Mark Sanford Is Latest Victim of an AshleyMadison Billboard Attack

AshleyMadison.com doesn't get political unless there's a sex scandal to exploit, so of course they jumped all over Mark Sanford. Wait, that came out wrong. The extramarital dating website is endorsing Sanford, the former governor now running for Congress, with a billboard in his home state of South Carolina that says "Next time use AshleyMadison.com to find your 'running mate.' " That's a reference to his "Appalachian Trail" excuse for why he went missing that time for six days. I don't see how AshleyMadison would have helped him since a) his other woman lived on another continent and he still got caught, and b) Sanford is kind of an idiot. But AshleyMadison's job is sleaze, not logic. Not to be outdone, Larry Flynt has also endorsed Sanford, hailing him as "America's great sex pioneer."

Reminder: Do Not Show a Man Having Sex With a Pig on Your Billboard

Of all the images to take from British TV series Black Mirror, the one that made a billboard for Australian TV network Studio was of a man doing the underpants Charleston with a pig. Cable provider Foxtel issued an apology in response to the immediate blowback, and it's as spineless as the offending image was tasteless and bewildering. "[The billboard] was intended to provoke," it said in a statement, "but it is clearly in appalling taste and demonstrates a lapse of judgment by Studio, and a failure in the approvals process at Foxtel." Well, no kidding. Why even move forward with an idea like that when you know you'll just have to apologize and take it right down? Part of me wants to see what would have happened if they'd stood their ground.

Sensacional.

Conde Nast Intros 30 Web Series, Promises to Pay to Promote Them

There are old media companies doing digital upfronts like CBS Interactive, NBC Digital and Univision. Then there’s old media that that still trades mostly in dead trees.

Conde Nast, the publisher of high-gloss magazines from Vogue to GQ, joined the NewFront fray for the first time Wednesday with a presentation in New York on Wednesday, showing clips from a voluminous planned lineup of 30 new shows. Conde showed excerpts from Wired’s “Angry Nerd,” Glamour’s “Single Life” and a serious GQ documentary, “Casualties of the Gridiron,” about the injuries plaguing former NFL players.

The NewFronts are a series of pitches by digital publishers seeking TV ad budgets partly by imitating TV’s long-running upfronts. And Conde Nast Entertainment chief Dawn Ostroff is no stranger to the upfronts, having done them for years as president of The CW. She said she joined Conde Nast Entertainment, the unit charged with turning the company’s magazine brands into video and film properties, for two reasons. First, she saw The CW’s young audience migrating to the web. Second, today’s web video looks a lot like basic cable did 20 years ago.

JWT ATL, Wicker Part Ways

We’ve been hearing about this since last Friday, and now it appears to be so as sources familiar with the matter confirm that JWT has parted ways with Lynda Wicker, who has spent well over a decade serving as human resources director at the agency. Wicker has worked out of the WPP-owned agency’s Atlanta office and we’ve been told that there are plans to replace he (as one would think). From what we’re hearing, JWT ATL/Houston/Dallas chief creative officer Perry Fair is addressing staff regarding Wicker’s departure, which goes into effect today. We’ll let you know if and when we hear more.

WPP Chief Executive Martin Sorrell Takes Cut to Annual Salary

WPP Group Chief Executive Martin Sorrell has taken a slight cut in his annual salary and benefits, after 60% of shareholders rejected his $20 million pay package at last year’s annual general meeting.

After consultations with disgruntled shareholders, WPP Group said in its annual report that the compensation committee had “sought to balance the broad range of views expressed by shareowners with the needs of the business,” but admitted that the new arrangements “will not meet every shareowner’s individual preferences or views on what’s best for the company.”

There has also been an overhaul of the compensation committee — chair Jeffrey Rosen is stepping down from the role after nine years, but will remain a director of the company. (A replacement has been identified but cannot be disclosed until client conflict has been cleared.) Esther Dyson and Philip Lader will also leave the compensation committee in December 2013. In another sign that WPP Group is bowing to investor pressure, it has recruited four new non-executive directors.
