Boko Halal: The omitted letters

Boko Haram, which means Western Education is a Sin, is the name of a deadly militant Islamist Organization that has been terrorizing the Northern part of Nigeria. They have attacked the United Nations building, bombed media houses, slaughtered children and women in their hundreds of thousands. The Human Rights Watch categorizes it as a Civil War.

Strategy:
We use the name of this terrorist organisation against them by flipping Boko Haram for Boko Halal, which means in Arabic; Education is Virtuous.

Idea:
To show how the minds of kids can be easily brainwashed into terrorism,
we remove the letters ‘L’ in the word Boko Halal. So, this created a mix up with the name of the terrorist group Boko Haram. It helped to build momentum on the need to stand up for this cause. This ad was rejected by the two largest Newspaper houses in Nigeria, but eventually we got it published on 24th of February 2014.

O que uma mulher precisa fazer para ganhar mais na Suécia?

Conforme vamos nos aproximando de 8 de março, data em que se comemora o Dia Internacional da Mulher, começam a pipocar campanhas em torno da igualdade de direitos entre os gêneros, seja para lembrar que elas podem fazer qualquer coisa ou ainda para destacar que profissionais do sexo feminino ainda têm salários menores que os do sexo masculino, apesar da a carga de trabalho ser a mesma.

Daí que, na Suécia, Annelie Nordström, presidente da Kommunal, resolveu responder à pergunta que não quer calar: “O que uma mulher precisa fazer para ganhar mais?”. A resposta é curta e indigesta: se tornar um homem. E, para isso, são necessários apenas 47 segundos, como mostra o vídeo acima.

O filme dá continuidade à premiada campanha Be a Man, criada pela agência Volontaire com o objetivo de mostrar que muito pouco se mudou nas últimas três décadas no país, quando o assunto é igualdade salarial para ambos os gêneros. A solução, então, foi promover uma “mudança de sexo” em Annelie, que convidou outras mulheres a fazerem o mesmo. Quem sabe não seja o começo de uma mudança?

Disruptive Charlie Ergen Now Leads Race to Take On Cable With Online TV


In the race to deliver TV over the Internet, Charlie Ergen’s Dish Network Corp. is pulling ahead. And that may have implications for marketers and other media companies that have grown familiar with Mr. Ergen’s penchant for disrupting established businesses.

With a groundbreaking agreement this week with Walt Disney Co., the satellite-TV company is poised to be the first to offer an internet-based competitor to cable TV, a new kind of business that other major companies such as Intel and Apple Inc. have tried — and so far failed — to deliver.

The deal gave Dish the rights to carry the Disney Channel, ABC and ESPN online in a service known as over-the-top, or OTT, because it runs over an internet connection. In exchange, Mr. Ergen agreed to put limits on Dish’s ad-skipping technology — essentially leveraging one disruptive tech to lay groundwork for something perhaps even more transformative.

Stella Artois Presents, ‘The Chalice Symphony’

In one of the more intriguing and unusual projects we’ve seen lately, Stella Artois teamed up with “musical craftsman” Andy Cavatorta (who has collaborated with Bjork, among others) and indie rock band Cold War Kids to create “The Chalice Symphony.”

As you may imagine, “The Chalice Symphony” was created using Stella Artois chalices as instruments. As you may not have imagined, Cavatorta worked with Stella Artois to create four distinct instruments out of their chalices: the Pyrophone, the Star Harp, the Violina, and the Hive. Stella Artois have released videos documenting the creation of each of these distinct instruments. The Hive, for example, plays chalices with tiny piano hammers, while the Pyrophone “works a lot like a church organ, except it uses flame.” The Star Harp “plays itself, with graceful, mechanical planetary motion of its arms,” while the Violina bows the gold rim of the chalice for a violin-like sound.

“The Chalice Symphony” project from Stella Artois, Andy Cavatorta and Cold War Kids is a year in the making. Howard Roark Drives a Cadillac ELR—So Can You

American exceptionalism is a strange concept to build a car commercial on. Even for Detroit.

It makes me think the Koch brothers are financing this new Cadillac ELR campaign, covertly of course. How else to account for the brazenness of the socio-political speech?

Cadillac and its agency, Rogue (a group culled from three IPG agencies—Hill Holliday, Lowe and Campbell Ewald) want to stand out and this work does stand out. The ad is effective and disturbing, at the same time.

I feel like the brief made it clear: “Let’s NOT be Prius.” The creative team at Rogue took that thinking and delivered the ultimate anti-Prius spot.

Cadillac is clearly not interested in courting white, well-educated liberals from the suburbs. They want the hard-driving set to get behind the wheel of its electric vehicles. The ELR is the anti-Prius and at $75,000, a slightly more affordable alternate to a Tesla.

Craig Bierley, Cadillac’s advertising director, spoke to Ad Age in hopes that he might clear up some questions that people have raised about the spot.

For instance, some people believe the spot is aimed at the richest 1%.

Not so, says Bierley. Rather than millionaires, the spot’s targeted at customers who make around $200,000 a year. They’re consumers with a “little bit of grit under their fingernails” who “pop in and out of luxury” when and how they see fit, he said. “These are people who haven’t been given anything. Every part of success they’ve achieved has been earned through hard work and hustle. . . . One of the ways they reward themselves for their hard work is through the purchase of a luxury car,” he said.

I appreciate this extra bit of clarification. If you inherited money, or got to where you are today through luck, connections, or a state-sponsored education, buy a Tesla.

Saatchi & Saatchi NZ Helps Kiwis Hold on to Summer for L&P

It’s hard to relate to, as below freezing temperatures continue here in the northeast US, but in New Zealand people are just returning from summer holiday. Saatchi & Saatchi New Zealand has launched a new campaign for L&P in an attempt to help Kiwis hold on to that summer feeling as they return to work and school.

Beginning this week, L&P is offering people in Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch “the chance to swap their shoes for jandals, bring a bit of summer to their workplace, or even take an impromptu urban dip to cool off.” It’s an interesting outdoor campaign for a product that many associate with summer. And who wouldn’t want a free towel or flip-flops (jandals if you’re in New Zealand, apparently)?

As Saatchi & Saatchi creative director Guy Roberts explains, “We’ve all experienced that sinking feeling when the holidays are over and we’re forced to hang up our togs, get back into our work clothes and re-join the commuter crowds to work or Uni. You’re back at your desk and reduced to watching the best days of summer from your office or classroom window. For many kiwis, L&P and summer go hand in hand and we hope this campaign will help kiwis hold on to that great summer feeling just a little bit longer.”

The campaign will roll out over the next six weeks, with “a range of customised ad-shels, street posters and promotional partnerships.” As the brightest thing we have to look forward to in this region is a weekend with temperatures in the 40s, I’m sure I’m not the only one who feels a little envious hearing about this campaign.
