The Handmaid’s Tale: A Hulu Original

I am excited to see Elizabeth Moss of Mad Men star in The Handmaid’s Tale, a new production which premieres on Hulu on April 26. The brilliant 1985 novel by Canadian writer Margaret Atwood could not be more timely. The story is set in a dystopia dominated by right-wing religious tyranny and environmental devastation where […]

Content Studios Increasingly Borne of the Agency’s Rib

Content marketing has been around since John Deere started a magazine for farmers in the late 19th century. For the past 10 to 12 years, the discipline has come back with a furry, as digital reawakened the opportunity in long-form brand and multi-platform storytelling. The changes have been disruptive, and many clients and agencies continue […]

Consciousness Comes To Carvertising

European luxury wagons are not just personal transporters to efficiently and safely get you to and from work—they’re $45,000 sleds that you can ride to freedom. Volvo’s agency, Forsman & Bodenfors, went deep into the archive for this Alan Watts speech: There is no use planning for a future which when you get to it […]

Holy Tongue Cleaners, Orabrush Team Spins Off

Brands need YouTube content and advertising, but where do they turn to procure this modern form of communications currency? Ad agencies are changing, but few have crossed the bridge from making TV for a passive audience to making video for an active, empowered audience. One way to find a video provider is to discover who […]

New Feature Film from Red Bull Media House (One of 600 Pieces of Content)

Content is not king. Red Bull’s content is king. Werner Brell, managing director of Red Bull Media House, made a rare public appearance at the Content All Stars summit in New York recently. Journalist and MBA, Dorian Benkoil, was there to speak with him for Mediashift. I joked to Brell that a toilet paper company […]

Filmed in New York City and directed by Keith Schofield, “Kittens” is the third TV spot for Diet Coke’s “Get A Taste” campaign. The […]

When Content Scores Points For Brands, It Doesn’t Need Much Defense

People like my friend Bob Hoffman, a.k.a. The Ad Contrarian, at times grow fatigued by all the hubbub around social media and content marketing. Bob says, “Content is a meaningless term — a media contrivance — invented by bullshit artists to add gravitas and mystery to mundane marketing activities.” Yes, Hoffman is a humorist at […]

Salute Garage Rock With A Captain & Coke

Given that many lifestyle brands are also publishers today, brands have an opportunity to bring beauty and intelligence into the world, not just more “Look at Me!” adverts. For instance, King Tuff’s new single, “Danger in the Dark,” was created for the Captain Morgan brand’s new global advertising campaign, The Tavern Series, which premiered in […]

“Keep your day job, until your night job pays.” -Hunter/Garcia

If there is one lesson I might share with you from nearly a decade as an ad blogger, it is this: Do not start with a blog and then go looking for a business to support it. Business first, then blog.

The reality is I made this correction several years ago, and now I put more time and energy into Bonehook.com. Bonehook is my marketing services company—it’s the way I make my way in the world. AdPulp is a side-project.

Understand, I am a big believer in side-projects. There are dozens of reasons to pursue a side-project, and just as many benefits. Yet, by definition, a side-project is not one’s main gig.

That people sometimes perceive AdPulp to be my day job throws me, but when I step back and look at it I do see the compliment there and I appreciate it.

Given that I build brands for a living, it was important for me to build one here. This fact also ladders perfectly with my specialization in content and social media marketing. Many lifestyle brands need their own AdPulp—no, not an advertising blog—a deep daily dive into an important topic.

If you work for a brand and you need help with content strategy, plus the implementation of a workable, affordable execution plan, give me a ring. I’m at 503-970-3862. I’ve done it here for nearly a decade, and on behalf of clients, for even longer.

Producing Mass Quantities of Content Might Be The New Normal

I’ve been working on lots of little assignments for one of my clients these days. Greeting cards, web videos, blog posts, that sort of thin. Are all these bits of content adding up to a successful career, or a successful brand? Well, I’m not sure. But it appears to be the future of advertising.

we might have to face the reality that most of us in marketing are playing small ball. That the majority of our work isn’t going to be seen, appreciated, or acted upon by even our client’s most loyal customers. We’re sending content and messages down increasingly narrow rabbit holes. And despite the explosion in new awards categories for some of these tactics, much of this work won’t get creative people lauded, doesn’t look great in their portfolios, and certainly doesn’t get people promoted into new or better-paying positions.

It’s the subject of my new column on Talent Zoo.

Digitas LBi Applies BuzzFeed’s Content Formula To Client Problems

Agencies active in the content game are making progress. They’ve moved away from the “every company is a media company” fallacy to a better place.

One thing we know for sure, every company is NOT a media company, especially not every advertising agency nor the marketers they support. Yet, the need for compelling brand-building media remains as strong as ever.

What is a global leader in digital marketing to do? If you’re Digitas LBi, you partner with with BuzzFeed and Epic Digital to develop new digital branded content. Why reinvent the wheel when you can simply buy new wheels and have them installed on your vehicle?

quality

Epic Digital is an arm of Epic Magazine, which was co-founded by Josh Bearman and Joshua Davis (one of the most interesting people working online today).

According to Adweek, part of the deal includes marketing-side staffers from BuzzFeed will “grab a desk” in digital agency’s New York office. Teams from both companies will work together on strategies for brands.

Adam Shlachter, head of media activation North America Digitas LBi, said, “Buzzfeed has a formula for connecting with people, the things they want to read, the things they want to share, the things they want to talk about. We think we can combine that formally with how we think about the media to help brands tell really powerful stories.”

A formula to help tell really powerful stories? If the formula is to staff your team with outstanding writers, I can see where this is a winning idea. Other formulas like when to post, and how often are distractions.

Brands can’t tell their own stories. They need highly skilled modern-day storytellers to perform the hard work. An interesting twist here is that Digitas LBi has many solid copywriters on staff, but copywriters are trained to sell with short, smart language. Weaving long-form narratives (sponsored by a brand) is a different skill—one most often found in journalists.
