Can This Ridiculously Fancy Glass Make Your Coca-Cola Taste Better?

Treating Coca-Cola like it's high-end wine is ridiculous—the stuff of parody. And yet the world's most popular sugar-water brand has graciously partnered with luxury glassware maker Riedel for your smirking amusement.

The product of their collaboration, a $20 glass that the brands claim is specially designed to favor Coke's flavor profile, may in fact make your $1 soda seem to taste better.

Or, for free, you can enjoy the surreal experience of hearing Riedel CEO Georg Riedel talk about Coke as if it were just like a rare wine for which his company also produces special crystal. "This glass starts with the introduction of the aromas, beautiful lemon, citrus, lime character, malt characteristics, the mouth feel, the effervescence," he tells Fast Company. "The glass orchestrates the sweetness on the palate."

In theory, the campaign is a clever nod to the lore that says Coke is better in its classic glass bottles. Over on Coke's website, in the brand's interview with itself, Riedel also spins a yarn harkening back to his youth, when he rationed a 12-pack of the soda as a rare treat in the midst of post-WWII scarcity. That is a nice story. It is no longer the 1950s. Coca-Cola does not want you to ration soda. It wants you to buy more. Lots more.

In reality, Coca-Cola isn't snobbish or even fancy. Coca-Cola is populist. It's accessible. Pretending otherwise comes across as a bizarre form of self-mockery. Unless the whole exercise is a form of trollish performance art—in which case, Coca-Cola has already won.

Also, wine is probably better for you.

Generate Random Art Projects with ‘What the F*** is My Art Project?’

WTF Is My Art ProjectNeed an art project fast but don’t have any ideas? Check out “What the Fuck is My Art Project?” — a parody site that randomly generates art project ideas, possibly from the same team that produced “What the Fuck is My Brief?” (although that’s unconfirmed at the moment).

Based around the idea that “most of the popular crap on the Internet is just rehashed popular and obscure cultural and artistic references mashed together,” the site is built around an algorithm that does exactly that. Leading to such gold as a “Cyberpunk Darth Vader Board Game,” “Victorian Big Lebowski Mobile App,” “Grunge Wonder Years Bedtime Story” and of course “Neo Realist Weird Al Fanfic,” the site parodies Internet culture while producing some ideas that, in a bizarre kind of way, could actually be pretty cool (I’m looking at you, “Grunge Wonder Years Bedtime Story”). The site seems to have enough information programmed into it to avoid repeating suggestions for some time, so most people will never see the same thing twice, which is too often a problem with these types of projects. Give the site a try for yourself and you may just wind up on Laughing Squid or the front page of Reddit.

Twitter Backlash Hits U.K. Government

It’s not often that fiscal policy is responsible for the top trending hashtag on Twitter, but a patronizing ad by the U.K. government has propelled it to the top of the social media conversation.

The ad, created in-house to promote on social media the U.K.’s newly reduced taxes on bingo and beer, reads, “Bingo! Cutting the bingo tax and beer duty to help hardworking people do more of the things they enjoy.” It was tweeted by the Conservative Party chairman, Grant Shapps, along with the command, “RT to spread the word.”

Referring to hardworking people as “they” underlines the distance between privileged politicians and ordinary voters. Rivals seized on the mistake, and social media was awash with memes including, “That’s what you wretched proles get up to, isn’t it? We’ll be over here counting our money,” or “Cutting the NHS, police, and welfare safety net while patronizing hardworking people with bingo and beer.”

See the Amazing Transformation of These Big Brand Logos [Infographic]

Evolution_of_Logos_cropped.jpg

Ah, yes. The logo. That emblem which represents the essence of a brand in a way that communicates its purpose in mere seconds. Or at least that is the hope. Over the years, brands have evolved their logos as both the times and the brand, itself have changed.

Taking a 100+ year look, this infographic from Graphic Design Degree Hub examines the transformation of logos from Pepsi, Coke, Shell, Mercedes, Kodak, IBM, Chevrolet, BP, UPS, Ford, Xerox, Canon, Walmart, Apple, Microsoft and others.

Some early logos from Kodak, IBM and UPS look nothing like their current iterations.

Also explored are logo screw up like the London 2012 Olympics and the Arlington Pediatric Center, both of which connoted something completely different from their intended goal.

“Free to Play”, um documentário da Valve sobre o milionário torneio de “Dota 2”

No ano passado, na ocasião do campeonato brasileiro de “League of Legends”, falamos um pouco aqui no B9 do crescimento e importância das competições de games, os chamados eSports.

Se você não ficou convencido, um documentário produzido pela Valve certamente vai abrir a sua cabeça. “Free to Play: The Movie” segue a rotina de três competidores profissionais durante o primeiro torneio internacional de “Dota 2”.

GOP: ‘Honey Badger’ Data Fueled Absentee Surge in Florida Special Election

Republican David Jolly took the special election for Florida’s 13th district House seat last week by a tight margin, and the GOP thinks data had a lot to do with it. The congressional race may not be a direct bellwether for this year’s midterm elections, but if anything, it portends one thing for Republicans: Data-analysis lessons learned during the Gulf Coast battle against Democrat Alex Sink will be applied heading into November.

Getting out the absentee ballot vote was key to the GOP win, insiders say. Now the party plans to take the analytical approach it used to decipher which voters it should target to vote absentee beyond Pinellas County, Fla.

National Republican Congressional Committee Chairman Greg Walden “has invested a lot of time, resources and effort so our team can be ready to scale this to as many races as possible,” said Gerrit Lansing, digital director of the National Republican Congressional Committee. Mr. Walden represents Oregon’s second district.

Consumers Salute Dr. Pepper’s 70s Flashbacks With Parodies of the Parody

Travel to Dr. Pepper TEN with me and taste the Bold Country.

As a child of the 1970s and a fan of John Denver, you can see why Deutsch’s 70s flashbacks appeal to me. Nostalgia is a trip.

To evoke an authentic 70s feel, Deutsch made an effort to get the images to appear historic. The commercials were shot on 16-millimeter film, then copied onto a VHS video tape, which was then baked to age the images further.

The Grizzly Adams meets Hamm’s commercial-inspired work is now spawning some original reproductions, a.k.a. honorary spoofs, which is high praise for any ad campaign (much higher praise than even the most prestigious industry award, if you ask me).

Of course, in the spoof above, Miller Lite gets a starring role, not Dr. Pepper TEN.

See what happens when you don’t have attentive PAs on the set?

Defy Media Nauseates with Hot Pockets ‘Sandwich Showdown’

There are no words to describe just how awful SMOSH’s “Meat Vs. Crust Rap Battle” is. The video is leading voting for Defy Media’s new digital campaign for Hot Pockets (two words innocent enough on their own, that, when combined, provoke an unmistakable feeling of terrible nausea).

Defy Media’s campaign for the lazy college student’s standby, fresh off a recent product recall due to possibly tainted meat, is a March Madness style bracket battle called “Sandwich Showdown.” The musical competition, which began March 18th and is timed to coincide with March Madness, pits #TeamMeat against #TeamCrust; with SMOSH and The Warp Zone facing off to win the chance to represent #TeamMeat, and Brittani Louise Taylor facing Taryn Southern to represent #TeamCrust. Voting for “Sandwich Showdown,” which takes place at Hot Pockets’ Facebook page, is still in its semifinal stage. So if you’d like to cast your vote such gems as “I’m in Crust with You” and “Love at First Bite” you only have eleven days to do so. To be fair, the other entrants aren’t so bad as SMOSH. Brittani Louise Taylor‘s “I’m In Crust With You” is affably ridiculous in a much more watchable way, complete with life size Hot Pockets guy as her long-lost love. She gets my vote, or would if I cared enough to cast a vote at least.

“We’re pumped to put our own musical spin on the Hot Pockets brand for the ultimate Sandwich Showdown,” said SMOSH’s Anthony Padilla and Ian Hecox. “This is going to be a delicious lyrical competition like you’ve never seen and we can’t wait to face-off and let our viewers decide which one of us reigns supreme.” This statement marks the only recorded instance of “Hot Pockets”and “delicious” being used within two sentences. Stick around for “I’m In Crust With You” after the jump, and if you haven’t seen it you owe it to yourself to check out Jim Gaffigan‘s Hot Pockets bit, which I can’t help thinking of every time I hear anything to do with the culinary missiles of misery. continued…

Crash the App, Break Twitter: Smashing Things is the New Shape of Media Triumph

How do you break through with your brand in the digital age? Well, there’s a new measure for social success emerging — breaking things. The finale for “True Detective” was so sought after by app viewers that the demand temporarily broke HBO GO. That came just after viewers trying to watch the Oscars on ABC’s live stream also hit error upon error, and Ellen DeGeneres’ Oscars selfie was retweeted so many times that it “broke Twitter.”

“Due to overwhelmingly popular demand for #TrueDetective, we’ve been made aware of an issue affecting some users. Please try again soon,” the official HBO Go Twitter account posted at 10 p.m. that Sunday. Whether HBO is just great at spinning an accidental outage or this possibility was not entirely unforeseen or unwelcome, this sort of thing is going to become a sign of the times.

Are our social platforms and brand apps so flimsy in their foundations that they can’t stand a good sustained run of interested, eager fans during peak traffic events? Shouldn’t possible outages for obviously high-demand events be planned for?

Elections in India, one of the world’s biggest democracies, often suffer from malpractices such as politicians buying votes from the needy masses for a few hundred rupees per vote. Democracy of Truth, an initiative by nikotin, aims to create awareness during the coming elections about this detrimental practice that eventually leads to the appointment of corrupt people in positions of great power, despite a severe lack of credentials.
