Flight Intestine Sculpting

Watch Brand-New TV Ads From Gatorade, Bud Light, Dial and More

Every weekday, we bring you the Ad Age/iSpot Hot Spots, new and trending TV commercials tracked by iSpot.tv, a company that catalogs, tags and measures activity around TV ads in real time. The New Releases ran on TV for the first time yesterday. The Most Engaging ads are showing sustained social heat, ranked by SpotShare scores reflecting the percent of digital activity associated with each one over the past week. See the methodology here.

Among the new spots, Washington Nationals outfielder Bryce Harper comes out swinging for Gatorade, to a Guns N’ Roses soundtrack; Bud Light serves up its newest malted-beverage flavor, the Raz-Ber-Rita (“margarita with a twist”); and longtime Subway pitchman Ryan Howard, the Philadelphia Phillies first baseman, also comes out swinging — with, uh, poetry.

As always, you can find out more about the making of the best commercials on TV at Ad Age’s Creativity.

Puppies Help Combat ‘Slacktivism’ for BBDO Colenso

Puppy spots pretty much write themselves, but this one from BBDO Colenso goes a bit further than most, explaining YouTube’s business model and following with a particularly direct call-to-action that helps viewers donate without spending any money by using views as virtual currency that won’t just vanish like Bitcoin.

The release describes it as “potentially a new way for charities around the world to raise money.”

That strategy might conflict with Facebook’s new anti-spam algorithm, but as puppy owners we’re quite  susceptible to the message.

Credits after the jump (though the real star of the spot appears on the floor at 0:47).

Smart Cars Will Fit Anywhere, Even in the Slim Space Between Other Ads

In a world of crowded ad spaces and precious few parking spaces, Mercedes and Madrid agency Contrapunto BBDO are hoping to make the most of both shortcomings with these cleverly placed Smart car ads.

Printed on the narrow side of an outdoor ad display, the small image of a Smart is joined by the phrase "Siempre hay un hueco," Spanish for "There's always a space."

As commenters on Ads of the World were quick to point out, this idea isn't exactly a first of its kind. The line and basic premise were even used in a student project in Argentina last year.

Duplication aside, there's also a more pertinent issue: I doubt I would have even noticed it if someone else hadn't pointed it out as an ad.

Weibo Shares Surge On First Day of Trading

Weibo Corp., the Chinese microblogging service owned by Sina Corp., surged 19% in its first day of trading after pricing its initial public offering at the low end of the marketed range.

The shares climbed $3.24 to $21.24 as in New York, after they were priced at $17 each. Weibo, which also counts Alibaba Group Holdings among its backers, raised $285.6 million in the IPO, after offering the shares for $17 to $19 apiece.

Weibo’s IPO was set against the backdrop of tumbling stocks. Since the company publicly filed for its IPO on March 14, U.S. peer Twitter dropped more than 14% through yesterday amid a broad decline in technology stocks while Sina fell 18 percent. Weibo joins seven other Chinese Internet companies that have filed to raise a total of $2.8 billion in New York this year.

Lease-to-Own Retailer Promises You’ll Go From Rags to Riches in No Time

Can't afford that furniture, those appliances or those electronics? Sure you can.

Aaron's, the lease-to-own retailer, has unveiled a new ad campaign that suggests leasing products from the company isn't just a wise idea for credit-challenged people—it's the first step toward becoming rich and famous beyond your wildest dreams.

The ads, from 22squared, feature characters—Bobby, Charmony and Emilio—who've become wildly successful, but as it turns out, they once didn't even know the basics of living beyond their means. A fourth ad stars Nascar driver Brian Vickers, who apparently just gets super excited about Aaron's in general.

The theme is "Own the life you want," which is certainly an interesting mix of aspirational and financial—a reminder that, for many, they're one and the same.

General Mills’ Legal Policy Could Threaten Consumer Goodwill

General Mills in recent years has put major emphasis on engaging consumers online, whether it be through Twitter, Facebook, or a multitude of websites — from Pillsbury.com to Que Rica Vida — that microtarget consumers. But a new legal policy threatens to erode at least some of the digital goodwill that the packaged food giant has earned with its fans.

The policy, first reported in the New York Times, informs consumers that they give up the right to sue the company if they engage in several types of online behavior, such as “joining our sites as a member, joining our online community, subscribing to our email newsletters, downloading or printing a digital coupon, entering a sweepstakes or contest” and more.

The new policy was posted to the General Mills corporate web site with an April 2 effective date. The rules began drawing attention in the wake of Times story, which was published online on April 16 and headlined, “When ‘Liking’ a Brand Online Voids the Right to Sue.”

Facebook Won’t Use Data from New Friend Location Tool for Ads

Facebook’s latest feature allows people to share their location with friends, but don’t expect to be able to use the data to target ads anytime soon.

“The answer is no, we are not using data from Nearby Friends or Location History to target ads right now,” said a Facebook spokesperson. “Currently, advertisers can target ads based on location. To determine location, we use things like people’s current city that they list on their profiles, and their IP address. We do not currently target ads to people based on GPS coordinates.”

As is the norm with Facebook, the company is rolling out the new feature but not discussing details on data gathering, ad targeting or other applications that could be facilitated by the location-based tool down the road.

Bacardi Takes Sole Sponsorship of New Basketball Lifestyle Site

Young mens’ publisher Complex Media is starting another website backed by a single brand, this time a basketball site that will carry ads for only Bacardi Flavored Rum for the next nine months.

The site, Triangle Offense, arrives just as the NBA playoffs are starting, but it’s really meant to cover pro and college basketball without dwelling on saturated areas such as stats, schedules or, for that matter, triangle offenses. Its focus instead is on the players’ high-flying lifestyle — their clothes, tattoos, cars, watches and so on. “We came to this realization that there was this white space out there in the basketball arena,” said Moksha Fitzgibbons, head of sales at Complex Media. “We believe there’s an opportunity to do a land grab.”

The focus on lifestyle also appealed to Bacardi Flavored Rum, which paid between $1 million and $3 million to sponsor the site for a nine-month period, according to people familiar with the deal.

‘House of Cards’ With Your Cellphone Subscription? Vodafone Seen in Netflix Talks

Vodafone Group, the world’s second-largest mobile carrier, is in talks with Netflix to offer subscribers access to streaming movies and TV shows, three people familiar with the discussions said.

A deal would give Vodafone customers free access to Netflix content for a period of time, the people said, asking not to be named because the agreement isn’t final. Talks are at an early stage, they said.

Vodafone is adding more content to its lineup as CEO Vittorio Colao transforms the company into a one-stop-shop for customers who want to access applications, entertainment, and files on fixed and mobile connections.

Tim PriesJohn_Hunt_5 copyJudy Leung

Creative content agency Bonfire Labs continues its growth with the addition of three top-level hires: executive producer Tim Pries, producer John Hunt and designer Judy Leung. The company, which grew by 33% last year, sees the hires as a means “to accommodate burgeoning client demand and enhance its staff infrastructure.”

Executive producer Tim Pries is already a familiar face around Bonfire Labs, having worked with many of the Bonfire crew throughout his career. His most recent collaboration came while he was an executive producer at Google’s Brand Studio. Before that position, Pries served as executive producer at Goodby, Silverstein & Partners’ post/motion division, eLevel, where he worked alongside several Bonfire alums creating work for the likes of TDAmeritrade, Chevy, Sprint, HP, Adobe, Cisco, YouTube, NBA and Comcast. He began his career at the San Francisco based VFX studio, Radium.

John Hunt arrives at Bonfire following eight seasons as a live-action producer on the Discovery Channel’s MythBusters. His resume also includes work on Emmy Award-winning legal drama The Practice, and showson FOX, Animal Planet, and Australia’s Nine Network. In addition, Hunt “has been a presenter on educational programming at the National Science Teachers Association Conference, and produced digital media for Discovery in partnership with General Electric.”

Judy Leung “is accomplished in multiple design disciplines, ranging from graphic design and typography through to photo color correction and retouching.” She has previously worked with the Pacifica Chamber of Commerce, Hyphen Magazine and as a team lead for Minted.

“We are pleased to add these uniquely talented individuals to the roster of talent already at Bonfire Labs,” said Bonfire Labs’ managing director Jim Bartel. “Each of them will make a valuable contribution as we continue to leverage our unique position in the industry.”
