Ted Baker London Teams Up With HUSH to Promote Autumn/Winter Collection With Humor

Ted Baker London has collaborated with New York agency HUSH to launch StreetWinker.com, which punily asks visitors to “Spread the Ted” with a “Baker’s dozen” (the last we checked a baker’s dozen didn’t equal five, but whatever) of video shorts, digital “winks,” “Teditorials” and “Fashion Art” (or fart for short) in an effort to promote their autumn/winter collection. (Update: we were told by Ted Baker’s PR folks that they’re adding 8 more shorts before the end of the campaign. Sorry for getting all snarky there.)

Ted Baker London worked with Gavin McInnes (co-founder of Vice and Rooster) to craft the sardonic Redge Blaker persona featured on the site. Brand Communication Director at Ted Baker London Craig Smith commented, “Through channeling Redge Blaker, we have created enjoyable content that is genuinely laugh out loud funny, stylish and still very consistent with our brand messaging.” He elaborated that audiences want to share “something authentic” and for that reason much of the content is kept unbranded. The sites’ disparate content is all unified by a very British kind of irreverent humor.

The featured video short shows Blaker giving a bloke advice on how to stay cool around the ladies. “They’ll know if you’re over-eager or faking it,” he warns. When a cute bird (that’s British for “girl”) walks by, though, Baker’s advice goes out the window. You kind of have to see his reaction to get it, so I won’t give it away here: just watch the video above for yourself. We’ve included a few more of the shorts after the jump as well. Enjoy.  continued…

Dodge Durango Partners with Ron Burgundy, Because Everyone Loves Ron Burgundy

Dodge and Paramount have joined forces in a co-branded campaign from W+K launching the new 2014 Dodge Durango featuring Ron Burgundy (of Anchorman and the upcoming Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues, but you already knew that).

The campaign, which spans television, print, digital and social media, debuted October 5th online and on television. Be prepared to see it everywhere.

“With the personal involvement of Will Ferrell, our writer / director Adam McKay, the comedy team at Funny or Die, and the Dodge creative team at Wieden+Kennedy, we were able to create a truly epic partnership,” says CMO of Paramount Picture Josh Greenstein in a statement. But are the spots actually funny? Some of them — they really very widely in quality. Each of the spots takes advantage of the 70s aesthetic in the Anchorman films, taking place in a colorful, very 70s auto showroom. The first spot, “Horsepower” is a bit of a letdown. It resurrects the tired “comparing horse power to an actual horse” theme commonly used in spots for powerful vehicles.

The staring contest with the horse at the end is almost worth a chuckle though. “Glove Compartment” is a lot better: it features Ron Burgundy toting the Durango’s glove compartment, which can hold “two turkey sandwiches or seventy packs of gum.” Another spot finds Burgundy struggling with a script that touts the Durango’s “m.p.g.” performance. The highlight is definitely “Ballroom Dancers,” featured above, which has a comically angry showdown between Burgundy and dancers that he thinks may “live in the rafters.” A lot of this is stuff that only Ferrell could get away with delivering, and only about half of the time is the writing worthy of his talent, but when it works it works. Plus, it will whet people’s appetites for the Anchorman sequel, which is kind of the point.

Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues debuts in theaters December 20th. Credits and additional video after the jump.  continued…

NABS Vintage Intern Auction Could Be Auctioning Off Your Nightmare Boss

If you’ve ever had a nightmare boss in advertising, Zulu Alpha Kilo’s latest spot for NABS Vintage Intern Auction should appeal to you.

The NABS Vintage Intern Auction auctions off “twelve notable executives and thought leaders,” to be used as interns for a day, for the Canadian charitable group NABS, who provide assistance for people in communications and related industries who need help due to illness, injury, unemployment or financial difficulties. Winning bidders can assign their interns to do anything from giving a speech or holding a seminar to cleaning up the kitchen or getting coffee.

The spot highlights the revenge aspect of the auction, with bidders attempting to win the right to boss around a truly awful Chief Creative Officer. At the center of the spot is the eventual winning bidder, a man  with an eye patch who the CCO told, “If you can work from home, you can work from Intensive Care.” He outbids the woman the CCO called “Sarah in bed and then said ‘I’m so sorry, Diane,’ which isn’t [her] name either.” I don’t know what kind of work he has for the CCO, but it won’t be pretty. Perhaps cleaning the bathroom floor with a toothbrush?

As you can tell from the synopsis, Zulu Alpha Kilo isn’t afraid to push the boundaries a little bit with some risque humor, and the result is a spot that is actually funny. We’re guessing that since it’s for a good cause, no one will be offended. No CCOs were harmed in the making of this video. At least not any that didn’t deserve it.

Here’s the full list of the “interns” up for bids, in case your boss from hell is one of them:

Claude Carrier – President, DentsuBos

Mary Maddever – VP & Editorial Director, Brunico Publishing

Brent Choi – Chief Creative & Integration Officer – JWT

Lance Martin – Partner & Executive Creative Director, Union Creative

David Crichton – Partner, Creative Director, Grip Limited

Ian MacKellar – Chief Creative Officer, Ogilvy

Simon Jennings – President, Gesca

Angus Tucker – Partner, Co-Creative Director, John Street

Mitch Joel – Author and President, Twist Image

Kenneth Wong – Distinguished Professor of Marketing, Queen’s School of Business

Amber Mac – President, co-founder, Konnekt; and co-host of App Central

Christina Yu – Executive Vice President, Creative Director, Red Urban

Gordon & Taylor Get CDW to Build Technologically Advanced Stadium, Forget to Hire Team

Ogilvy Chicago’s latest spot in their “People Who Get It” campaign for CDW features Charles Barkley, Doug Flutie, and a technologically advanced stadium without a team.

In the spot, Jim Gordon takes you on a tour of Gordon and Taylor stadium, a domed football stadium he touts as “the most technologically advanced stadium in the world,” thanks to CDW. Features include “3,000 screens, stadium-wide wi-fi, seamless POS systems and a cloud infrastructure solution.” The funniest moment of the spot comes right after this list of features. “Do I know what those are? Not exactly,” Gordon admits. “But they sound impressive.” This should hit home with a lot of people who fall a good deal short of IT expert, myself included.

Over the course of the spot it’s revealed that Gordon has the perfect stadium, a half-time show, cheerleaders, a mascot, Charles Barkley and Doug Flutie on board — basically everything he needs, except a team. He seems to get more and more panicked about this as the spot goes on. Looks like Flutie may have to QB himself. The spot is fun and lighthearted, although I wish Barkley had more lines as he has a good comic presence. I wouldn’t be too surprised to see a follow-up spot

Wingmanning: When PDA Gets Awkward

winningman

Wingmanning is a Tumblr dedicated to photos, taken by Scott Cleveland, of Drew Phillips, planner at TBWA\Chiat\Day LA, standing next to couples who are making out or otherwise engaging in PDA. Their slogan/mission statement: “Make out in public? We’re behind you.” The page also includes user-submitted “Amateur Wingmanning” from fans of the sites’ photo cringe comedy who snapped their own shots of themselves standing next to lip wrestling couples.

The whole thing is so cringe-inducing it’s almost like you’re there feeling socially awkward yourself! Just look at these photos and try not to feel uncomfortable. Trust us, you can’t do it.

MUH-TAY-ZIK I HOF-FER Busts Out the Black Humor for Do.com

There are some rare death jokes on display in “17 Minutes,” the new longform Do.com ad, almost an FX brand of humor, not something you’d normally associate with a to-do-list website. An old man in a nursing home rushes to set up a farewell party after an oblivious doctor tells him he has 17 minutes to live. The man uses the collaborative features on the website to contact his friends and get the necessary party paraphernalia  It’s edgy, mildly offensive, and pretty funny. There’s also a pregnancy joke that is way too good for a commercial. There were probably safer ways to get the Do.com message across to viewers, but we always appreciate creatives who take risks. Credits after the jump.

In Case You Missed It: The ‘Satisfries’ Weekend Invasion

wtff1

By now, you’re probably well aware of Burger King’s new lo-cal “Satisfries” and perhaps have even seen Mother’s spot that promotes the fast-food chain’s launch of its newest product. Well, what we happened to miss this past weekend during our hibernation was the teaser social/experiential portion of the event dubbed #WTFF, which not only involved Mother but also Big Fuel (where have ya been?), who dropped giant, 8-foot (steal-able) fries in NYC, LA and Chicago.

wtff3

Subsequently, the fries were photographed by pedestrians as well as hand-picked “Instagram influencers,” who posted their images here as well as on a Tumblr site. It wasn’t until the official launch of Satisfries that Burger King officially acknowledged the project dubbed #WTFF.  The parties involved even managed to photobomb the Today show (above) earlier this week, so what the hell, we decided to regale for a minute in a neat project touting something we’ll probably never consume anyways. We just wish we had one of those large-size fake fries to take home, though.

ASO Returns with Second Installment of Parody Series, ‘The Merger’

We actually had no idea this was being turned into a series of sorts, but since we’ve already broached the topic today, why not keep the party going. A month after Atlanta-based agency Ames Scullin O’Hare unveiled its short parody film, “The Merger,” which of course happened to take aim at you know what, the agency returns with part two. In the second installment, we jump ahead four months post-merger of fictitious agency network, Uniglobal Advercom, and see how an agency-client relationship has evolved (or devolved in this case). Obviously, subtlety has no place in ASO expressing their thoughts on the actual Omnicom-Publicis merger. But hey, we don’t really mind when the frustrated little guy wants to throw a few stones and take the piss.

ASO managing partner/creative Patrick Scullin says, “We want to show how this “Bigger is Better’ relationship withers, and we suspect this scene will be played in many corporate offices in the  upcoming months. This ad agency network merger is going to entail a lot of growing pains and we’ll be there to document it and offer a better solution.” We’ll see what that solution is when the time comes, but in the meantime, you can expect at least one more installment in this series. Hooray?

Adobe Will Not Use Babies to Increase Web Traffic

The latest Adobe Systems spot, from Goodby, Silverstein and Partners, brings up a valid issue: companies that rely on digital marketing may not understand if their ad tactics are working properly. Traffic, as we all know, can be misleading. But Abode won’t mislead. They’ll presumably cut through the smoke and tell a company how to effectively increase exposure. At least, that’s what one is led to believe after watching “Click, Baby, Click.”

The one-minute spot is enjoyable enough. There’s some frenetic action, frenetic music, and an easy punchline at the end. That formula generally works, and any viewer with three ounces of common sense understands the commercial is a flashy exaggeration. But, part of me would like to see at least a hint of what Adobe Marketing Cloud can do for a business rather than focusing on what it won’t do. Still, we’ve seen much worse.

Beer Plumbing from Saatchi and Saatchi Fulfills Alcoholic Fantasies

Funny prank, or the ultimate gift?

For Saatchi and Saatchi’s latest campaign for DB Breweries, the agency pranked a friend named Russ by plumbing his house with beer.

Following their plumbing hack, every tap in the house flows with cold beer, fulfilling every alcoholic frat boy’s wet dream. (It is unclear if the toilet is also tapped with beer.) They then set up cameras around the house to capture the reactions of their friend and his significant other. Russ is initially flummoxed by the brown liquid flowing through the tap (usually when that happens it’s time to call a plumber); after smelling and then tasting the beer he delightedly pours himself a glass and decides, “That actually tastes really good.” His wife/girlfriend, on the other hand, seems significantly less amused, presumably with concerns of when water will once again flow through the taps. The spot concludes with Russ climbing under his house, to find the kegs tapped to his plumbing. At this point the prank crew jumps out of hiding, and, predictably, everyone enjoys a good brew.

Since launch last week, the spot has gone viral on YouTube, with the full-length version (watch at your lunchtime leisure above) already racking up over three-million views. There’s also a :90 version, with :60 and :15 TVCS to follow as well as social media support, billboards, etc., etc.

Should Saatchi wish to duplicate this experiment in the States, I would be more than happy to volunteer my apartment. Let’s make this happen guys.

Ignited’s Coolest Employee Lives, Breathes, Eats Denim

I’m not sure if Cool Jesse actually eats denim, but after you watch the latest three-minute side project from LA-based Ignited, you’ll see that it is a serious question. Ignited has a history of playing around with characters, like Deadpool, for instance, and while Cool Jesse may not be a Marvel superhero, he knows how to get denim out of printers. Who is Cool Jesse, you ask? He’s a fictitious employee who stands around the office not doing any work. He looks like the guy you know who wants to look like a Gap model. He’s probably a compilation of Ignited inside jokes, and he’s also an excuse to talk about how big the desks are at the Ignited offices. Seriously, those are some big workspaces. I’m envious, and not because I avoid denim. Credits after the jump.

Winners, john st. Turn Quebec Into a Giant Scavenger Hunt

If you live in Quebec and happen to see giant pieces of women’s clothing and accessories, do not be alarmed. Rather, be intrigued. Toronto shop john st. – creators of the Lake Huron “Save the Drop” campaign, among many others – has teamed with Winners, the Canadian version of Marshall’s, for an immense scavenger hunt across Quebec called “Find Big, Score Big.” Shoppers who find seven-foot-tall high heels will be happy to know they are not involved in a bad post-modern art show. And more importantly, the first three shoppers to come across each installment will win designer items worth up to $1,000. The next 25 shoppers will receive $25 gift cards. I’m tempted to say we’re all winners, but we’re not.

For those interested scavengers who don’t want to drive around Quebec aimlessly, you can find clues on the Winners Facebook page, which from a brand marketing standpoint, is a savvy way to drive up social media engagement in both the short- and long-term. Users will be more inclined to periodically check the pages to see if similar giveaways are taking place, and the costs to serve a local audience like this are relatively minimal. The contest lasts until September 24, and you can look at additional photos from the campaign after the jump.

ESPN Anchors Envy Rafa Nadal’s Swag in Latest Spot

Love it or hate it, Sportscenter has always been good at maintaining a certain tone across its ad campaigns. They’ve been running with the “star athletes in the ESPN office” schtick for what seems like forever, and it seems to be an infinitely adaptable formula. The latest in this long line of ads is the new 30-second spot “Candy Dish,” from Wieden + Kennedy New York, featuring U.S. Open champion Rafael Nadal, fresh off his defeat of Novak Djokovic last night.

In the spot, Sportscenter host John Anderson and ESPNNews anchor Bram Weinstein wonder what makes Nadal so popular in the ESPN office (especially with the ladies). Is it his good looks? His tan? His accent? Or could it be that U.S. Open trophy he’s using as a candy dish? If you ask me, I think it’s the sweatband. Who doesn’t love a good sweatband?

This is the second This is Sportscenter spot to be released in both English and Spanish, following the clever Robinson Cano “Handshakes” spot. The Spanish-language version swaps out Anderson and Weinstein for ESPN Deportes anchors Alvaro Morales, Jorge Eduardo Sánchez and Carolina Padrón. Personally, I prefer the Spanish version (featured below). Because, well, everything sounds better in Spanish.

The Onion, Lenovo Lampoon Fantasy Football Bros in ‘Tough Season’

“For some people, fantasy football feels real. For others it is real.” So claims Tough Season, The Onion’s new fantasy football series, developed in cooperation with DigitasLBI and Lenovo. Most of us, I think, know someone for whom this is true. Someone who loses sleep over the draft, and talks about NFL players as “my guys.” Someone like Tough Season’s Brad Blevins. Brad takes fantasy football way too seriously, despite the fact that his team, Brad’s Awesome Team, never wins his league. But he’s convinced, of course, that this season will be different.

Brad’s creepy rival Harris is focused on humiliating him, but Brad is intent on avoiding “The Watermelon Dance” (You really have to watch to see this one, I won’t give it away) at all costs. As the owner of three consecutive championships, Huge Giant Robots is the team to beat, with their mysterious owner Mr. Z. keeping his identity a secret. Episode one of the show flashed back to last season, with Brad’s tearful goodbye to Matt Forte and end-of-season humiliation. Episode two focuses on the draft.

Kit Kat 4.4 Pokes Fun at Apple Advertising (Of Course)

Following Google’s announcement Tuesday that the upcoming 4.4 version of Android will be named after its new partner Kit Kat, Nestle and JWT have launched a new advertisement on YouTube for the Kit Kat 4.4, with tongue planted firmly in cheek.

The ad pokes fun at Apple’s self-serious style of advertisement, with “Chief Breaks Officer” Chris Catlin doing a pretty spot-on imitation of Apple designer Jony Ive’s accent and dramatic speaking style, while bragging of the Kit Kat 4.4’s features. These include “adjustable orientation,” “global coverage,” and compatibility “with all liquid accessories.” The tagline? A rhyming riff on Apple: “There’s a Kit Kat for that.”

Kit Kat’s website and social media sites have also been revamped to make the Kit Kat appear like a smartphone. The site is broken into categories including, “Hardware,” “Features,” “Accessories” and “Tech Spec” where you can read about Kit Kat’s “praline software, crisp waferware, and …unique chocolate unibody.”

Mmm…unique chocolate unibody. Confectionary perfectionary indeed.

JWT also designed the packaging on over 50 million specially branded Kit Kat bars in 19 international markets, including the UK, Australia, Brazil, Germany and Japan. The packs will lead consumers to android.com/kitkat, where they have the chance to win Google Nexus 7 tablets, credits to spend in Google Play, and other prizes. JWT has also created local campaigns across TV, outdoor, ambient, retail activation and experiential to run in these 19 international markets. The Kit Kat branding marks the first time Android’s operating system has launched under a brand name.  continued…

NFL Season: Another Reason for Old Spice to Do Old Spice Things

There’s a very fine line between stupid funny and annoying, a line that Old Spice is willing to tightrope for miles and miles. Their “Unnecessary Freshness” campaign, created by W+K Portland, will hit screens starting Thursday night for the season opener. As you might expect, there will be plenty of shenanigans that don’t make sense. But, at least that’s the point.

Three new spots starring Denver Broncos wide receiver Wes Welker might make you shake your head, laugh, or both (there’s also a fourth spot featuring New England Patriots linebacker Jerod Mayo, possibly a pity commercial since Welker darted for Denver). However, since each ad is less than 20 seconds, it’s easy to stomach the goofy jokes and images of lizards eating Welker’s legs. If commenters take to the site to rip W+K, Welker, football, me, AgencySpy itself, or a number of other things that exist, and therefore, should be ridiculed incessantly, they can hopefully agree that the running time is a plus. And, if you believe that a majority of people in America are stupid and these spots are stupid funny, then maybe W+K is onto something brilliant. Maybe.

Credits and some more unnecessary freshness after the jump.

Recent College Grad Launches Creative Director Self-Help Site

Would a Creative Director take advice from anyone, regardless of the source? What if that source is a recent UNC grad offering up satirical tips about the industry in exchange for a chance to work? Well, if you’re a CD looking to fill an open position, you might want to check out creativedirectorselfhelp.com.

The website comes from Jared Wicker, a young, nomadic copywriter looking to lose “nomadic” from his unofficial bio. We covered another of Wicker’s side projects – “Dining with Dems” – last September, when he was interning with BooneOakley. While his old site was more of a specific flavor of the week, the new site is essentially a long resume full of images, memes, and clever text. We’ve seen these types of self-promotional ventures before, some good, some boring. Wicker’s work finds a way to stand out with novelty ideas like Rapid Feedback Cards. He may not be the guy who modeled his resume after an Amazon Product Page, which is still number one in my book, but the effort shows. Give it a view, and help out a nomad.

Stephen Curry Bests James Harden with Soulful Diss Track for Foot Locker

Here’s an update on the James Harden/Stephen Curry commercial-pretending-to-be-a-music-video we covered last week: while Harden may have uncorked his vocal cords first, Curry is back with an unsavory r&b diss track that has more blues than rhythm. Foot Locker and BBDO New York seem to be having some fun with this one, right down to the purposefully low-budget video effects. I’m not sure whose voice is worse, but both of them are really, really bad singers, and that makes this campaign all the better. A little tea with honey for next time, guys? Anyway, grab some earplugs and listen up.

Activision, 72andSunny Tap CollegeHumor Duo for ‘Call of Duty: Ghosts’ Trailer

In this Call of Duty: Ghosts trailer, Jake and Amir from CollegeHumor give us a preview of the action-packed prestige edition of the game. It includes a paracord strap, a Steelbook, and an HD Tactical Camera. “Naturally, we’re going to do what you do when you have a badass tactical camera strapped to your head,” the boys say. I realize I’m definitely not a video gamer when I have no idea what the next step will be. Parkour? Surveillance?

“We’re going to breach some stuff!!” Jake and Amir proceed to burst through doors, elevator doors, garden gates, and bathroom stalls, entering unexpected scenarios as they go. The best part is when they’re the uninvited guests at a little princess’s tea party. “Hi guys!” she squeaks, and we see them taking a moment to sip out of miniature purple plastic cups. The whole thing is a fun idea, far better than watching a fictional character slaughter everything in his path while the new Eminem single “Survival” plays. If only we all had disposable screen doors and wacky neighbors worthy of tactical camera footage. As it is, mothers should prepare for the onslaught of their teenage boys trying to karate chop the front door.

Toshiba, Capital C Make College Awkward Again

Toronto shop Capital C and Toshiba have teamed for a new online back-to-school campaign meant for silly college guys who need cool technology. Sometimes, these college guys use the technology for school, other times, for play. In “Chicken Prank,” a helpless dormer finds himself wrapped to his bed with chickens on the loose, and to get out of the rut, he waves his feet in front of a touch-controlled monitor. In “Math Notes,” handwritten notes on a tablet lead to an awkward moment of affection between roommates. And in “Black Light,” well, I’ll let you figure that one out on your own.

What’s most interesting about this trio of Toshiba spots is that they are clearly targeting only males. I’m not sure if any female-themed spots about woo girls and sorority hijinks are on the docket, but I’m curious to know why Toshiba is only looking for collegiate males to purchase products for this campaign, especially considering more girls than guys go to college. But, aside from the oversight, the creatives took care of business with some safely effective locker room humor.
