Third-party publishers of headlines and images at the bottom of news articles that link to “recommended stories” must more clearly label “sponsored content,” the National Advertising Division said Wednesday.
The NAD’s recommendation focused on Taboola, one of several companies that place headlines and images on publishers’ websites — usually below or next to news stories — that link to a combination of advertising and editorial content on that site or other sites. Companies like Taboola get paid when a reader clicks on a link; they share that money with the publisher.
Two New Commercials Use Anti-Digital Sentiments To Sell Things
Posted in: UncategorizedLet’s make fun of digital culture, shall we? It’s certainly an easy target.
With barbeque season upon us, Kingsford Charcoal is launching a new campaign with the aggressive tagline “Get Off Your Gas.” The work was created by DDB California, which neatly showcases the contrast between the self-indulgent, smartphone obsessed and those who embrace the simple pleasures of life, like charcoal grilling.
Now, let’s look at another spot—this time from Crispin, Porter + Bogusky—which is built on this simple truth: people lie on the internet.
To get back at these TV-making smart asses, an angry Webster might say mean things on his blog, or Tweet up a storm. But that’s such a lame response to well-made and well-funded broadcast sarcasm. Well-made and well-funded broadcast sarcasm has Chevy Chase, Bill Murray and Tina Fey on its side. Who do bloggers and Tweeters have to defend their honor?

Havas Buys London Digital Hotshop Work Club
Posted in: UncategorizedHavas has acquired 51% of London digital agency Work Club.
The agency will become Havas Work Club and will be part of the Havas Worldwide UK Group reporting to Kate Robertson, chairman of the Havas Worldwide Group in the U.K.
Patrick Griffith, CEO of Work Club, said of the decision to join Havas, “A lot of it is gut feel — it’s a good cultural fit. Havas has a challenger perspective and they didn’t come at us with an agency approach; they have a compelling digital-centric vision. We’re not walking into a lot of incumbent digital stuff because it’s all integrated.”

Former Razorfish President Named Global CEO at Essence
Posted in: UncategorizedChristian Juhl, former president of Razorfish, has been named global CEO of London-based digital agency Essence.
Never heard of them? They have additional offices in New York, Seattle, San Francisco and Singapore, and their release names them the world’s largest independent buyer of digital media. Their media AOR relationships include Google and eBay, among others.
Juhl, who is the agency’s first new CEO (founding partner/global CEO Matt Isaacs, who founded Essence in London in 2005, will now be executive chairman), left his role as president of Razorfish’s Western region for Essence in October 2013. He previously served as head of the agency’s North American operations, and he will remain in San Francisco for the new role.
Isaacs isn’t the only founder switching roles: chief strategist Andrew Shebbeare‘s new title will be founding partner/global innovation
director and CIO Andy Bonsall will serve as executive consultant. Both will relocate to London.
