending World Cup in Brazil (as does some of the footage used). “#ProudToPlay” is already getting a lot of attention. Since its launch yesterday, the video has racked up almost 3 million views (and an unfortunate but completely expected rash of homophobic comments).

“We applaud the courage and openness of athletes at all levels who have come out and admire their teammates, friends, families, and supporters who are all proving that it doesn’t matter who you are or who you love—what matters is that you put forward your best effort,” YouTube wrote in a blog post. “We stand with our community in the belief that youth everywhere should all have the same opportunities to grow up and pursue their dreams and passions, on or off the field.”

For the remainder of the month, YouTube will be sharing a collection of videos about the LGBT community and sports on the YouTube Spotlight Channel, and invites users to upload their own videos “talking about what being #ProudToPlay means to you.”

McCann NY Gets Loopy for Chex Mix

McCann New York has a new campaign for Chex Mix that attempts to bring attention to the lesser-known flavor variations of General Mill’s popular snack.

The integrated broadcast and social media campaign is rolling out now on national cable and YouTube, and will soon have Tumblr and Vine components. In the 30-second TV spot (above) roommates try to one up each other with DIY combo packs. The first roommate combines cheddar and honey nut flavors, while the second makes a belt with traditional, bold, and peanut butter. A third roommate goes the extra mile, however, and has them both beat with an over-the-top setup. The spot concludes with looping GIFs of the individual flavors. The GIFs will be hosted on a new Chex Tumblr site, and feature into a Vine-based game show called “Wheel of Variety,” which will “will offer hungry social media snackers who retweet Chex Mix tweets the opportunity to spin the wheel for the chance to be introduced to a Chex Mix flavor.” Stick around for credits and a closer look at the GIF loop. continued…
