W+K Brings LeBron, Cleveland ‘Together’ for Nike

W+K has a new ad for Nike, promoting the launch of its new LEBRON 12 sneaker today with a celebration of LeBron James’ return to Cleveland directed by the Malloy Brothers.

Yes, that’s right: another LeBron James ad about the star’s return to Cleveland. This follows on the heels of Translation’s spot for Sprite (which we wrote about yesterday) and R/GA’s “Re-Established 2014? for Beats, which deal with the exact same subject, as well as the recent Kia spot from David&Goliath, also starring James. Nike’s new spot will run tonight during the Cavs first home game, when it’s theoretically possible that ads featuring James will run back-to-back-to-back.

So there’s a bit of an oversaturation issue with this message, to put it mildly. But how does W+K’s version compare to the others we’ve seen? It might actually be the most melodramatic of the bunch. It opens on James giving a pep talk to his team about giving their all for the city of Cleveland. Soon the entire city is in a huddle, chanting, “Forward! Together!” It’s well-shot, in black and white, but the message comes across as a bit over-the-top, all the more so given the story’s overexposure. The spot will continue to run through November.

BarrettSF Gets Librarian Steve Nash for DailyMVP

BarrettSF enlisted the aid of Steve Nash to promote TopLine Game Lab’s DailyMVP fantasy game, which differentiates itself from other fantasy sports leagues by offering short-format games that last from a day to a week.

In the ad, Nash dons spectacles and a wig, appearing as an everyday librarian who can feel like an MVP thanks to the fantasy app. “I love being a librarian,” Nash says at the start of the spot, “but some days can be a little quiet.” He goes on to demonstrate the app and how it adds some excitement to his daily routine (while getting shushed). The spot ends with the tagline, “Have an MVP day,” emphasizing the short format. It was released to coincide with the start of the NBA season. A future spot starring Tom Brady will roll out near the end of the NFL season, when many players in traditional fantasy leagues have already been eliminated. (more…)

Translation Presents ‘LeBron James’ First Home Game’ for Sprite

Translation recently debuted a new spot for Sprite documenting LeBron James return to his home town of Akron, Ohio.

Entitled “LeBron James’ First Home Game” the spot follows James as a driver takes him through Akron and to Patterson Park, where Sprite has restored two basketball courts. This footage is interpersed with Akron residents discussing how epic James’ first home game for the Cavaliers will be. James arrives at Patterson Park where a throng of excited fans follows him as he sits and watches a pick up game. “They say home is where your heart is. Well my heart is here, it’s always been,” James says. “This is my first game,” he adds, before telling the guys on the court, “I’ve got next.” (Good luck with that, guys.)

It’s an emotional approach, if somewhat muted from coming on the heels of R/GA’s ad for Beats carrying much the same message. Still, aside from the awful Imagine Dragons song used to soundtrack the spot, it’s well put-together and those not already feeling overly-saturated by ads starring James (he also appears in this recent Kia spot) should find it enjoyable enough, especially Cavs fans. A 30-second version of the spot will run during the Cavs first home game later this month, and Sprite has also issued “commemorative 12-ounce cans featuring James’ likeness that are available in Ohio stores,” according to Creativity.

David&Goliath, LeBron Tout Kia as ‘Fit for a King’

David&Goliath teamed up with NBA superstar LeBron James in its latest effort for Kia, which recently extended its contract as “official automotive partner of the NBA.”

In the spot, James emerges from the Kia’s new K900 luxury sedan at some type of glitzy red carpet event. The star struck valet stumbles over his words as LeBron tosses him the keys and says “Keep it close,” followed by the taglne “Fit for a King.” Entitled “Valet,” the ad is perfectly timed, breaking today on the opening day of the NBA season. It arrives as James rides a wave of publicity for his much-discusses return to Cleveland, which was celebrated in a recent Beats campaign. At any rate, the spot aims for a stylish simplicity, letting the ride — and LeBron’s endorsement of it — mostly speak for itself. (more…)

Charles Barkley Returns for CDW, Ogilvy & Mather

CDW and Ogilvy & Mather teamed up to bring back Charles Barkley for the latest iteration of the brand’s “People Who Get IT” campaign, which Barkley has appeared in since 2012.

The new “Smart Growth 2.0?campaign, which focuses on partnerships with Microsoft, ADC and Lenovo, debuts tonight with 30-second broadcast spots during Monday Night Football. Once again featuring the fictional Gordon & Taylor company, the spots show Barkley and company dealing with new growth as they attempt to keep up with innovation. CDW, of course, is presented as the solution. The best of the spots features a different take on the “mobile work station.” The campaign is supported by online and social elements, as well as “internal engagement programs, sales enablement, customer events, CDW.com promotions and public relations support.”

Dutch Top Model Doutzen Kroes Stars in Cheel’s Latest for Samsung Netherlands

Cheel has released a new campaign for Samsung’s new Galaxy Alpha smartphone, featuring top model Doutzen Kroes.

The campaign is centered around a 30-second broadcast spot capitalizing on Kroes’ popularity. In the spot, Kroes is shown out clubbing with friends (according to the PR release, these are her actual friends, in real life!). Kroes finds reason to use her phone in various ways, as text such as “metal design” and “supersnelle autofocus” appear onscreen. Ultimately, it a very forgettable approach, as it seems Cheel is really banking on Kroes’ star power to carry the spot.

“The campaign perfectly illustrates the feeling that the Galaxy Alpha personifies: connected and stylish at the same time, while you enjoy the fun things in life,” said Gerben van Walt Meijer, Samsung mobile marketing manager. (more…)

Air New Zealand Returns to Middle Earth with ‘The Most Epic Safety Video Ever Made’ from True

Air New Zealand, no stranger to well-publicized safety videos, is today launching “The Most Epic Safety Video Ever Made,” created by agency True and directed by Kiwi filmmaker Taika Waititi, in anticipation of the December release of The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies

The airline has been cashing in on the popularity of Peter Jackson‘s Tolkien adaptations since his Lord of The Rings trilogy, and this latest installment marks the third themed effort for The Hobbit series (less than a year after the last campaign), and the second flight safety video. Shot over the course of six days, at numerous locations used in the filming of the series, the spot also includes appearances from Elijah Wood (Frodo Baggins), Dean O’Gorman (Fili the Dwarf) and Sylvester McCoy (Radagast), as well as Jackson himself. As cheesy as might be expected, the ad will undoubtedly appeal to the kind of diehard Tolkien/Jackson fans who would plan a trip to New Zealand based around the films. It’s a much more sure bet than the controversial “Safety in Paradise” from earlier this year, as Middle Earth tourism has been a boon for New Zealand.

Director Peter Jackson was pleased with the video, saying, “Air New Zealand has created yet another fantastic video to celebrate The Hobbit films. This latest offering combines members of our cast and our locations with Air New Zealand’s unique personality.  I had a lot of fun on the set with Taika and the team and look forward to seeing the video on board.”

Ant Farm Teases Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare Release for Activision

With the release of Activision’s Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare coming up on November 4th, Ant Farm has released a 60-second gameplay trailer, the last piece in the long advertising onslaught for the game, which kicked off with a reveal trailer starring Kevin Spacey (who voices a character in the game) back in May.

Lines from Spacey’s in-game character hold together the trailer, along with gameplay footage and quotes from advanced reviews of the title, such as Forbes‘ “…transcends the line between game and film…” The spot highlights the changes from previous iterations in the franchise, touting a more important plot and improved multiplayer while putting the game’s improved graphics on display. Fans of the franchise have probably already put in their pre-orders but emphasizing the changes in the franchise could bring some newcomers on board.

“We’ve been partners with Activision on the Call of Duty franchise from its infancy, and over the years we’ve had the fantastic opportunity to see it grow to become the massive pop culture phenomenon it is today,” said Rob Troy, chief creative officer at Ant Farm. “This year, the graphics and the multiplayer aspects of Advanced Warfare took a huge leap forward, so the creative aspects behind this campaign needed to pay homage to that.” (more…)

Tom Brady Returns, With His Dog, For M&C Saatchi, UGG

M&C Saatchi brings back Tom Brady, this time along with his dog, for its third installment of its fall global marketing campaign for UGG Australia.

The spot continues the theme of the Patriots quarterback enjoying his time off the field. Entitled “Down Time,” the 60-second spot opens with Brady walking in slow motion (filmed in black and white), set to serious music. “This is what it all comes down to; this is what all the hard work is for,” Brady says, “The long days, the extra hours, all for moments like these.” Brady then plays with his dog, Lua, while wearing the “Munro” boot from UGG for Men’s Fall collection.

Those who were critical of UGG’s previous Brady-starring ads will find plenty to complain of here with the self-seriousness of “Down Time.” Meanwhile, the Patriots QB can still do no wrong in the eyes of his most ardent admirers. Whether or not he can convince Boston sports bros to lace up UGG boots, though, is another question.

R/GA LA Celebrate LeBron’s Homecoming for Beats by Dre

R/GA Los Angeles celebrates LeBron James‘ much discussed return to the Cleveland Cavaliers in a new campaign for Beats by Dre entitled “Re-Established 2014.”

The campaign is centered around a 2:15 ad crafted as a sort of love letter to James’ hometown of Akron, Ohio. The spot intersperses shots of the city, including signs in churches and movie theaters celebrating his return, with a shirtless James working out in an auditorium named after him at St. Vincent-St. Mary, the high school he attended in Akron, set to Hozier’s “Tale Me to the Church.” James wears Beats earbuds while working out, the only real nod to the brand in the spot. To add to the emotional impact, the voiceover is read by Gloria James, LeBron’s mother. “This is the city that raised you,” she says, “I’m so proud of you. Welcome home, son.”

Given James’ star status and the emotional tone of the ad, it was bound to attract attention. So it shouldn’t come as a surprise that the video has already received over four million YouTube views since its debut two days ago. Expect that number to balloon by the time the NBA season kicks off next Tuesday. Other, shorter supporting spots in the campaign highlight different aspects of Akron, LeBron’s upbringing and homecoming.  (more…)

David Beckham Stars in New Haig Club Whisky Ad

David Beckham is certainly no stranger to advertising, but as far as we’re aware this is the first time the former soccer superstar has appeared in an ad for booze.

Beckham stars in the new spot for Haig Club Whisky, which was directed by Guy Ritchie. The ad sees Beckham partying it up at a remote estate in the Scottish highland — the kind of swanky real estate its fair to assume he and wife Victoria Beckham actually own — after meeting up with a group of friends. Beckham doesn’t speak in the ad (there’s no dialogue, actually) but he’s still the focus of attention, with Ritchie mostly keeping the camera focused on the star in the well-shot ad. No word yet on which agency was responsible, but we will update if/when we receive that information.

Droga5 Swarms Taylor Swift with Kittens for Diet Coke

Earlier this month, Droga5 released the spot “Car Wash” as part of its “Get A Taste” campaign for Diet Coke. Now the agency is rolling out a new 30-second ad starring Taylor Swift and a whole lot of kittens.

In the spot, entitled “Kittens,” Swift is playing with a kitten when she takes a sip of Diet Coke and all of a sudden there are two kittens. She takes another sip and there’s an entire table full of kittens, and before the end of the spot the entire room is filled as the singer/songwriter is engulfed in a swarm of feline cuteness. “What if life tasted as good as Diet Coke?” says text at the end of the ad, before Swift works in a quick plug for her new album. Since everyone with a soul likes kittens, this one is sure to be a hit. Add in Swift’s star power, and a preview of a new track featured exclusively in the ad until the release of her new album on October 27th, and this is all but guaranteed millions of views.

The ad was launched online today and will make its broadcast debut this Friday. As part of the campaign, Diet Coke is also giving fans a chance to win “concert tickets and a flyaway trip for two to an upcoming performance through iHeartRadio.com, RyanSeacrest.com and other sites.” The brand is also sponsoring Swift’s co-host appearance on “On Air with Ryan Seacrest” on October 30th, the first time a celebrity co-hosts the entire program as well as the first time it is presented by a single brand. DLKW Lowe Gets Weird with Ashton Kutcher for Lenovo

DLKW Lowe teamed up with Ashton Kutcher for a series of offbeat ads promoting Lenovo Yoga Tablet 2 Pro.

In the spots, Kutcher engages in some unusual pastimes, including milking his goat for his morning cereal (while reading the tablet), painting beaver portraits with his toes and knitting. Offbeat humor is nothing new for the brand, which teamed up with Onion Labs for the ongoing satirical fantasy football series Tough Season. While this latest effort from DLKW doesn’t reach the comedic highs of Onion Labs’ creation, it certainly is memorable. (Who could forget Kutcher’s horrifying beaver portrait?) (more…)

Publicis Kaplan Thaler Brings BBQ to the People for Wendy’s

Publicis Kaplan Thaler recently launched a campaign for Wendy’s new barbecue offerings, entitled “#BBQ4Merica.”

The online campaign debuted with a kind of mock PSA, introducing Wendy’s new menu items as tackling the issue of “barbecue inaccessiblity” for people in places like Miami Beach, Cape Cop and Malibu. “Hi I’m a celebrity, and these are just a few of the geographically underprivileged places where millions of Americans don’t have easy access to quality barbecue,” says a solemn Carlton Alfonso Ribeiro in the ad. He’s joined by Ralph Macchio and Steve Austin for the effort, and the trio appear individually in a series of other videos for the campaign (stick around for a couple after the break).

In addition to the online videos, the digital effort includes a call to make barbecue the “National Dish of America” and an invitation to “sponsor” friends by tagging them on social channels using the hashtag “#BBQ4Merica” There was also a recent 24-hour tweet-a-thon event hosted by Ribeiro, in which participants helped unlock content and win swag. Starworks Group Rocks the Vote with Lil Jon in ‘Turn Out for What’

Starworks Group enlisted the aid of Lil Jon, Whoopi Goldberg, Lena Dunham, Fred Armisen and a host of other celebrities for a Rock the Vote spot set to a reworking of Lil Jon’s “Turn Down for What” as “Turn Out for What.”

The spot opens with Lil Jon informing Goldberg that he’s turning out for the midterm elections. At the polling center he meets a big fan and runs into Lena Dunham, who won’t reveal Girls spoilers to the rapper, much to his dismay. Around the video’s midpoint, celebrities start mentioning the causes they are turning out to vote for over “Turn Out for What.” (Surprise: Lil Jon is turning out for marijuana legalization.) Say what you will about the ad’s over-the-top approach, but it’s certainly received its share of attention, racking up almost 600,00 YouTube views since being posted earlier in the week. (more…)

180 Amsterdam Puts Replay’s Hyperflex Jeans to the Test

180 Amsterdam puts Replay’s Hyperflex jeans to the test in a new online video demonstrating the elasticity of the brand’s newest offering.

In the ad, which stars Brazilian supermodel Alessandra Ambrosio and features FC Barcelona players (including Neymar), Ambrosio’s alter ego — Doctor Ambrosio — conducts a series of tests designed to highlight the Hyperflex’s elasticity. The pants are put through such “modern lifestyle tests” as twerking, playing soccer, hip hop dancing, and some more twerking for good measure, ending with the tagline “Stretch your limits.” The 90-second online spot is certainly on the goofy side, but it does demonstrate the Hyperflex’s stretching capacity well, and it has the star power to generate a lot of views. In addition to the online spot, the campaign also includes print and OOH components.

“Replay’s Hyperflex is a revolution in denim,” said Al Moseley, president and chief creative officer, 180 Amsterdam. “Our task was to stretch it to the limits. The tests we put it through were extraordinary. The outcome, as people will see, is truly remarkable.” (more…)

Droga5 Gets Sarah Silverman to Become a Man for National Women’s Law Center

Droga5 enlisted the services of “writer, comedian and vagina owner” Sarah Silverman for a new spot addressing the wage gap for National Women’s Law Center.

Silverman introduces viewers to the wage gap issue, pointing out that over the course of their lives women pay a “$500,000 vagina tax,” before informing viewers that she’s becoming a man, since the operation is actually cheaper than dealing with a lifetime of income disparity. She then introduces National Women’s Law Center’s crowdfunding effort to raise the trillions of dollars American women are cheated out of by gender inequality in the workplace, to be payed back to each of them. Since the goal is basically unreachable, it actually serves as a fund raiser for National Women’s Law Center’s efforts, since they receive the money as a donation if (when) the goal isn’t reached. The video ends by directing viewers to EqualPaybackProject.com, which goes live today to inform visitors about the gender gap and accepts donations to the crowdfunding effort. It’s a clever approach, addressing the absurdity of the issue in a way people are sure to remember.

“Equal pay may not be a sexy issue, but it’s an important one,” Casey Rand, Droga5 creative director, told Adweek. “And it is absurd. Young women need to know what’s at stake. And we knew that to get them to engage, we’d need to play up that absurdity.” (more…)

O Positive Crafts Ode to Nature for The Nature Conservancy

Production studio O Positive enlisted the services of actress Jessica Chastain in a new PSA for The Nature Conservancy.

Chastain reads a poem by Matthew Dickman entitled “Our Nature.” The spot, directed by Peyton Wilson sets Chastain’s reading of the poem to a dramatic piano track, coming across more like a short film about love than a PSA, until it’s revealed that the love Chastain is talking about is her love of nature. As the 60-second PSA continues, the camera turns more and more to shots of the beautiful Sierra Mountains, and Chastain interacting with the natural world around her, ending with the tagline “Your first love wants you back.”

“I chose to be a part of this remarkable campaign not just because it spoke to my own love affair with nature, but also because it’s imperative to find a way to co-exist with nature so that this valuable and beautiful resource is protected, ” Chastain said in a press release. “I hope this film encourages everyone to rethink their relationship with the natural world around them.”

The spot, the second nature PSA featured here in two days, like Conservation International’s effort, sees The Nature Conservancy take a different approach emphasizing emotion.

“This is a departure for the Conservancy,” explains Jordan Peavey, marketing director for The Nature Conservancy in California. “Instead of a typical PSA where we explain who we are sand what we do in a very intellectual way, we worked with Peyton, O Positive and Jessica Chastain to create an entirely different type of story. One we hope will intrigue and inspire new audiences to remember their love of nature and to get involved.” (more…)

TBWA Employs Star Voices for Conservation International

TBWA Media Arts Lab has launched a star-studded campaign for Conservation International, entitled “Nature is Speaking,” which employs celebrities as elements of nature delivering the message that environmental reform is an immediate concern.

Star voices include Julia Roberts as Mother Nature, Harrison Ford as The Ocean, Kevin Spacey as The Rainforest, Edward Norton as The Soil, Penelope Cruz as Water and Robert Redford as The Redwood. The campaign debuted at SXSW Eco and rolled out yesterday on YouTube, with the Mother Nature film highlighted on www.conservation.org. That nearly two-minute video functions as the campaign’s center point and introduction. Roberts, as Mother Nature, casts aside the notion that nature is something separate from people to be used. “I don’t really need people, but people need me,” Roberts intones over footage of natural marvels (bonus points for time-lapse footage of oyster mushrooms growing). She goes on to point out how the fate of humans is linked to nature. “When I thrive, you thrive,” she says. “When I falter, you falter — or worse.” She concludes, “One way or another, your actions will determine your fate. Not mine…I am prepared to evolve, are you?” It’s a powerful message, hammering home the immediacy of the issue with emotion.

It also functions as something of a rebranding for the environmental movement. As Dr. M. Sanjayan, Conservation International’s executive vice president and senior scientist points out in a press release, “The environmental movement has missed the mark when talking about nature because it tends to present nature as something that is separate from people. By making it clear that people need nature to survive, we are turning the conversation around and making the movement relevant to entirely new audiences.”

As the campaign continues, Conservation Internation will highlight a different film each week on www.conservation.org, with an accompanying post on its Human Nature blog. Next week will focus on The Ocean (voiced by Vice Chairman of Conservation International Harrison Ford), followed by The Rainforest (voiced by Spacey) and The Soil (Norton). We’ve included Ford and Spacey’s contributions after the jump. The campaign also includes a social extension, with HP promising to donate one dollar to Conservation International, up to one million, for every use of the #NatureIsSpeaking hashtag. (more…)

AMV BBDO Brings Back Mr. Bean for Snickers

AMV BBDO has a new series of ads for Snickers’ ongoing “You’re Not You When You’re Hungry” campaign, resurrecting Rowan Atkinson‘s Mr. Bean character.

In the longest of the three broadcast spots, Atkinson’s character finds himself jumping over rooftops with a group of ninjas, in a parody of kung fu movies like Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon. Only, while his colleagues glide gracefully from rooftop to rooftop, Mr. Bean has a bit more trouble and eventually finds himself crashing through the roof to an angry group of warriors below. At this point, one of his fellow ninjas tosses him a Snickers, saying “…you can’t concentrate when you’re hungry, eat a Snickers” and he’s back to his old self.

The character is a perfect fit for the popular “You’re Not You When You’re Hungry” approach, and the spots are all pretty entertaining. In the remaining pair (featured after the jump), Atkinson’s character practices nunchucks and kata, with less than stellar results. Atkinson’s character is such a good fit — he’s certainly one of the best celebrities featured in the ongoing campaign — that you almost wonder why he hasn’t been featured before. (more…)
