AOL’s Platform-A shows off its new logo

Platforma
Some may argue it should be bigger, but AOL’s ad-network unit Platform-A has a new logo. Isn’t it shiny and futuristic? Personally, if I were AOL, I might not have chosen a toppled letter, but what do I know? Platform-A chief Lynda Clarizio says it “effectively communicates our distinct competitive advantage of scale and reach. And its bold and simple design fits with our mission of providing advertisers and publishers with effective, impactful and easy-to-use solutions to their digital advertising needs.” I can see that, impactful solutions. Also, it doesn’t look obscene when rotated 90 degrees, which is a plus. Perhaps the Privacy Penguin will be the mascot, putting a friendly face on the targeted Web advertising the unit promises. Now, perhaps AOL should turn to the name. Platform-A, with its strange hyphen nobody uses, always struck me as a placeholder because AOL couldn’t think of what to call it. Any ideas on what they could rename it?

An end to the “Madden Curse?”

Brett Favre looks to break the Madden Curse as it was announced yesterday that he would be on the cover of Electronic Arts’ 20th Anniversary Edition of John Madden Football.

Seeing as Favre no longer is in the league, it’s safe to say either:
a) Favre will get back in the league only to suffer an injury
b) He should look to the skies for random falling pianos

The obvious question is– will there be weepy press conferences as an option?

Am I the only one who remembers Madden’s commercials for Miller Lite?

Binge drinking can lead to flying children

This anti-binge-drinking ad from New Zealand is pretty heavy in its portrayal of excessive boozing and passive-aggressive friendship. Why does everyone at the party let the crazy diamond shine on? Couldn’t someone say, “Hey man, you’ve been drinking since you got here, maybe don’t swing your kid around inside the house?” It’s not like they didn’t know what condition he was in, given how he was drunk-hugging everyone in sight. Maybe they could add to the tagline: “Also, your friends are total wusscakes.” Via Spare Room.

Belgium discovers Mentos/Diet Coke thing

Mentoscoke America could learn from countries where citizens gather in large numbers for reasons that aren’t depressing, annoying or violent. Take Belgium, where some 1,500 students recently all dropped Mentos into bottles of Diet Coke so they would explode all at once. Yes, they’re about two years late on this stunt, but now they have a world record to tell their grandchildren about. The next time people here march on Washington, they’d better be carrying toasters and Pop Tarts.
