Electronic Arts’ popular Battlefield game has been named the top social brand in 2013 by Social Brands 100. Director of communities, Simon Stokes, reveals how the brand got to the top.
Consider this your odds and sods image of the day. Louisville-based digital agency Oohology threw a party to honor its launch of a new sorbet for client, Comfy Cow. What this has to do with body art is another story, but as someone who is fairly inked, it’s not such a bad incentive to get free tattoos for attending the usual agency soiree. Not sure if they did sleeve art, but here’s the full array of images from Oohology’s throwdown. Maybe we’ll consider this for the next AgencySpy party. Louisville Biz-Journal has more blanks to fill in, peep it here.
Wim Wenders, the president of the European Film Academy, and Oscar-winning cinematographer Anthony Dod Mantle film this beautifully shot portrayal of “the simple life”.

Did you know that 75% of the companies do not optimize email for mobiles yet? With 43% of the people now reading and responding emails through mobiles — a figure that is expected to hit 50% in 2013 — coupled with the fact 97% of the people view emails once, it becomes clear marketers should design emails to render properly on mobile devices.
Check out this infographic that’s packed with charts and graphs that share how mobile is permeating the email experience.
Kmart’s “Ship My Pants” campaign was a huge viral success, so the retailer’s attempting to capitalize on the buzz with the release of another video ad.
We’ve received confirmation that JWT New York has brought in Bajibot alum Jeffrey Castellano, who specializes in artificial intelligence and works on facial recognition technology, as its creative technology director. No word if this is a newly created position or if Castellano is replacing anyone as of yet, but we’ll let you know. Anyhow, Castellano’s new role at JWT NY calls for him to oversee emerging technology projects as well as digital studio output from its Big Apple hub.
Along with his 15 months as director of creative technology at Bajibot Media, Castellano has worked with a variety of brands during his career including Pepsi, Tommy Hilfiger, Armani, Chanel, Gap, Banana Republic, J.Crew, GE, Exxon, Budweiser, Coach, Louis Vuitton, State Farm, Foot Locker, Kraft and Victoria’s Secret.
Nielsen has partnered with IBM to put its Watson technology to work for advertisers. IBM will make the data-parsing system which famously outwitted "Jeopardy!" champions in 2011 available to companies for CRM, customer call centers and other purposes through its new Watson Engagement Advisor offering. Over the next several months Nielsen aims to apply the Watson technology to improve measurement of ad effectiveness and media planning.
"There's lots of information and data in the public domain that the average practitioner … typically isn't taking advantage of and Watson would use all of this information to come up with the best possible answer," said Randall Beard, global head, Advertiser Solutions at Nielsen.
A 26-year-old media planner….asks questions like, 'Who are my best prospects in the telecom category?' and 'How much should I budget for next year,'" said Mr. Beard. Using Watson, that media planner could tap into data she might normally ignore.

The company encouraging marketers and publishers to use SnapTag QR codes says it didn't infringe any patents in developing the system, but it faced a patent lawsuit last year all the same and settled in December. So what does growing patent litigation mean to the marketing world? Brian Heidelberger gives his view.
Kmart's "Ship My Pants" ad was a major success, to the tune of 17 million YouTube views and counting. But can Draftfcb turn almost-profanity into a running gag for the retailer? It attempts to do so with this follow-up spot, "Big Gas Savings," which features some big-gas humor indeed. It even features the same family from "Ship My Pants," and once again the kid gets the best line. (In the earlier spot, he blurted out, "I can't wait to ship my pants, Dad." Here, he shouts, "Dad, look at that big gas truck!") It's not quite as funny as the original, perhaps, but it seems destined to get similarly big-gas numbers on YouTube. And if nothing else, the #biggassavings hashtag clinches it. Credits below.

Now that the dust has settled around the overplayed Windows smartphone wedding commercial directed by Roman Coppola, there’s a void in Windows-bashing-Apple negative campaign ad territory. Well, with some help from CP+B, the brand is back to tackle a new comparative subject: tablets.
There are actually two new spots, first covered over at Mashable, both taking not-so-subtle digs at iPad products. The spot above even goes as far as to use Siri against Apple – in short, iPads can’t do as much as Windows 8 tablets. But you can play chopsticks on an iPad for whatever that’s worth. And if you watch the commercial, it’s apparently not worth much. You have to respect the brash stance Windows is taking here. They are clearly playing catch-up in the publicity game, and going after Apple in such a direct fashion could be the right way to make up the distance. And the best part is, since both companies are so rich, suing each other over copyright infringement and/or libel won’t even make a difference. Ding, ding. Time for the next round to begin. You can watch the more informational attack ad after the jump.
French tennis star Jo-Wilfried Tsonga is preparing to play against a robot. Surprisingly, it's not Roger Federer, renowned for his robotically stiff commercial acting and machine-like winning ways (including those 17 Grand Slam singles titles). Today at 11 a.m. ET, at a practice session for the French Open, Tsonga will take on an actual automaton, which will try to hit shots past the world's eighth-ranked player based on tweets supplied by fans as part of a promotion for banking giant BNP Paribas (and agency We Are Social).
Fans visiting the Tweet & Shoot site can log in with Twitter and drag and drop tennis-ball icons to set up virtual shots, which are then encoded as hashtagged tweets which the on-court bionic Borg will decipher—and then spit out a real ball for Tsonga to hit. Users are also encouraged to include messages of encouragement to Jo-Wilfried, who has never won a Grand Slam event. Forty fans chosen by BNP's social communities are guaranteed to have their shots included at Tsonga's session with the robot. The rest will be picked at random from among the tweets. Folks with no lives whatsoever can check out Tweet & Shoot's streaming coverage of the event at the link above. Maybe the bot will blow a fuse, leap over the net and swat Tsonga like a fly.
