Reporters Without Borders: Two Sides

The human rights organization Reporters Without Borders demonstrates the ambivalence of the Winter Olympics in Sochi. An imposing city-light-campaign shows both sides: truth and lies. For this purpose the advertising agency Philipp and Keuntje juxtaposed controversial quotes, thereby showing the significance of a free press for the ability to judge. Instead of one billboard with three posters passing through, colored layers alternate and in doing so expose quotes with different content. The campaign shows the importance of the work of journalists, who are being persecuted and threatened in Russia. These are the journalists Reporters Without Borders fights for daily.

Leo Burnett Chicago Explores Studio of Thomas Bloch

Leo Burnett Chicago and music company Sizzer Amsterdam have released a behind-the-scenes documentary on the unusual, ethereal music Thomas Bloch provided for the agency’s recent Re/Max ad, “Dream With Your Eyes Open.”

To create his music Bloch relies on a series of unorthodox instruments, including the glass harmonica, christal baschet, and ondes martenot (most notably played by Johnny Greenwood of Radiohead). Bloch has worked as a musician, composer and producer with artists like Daft Punk, Gorillaz, and Tom Waits. In the mini-documentary Leo Burnett explores Bloch’s studio as Bloch explains the “infinite possibilities” of his instruments. Bloch’s music really brought the surreal “Dream With Your Eyes Open” spot together and the folks at Leo Burnett were clearly fascinated by the collaboration with Bloch and wanted to explore his world further.

“We wanted to create cinematic music with a contemporary, artful feel that would guide the emotional transitions between the gorgeous dream sequence, nightmarish crescendo and ultimately bring the resolution to reality,” said Chris Clark, senior music producer at Leo Burnett.

Stick around for credits and the Re/Max “Dream With Your Eyes Open” spot after the jump. continued…

Modern Farmer, Mag for Farm-to-Table Crowd, Joins Usual Suspects in National Magazine Award Nominations

The Whole Foods crowd is going to be well represented at this year’s National Magazine Awards.

Modern Farmer, a quarterly introduced last March to cover both farmers and the farm-to-table movement, has picked up two National Magazine Award nominations from the American Society of Magazine Editors, one for general excellence among special-interest magazines and one in the magazine section category for its “Modern Farmer Handbook.”

The magazine, published in Hudson, N.Y. and found in the Whole Foods checkout aisle (among other places) has earned plaudits for its coverage and its covers, which have featured a rooster, a goat, a sheep and, most recently, a pig. It’s also aired 24-hour live feeds of its cover subjects on its website. (Ad Age last year named it a magazine brand “to watch,” one of three on a list accompanying the annual Magazine A-List.)

More Pay-TV Consolidation? Dish Said to Approach DirecTV About Merger

Dish Network Chairman Charlie Ergen recently contacted DirecTV CEO Mike White to discuss a merger of the two satellite TV companies, according to several people with knowledge of the matter.

Mr. Ergen made the approach in response to Comcast Corp.’s plan to buy Time Warner Cable for $45 billion, one of the people said, asking not to be identified discussing confidential information. Mr. White is reluctant to push forward with formal talks out of concern regulators may block the deal because the two companies directly compete with each other, another person said.

DirecTV is the largest U.S. satellite-TV operator, with about 20 million paying subscribers. Dish is No. 2 with about 14 million subscribers, and also has a spectrum portfolio that may be valued at almost $26 billion, according to Bloomberg Industries. Dish has said it remains open to all options to monetize the U.S. airwaves, including building its own network or teaming up with an existing carrier, such as Verizon Communications Inc. or AT&T.
