BBH London (Over)Inflates Things for Virgin Media

To promote Virgin Media’s “comprehensive new bundle of technology services” BBH London teamed up with creative company th2ng (pronounced “thing two”) for a visceral visual demonstration of just how big the bundle package is.

They created a series of five online spots, “Conceived, devised, and delivered on an extremely tight deadline” that show the inflation of a series of everyday items to the breaking point. While the end results of continuously inflating the items — which include  a pair of dishwashing gloves, a standard suitcase, a hot water bottle, and a six-foot tall dinosaur — is predictable, it makes for suspenseful viewing since you don’t know when the explosive moment will occur. Directors Dan Lumb and Crinan Campbell say that, despite the time constraints, this was still “the project of their dreams.”

Following the launch of the first video in the series on June 16th, viewers had the opportunity to vote online for what they would like to see explode next. You can watch the original video above, and stick around for more explosions and credits after the jump. (more…)

Grey London Documents ’100 Years of Hair’ for Gillette

Grey London has a new spot for Gillette documenting the last one hundred years in male grooming.

The video, entitled “100 Years of Hair,” features the new “Gillette BODY, the brand’s first razor built for the terrain of the male body.” It takes the viewer on a journey through the myriad (and often regrettable) styles of decades past, such as the “Pepe Le Pew” mustache, handle bar. clean-shaved greaser, unkempt sixties, and the soul patch. At the spot’s conclusion the man  breaks out the Gillette BODY to shave his chest, displaying Gillette’s latest change to male grooming (which is sure to catch on with competitive swimmers everywhere). Stay with us after the credits for a behind-the-scenes video. (more…)

Ivan Cash, L’Oreal Draw ‘Inspiration’ from Streets of San Francisco

“If you could give one piece of advice to your childhood self, what would it be?” That’s one of the prevalent question being asked by artist/filmmaker Ivan Cash and his crew at Cash Studios, who were commissioned by cosmetics giant L’Oreal of all brands to make “a film about inspiration.” Rather than create an actual original film, though, Cash, the man who once told us that “reality is malleable,” to “stop making ads” and who was also a collaborator on the Couchella project from last year , turned his lens on the citizens of San Francisco to see what inspires them. As you’d expect, the four-minute film above features random strangers ranging from street musicians to former basketball coaches in SF sharing their thoughts on the aforementioned question or others like “What’s your greatest struggle?” and “what does inspiration mean to you?”

The New Age-y music combined with the people of San Francisco and the city scenery make for a very “Deep Thoughts by Jack Handey”-esque effort, but what the hell, we could all perhaps use a little life-affirming insight from time to time. Of course, this type of project where Cash turns his camera on the people is nothing new for the man, as this SF project follows up his film from last year in NYC, where he asked people what the “Last Photo” on their phone was. While different in concept and tone  of course, Cash’s two efforts on two coasts follow the same basic template and leave us wondering if his next short film will do the same and take somewhere in between. Guess we’ll have to wait and see. Credits after the jump.

Droga 5 Taps Stephen Merchant in ‘If We Won’ for Newcastle

Since it’s hard to market a British beer on July 4th, Stephen Merchant implores viewers to enjoy a Newcastle while celebrating “Independence Eve” on July 3rd and imagining how great it would have been if Great Britain had won the Revolutionary War in a new online spot from Droga 5.

Entitled “If We Won,” the spot sees Merchant trying on an “incredibly convincing American accent” before asking, “Do you really still have to celebrate your emancipation from us? That’s like your girlfriend breaking up with you and then celebrating with fireworks. Every year. For 300 years.” He then goes on to list all the ways America would be better if it were still a British colony, including “better comedy, news, TV programs,”  and way better curse words.

“In the late 1700s, colonial Americans risked life and limb to fight for their freedom,” Newcastle Brown Ale Brand Director Quinn Kilbury told Adweek. “Today, we’re running the very real risk of people totally not getting the joke here, and we think that’s pretty patriotic.”

Judging from a cursory glimpse at the YouTube comments section, that was a very real risk indeed. Stick around for limited credits after the jump.  (more…)

MUH-TAY-ZIK | HOF-FER Shares ‘Mom and Dad, I Have Something to Tell You’

Full-service creative agency MUH-TAY-ZIK | HOF-FER have offered up a short video entitled “Mom and Dad, I Have Something to Tell You” for  unique recommerce site PreviouslyOwnedByAGayMan.com.

In the 1:20 spot, a young man comes out to his parents as a lover of unique and stylish home furnishings, something his parents have a little trouble understanding. The video, directed by MUH-TAY-ZIK | HOF-FER co-founder and executive creative director John Matejczyk, attempts to play off the brand’s identity as a place for ”anyone with impeccable taste (not just gay men, despite it’s name) to buy and sell beautiful items in an environment that virtually eliminates the hassle of using other online channels.”

“This was a great project to work on,” said Matejczyk. “When we were casting for the video, almost all asked if it was for real. We were able to reply that it is very real indeed. The concept of the company is just the right blend of being provocative and respectful. The video we’ve created honors that concept and builds on it with a tasteful edge.”

Greenpeace Uses Humor in Attempt to ‘Stop the Madness’

Greenpeace tapped writer/director Olivier Agostini to create a comedic video for their efforts to stop Arctic drilling.

In the nearly four minute video, small-business owner (and whale music afficionado) Gary Stephenson explains to elderly office assistant Dina her latest mission: to attach a banner to an oil rig in the Russian Arctic. He explains the rigorous trials Dina will face on her mission, all of which actually happened to the team of dedicated Greenpeace activists known as the Arctic 30 — including being  ”blasted by water cannons…shot at, and eventually arrested and detained for 12 months in a Russian prison.” The online film contains actual footage from the real event toward its conclusion.

“This film is a comedic interpretation of a very serious situation that is currently happening in Russia,” said Agostini. “We wanted to draw attention to plight of the Arctic 30 without solely relying on documentary style footage. We hope this film will reach and raise awareness to a broader audience, not just green-minded individuals,  in an entertaining and engaging way.”

Mike’s Hard Lemonade Honors One Millionth Fan with Temporary Rebrand

As we mentioned back in April, Mike’s Hard Lemonade has decided to concentrate exclusively on digital advertising, also choosing to shop around for agencies on a project-to-project basis after parting ways with Grey last year. Chicago agency Tris3ct, which also led a recent 15th anniversary spot, worked with the brand to celebrate their one millionth Facebook fan.

To commemorate the milestone, Tris3ct and Mike’s Hard Lemonade developed a 24-hour rebrand to Paul’s in honor of the millionth fan. The brand marked the name change with updated Facebook and Twitter pages, and a revamped website. They also printed out a bunch of Paul’s swag, had a Paul’s cake made and surprised Paul at his place of work to celebrate. Of course, they also documented the whole thing, posting a 90-second video to YouTube and the brand’s Facebook page. You can catch the video above, which marks at least the third effort from the Chicago agency for the brand, starting with “Shandymatic” last summer.

Hello Flo Scores Viral Hit with ‘First Moon Party’

When a girl lies about getting her first period, her mother takes the ultimate revenge in a new spot for tampon subscription service (yes, that’s a thing) Hello Flo.

Company founder and CEO Naama Bloom once again teamed up with Jamie T. McCelland and Pete Marquis, the writers/directors of last year’s “Camp Gyno” spot for an even funnier follow-up.

Entitled “First Moon Party,” the 2:19 video begins with a girl who is frustrated to be the last of her friends to get her period. She decides to fake it in order to become a member of the “Cherry Slush Club.” When her mother questions her about a rubylicious nail polish-stained pad, she says “What do you think it is? I’m on my ladies days.” Angered by both the lie and her daughter’s tone, the mother decides to take the ultimate revenge, and goes way, way too far. Claiming that it’s “family tradition” she throws her daughter a “First Moon Party,” inviting friends, family, and co-workers to celebrate her menarche. With activities like “pin the pad on the period,” “bobbing for ovaries,” a uterus pinata, and a “vagician” the daughter is traumatized by the party. When the daughter inevitably reveals she was lying, the mother gives her a Hello Flo Period Starter kit, followed by a pretty hilarious punchline.

Like “Camp Gyno” the spot uses humor to frankly tackle a subject all too often treated as squeamish, while also perfectly tying it to their product/service. “First Moon Party” has already proven to be a huge success, racking up almost 1.5 million views since being posted two days ago. Given its humor and relatability, that shouldn’t come as a surprise. The Hello Flo team will have a hard time topping this one, but we look forward to seeing what they can come up with next. Stay tuned for credits and a “Camp Gyno” refresher after the jump. (more…)

W+K Portland Takes Terry Crews, Old Spice to the Next Level of Craziness

W+K Portland and Terry Crews are back, dialing up the mishigas in a new spot for Old Spice entitled “Drill to Brazil.”

In what may be the craziest Old Spice spot yet, Crews attempts to drill to Brazil by spiraling himself into the ground, because Terry Crews is magic. After a few failed attempts see him end up in Egypt, an office, and a snowcone, Crews finally gets to Brazil, where he meets what appears to be Brazilian Crews. In Brazil, Crews shares (screams) the message, “Old Spice thinks you’re amazing and is now available in Brazil!” before heading off to an unexpected location. If you’ve seen any of the previous Crews spots you already know the drill, just expect even more random craziness than usual from this one.

IMRE Gets Musical for Gravie

Baltimore-based agency IMRE has a new campaign for healthcare company Gravie that tells the brand’s story through music and humor.

The 2-minute online video (featured above),”Gravie Makes Everything Better” is crafted around a song celebrating the multiple uses of gravy before tying it to Gravie, the healthcare company, which helps save consumers from the hassles and headaches of finding a healthcare plan by through their selection process. The animated spot takes a lighthearted approach that is a welcome departure in the category, and the song is cute and almost catchy — certainly less annoying than what you’d expect for a song about a healthcare company — even if it wears out its welcome by the 2-minute mark. RKCR Celebrates ‘Can and Will’ Spirit for Land Rover UK

RKCR has launched a new campaign entitled “Can and Will,” which celebrates the “go anywhere” attitude of the Land Rover brand.

The campaign is centered around a 60-second television spot featuring individuals who embody the “Can and Will” spirit, including Mike Goody, who lost a leg in Afghanistan and aims to represent the UK in the Invictus Games this September (which Land Rover will be sponsoring), and 68-year-old competitive surfer Gwyn Haslock. “Don’t tell me I can’t,” these individuals state, “because I can and I will.” The spot recently began broadcasting on terrestrial, cable and satellite channels, in addition to ITV advert breaks during World Cup games. The stories behind the individuals in “Can and Will” can be found on the campaign website, www.canandwill.co.uk. Additionally, a “series of mini-documentary films have been commissioned in partnership with Channel 4, with Paralympic hero Ellie Simmons and actor Richard E. Grant talking about their ‘Can and Will’ stories,” which will be broadcast during breaks in Channel 4 programs and through C4’s digital platforms. The campaign will run throughout the summer.

“Our new ‘Can and Will’ brand campaign is a celebration of the spirit of determination,” said Jaguar Land Rover UK Marketing Director Laura Schwab. “It’s about embarking on new challenges, but also never quitting when the going gets tough. It’s an attitude which has seen Land Rover vehicles conquer some of the world’s most inhospitable locations.” We’ve got credits after the jump. continued…

Saatchi Thailand, FIFA Invite You to ‘Be the One’

Saatchi & Saatchi Thailand is capitalizing on the World Cup action by joining forces with its new client, Asian online gaming brand Garena, to hype the free EA Sports multiplayer game, FIFA Online 3. Following days of teasing last week in the form of media hijacking of Southeast Asian soccer news sites, where actual football stars mentioned in news articles were replaced with that of Thai game players, Saatchi Thailand and Garena have officially launched the campaign, “I Am the One,” via the :60 spot above.

Dubbed “Messi’s Arrival,” the clip debuted the day before the Argentinean superstar and his countrymen defeated Bosnia and Herzegovina and imagines what he experienced upon landing in Brazil through the eyes of someone who perhaps resembles your ideal gamer. Of course, Messi himself never actually appears in the spot (he’s in a million other commercials as you may have noticed, though), but it basically keeps in the line with the “I Am the One” campaign theme. Along with the spot, Saatchi Thailand is also developing content for its native audience based on results from its Live Creativity real-time social and content hub, which will follow World Cup news and social chatter as the event progresses. The agency’s ECD, Nuntawat Chaipornkaew, explains, “When Brazil scored an own goal, our content team produced an ‘interview’ with a Thai player talking about how he just wanted to score the first goal. When Spanish star Alonso lost tooth, so did our stars and even the audience. When Suerez hurt his knee, so did we.”

With the film and social components covered, the parties involved will also be launching the full website for FIFA Online 3 come tomorrow. There, an interactive version of the film will be available and allow viewers to insert their own faces into it to “be the one” and also join the world’s largest football team photo. One can only imagine how that will turn out. Credits after the jump.

The Richards Group Rolls Out ‘Fact or Fake’ Series for Orkin

The Richards Group has unveiled a new “Fact or Fake” series of online videos for Orkin Pest Control, the latest in their “Bug Wisdom” campaign.

“Fact or Fake” is a series (so far two) of videos that attempt to prove or disprove commonly held views on bugs, MythBusters style. In the video, above for example, the crew attempts to answer the question, “Are Daddy Longlegs Poisonous?” Much like MythBusters, The Richards Group tries to mix scientific inquiry with goofy humor. If the results aren’t exactly funny, they are at least still entertaining — especially when you consider the typical approach for advertising pest control. Another spot in the series tackles the question of whether termites eat faster when rock music is played.

The Richards Group also recently released a series of “Top 6” listicle videos, counting down the best bugs to eat and the most venomous insects. With both coming on the heels of the initial “Bug Wisdom” series, it’s clear The Richards Group has been quite busy for Orkin. Grey Unveils ‘Will It Or Won’t It’ for Nexcare

Grey has a new digital campaign for 3M Company brand Nexcare introducing unexpected product tester Nexcare Nana.

“Will It Or Won’t It” is a series of three 30-second videos that follow the fearless Nexcare Nana as she conducts extreme product tests displaying Nexcare’s ability to stay on and keep out dirt, water, and germs. In “Nana vs. Dirt,” the highlight of the series (featured above), a dump truck dumps a pile of dirt on Nana, who emerges to reveal that her Nexcare bandage is not only still on but also free of dirt. In the other spots, Nexcare Nana takes on a water hose and a dumpster. Each ends with a “No grandmas were hurt in the making of this video” disclaimer. The campaign also includes a “Tough as Nana” consumer engagement program celebrating the Nexcare Nana persona and allowing consumers to “nominate the special people in their lives that are as daring, tough and resilient as Nexcare Nana” for a chance to win “one of three trips inspired by Nexcare Nana’s pursuit of adventure including swimming with sharks, skydiving or a racecar driving experience.” Stick around for “Nana vs. Water” and credits following the jump. continued…

180 Amsterdam Champions Eco-Activism for REPLAY

180 Amsterdam has a bold new campaign unveiling REPLAY’s eco-friendly Laserblast L.I.F.E. collection, which celebrates real-life activists as models.

REPLAY’s Laserblast L.I.F.E.  capsule collection utilizes “innovative and eco-friendly Laserblast technology, which dramatically reduces water consumption, and the use of coloured mineral pigments of natural origin,” resulting in “one of the most eco-friendly, natural denim ranges.” The brand called on 180 Amsterdam to make eco-friendly jeans seem youthful and rebellious, casting “models with a world-leading ethical stance – the real-life activists transforming the way we live today.” It marks 180 Amsterdam’s first campaign for the brand.

180 Amsterdam’s two minute digital spot for the campaign (featured above), shows environmental activists (clad in jeans, of course) clashing with heavily-armed security forces. Opening with shots of protesters in the woods, with audio clips of climate change deniers in the background, the group are soon met by the security forces they clash with. The provocative spot includes violence against protesters, and even some unexpected partial nudity before ending on a positive note with a surprise twist. 180 Amsterdam certainly didn’t hold back on this one, although some may make the argument that they’re trying a little too hard to seem edgy.

“We have very ambitious targets for the business. We are thrilled to partner with 180 Amsterdam to bring our vision to life and expectations on Laserblast L.I.F.E. project. Their team, their enthusiasm and their talent make us excited about the result of this journey,” said Art Zuyderwijk, MD REPLAY Benelux.

TBWAParis Raises Awareness for Amnesty International France

TBWAParis, Amnesty International France’s advertising agency for 10 years, has a new ad for the organization, which is celebrating its 35th anniversary.
The 1:55 film, entitled “Pens,” uses a clever visual device to tell the story of an unnamed protestor. The protestor is arrested, detained and abused, but released following thousands of petitions for his release. Set to a soundtrack performed by Paolo Nutini, with a short, stirring excerpt from Charlie Chaplin’s The Dictator, the spot champions Amnesty’s process of mobilization via the signatures of its supporters. “Pens” is a clear expression of Amnesty Frances’s ““your signature is more powerful than you think” slogan and a powerful encapsulation of what the organization stands for. DDB Budapest Launches Tweet-Based Friday the 13th Experiment

Seeing as it’s Friday, June 13 and all, DDB’s Hungarian branch has decided to get into the spirit of the most superstitious date of the year via Twitter. The agency has launched a simple, one-day project that aims to find out how your Friday the 13th is going simply by using the hashtag #lucky or #unlucky in your tweets. The main goal of the 24-hour effort is to find out if Friday the 13th is really deserving of all the negativity that’s been attached to it through the ages, and from the looks of it on the live “Friday the 13th: The Experiment” site, today is proving to be more auspicious than unlucky. Well, there’s still over 14 hours to go so we’ll see what happens when the end results are posted tomorrow. While our day’s been neither lucky nor unlucky thus far, we’re just saddened by the lack of a Jason Voorhees appearance in this project (though the Tupac one is, um, interesting).

AKQA SF Shares ‘The Samba of the World’ for Visa

AKQA San Francisco created a digital campaign for Visa representing each of the 32 nations who qualified for the 2014 World Cup, with each country given its own representational samba.

For the campaign, AKQA San Francisco and Visa invited musicians from each of the 32 qualified countries to reimagine the Brazilian favorite “Maria Caipirinha” (Samba da Bahia). They then called on filmmakers from each of the countries to “show how their nation celebrates the FIFA World Cup.” This resulted in one of the more unique World Cup campaigns, as we’ve seen a lot of ads celebrating Brazil, but not so many celebrating the other nations at the World Cup. Viewers get a look at each country’s culture, “including regional dance moves, food fans enjoy on match days, the type of gear they wear, even their country’s football rituals and history.” Viewers can jump between different countries’ videos via each country’s flag on the  Visa World Cup site or select the video they want from the YouTube playlist for “The Samba of the World.” We’ve included host country Brazil’s entry above, with Mexico and Cameroon, along with credits, after the jump. continued…

Saatchi & Saatchi London, Toyota Want You to ‘Go Fun Yourself’

Saatchi & Saatchi teamed up with Internet prankster Rahat to launch a new multichannel campaign promoting the Toyota Aygo.

Part of the “Go Fun Yourself” campaign, the debut spot features Rahat slipping into a costume that perfectly matches the seats of the Toyota Aygo, making the car appear to be driving itself. He then drives around Europe with a hidden camera documenting people’s reactions. That’s right, another hidden camera prank video. If you’re tired of these already, you might want to head elsewhere, because the 90-second “Who’s Driving” — set to the Fratelli’s track, “Chelsea Dagger,” and directed by Smuggler’s Jamie Rafn — doesn’t do a lot to distinguish itself from the pack.

The spot will launch the “Go Fun Yourself” Pan-European integrated campaign on TV, in cinemas, and online — supported by social and print components — today, in markets including the UK, France, Italy, Germany and Denmark. “Go Fun Yourself” attempts to “emphasize Aygo’s image as the playful, dynamic car of choice suited to those that don’t take themselves seriously.” Aimed at a younger audience, the campaign will comprise a series of prankster-style videos and social activity which will roll out across the year.

“Aygo is not just another car, so for the launch we wanted to do things differently,” said Stephane Rydlewski, brand & communication manager, Toyota Europe. “With ‘Go Fun Yourself’, we found the perfect way to express the true spirit of the car – fun, provocative & irreverent, without taking ourselves too seriously. We all have this fun inside, we just need to let it go. This is the magic of the new AYGO campaign.” Stick around for credits after the jump. continued…

Story UK Ltd Celebrates Peat Football for Ardbeg Distillery

Story Uk Ltd teamed up with production company th1ng to create a unique World Cup spot for Ardbeg Distillery’s new Ardbeg Auriverdes whiskey.

Directed by David Boni, in collaboration with animation director Shay Hamias, the spot celebrates both Islay, Scotland’s distinctive brand of “peat football” and Ardberg Distllery. Shot in black and white, the 75-second spot opens on an old photo of an Islay football team. One of the players steps out of the photograph, punts an old leather ball out of the frame, and starts a chain reaction that runs through the remainder of the ad. There’s been a barrage of soccer related advertising leading up to the World Cup, but this one stands out with a unique setting and approach.
