Arnold Taps Grace Helbig for New St. Ives Campaign

Arnold Worldwide tapped actress/comedian Grace Helbig, who recently starred in the film Camp Takota, for a 1:47 ad.

The long form ad sees Helbig extolling the virtues of St. Ives’ new “Fresh Hydration Lotion Spray” — which was just released on February 25th — with her brand of manic humor. St. Ives’ new spot plays off the inherent ridiculousness of lotion ads, amping things up to 11 and letting Gerbig riff of that and generally run around like a lunatic. After using the spray, Helbig is whisked away to the magic “land of St. Ives,” a sort of tropical paradise. She tracks down a waterfall made out of lotion, at which time the apparent psychedelic effects of the spray wear off and she’s transported back to her house.

Whether or not you like the new St. Ives spot, which Helbig describes as “wonderfully stupid,” will depend in large part on how you feel about Helbig’s brand of humor. Her fans, who must make up a sizable portion of the video’s 100,000-plus views, will undoubtedly find the spot endearing (and just may purchase the product on her recommendation), while those who find Helbig’s personality grating won’t find anything to enjoy here. As the YouTube views indicate, the spot is certainly getting some eyes on it. Helbig has also garnered attention for the new product by mentioning it on her YouTube series, and even posting a behind-the-scenes video on her channel that has garnered more views than the ad itself. Stick around for that behind-the-scenes video, along with credits, after the jump. continued…

W+K Launches New Facebook Campaign, On Couch Skis

Well, W+K has certainly moved on from the “Everything is like Facebook” approach they used in 2012 to launch their relationship with the social media giant. The agency’s newest campaign demonstrates how Facebook can facilitate events like a couch ski race.

The “Couch Skis” spot (featured above) shows a group of youngsters getting the word out about their winter “couch race” via Facebook. A large group of friends cheer as the two couches speed down the snowy hill, followed by the tagline, “Whatever the event you always have a team.” The new approach makes a lot more sense than the one W+K employed early on, and they certainly make couch racing look like fun.

Another spot in W+K’s new campaign shows how Facebook can help you find the right tango instructor, working backwards chronologically from a successful lesson to a friend’s suggestion of the instructor on Facebook. A third spot shows a series of wedding photo and poses the question, “Why have one photographer when you can have a hundred?”

The new ads have been shared by Facebook on YouTube, and, of course, on Facebook — where, Mashable reports the social network has disseminated the videos in users’ News Feeds using Promoted Posts. There are currently no plans to air the new spots on TV according to the site. Stick around for “Tango” and “Photographer” after the jump. continued…

Carhartt Stokes Michigan State Pride with ‘Hands in the Mitten’

Detroit-based, family-owned and operated apparel company Carhartt collaborated with former agency creatives to create an in-house online video examining what makes Michigan unique.

Entitled “Hands in the Mitten” the 4:27 video asks “What Makes Michigan?” and whether Michigan came pure or was built that way, investigating Michigan landmarks and interviewing natives before arriving at the answer. The video’s tone and message are reminiscent of McCann’s award-winning “Pure Michigan” campaign, but stretched out over several minutes. It does a lot to hammer home Carhartt’s status as a local company, in a state that takes a lot of pride in itself and keeping business within the state. “Hands in the Mitten” is well done, offering a look at many different parts of the state, even if its run time could have been cut a little bit. Soubriet Byrne & Associates Dispels ‘Swiss Myths’ for Tourism Board

Soubriet Byrne & Associates worked with the Swiss Tourism Board to create a series of lighthearted videos called “Swiss Myths,” featuring host and “travel investigator” Michael Delaney.

In the series, Delaney goes about dispelling myths from “The Swiss only eat fondue” to “The Swiss don’t have fun” to the notion that there’s always snow in Switzerland and that you have to speak the language. Throughout the series employs a kind of lighthearted, and somewhat cheesy, humor that wouldn’t be out of place on a Travel Channel series from back before the Travel Channel was all about food.

The highlight of the series is definitely “Fondue or Fondon’t?” (the title of which should give you an idea of what to expect). In the video, Delaney goes to an upscale Swiss restaurant and is astonished to find that they don’t serve fondue. Disappointed, Delaney still finds use for his long fork. The rest of the videos follow the same formula: humorously debunking commonly held misconceptions or generalizations about Switzerland while extolling the country’s appealing tourist aspects. A couple of these, namely “Nice Pass!” and “Speakin’ Swiss,” seem a little out of touch, as I’m not sure many people think it’s hard to get around the country or don’t know that its citizens largely speak English. The video series is the Swiss Tourism site, where visitors can enter to win a “Grand Prize of an eight-day all expense paid trip, from Swiss Int. Air Lines and Globus Journeys, throughout the magnificent country,” as well as navigate through photos and funny quizes. Stick around for “#%&@% Palm Tree!” and credits after the jump. continued…

Zulu Alpha Kilo Mangles History to Promote Interac e-Transfer

Zula Alpha Kilo created a new campaign for Interac, promoting their e-Transfer service with a comical website containing historical parodies of various time periods.

The website has three videos featuring Dr. Trapasso, “Doctor of Money Transferology, a man who has dedicated his life to studying money.” Trapasso takes the viewer on a tour of three historical time periods where his mangled historical accounts demonstrate the “perils of archaic money exchange” in attempts at humor that mostly fall flat. One of these, featured above, features Leonardo da Vinci’s failed attempts at getting reimbursed for a pizza he fronted for Michelangelo. The other two videos are in much the same goofy vein, with accounts of the first Olympic games and the westward expansion of Canada.

“People resist change,” exaplains Shari Walczak, Executive Planning Director at Zulu Alpha Kilo. “We know that consumers are not in love with cheques as a form of payment. However, we are creatures of habit and need to be reminded that there’s a better way to exchange money other than cheques or cash,” said Shari, completely ignoring the existence of debit transactions.

Zulu Alpha Kilo’s campaign also includes “video pre-rolls, standard and rich media banner ads, along with paid and organic social media support to tease audiences with the absurdity of these stories” and will run until the spring. The creative is supported with a national digital media campaign handled by Media Experts, as well as a French adaptation for the Quebec marketplace developed by TANK. Draftfcb Chicago Lets Pets Speak for The Shelter Pet Project

We thought we’d round out Monday on a cute note.

Draftfcb Chicago created a new pro-bono campaign for The Shelter Pet Project that lets the animals speak for themselves. Working in partnership with The Ad Council, The Humane Society of the United States, and Maddie’s Fund, Draftfcb’s integrated campaign features TV, outdoor and web PSAs promoting pet adoption. The campaign showcases the adorable and amazing personalities of real dogs and cats adopted from shelters, who practically reach through the screen and invite viewers to play with them. Draftfcb plans to take things a step further later this week with the launch of a new online experience on The Shelter Pet Project’s website allowing visitors “to virtually meet and play with the pets from the PSAs.” You can view the PSA for the friendly feline Stetson above, while dog lovers can meet the energetic Arnie below. Still not enough aww to round out your Monday? Stick around for another feline/canine pair and credits after the jump.

Moscow Havas Digital Crew Creates URL Lengthener to Promote Russian Bookstore

A group of Russian Havas Digital creatives have created an intriguing new digital campaign for Russian bookstore, Respublica.

The self-branded “humble project” is a site called “URLiterature,” which promotes reading with a URL lengthener. Yes, you read that correctly, a URL lengthener. Created to promote reading and combat the assault on language resulting from acronyms and social media-promoting short messages, URLiterature uses a URL lengthener to add text from a selected book to the link you want to send. Simply paste “your boring URL,” choose your book and share, pleasing literature professors everywhere. New Lowe Campbell Ewald Campaign Marks Beginning of the End for ‘Got Milk?’

Lowe Campbell Ewald marks the end of an era today, with their campaign for Milk Processor Education Program (MilkPEP) offering up a new tagline that shifts away from the iconic “Got Milk?” line that seems like it’s been around forever.

Although the “Got Milk?” tagline will still be used in some markets, such as California (where the processors are reportedly still with Goodby), the campaign is largely fazing out the popular tagline in favor of “Milk Life” — which may or may not be inspired by “Thug Life.” Lowe Campbell Ewald’s multi-million dollar integrated campaign focuses on milk’s health benefits (fitting the new tagline), most notably as a strong source of protein.

“Got Milk has very high awareness,” Sal Taibi, president at Lowe Cambell Ewald, New York told AdAge, “But we have a new strategy. We have a new message and we just felt we needed a new approach.”

At the heart of the “Milk Life” campaign is the new anthem spot featured above, which “spotlights everyday moments of accomplishment, achievement and enjoyment, showing milk with the latest in graphic and animation technology to bring to life how families who include milk’s protein at breakfast make the most of their day.” The obviously high-budget visuals are impressive enough, and the spot is fairly well put-together, but I’ve got to say I really miss the milk mustaches. In addition to the 30 second anthem spot, the campaign also includes “print, TV and digital advertising, consumer and retail promotions, public relations and social media” — presumably also devoid of milk mustaches. The “Milk Life” campaign also marks the first work to come out of Lowe Campbell Ewald’s recently opened New York office. Stick around for credits after the jump, and let us know what you think of the new direction in the comments section. continued…

Radley Carves Out Hilton Olympic Campaign

With the 2014 Sochi Olympics slowly making their way toward their conclusion, we thought we’d share an Olympic campaign you might not have seen yet. Radley launched “Be A Weekender” for Hilton with four mini-documentaries honoring American Olympic athletes for Hilton’s Honors program.

The four videos were designed to “provide an energizing look at the forever-on-the-move lifestyles of Olympic hopefuls,” exemplified by “Weekend By Ashley,” the 2:16 video starring U.S. skater Ashley Wagner featured above. In the video, Wagner talks about her crazy, always on the move lifestyle in which she sometimes forgets what country’s hotel room she is in, growing up at the ice rink, and all the trips to warm places she’d like to take. Other athletes featured in the series include speed skater Patrick Meek, hockey player Meghan Agosto-Marciano and Paralympic ski racer Alana Nichols.

Creating these documentaries was no easy feat, as finding the extra time to film with athletes whose days typically begin with training at 3 A.M. is a big challenge. As Radley CCO/Director Kurt Spenser explains, “Fitting into the lives of Olympic hopefuls in the middle of an Olympic year is not an easy task. Detailed planning with the Hilton team allowed us to stay on schedule for the athletes and to be spontaneous when opportunities presented themselves. We did not want to interrupt their training or their travel, so we had to tailor our production as much as we could while still staying on budget and on time. It was a great team effort and we are all very proud of the results.”

Check out “Weekend By Ashley” above, and stick around for Alana Nichols‘ video, along with credits, after the jump. And for the full experience, head over to the campaign website. continued…

Grey Stages Ewing Energies Takeover for TNT’s ‘Dallas’

ewinggas

If you own a car and live in Manhattan, you’ll have reason to celebrate this Monday, especially if you’re a fan of TNT’s Dallas reboot.

To celebrate the season 3 launch of Dallas, Grey New York is organizing a gas station takeover for TNT, with the mystery location being transformed to a Ewing Energies station with prices that will drastically undercut the competition (although 1978 prices may be a bit too much to hope for). The show’s star, Josh Henderson, will be on hand to cut the ribbon and announce the price.

Grey has launched the campaign with a video message from Henderson on the Dallas Facebook page. A multimedia campaign will lead up to the event on Monday, including “radio promotions, billboards, wrapped oil tankers,” more video messages from Henderson, and “a New York Times ad announcing the price cut.” The actual location of the Ewing Energies gas station will be kept secret until Monday, so a keep eye on this campaign, especially if you’re keen on getting some cheap gas after the weekend. This should be a fun way to launch the new season, and we’re guessing the slashed cost of gas at the station will draw quite the crowd and garner a lot of attention for the show.

“Producing a campaign for TNT that effectively showcases how the world’s most powerful fictional family, the Ewings, can blur the lines and wield enough power to change something in the real world is the type of work that Grey lives and breathes for,” says agency executive creative director, Lisa Topol. “Fans will just have to wait and see how generous the Ewings will be with the final price of gas.”

One thing is for sure, though, this guy is excited:

DHL Trolls Competitors with Clever Stunt (Update)

We’re not sure who is behind this one, but DHL pulled a clever stunt and, in lieu of a traditional advertising campaign, had their competitors advertise for them (if the above video is to be believed).

To accomplish this they taped the packages with thermoactive foil and cooled them to below the freezing point. So competing companies like UPS and TNT picked up what appeared to be a black package, but when they went to deliver it (to carefully selected, not so easy to find locations) the box had transformed to reveal the message, “DHL Is Faster.” So employees of competing companies were walking around the city, advertising DHL’s services for free. Assuming this isn’t a hoax, it has to be one of the more clever marketing stunts in recent memory. Video of the stunt, appropriately titled “Trojan Mailing,” has been gaining a good deal of attention on YouTube. It’s already gained over 500,000 views since being added on Wednesday. I think it’s fair to call DHL’s tactic a resounding success.

Update: “This was not something that was initiated by DHL,” a rep for the company told Consumerist in an e-mail. “The video was created by an external agency for their own internal competition. We were aware in advance of the intention to use it for this purpose. We were not aware of any plans to share it externally.” No word yet on which agency was involved.

Shaq, Shawn Kemp Return in Ep. 2 of Decon’s ‘Retro Shop’ Series for Reebok

New York-based production company Decon has launched the next episode in its funny new web series promoting Reebok Classic

To refresh memory, Reebok commissioned Decon to run with a strategic content approach to promote its new retro Classic product line. So, Decon came up with the mini web series, “The Retro Shop,” and the results are pretty hilarious. The first item in the Reebok Classic launch is the Shaq Attaq Retro sneaker, which made its debut on the 14th, so naturally everyone’s favorite Kazaam star is featured heavily in the first two episodes. “The Retro Shop” is set, appropriately enough, at an old school barber shop, where patrons discuss argue about some of the NBA’s greatest players. It’s a formula that works really well, especially since Decon keeps things on the shorter side, and makes for an eminently watchable experience. So grab some popcorn and in case you need a rewind, check out episode 1 starring Shaq and his horrible wig, along with credits, after the jump. continued…

Hungry Boys Determines ‘Your Future Startup’

Your Startup

Russian creative agency Hungry Boys has launched a new animated digital campaign to promote the release of the upcoming film “Startup,” about “the burgeoning startup scene in Russia from the early 90s until now,” slated for an April 3rd release. (Here’s a link to the trailer, in case you speak Russian.)

The site allows users to answer a series of questions (after taking all your Facebook info) designed “ to determine whether or not people have what it takes to become an entrepreneur and what sort of startup they might consider becoming involved in.” But don’t take the questions, or the results, too seriously. It’s really just a fun way to promote the movie. Many of the questions have more to do with pop culture preferences than anything pertaining to business, and the startup suggestions are pretty goofy and ridiculous. Here are my results:

Creatives Concoct Different Kind of Recommendation Site

Stockholm-based freelance creative Robbin Ingvarsson and Hyper Island interactive art director student Kali Adams have created a different kind of recommendation site, with help from developer Alexander Wallin, called “Not Recommended For You.”

Tired of computerized “personalized recommendations” based on things like “our prior browsing history, likes and dislikes, keeping us inside the same algorithm bubbles,” Not Recommended For You attempts to re-humanize the world of online recommendations. Visitors to the site are met with random recommendations (that are decidedly “not for you”) from random people from all over the world. The recommendations range from serious life advice to places to visit, to film recommendations, to how to start a night of drinking…and . It’s an intriguing idea, and quite the departure from the usual online recommendation experience. Give it a shot for yourself, there’s no telling what kind of recommendations you’ll get (which is what makes it fun).

W+K Launches the Only Interactive Site Where Hair Plays Huey Lewis Songs

W+K Portland has unveiled “The Power of Hair” for Old Spice, the “newest, never-been-done-before interactive digital experience.”

The new site is an extension of W+K’s “For Hair That Gets Results” campaign promoting Old Spice’s new haircare and styling products, featuring the same anthropomorphic hair, and comes on the heels of the “Boardwalk” and “Meeting” spots Old Spice debuted late last month. Visitors to “The Power of Hair are greeted by a testimonial video with a young man extolling the virtues of Old Spice’s hair products. Predictably, this includes attention from the ladies and respect around the office. Less predictably, this includes Huey Lewis songs. “When you’ve got great hair like this, you’d be surprised by how many Huey Lewis songs it can play on the piano,” the now bald man says.

Visitors to the site are then asked to pick a Huey Lewis song, and the hair (which by now has slithered off of the guy’s head) will play them on piano, occasionally adding in some percussion. You can pick from among 29 of Lewis’ greatest hits, including “The Power of Love,” “I Want a New Drug,” “The Heart of Rock n’ Roll,” “Bad is Bad” and “Doing It All for My Baby.” It’s a pretty absurd idea (and yeah, we’re pretty sure no one has done this before), but then this is the kind of silliness we’ve come to expect from W+K’s work for Old Spice and a fitting extension of the “For Hair That Gets Results” campaign, complete with a perfect title. Give “The Power of Hair” a try above or at the site, and stick around for credits after the jump. continued…

Draftfcb NY Soundtracks Jamaican Bobsled Team

Yesterday we brought news of Draftfcb New York’s case study for the Jamaica Tourist Board. Well, that agency is feelin’ the rhythm and has just released a song for the Jamaican bobsled team, called, appropriately enough, “The Bobsled Song.”

The song was written by Sidney Mills and Jon Notar, “according to the shape and length of the actual race track” at Sochi, in order to act as a soundtrack to Jamaica’s run. What’s more, the song’s lyrics sync up perfectly with the lefts, rights, and straightaways of the course. This is best illustrated in the fun, mostly 8-bit video game style music video above. (Anyone else wish this game was real?) Everybody loves Jamaica’s bobsled team, thanks to Cool Runnings, and now there’s one more reason to watch Jamaica compete at Sochi. This Sunday, head on over to bobsledsong.com, tune in for the first heat at 11:15 AM, and the second heat at 12:45 PM, and play “The Bobsled Song” when Jamaica starts their run. Or follow @VisitJamaicaNow on Twitter for updates on when team Jamaica runs. It’s bobsled time. Stick around for credits after the jump. continued…

W+K Portland Unveils ‘Join Together’ Follow-Up Called, Yes, ‘Separate Together’

Last month, W+K Portland launched the “Be Moved” brand campaign for Sony with the broadcast spot “Join Together.” Yesterday, W+K revealed the follow-up, the four minute (and change) documentary, “Separate Together.”

“Separate Together” brings together Bruce Zaccagnino, the creator of Northlandz, the world’s largest model railroad located in Flemington, New Jersey, and Matt Albanese, a photographer who specializes in miniatures. The documentary takes place within Northlandz’s “52,000 square foot exhibit space featuring dozens of tiny towns, three-story papier-mâché mountains and hundreds of toy trains snaking through a warren of tunnels, past tiny windmills and over bridges made from thousands of toothpicks.” Albanese captures Northlandz in a unique way, utilizing the Sony QX100′s ability to fit into tight spaces to capture unique shots that wouldn’t have been possible with other cameras. It’s a great way to show off the QX100′s unique capabilities in fun, charming way.

The documentary is accompanied by an experience site which lets you explore Northlands from the unique vantage points available with the QX100, letting viewers zoom in on different areas and take their own shots, which they can then share on social media. It’s a great extension, and a fun way to explore the charm of Norhtlandz without having to make the schlep to Jersey. Stick around for credits and “Join Together” after the jump. continued…

Louisville Agency Creates Poem Generator for Valentine’s Day

GIT-LUV

Yes, lovebirds, Louisville-based agency OOHology has created a poem generator called the GIT-LUV 2000, designed to give you “a little help initiating intimacy this Valentine’s Day.”

Visitors to the GIT-LUV site are asked to pick from a list of descriptions that best fits their love life, such as “Single, full of regret,” “I just bet my fiancee 50 percent of everything I own that love is forever,” and “Promised my new spouse that the third time’s a charm.” Then, GIT-LUV 2000 randomly generates a unique poem, although they are often slight variations of what you’ve already seen, and despite claims that it “actually creates unique poems every time” it wasn’t all that long until a repeat came up. Our tipster described the site as “Slightly creepy, slightly hilarious,” although I’d say it hits on the former with far more frequency. We’ve selected a few of our favorite poems below. GIT-LUV 1

Diddy Joins Fiat Fold to the Tune of Pharrell’s ‘Happy’

Doner created a new global campaign called “Mirage” for FIAT, in promotion of their new Fiat 500L, the first four door vehicle from the automaker (which we guess is now officially Fiat Chrysler Automobiles). “Mirage” enlists the help of Diddy and Pharrell‘s hit “Happy,” which you may recall as the song from the world’s first 24-hour music video, and the soundtrack to Despicable Me 2.

“Mirage” is (as you might have guessed) set in the desert. Two lost travelers searching for rescue see Diddy drive by in a Fiat, but dismiss the sighting as a mirage. When they then stumble on Diddy‘s REVOLT soiree, they again dismiss the vision as a mirage, with one of the travelers pointing to the new Fiat 500L and saying, “The Fiat over there has four doors. Fiat only makes small cars, it’s not real.” The line draws attention to the misconception that Fiat only builds small cars as a way of introducing the new Fiat 500L, further cemented by the tagline, “Unbelievably Big” (which is sure to elicit snickers and/or “That’s what she said” jokes from certain corners of the ad community). In the spot, Diddy once again proves himself a much more talented comedic actor than rapper (for further evidence, see Made or Get Him to the Greek), delivering the spot’s punchline (which I won’t reveal here) with great timing.

Doner’s global campaign will roll out this Thursday, with the TV spot running both nationally and internationally, and will also include online components. Stick around for credits after the jump. continued…
