Burger King to America: ‘Why Just Have It Your Way?’

Earlier this year, the home of the Whopper slapped the advertising world with one of its own by parting ways with lead agency Mother. It was a public divorce attributed to the all-too-familiar “creative differences.”

Now something else is grilling: Burger King just announced that it has found a new home for its 40-year-slogan in the tagline cemetery. The new line is “Be your way,” because nothing could be more personal than ordering a No. 2 with a large carbonated beverage.

Witness the strategery in action after the jump.

Has This Creepy Guy From Mother New York Been Stalking Your LinkedIn Profile?

Have you noticed a man named Donald Buscando looking at your LinkedIn profile?

You'd remember him. He's wearing a beige turtleneck that somehow accentuates his eerily white teeth and his hair, which is reminiscent of Robert Cornelius (you know, the guy that took the alleged first selfie ever).

Well, it seems Buscando is a faux executive—part of a tongue-in-cheek effort by Mother New York to recruit interns for its summer program. Mother is identifying potential interns and having "Donald" stalk them on LinkedIn, which is easier than ever thanks to the site's newly souped-up "Who's viewed your profile?" section.

Mother explains Donald's approach this way: "Using the advanced search feature of LinkedIn, he sources the profiles of the best students in the world by filtering by school, specialty and using power keywords like 'Alpha' and 'Pintegrated.' Based on these criteria, Donald identifies the best students and clicks on their profiles over and over again."

Donald's own LinkedIn page is treasure trove of odd, too. He writes:

I spent a few hours on your profile looking deep into the soul of your business-related online identity. From what I saw, you should apply.

Are you a copywriter or art director? I've closely examined your portfolios and you should apply.

Are you a designer? You have beautiful bezier curves. You should apply.

Are you a strategist looking deep into what makes people tick? Yes. You should apply, too.

Do you want to work in the shop? Don't know what that is? Sounds like you should apply.

Are you a producer who makes things happen? I've seen your profile and yes you are. Yes, apply.

There also the video below. You can go to mothernewyork.com/opportunity to apply.

"Tonally this is nothing unusual for us," Mother founding partner Paul Malmstrom tells AdFreak. "We thought it'd be a fun way of learning about the program and give a sense of what it's like to work here."

Chipotle Really Goes Back to the Start in Its First U.K. Ad Campaign

Mother London has cooked up Chipotle's first British campaign with print ads and posters that explain how to pronounce the burrito chain's name. "Chi-Pole-Tay," "Chi-Pottle" and "Shi-Pot-Lay" are wrong. (Now they tell me. All those wasted years.) "Chi-Poat-Lay" is correct. Thanks, Chipotle!

"Delicious however you say it" is the tagline. Hey, thanks again! Cue "Farmed and Dangerous." Crank up Willie Nelson. Now, Brits can rest assured they've got the name right and savor that addictive, gut-grinding Chi-Poat-Lay bliss as the sun sinks yet lower on their once-mighty empire.

Mother London Makes Its Own ‘First Kiss’ Parody … With Dogs

The parodies of fashion brand Wren's super-viral "First Kiss" ad keep flowing in. Here's ad agency Mother London's entry—"First Sniff," starring a bunch of dogs.

Stranger dogs tend to get pretty intimate pretty quickly, and so all the hesitancy in the first half the video, I suppose, is the joke here. Before long, though, there are plenty of noses in butts and all is right with the world again.

The original "First Kiss" video, by the way, has topped 40 million views since Monday.

Small Agency’s Devious Recruiting Ads Invite You to Apply to Droga500 and MMMMother

Droga5 is great and all, but it stands to reason, mathematically, that Droga500 would be one hundred times as awesome.

Nail, a small agency in Providence, R.I., invokes the hallowed names of Droga, Mother and Goodby, Silverstein & Partners in a series of cheeky new recruitment ads that acknowledge the greatness of those agencies—and then invite you to apply to better versions of them.

Three job ads posted on Google+ include links to droga500.com, mmmmother.com (the "tastier" version of Mother) and goodbysilverstien.com, each of which links through to Nail's site, where you can either apply for a job there (or if you're an "angry attorney," connect with a guy named Jeremy, who can hopefully talk you down).

Says the agency: "We are a small creative shop that competes for talent with big, famous creative shops. So we figured if we can't inspire young creatives to apply for a job here, at least we might be able to confuse them into it.?"

Ikea Lights Up a Forest in Gorgeous Ad Celebrating Move to Energy-Efficient Bulbs

Ikea planted lots of LED lamps in the woods for this 60-second commercial for the U.K. and Ireland touting the home-furnishing company's commitment to sustainability.

Created by Mother London and director Martin Krejci, the ad's surreal aura is enhanced by Menomena's pop-etheral "Wet and Rusting" on the soundtrack. (Soundtree Music found the song.) Check out Mr. Squirrel's reaction as the lights blaze. Yeah, he's screwed—every predator can spot him now.

"Forest" is part of Ikea's "Wonderful Everyday" campaign, which focuses on how small things can make a big difference. A voiceover notes that by 2016, Ikea will sell only energy-efficient LED lightbulbs. (Indeed, the European Union has been moving in this direction for some time.)

The work provides "an opportunity to explain a little about who we are and what we stand for as a brand, and sustainability is a big part of this," says Ikea marketing manager Peter Wright.

Some bright lights might point out that the ad displays enough timber to sustain hundreds of impossible-to-assemble dinette sets. (The company reportedly uses 1 percent of the world's wood supply each year.) But in fairness, Ikea has been working to meet ecologically prudent logging standards. So it's not like the company can't see the forest for the trees.

Here’s a Brief Statement from Mother Regarding BK Loss

Mary-J.-Blige-for-Burger-King

Well, the relationship fairly briefly, but as you may heard, Burger King has parted ways with Mother New York. You might remember that said agency joined BK’s roster and became the fast-food chain’s lead agency in early 2013, in the process coming up with ads like the Mary J. Blige-starring spot that drew somewhat agreeable comments from Translation chief Steve Stoute and was also lampooned by Second City. Anyhow, here’s your succinct statement that was just sent to us from the agency:

“We were optimists going into the relationship and after a substantial test ride, it did not work out. We wish our friends at Burger King all the best.”

Veteran Mother Trio Splits for Austin to Start New Venture

mother3

Just a month after losing longtime creative Piers North to Spring Studios, Mother is watching three more veteran staffers move  on as creative director, Rob Baird, Mother & former director of new business Krystle Loyland, and co-head of strategy Seth Gaffney are heading to Austin start up their own operation. In a statement regarding the departing trio, Mother NY founding partner, Andrew Dietchman, says,  “Rob, Krystle, and Seth have made huge contributions over the years. That we’ve repaid their commitment to Mother by helping them arrive at a place where they have the confidence and skills to venture off on their own is a point of enormous pride for me and my partners.  They will forever be part of our family and we’ll always support them in any way can.”

Baird had two stints at Mother during his career, rejoining the agency from TBWA\Chiat\Day NY in summer 2010 to lead creative on Dell, Stella Artois and Coca-Cola among others. As for Loyland, the exec spent six-and-a-half years at the agency, working with clients including Tanquery/Diageo and Google while Gaffney joined in his role at Mother in 2010 after serving on the account/strategy side at the likes of W+K  and Deutsch. We’ve been told the trio’s new venture will be announced soon and will open in early 2014.

Mother, Anomaly Alums Head to TBWA\Chiat\Day NY

holmdahltbwaA little bit of staffing news for you this afternoon as TBWA\Chiat\Day NY has added to its creative department by welcoming Mother alums Erik Holmdahl and Beth Ryan, art director and copywriter, respectively, to the fold as CDs. The pair spent the last year, give or take, at Mother helping lead creative for Stella and Microsoft but spent the majority of their careers at BBH, with both working for over a half-decade at the latter agency on campaigns for the likes of Sprite, Axe and Google. Prior to BBH, Holmdahl worked at StrawberryFrog for a few years while Ryan put in the same amount of time at DDB Seattle.

The pair’s new boss and former BBH colleague, Matt Ian, who joined up with TBWA\C\D NY as creative chief from Deutsch LA this past summer, speaks highly (obviously) of the new hires, saying in a statement, “We hear the term ‘hybrid creative’ thrown around a lot, but I haven’t met too many who are genuinely ambidextrous. When I worked with them at BBH, I quickly came to realize that Beth and Erik are as strong digitally as they are with the traditional work. They think simply and inventively. They can give you an innovative idea for an app or a digital platform, and then turn around and hit a home run with a TV script.”

Along with the new CDs, Chiat NY has also brought on former Anomaly Toronto director of design Melatan Riden in a similar role as design director.

Piers North Parts Ways with Mother

piersnorthWhile there may have been a little confusion over names on the Spy line last night, we’ve cleared it up and have received word from sources familiar with the matter that is indeed Piers North who has left Mother New York. North spent just over a decade at the agency’s London and NY offices as a creative, specifically serving as an art director for clients including Crunch Fitness, K-Y and 10 Cane.

There’s no confirmation on this as of yet, but we’re hearing that North, who’s also an avid cyclist and perhaps fashionista, has left Mother NY for a gig downtown at production company, Spring Studios. We’re still waiting to hear back from Spring, which has worked with Target and Harper’s Bazaar and is opening up a new space in Tribeca in, yes, spring 2014. We’ll keep you posted.

3 Ad Agencies Try to Rebrand Feminism. Did Any of Them Get It Right?

Does feminism need rebranding? Elle U.K. thinks so, and invited three British ad agencies—Brave, Mother and Wieden + Kennedy—to work on it with three feminist groups.

The results, published in November's issue, are posted below. Brave, working with teenage campaigner Jinan Younis, produced a flow chart called "Are You a Feminist?" Mother, working with the newly launched Feminist Times, created an ad focused on equal pay. And W+K, teamed up with online magazine Vagenda, produced an ad about stereotypes that women have to deal with.

See the work below. Does any of it scratch the surface of the issue?

Virgin Mobile Makes Its Pitch in 25 YouTube Videos, Which You Scroll Through by Blinking

Virgin Mobile has been retraining your brain for a while. Now, it wants to borrow your eyes.

In a fun stunt called BlinkWashing from Mother New York and rehabstudio, the mobile carrier makes its sales pitch in 25 separate but linked YouTube videos—which you control simply by blinking. (The site uses your webcam to find your eyes, and then accurately detect your blinks.) The best part is, all the videos are time-coded and "smart cached," so that when you blink, the next video's dialogue picks up where the previous one left off. In other words, blink and you won't miss it.

The videos themselves offer an impressive assortment of oddball characters and scenes. There are even Mother employees featured in the spots: Gabriel Blido, sporting his astounding mustache, and Debra Dean, who shows off her hip-hop dancing skills.

Give it a spin over at Virgin Mobile's YouTube page.
