Publicis Groupe’s Fallon, Minneapolis has picked up creative duties for Woodford Reserve, a small but growing super-premium bourbon that has emerged as a star player in Brown-Forman’s liquor portfolio.
“Woodford Reserve has tremendous growth potential moving forward, further building on its track record of strong performance,” Maureen Brekka, SVP Director at Brown-Forman, said in a statement. “We’re excited to have Fallon enter the Brown-Forman fold, and we’re even more excited about the work they’ll be creating to carry the brand into a new phase of its history.”
Boxing Clever, the previous agency-of-record, will remain on board to oversee sales promotion, Brown-Forman spokeswoman Andrea Duvall said in an email. Woodford Reserve has a relatively small ad budget and hasn’t historically devoted spending to broadcast. Last year under $5 million in measured media was spent on the brand, according to Kantar. Asked if that could change under Fallon, Ms. Duvall said: “As the brand continues to grow, we are looking at different mediums including TV, but there are no immediate plans for now.”
On this Friday late afternoon, we don’t want to spare the preamble but here’s what occurred today at Minneapolis-based agency Olson, whose CEO John Partilla (who took over at the beginning of the year) had to say to staff, verbatim. Let it roll.

From the very Canadian, but not Canadien, news bureau: Red Tettemer O’Connell + Partners and Under Armour are launching a youth hockey contest tomorrow, October 12, called “Storm the Centre.” Two teams of skating youngsters will eventually win a chance to play at the Air Canada Centre, home of the Toronto Maple Leafs. I want to spell it center, but it’s for the kids, so I’ll keep it Canadian.
The contest consists of three stages – social media engagement, teamwork, and finally, hockey skills. These sort of pee-wee competitions happen all the time, but adding a social media component is a cool twist from RTO+P, especially in a hockey-crazed country, where presumably, families will claw for the chance to see their kids play on a pro rink. The details of the challenges haven’t been released yet, but you can check team eligibility and sign up here. To all the little Charlie Conways out there, have fun.

Ainda bem.

From Sid Lee NY comes this spot for Dewar’s Whiskey, featuring a hulk of a man who greatly resembles U.K. murderer and mass criminal Charles Bronson, even sporting Bronson’s trademark mustache. Perhaps it’s no coincidence then that director Isaiah Seret seems to borrow a lot of filming technique for this ad from the 2008 biopic Bronson, which starred actor Tom Hardy as the deranged but lovable psychopath.
Of course, it’s hard to advertise your brand of scotch as the choice of crazy violent people, so Sid Lee aims to give their “Drinking Man” character an incongruous tender side. Nothing drives the ladies crazy like a man who routinely pets doves between beating people to death in bare-knuckle boxing matches. While the spot goes very out of its way to portray the character’s tender side, it also discredits his believability. What, the man I’m supposed to admire chases people on bicycles and has a peace tattoo on his chest? It’s this sort of hypocritical hyperbole that made the peace sign/”Born to kill” helmet-wearing protagonist of Full Metal Jacket a walking punchline.
As the sexy lady at the end argues, it’s “the most interesting blends that make for the strongest character.” So remember, if you want to appeal to your local tavern’s supermodel clientele, say one thing but do the other. Credits after the jump.

With AOL’s programmatic “upfronts” behind us, now is a good time to step back and consider how much sense an upfront market for online ads actually makes.
Coca-Cola's NOS Energy Drink takes stupidity to a "hiiire" level in a mind-meltingly over-the-top series of digital clips mocking the marketing tactics used by competitor brands like Monster and Red Bull.
Clocking in a bit under two minutes each, the clips from agency Mistress feature the many failed job interviews of Jordan Treehoefer, an "energy drink marketing stuntbrofessional for hiiire."
Treehoefer is the oafish em-bro-diment of loud, loutish, big-time energy drink promotions, and the videos detail his attempts to get a job hawking NOS, only to fail because the brand is too legit. An overcaffeinated pastiche of John Belushi, Bob Odenkirk and Randy Savage, Treehoefer is like an amped-up grizzly bear with a marketing degree.
This buffoon unloads many choice lines during his mildly NSFW "interviews" at NOS, such as: "Is your mind getting hard? I'm about to blow it;" "People respect you when you blow your wad;" "You've gotta blast your logo all over everyone's faces;" and his oft-repeated mantra, "People are stupid."
Treehoefer's all about staging outrageous stunts to promote NOS (and coincidentally satirize other energy drink brands). While wearing a spacesuit, he pitches a Red Bull-esque Mars expedition, screening animation of an astronaut whose head explodes into dollar bills as he removes his helmet. "Boom! THAT'S how you sell energy drinks!" He's got mad cycle tricks in his repertoire, such as the "McGloryHole3000," "McGrundle720" and his signature move, the "940McWankle," in which he rear-humps the handlebars while flying through the air.
Like the product being advertised, this stuff is an acquiiired taste. Some viewers won't last through 20 seconds of these videos—but they're probably not in the demographic, anyway. The brand's young male target market appears to be responding, with the ads generating more than 1.5 million combined YouTube views since the first clip was posted a month ago. Check them all out after the jump.

The appointment is expected to be announced shortly, said the people, who asked not to be identified because the deliberations are private. Mr. Hopkins, president of distribution for Fox Networks, would succeed Andy Forssell, acting CEO at Hulu.
With Mr. Hopkins, Hulu would gain an executive experienced in negotiating with pay-TV services. The company wants to become an online partner to the industry, giving cable subscribers mobile and online access to programs, and is developing its own shows.

Well, there’s a little bit of doomsaying on the Spy line that needs to be broached. For instance, we received several tips about layoffs at DDB New York. What we’ve been told, from sources in the know, is that there were just a handful let go from the office. No word as to why, but while we’re on the Omnicom tip, let us tell you the layoffs that some were referring to at Austin-based GSD&M actually involved “A small reorganization involving two people..” Hope that helps for now.
