How to Design Your Online Shopping Cart

The design of an online shopping cart can either make the buying experience clear and exciting for your customer or be very confusing and ineffective, and possibly lead to high cart abandonment rates. If you want your online business to thrive, it is essential for you to know what features will make your online shopping cart design efficient. This article lists a few tips which can be helpful when designing an online cart.

Less is More
When designing an online shopping cart, remember that less is more. The simpler your online shopping cart is, the less irritated your customer will get and the more likely he or she will go through with his or her purchase. Limited shipping, payment methods options or having to create an account with your online business to check out an item, can lead to higher cart abandonment rate. Keep in mind that professionalism and clarity are also very important aspects. Even customers with little Internet knowledge should be able to understand your online shopping cart design with no problem.

One Page or Step-by-step Approach
You can either chose to have your online shopping cart displayed on one page or create several steps to go through to check out an item on your website. The first option offers more flexibility and information, as your customer will be able to change quantities of items, review the order, and apply discounts all in one setting. However, it can become confusing if there is so much information that your client does not know where to click to confirm a purchase. A step by step approach might be simpler to use and easier to understand for online consumers, but may offer less flexibility. If a customer needs to change his or her order before finishing the purchase, he or her will need to go a few pages back to do so, which might make the process more difficult. Choosing one option over the other depends on your type of business and the data you want displayed on your online shopping cart design.

Where is The Cart?
… Is a question your online customers should never have to ask? Make sure that you can see the online cart at all times when navigating through your online business. The checkout option should also be very easy to find, as well as the ability to know what you already have in your cart at all times. Design options that include ‘checkout’ buttons or links, a small cart button in the corner or top of all your webpages or a simple layout to review the order.

Continue Shopping
It may not seem like a very important aspect at first, but the ability to continue shopping is an essential feature of your online shopping cart. Your customers need to be able to add a few more items or modify their purchase as needed without having to lose what they already checked out. Providing features to save your customers information if needed can also be helpful, but make sure to not make it a mandatory step for first-time buyers. Some people do not want to have their information saved or have to create an account for a one-time purchase, and may go to a competitor who does not require them to.

Designing an online cart can seem like a challenging and daunting task, but can yield to more revenues and sales if done properly. Keep in mind that a clear, easy to use, professional design with features your customer actually needs, will make the purchase experience a pleasant one.

Terrible Timing: Google Reliability Team Launches Reddit Q&A Just as Gmail Goes Down

In a truly painful moment of unfortunate coincidence, Google's Site Reliability Engineering Team launched a Reddit AMA ("Ask Me Anything") this afternoon, just as Gmail went offline for users around the world.

Four of Google's senior site reliability engineers were preparing to answer questions when the AMA was announced at 2 p.m. Eastern today, with the goal of starting officially at 3 p.m. At almost the exact same moment as the AMA announcement, Gmail and Google+ users began losing access to the services.

A link in the AMA summary directed users to Google's App Status Dashboard for information on the outage, which did little to stop the influx of jokes at the Q&A team's expense. (In fairness, the team answering questions is focused on search, storage and ads, not Gmail and Google+.)

"Please explain in detail what goes on in a gmail outage like the one going on right now," requested one Reddit user. "Take your time."

"Have you tried turning it off and on again?" noted another.

At the time of this writing, the AMA was just beginning, service had been restored to some Gmail users, and the engineers seemed to be answering questions at a steady clip. One of the first questions answered was "Sooo….what's it like there when a Google service goes down? How much freaking out is done?"

"Very little freaking out actually," responded Google site reliability manager Dave O'Connor. "We have a well-oiled process for this that all services use—we use thoroughly documented incident management procedures, so people understand their role explicitly and can act very quickly."

For more from the engineering team, check out the full AMA.

Three Ways to Protect Your Identity and Stay Safe During a Video Sharing Session

Research studies confirm that over 20 percent of Americans have used the Internet to make video calls, according to Mashable.com. You might be impressed by this figure and even feel comfortable with engaging in video calls and chats even more with your friends, relatives, coworkers. and even complete strangers because of it. However, you need to also remember online video chats and conferences are also attractive and interesting for cybercriminals and computer hackers as well. There are six different ways you can stay safe and secured whenever hosting a video sharing session online.

Understand the Terms of Service

One of the most effective ways that you can remain safe and secured through an online video sharing session is to take the time to study the terms and conditions of the website or application that you will be using first and foremost. Keep in mind that the terms of service may change drastically from one company to the next. When it comes to such key areas as intellectual property, privacy rights, and the overall handling of the footage saved and stored within their respective online databases, you need to make sure that have all of your questions answered and concerns addressed before proceeding any further, according to Safety Web.

Do Not Forget about the Public Exposure

Another great way to maintain safety and security when it comes to video sharing through the Internet is to keep in mind that everything you post will become immediately available to the rest of the world. Even though there are ways to maintain online privacy, once you decide to involve yourself in the wide world of video sharing online, there truly is no such thing.

When you are posting videos within your social media profiles, for example, you are never going to be in complete control over that content. Chances are that the terms of those sites don’t provide perpetual access and, in some extreme cases, may even claim ownership and rights over that footage. Therefore, keep in mind that what you share online through your video camera can easily be controlled by someone that you have never met before without your permission, according to Live Science.

Pay Close Attention to Your Setting

In addition to remaining mindful of public exposure and terms of service, you also need to pay close attention to your background and the overall setting of your online video sharing sessions. You may not realize it. but your background can reveal much more about you than you think, especially if it is closely analyzed by a person or company that is focusing on every single detail that is provided.

Even if you do your best to encrypt the data that you share online and use a fake name when connecting with other people through your computer or mobile device, a minor detail that is overlooked in your background can completely nullify all of that. For example, popular landmarks, road signs, pictures and photographs, and even specific types of branded apparel and merchandise can reveal your location as well as your overall identity, according to Connect Safely.

The Bottom Line

Hosting an online video sharing session personally or professionally offers a host of advantages and benefits to the average consumer. You can efficiently communicate with as many people as you want regardless of where they are geographically located around the world within a matter of a few seconds by using this type of technology. However, if you don’t follow the steps covered above to protect your identity and remain safe, you could very well live the rest of your life regretting that you ever decided to share anything online in the first place.
