HUSH Designs Web Experience for Aerin Fragrances

Brooklyn-based design agency HUSH, who recently created the ambitious “Beauty of Night” for Estée Lauder, crafted an interactive web experience for lifestyle brand Aerin’s expansion into fragrances.

The website invites users to explore videos of the fragrances and the way each of the fragrances was sparked from Aerin Lauder‘s memories and experiences. The longest of these, at 1:30, is the above introduction to the fragrance line, explaining the importance of fragrances in Aerin’s life and exploring the evocative nature of scent and its ability to transport people in time and space. It’s a well-produced vignette that introduces both the line’s philosophy and the individual fragrances, even if it’s pretty much what you’d expect for a fragrance line. Other videos on the site briefly examine the individual fragrances and their ingredients.

More out of the ordinary is that site users can create their own packaging or monograms, using images of berries, flowers, and other fragrance ingredients, and share them on social media for a chance to win $3,500 worth of Aerin products.

“We took a simple and elegant approach to exploring the world of fragrance. It can be a science-heavy subject, but driven by artistry and craft – in the same way that wine and food are both art and science,” explains HUSH creative partner David Schwarz. “We were interested in the artistic, emotional story behind these creations and gave consumers the opportunity to engage on multiple levels.” Stay tuned for credits after the jump.

VB&P Quotes Queen in Star-Studded Audi Spot

Venables Bell & Partners have released a new, celebrity-packed spot for the release of the new Audi A3 entitled “Dues.”

The 60 second spot features celebrities reciting lines from Queen’s ever-popular “We Are The Champions,” inclduing comedian Ricky Gervais, chef David Chang (of Momofuku fame), photojournalist Lynsey Addario, comedian Kristen Schaal, gold medal winning boxer Claressa Shields, street artists Cyrcle, and inner city church choir Voices of Destiny. Lines to Queen’s anthem are delivered as a means of expressing the uncompromising nature of those who never settle, interspersed with shots of Audi’s latest in action and easing into Audi’s “Whatever you do, stay uncompromised” tagline. Between the bevy of celebrities and the instantly recognizable (and arguably overused) Queen song, the spot should succeed at getting people’s attention.

VB&P’s campaign extends the star power beyond the “Dues” spot, through an online video series called “Uncompromised Portraits” on Audi’s YouTube channel. Some highlights include “Names,” in which a child in the back seat reads mean tweets aloud to Gervais (highlighting the A3′s 4G LTE connectivity), and “Touch,” featuring David Chang showing off the vehicle’s MMI® touchpad with handwriting technology. It’s a clever extension of the campaign that does a lot to highlight the A3′s new features, and in the case of “Names” is arguably more entertaining than the television spot. You can watch “Names” below, and stick around for “Touch” after the jump. continued…

DDB Chicago Imagines Skittles Cloud As Pet, Problems Ensue

DDB Chicago continues bringing out the bizarre for Skittles in a new campaign complete with some perhaps unintended implications.

The new spot features a cloud named Freddie, who, when walked by an elderly woman “rains” Skittles after being pet. Now, the problem with portraying a product as something that comes out of a pet while being walked is…well, pretty obvious right? Okay, I get that Freddie is a cloud and that DDB has been doing strange stuff for Skittles for a while now, but you don’t want viewers asking, “Is that cloud pissing Skittles?” — a distinct possibility here. In the 30-second spot, “Cloud,” Freddie responds very differently when a curious onlooker attempts to pet him, ending with the spot-specific tagline “Pet The Rainbow. Taste The Rainbow.”

The campaign features two more 30-second adverts, each following the same oddball theme, with Freddie going to the vet and the groomers. Additionally, DDB Chicago teamed up with PR agency Olson to build a remote-controlled, Skittles-dispensing cloud. Built from the ground up, the cloud “features two unique dispensing functions and a variety of fun lighting and audio features.” It’s a high-tech evolution of The Rainbow team’s past Skittles-dispensing gifts like pinball machines and vending machines, and a pretty cool extension of the campaign (we’ll hear more about this later in the week). Stick around for credits and “Groomer” after the jump. continued…

Budweiser, Anomaly Kick Off ‘Rise As One’ World Cup Campaign

Today, Budweiser has officially launched its “Rise As One” campaign, developed by Anomaly, to promote its sponsorship of the 2014 FIFA World Cup. The basis of the campaign is a “fully integrated, global content series” centered around the the theme of honoring “the moments that unite football fans worldwide.”

Highlighting the campaign is the new spot “Believe As One,” which made its digital debut today and will air internationally as anticipation for the World Cup continues to grow.  The new spot, filmed in black and white by director Garth Davis “to truly highlight the passion and pride for the sport that unites fans around the world, irrespective of the team they support” stokes anticipation of the FIFA World Cup 2014 Brazil by showing the almost religious fervor fans across the globe bring to the game. The 60-second spot concludes with a group triumphantly raising their beers, followed by the “Rise As One” tagline.

“Football is unique in its ability to unite fans all over the globe and its unifying power is never more evident than when the world comes together during the FIFA World Cup,” Andrew Sneyd, Budweiser global VP, explains in a statement. “Through the Rise As One campaign and our new spot ‘Believe As One,’ Budweiser showcases the passion and building anticipation shared by fans and players the world over.”

In addition to the new spot, the folks at VICE (who are everywhere these days) are getting in on the action, partnering with Anomaly and Budweiser to launch “Budweiser Heroes,” which showcases “the real-life stories of individuals who have made a significant impact in their community and how their love of football transformed the lives of everyday people.” Beginning today, Budweiser is calling on fans to submit their own “Budweiser Heroes” stories. Budweiser and Vice will also be creating a series of digital shorts to serve as inspiration for the program. A few chosen winners will receive an all-expenses paid trip to the 2014 FIFA World Cup Brazil, tickets to a football match and a three-day stay at the Budweiser Hotel in Rio de Janeiro.” You can learn more about the “Rise As One” campaign at the official website, and stick around for credits after the jump. continued…

W+K Brings Back Terry Crews, Sans Shirt of Course, for Digital Effort

W+K Portland have launched an campaign for Old Spice’s new line of electric shavers and trimmers (price range: $50-80), and have enlisted the help of a familiar face to help launch the new products.

Current Brooklyn Nine-Nine star Terry Crews, who helped introduce Old Spice Shave Gel last year with the spot “Baby”, returns to help market Old Spice’s foray into the shavers and trimmers world. The 45-second digital effort, “Get Shaved in the Face,” is reminiscent of Crews’ iconic work for the brand from years past, with a predictable amount of screaming and general mishigas. In the spot, Crews is in the process of shaving when a mini-crews realizes that he is a hair. As you might expect, things get pretty crazy by the conclusion of the spot, which you can watch for yourself above.

While the strategy might not have the shock value it did years ago, it makes a lot of sense to call on the iconic Crews for the introduction of a new product line. Among the products being introduced are: Old Spice Hair Clipper (“Like a lawn mower for your hair with 8 adjustable settings.”), Old Spice Beard and Head Trimmer, and Old Spice Shaver (“Like 3 smooth barbers for your face, this shaver features a triple-action cutting system with twin foils that shave off stubble and an integrated cutter that shortens longer hairs…”). Stay tuned for credits and a “Baby” refresher after the jump. continued…

Anomaly, Decon Present Roy Choi, ‘Google Glass Explorer’

Last summer Google started distributing their Google Glass to select “Explorers” for their “If I Had Glass Campaign.” Among those who loved the product was renowned chef and food-truck pioneer Roy Choi, whose famed Kogi BBQ truck, where his Korean-Mexican tacos are a star, is a fixture in Los Angeles. Choi, whose pedigree includes stints at Le Bernardin and the Beverly Hilton, enjoys working with Google Glass because he can search for and follow along with recipes using only his voice — quite useful when your hands are covered in salsa verde, kimchi, or curry paste.

For a new spot by agency Anomaly and production company Decon, Choi decided to reinterpret Irish cooking in honor of St. Patrick’s Day. He searches for recipes and puts his own spin on the classic corned beef and cabbage, turning it into the “East Los Leprechaun Burrito,” which includes plenty of the celebrated chef’s own signature touches (yes, it has kimchi). In the process, Choi demonstrates the Glass’ capabilities, including when he’s interrupted by a phone call, and seamlessly switches from recording his recipe to the call at hand and back. The 1:50 spot is a lot of fun, and succeeds at making the Google Glass look like a product with appeal beyond neckbeard-sporting tech nerds. If watching the spot leaves you hungry for an “East Los Leprechaun Burrito,” fear not, we’ve included the recipe, along with credits, after the jump. continued…

Saatchi & Saatchi Italy Launches CoorDown Campaign for World Down Syndrome Day

For the third consecutive year, Saatchi & Saatchi is launching a campaign for CoorDown in celebration of World Down Syndrome Day, which will occur on March 21st. The theme for this year’s World Down Syndrome Day is “the right to happiness and well-being of people with Down syndrome,” with the goal being to “promote a culture of diversity and true integration into society, especially in the worlds of school and work.”

Saatchi & Saatchi’s campaign was inspired by an email that an pregnant mother, expecting a child with Down’s syndrome, sent to CoorDown. “What kind of life will my child have?” the mother asks.

To respond to the expectant mother, and others like her, Saatchi & Saatchi filmed responses from 15 individuals with Down syndrome from across Europe, in their native languages. Through the CoorDown YouTube channel this group replies to the mother’s question, answering that her son can expect a happy life, just like theirs. “He’ll be able to hug you,” says one man; “He’ll be able to talk and tell you he loves you,” promises another girl. They explain that the woman can expect her son to go to school, and later get a job and be able to take her out to dinner on his salary. “Sometimes it will be difficult. Very difficult. Almost impossible.” the group admits, “But isn’t it like that for all mothers?” It’s a really touching video, and a perfect encapsulation of this year’s World Down Syndrome Day theme.

This year, CoorDown Onlus — Coordinator of the National Association of people with Down syndrome — will lead “an international project which includes ten associations from nine different countries: Italy, France, Spain, Croatia, Germany, England, Russia, United States and New Zealand.” The “Dear Future Mom” also has a social component, built around the official hashtag #DearFutureMom.

As mentioned, the campaign marks the third consecutive year Saatchi & Saatchi has teamed up with CoorDown. Their previous two campaigns met with tremendous success, including 11 Lions at the last two Cannes International Festivals of Creativity and a Grand Prix at ADCE. Stick around for credits after the jump. continued…

Creature Launches Social Gaming Platform for DoubleDown Casino

Seattle-based agency Creature has put together a new campaign for DoubleDown Casino, “the world’s only place to play authentic Vegas games on Facebook and mobile devices.”

The campaign launch the social gaming platform with a series of videos that show the service bringing Vegas-style pizazz to boring, everyday situations. In the first spot, “Bedtime” a woman opens the gambling application after her partner falls asleep, spicing up what would otherwise be a night trolling the Internet for kitten photos (not that there’s anything wrong with that). When she opens up DoubleDown Casino, she prompts a cheesy, Vegas-style song and dance routine. The lyrics, of course are about how her romance novel isn’t making the cut and what she really want is slots. The similarly minded “Office” swaps out the bedroom for a bored man at the office who finds DoubleDown a better alternative to going out for fast food.

In addition to the videos, the campaign also features an interactive web experience called Hot Streak Finder. In Creature’s own words: “We asked ourselves, ‘This St. Patrick’s day, what’s the best way to drive traffic to DoubleDown Casino?’ And we answered that question with, ‘by exploding a live-action leprechaun through interactive tickling. Of course.’” Of course, it almost goes without saying.

FCB, Canal+ Create ‘Wilhelm Scream’ Mockumentary

The newly Draft-less FCB worked with Canal+ to create a mockumentary on the famous “Wilhelm scream” entitled “The Woman Who Can’t Watch Movies.”

“The Wilhelm scream,” in case anyone needs a refresher, is the famous stock audio scream recorded by Sheb Wooley and named after the character Private Wilhelm in the 1953 western The Charge of the Feather River, although it was first used in the 1951 film Distant Drums. It saw a resurgence in popularity as a stock sound effect following its use in Star Wars and Indiana Jones. It is now so ubiquitous (it has been dubbed in over 200 films) that it has become something of an in-joke, used in recent years in films by Pixar, the Lord of the Rings triology, and countless other movies. (There are rumors that directors Steven Spielberg, George Lucas and Quentin Tarantino “maintain a bet as to who has used the “Wilhelm scream” more.”)

“The Woman Who Can’t Watch Movies” follows the (supposed) story of Sheb’s widow, Linda Dotson Wooley. Linda complains that she can’t watch movies anymore because she “just can’t bear to hear the sound of Sheb screaming out in pain over and over again.” After introducing Linda and her “condition” — a clever (although kind of sad) way to call attention to the sound effect’s ubiquity — the mockumentary introduces viewers to Canal+’s Scream Bank, “a catalog of donated screams for industry professionals to use in place of Sheb’s.” A few comically-off screams are then shown dubbed into a film, a great display of why the “Wilhelm Scream” has become such a well-worn cliche. The video is a teaser for Leave Wilhelm Alone, an upcoming documentary on the “Wilhelm scream.” Stick around for credits after the jump, and feel free to head on over to Canal+’s site and record a scream of your own. continued…

Zambezi Creates ‘SXsports Playbook’ to Help Navigate SXSW Events

ZambeziThis year, for the first time ever, there will be a sports component to SXSW in Austin, Texas. To celebrate this, and to help festival goers select from the seemingly endless list of panels, LA-based sports and entertainment creative shop Zambezi created “SXsports Playbook.”

SXsports Playbook is a website where visitors fill out a survey of 12 either/or questions. At the conclusion of the survey, users are “directed to one of five curated panel groupings comprised of a ‘must-see’ sports lineup to suit their individual interests (and maybe even an option to avoid them altogether).” It’s a formula we’ve seen plenty of times before, but this time it just may end up being useful for those caught navigating the labyrinth of events at SXSW. Give it a try for yourself if you’re headed to SXSW, and stick around for credits after the jump. continued…

IKEA Transforms Cosplay Mess

IKEA is certainly no stranger to goofy promotional videos, and their latest centers around a cosplaying civil servant from Singapore named Frank.

Franks’s hobby is beginning to make life in his small apartment difficult. With “many costumes and lots of raw materials lying around,” there’s not room for much else in Frank’s room. So, in a stop-motion sequence featuring anime-tastic music, the IKEA crew comes in and cleans things up. Demonstrating IKEA’s storage solutions, all Frank’s costumes remain in his room, neatly stored away, and there’s room for him to, you know, walk around and stuff.

“Is this even my room?” Frank asks. As he walks around appreciating the transformation, the video highlights certain IKEA products responsible for the improvements, closing with the “Make Space Better” tagline. It’s a pretty clever way to show how IKEA’s storage solutions can transform a small space, although we suspect some may be turned off by the whole cosplay thing.

ROKKAN, WellPoint Launch ‘The ABCs of Disease’

In what may be the cutest advertisement you see today, ROKKAN teamed up with healthcare giant WellPoint to create “The ABCs of Disease,” “a creative extension of WellPoint’s Real Health campaign, a full scale digital & social initiative aimed at simplifying and educating Americans around the often complex landscape of healthcare and insurance.”

“The ABCs of Disease” is a fun video in which Forrest Kline, of powerpop band HelloGoodbye, leads a group from the imagined Florence Nightingale Middle School through a pageant depicting “26 reasons to protect your health” from A-Z. It’s an infectious little number that ROKKAN and WellPoint hopes will catch on and convince viewers of the need for health insurance. “The ABCs of Disease” features an original song, handmade costumes and adorable cast of characters from asthma to bacteria to narcolepsy. In addition to the long-form video, the campaign also includes “a range of elements from short form pre-roll spots and bite-sized video content to the website, which serves as the digital conversation hub.” You can check out the full length video above, and stick around for “The ABCs of Disease: Catch it Now!” after the jump. continued…

Riester Releases ‘Farm’ for Voskos Greek Yogurt

Phoenix-based agency Riester teamed up with Backyard Productions to create “Farm,” a new spot for Voskos Greek Yogurt.

In addition to having the word “farm” in the title, Riester’s 30 second spot also has a similar (perhaps Chipotle-inspired) approach to Chobani’s “Farmland” spot. Like that ad, “Farm” emphasizes the natural ingredients they put in their Greek yogurt (in this case Voskos), while employing pastoral shots of cows and fresh fruit. Unlike the Chobani spot, “Farm” doesn’t spend time taking down the competition, instead launching into the brand’s virtues, via the cheery voiceover and footage of a girl picking fruit with her family and enjoying a cup of Voskos while sitting on a fence. It’s a slightly simpler tactic than Chobani’s, foregoing the takedown of competitors for more of an emphasis on wholesomeness. The brand’s “Happiness in Every Spoonful” tagline exemplifies the slight difference in approach — whereas Chobani takes a stab at competitors (while opening themselves up to scrutiny), Voskos just wants to let you know that their yogurt tastes good and will make you happy. Iris Launches ‘Fast or Fail’ Game for Adidas Featuring Lionel Messi

Iris has launched a new campaign for Adidas called “Fast or Fail,” to promote Lionel Messi‘s new adiZero f50 Messi boot.

The campaign is centered around “an innovative real-time reactive game experience requiring players to beat opponents down an endless pitch and reach Rio de Janeiro in the fastest time possible.” Players will be given the opportunity to win tickets to the 2014 FIFA World Cup to see Lionel Messi play. In an interesting twist, the game is driven by social media — with “more mentions of Messi, the faster you go in the game.”

Iris also created a “Fast or Fail” video to promote the game and the new Messi boot. To create the video, they shot Messi on a green screen backdrop, and then worked with “Media Monks to create the CGI-built polygonised world you see in the game and film.” You can check out the 1:35 video above, and head here to try your hand at the #fastorfail game.

SuperHeroes Amsterdam Releases Creepy New LG Spot

SuperHeroes Amsterdam just released a creepy online spot promoting LG’s new G Flex phone called “The Most Human Phone Ever.”

The 2 minute spot imagines the G Flex as a kind of second skin, which morphs into who you’re talking to. A guy named Dan is celebrating his birthday when he receives the phone as a gift. When the phone (which has blended with his hand) starts buzzing, he answers it to find it’s his buddy on vacation calling from the beach. He’s attacked by a crab which creates a cut in Dan’s hand (really weird, right?) that we see heal in a matter of seconds — a way of showing off the G Flex’s self healing back cover. Believe it or not, following a false ending, it actually gets creepier from here.

Rogier Vijverberg, creative director and founder of SuperHeroes, explains: “Our mission is to bring out the superpower in anyone and anything. How awesome would it be if your phone could morph into your body? You would never drop it down the toilet again for a start. It really excites us to work with such brave innovators as LG, who are not afraid to challenge the realms of possibility.”

Achtung! Asks, ‘Would You Trade Your Car for an Unknown Porsche?’

Chances are you’d give up your car for a Porsche, right? The folks over at independent Dutch agency ACHTUNG! are betting on it, delivering an interesting an interesting new campaign where they ask people to trade their car for an unrevealed new Porsche model.

Driven by the insight that “40% of Panamera’s had been pre-ordered before the model had even hit the road” and enthusiasts often pre-order a new Porsche model based on little more than Internet photos, ACHTUNG! has introduced the new interactive platform “Blind Trade,” to see if people show the same enthusiasm for a completely unknown Porsche.

Starting today, car owners can offer their current vehicle for trade at www.porsche.nl/blindtrade. During the first phase of the campaign, the new model’s identity will remain a mystery, with a new feature of the new model revealed every two days for three weeks. The earlier you decide to trade, the greater your chances to bring home the new model. 2,000 cars were offered as a trade for the new Porsche model in the first hour alone, so there are no shortage of takers. In addition to how early it is offered, the value of your trade will also determine your chances of bringing home the new Porsche model. On March 31st, the winner will drive off in the new ride, “without having to pay any additional costs,” at which time the Dutch Porsche importer will take ownership of the winner’s trade-in. “Blind Trade” has to be one of the more interesting online initiatives we’ve seen in recent memory, and serves as a powerful illustration of the strength of Porsche’s brand. Head on over to the site now if you want to have any chance of taking home the new Porsche (or if you’re just curious to learn more about the campaign), and stick around for credits after the jump. continued…

Dare, Penguin Canada Unveil Digital Companion to Best-Selling Novel

Dare Toronto teamed up with Penguin Books Canada to create a digital companion to Khaled Hosseini’s best selling novel And the Mountains Echoed, a project almost a year in the making.

Entitled “The Echo Project,” the site is a “a digital exploration of each of the 402 pages of the novel.” It’s an interesting proposition, and one that attracted many collaborators, including “contributions from Khaled Hosseini himself, magazine editors, TV & Radio personalities, producers, authors, painters and illustrators” — each of whom chose a page of the novel and either offered up ideas of what that page should look like on The Echo Project or told the team at Dare how the page made them feel and left it up to them to develop further. The pages represented on The Echo Project include a “unique assortment of interactive puzzles, motion graphics, videos, illustrations, audio and video that allow the reader to explore themes that are complimentary to the story, like references to history and culture.”

“We hoped it would evolve and take on a life of its own. And it has,” said Paul Little, Dare’s executive creative director. “The concept was a framework to allow any content that helped embellish, explain or express. And because of the range of content, it needed it to be flexible enough to allow for spontaneity and fan contribution.”

Dare Toronto and Penguin believe that The Echo Project “is a sign of how book publishers will evolve their launch strategies to offer different reading experiences for avid and casual book readers.” As André Louis, director of planning at Dare explains, “Avid book readers got to co-create and live a more immersive book experience; casual readers get the ‘DVD-extras’ that go along with the paperback. We’re leveraging avid Hosseini fans’ word of mouth to influence those who buy a few books a year in an attempt to sell more to casual readers.”

Dare and Penguin are no strangers to exploring the intersection of books and digital, having “created the MyFry app which allowed users to read British writer and actor Stephen Fry’s second autobiography in a non-linear, theme-based fashion via mobile” back in 2011. The Echo Project will be unveiled in its entirety and promoted in the paperback edition of And the Mountains Echoed scheduled for publication this June. For an idea of what to expect from The Echo Project, check out the video above, or head on over to the site for a more complete experience. Credits after the jump. continued…

W+K Portland Explores ‘The 7 Wonders of Oregon’

W+K Portland has a new campaign for the Oregon Tourism Commison, extolling the virtues of their home state with a video called “The 7 Wonders of Oregon.”

The :60 anthem spot features all 7 “wonders of Oregon,” attempting to “inspire active travelers looking for authentic experiences” with Oregon’s natural landmarks. While Oregon’s natural beauty speaks for itself, the production of the spot was no small task. It was “carried out by a crew of 15 people shooting for 14 days straight and driving more than 3,000 miles across Oregon, often camping along the way.” All of the individuals involved were “Oregonians with a genuine passion for the wonders they are representing” and the spot is clearly a labor of love.

“This is some of the strongest work for Travel Oregon in our 25-year history of working together,” W+K chairman co-namesake Dan Wieden says, adding, “What I really like about the creative, aside from how beautiful Oregon looks, is it gives people a checklist of things to see and do.”

In addition to the anthem spot, the integrated campaign includes digital, social, search, public relations and consumer engagement elements. The latter includes “an influencer tour, targeted media outreach, a program to surprise and delight visitors, and a Facebook sweepstakes to drive visibility and fan acquisition.” In the social realm, visitors are invited to share their Oregon photos with the hashtag #traveloregon, with top picks on Travel Oregon content channels “to inspire others long after the paid media portion of the campaign concludes.” In a nice touch, the digital campaign includes not only trip inspiration, but also trip planning tools and resources such as itineraries, links to purchase plane tickets and special travel deals on TravelOregon.com. If I wasn’t already dying to get to the Pacific Northwest, this campaign would do a pretty good job convincing me that Oregon is a great travel destination.
