HelloFlo Hopes to Absorb New Clientele with Video Pitch

HelloFlo has nothing to do with Progressive Insurance or Binghamton alumnus and commercial superstar Flo. Considering that there aren’t too many other common uses for the word “flo,” what we are about to describe may be one of the strangest advancements in teen health education you’ve ever come across. Or it may be genius. I haven’t decided yet.

HelloFlo is a company that offers specific packages for women based on their individual menstruation needs. Each month, a woman can choose from the Low Flo, Medium Flo, or Heavy Flo packages that arrive at her doorstep without any awkward trips to the drugstore, assuming a cycle doesn’t start early. I’m not sure how practical it is to order these materials online, but if you are that uncomfortable buying tampons and pads in public, who am I to judge?

To reach out to younger girls, HelloFlo has recently released a promotional video, “The Camp Gyno,” a nearly two-minute comedic ad created by freelance copywriter Pete Marquis (who’s doing some work for W+K at the moment) and art director Jamie Mccelland (who once worked with the former at BBDO) with production duties going to Hayden 5. The video could’ve used some more direct mentions of the HelloFlo products, but it’s funny. If girls saying the word “vag” makes you uncomfortable, you might want to mute this. Also, watch out for Joan of Arc metaphors. 12 year-olds can be strange creatures.

Kmart, Draftfcb Wrangle Da Rich Kidzz for Back-to-School Track ‘My Limo’

For their new back-to-school campaign, Kmart and Draftfcb have wrangled Da Rich Kidzz, a rap group from Minneapolis aka the young geniuses behind “Hot Cheetos and Takis.”  In their new release, “My Limo,” Da Rich Kidzz give shout-outs to their school bus, their calculators, and of course, the first day of school. The chorus goes, “My school bus is my limo/I rule back to school with my cap on and my brim low.”

This spot comes after Kmart’s “Yo Mama” video, in which playground kids used the classic insult to compliment one another’s mother’s back-to-school shopping choices. The clincher: “Yo mama’s so fiscally responsible, she got all that on free layaway.” Previous to that, we got a pun-laden diptych in the form of “Ship My Pants” and “Big Gas Savings.”

If Da Rich Kidzz’ spot succeeds in making K-Mart a cool elementary school shopping destination, then power to them. Anything to make the first day of school less nerve-wracking. “Hot Cheetos & Takis” caught on with the young crowd, so maybe “My Limo” will too. But it’s also possible that, like Jay Z with Samsung, the commercial overload will leave a bad taste in consumers’ mouths. And if Da Rich Kidzz are really up and coming, this spot might arrest their creative momentum, forever branding them the K-Mart Kidzz.

F/Nazca Saatchi & Saatchi Skol Beer Design: Drink, Decorate, Sit On It

As part of their Skol Design line, the international beer brand and F/Nazca Saatchi & Saatchi invited renowned furniture designer Pedro Useche to create an armchair out of Skol bottles. Useche said, “Turning an armchair into a desirable object is not only about showing aesthetic attributes but most of all, making people feel comfortable when they sit on it.” The Skol bottles can spin, creating a massage sensation for each lucky occupant.

The video that accompanies Skol Design is in entirely in Portuguese, but if the lines were in English I can guess they would include gems like, “Here’s your house, in which you store the things you love…until your monstrous girlfriend arrives!” Said flower-loving, mirror-toting creature proceeds to completely rearrange the man cave. But! Justice is restored by Skol Designs, whose bottle lamps and clocks give the GF the chic feel she wants while still satisfying man’s need for beer.

Apparently the villainous girlfriend trope does well with Brazilian audiences, as F/Nazca Saatchi & Saatchi have used it before. I’ll admit the Skol chair is cute, but I’d much rather see a couple making sweet love on the rolling bottles than a wide-eyed girlfriend horror story.

Intel, Toshiba, Pereira & O’Dell Make Alien Movie to Sell Computer Processors

About a year ago, Intel and Toshiba partnered together with the help of Pereira & O’Dell to create “The Beauty Inside,” a so-called “social movie” that paired not-quite-movie stars Topher Grace and Mary Elizabeth Winstead as two young actors who can’t believe that this is where their careers have taken them thus far. The big budget online film was apparently effective enough at whatever it was trying to do to spawn a spiritual sequel, “The Power Inside,” starring Harvey Keitel as a guy you kind of feel sorry for until you you consider that he’s still finding work at his age.

As a press release tells us, the heavily product integrated plot will consist of “An alien invasion by a race of extraterrestrial moustaches and unibrows who take over the upper lips and eyes of people around the world. The main character is Neil, who together with his friends and the help of technology discovers his inner strength to defeat the moustache and unibrow invaders called Uricks. Intel-inspired Ultrabook™ devices by Toshiba play an important role in Neil’s journey of self-discovery.” We assume “inner strength” and “Intel-inspired Ultrabook™ devices by Toshiba” are pretty interchangeable in this scenario.

Similar to its predecessor, computer processor fans every can be part of the film by interacting with the protagonist via Facebook. Users can also upload a photo of themselves, edit that photo with a moustache and unibrow, and reach self-actualization after the process is completed. Credits after the jump.

Survive the Zombie Apocalypse with Hyundai’s ‘Walking Dead Chop Shop’

When zombies invade, some amass canned foods and hide in their cellars. Others create the ultimate zombie slaying machine and blast through the rubble to save mankind. For the latter breed, Hyundai and its agency partner-in-crime Innocean have invented the ultimate piece of fantasy fodder: “The Walking Dead Chop Shop.” Through the Chop Shop app, enthusiasts can use three different Hyundai cars as their base, then add vehicular accessories like a “horde plow” or two varieties of razor wire.

Host Veronica Belmont introduces the app and interviews people about their ideal car in “Conversations About a Zombie Survival Machine.” People (okay, men) seem to be filled with enthusiasm when they consider the question: Cattle Gun or Flamethrower?

In-app, they don’t have to make a choice, and aspiring zombie fighters can create as many machines as they want. One winning design will be transformed into the real thing. This does nothing for me, but judging by the 14,000 entries and level of appreciation in the videos, The Walking Dead fans will give this campaign legs.

Bookstore Chain Helps You Sleep With Your Favorite Book Characters

Pippi.jpg.jpg

Books? Actual printed books? People still buy those things? Apparently so. Otherwise this ACW Grey-created campaign for Israeli bookstore chain Steimatzky is a total waste of money.

Whether or not it’s wasted ad spend remains to be seen but one thing is clear; this is one very creative ad campaign. The work centers on print which carries the headline “The Right Book Will Always Keep You Company.” The visuals then convey the headline quite literally by placing characters from well known novels in bed with readers.

Yes, yes, we realize this could kick up quite a different set of scenarios given racier book titles but let’s keep things innocent for now.

Did You Know a Kleenex Can Hold 32 Eggs?

Second only to snow day, experiment day was the best in elementary school. We got to see the legendary combination of Mentos and Coca-Cola, drop eggs off of roofs, and bake cookies in solar ovens. The 90 minutes flew by.

Kleenex and Studiocom, the latter of which recently gave us the “Hand Washing Station” for the Kimberly-Clark brand, channeled this concept into their latest campaign, proving Kleenex’s added strength and absorbency with Kleenex Xperiments. They challenged 100 elementary and middle schools across the country. 10 accepted, and 5 were featured in the resulting videos. I’m guessing these kids were stoked to have more than the usual one-per-unit experiment day. They came up with projects like the “Rolling Mucus Burst” and a “Slime Cannon.”

At Highland Oaks Middle School in Miami, FL the students piled egg yolks onto tissues, comparing Kleenex and “Brand X.” Brand X broke after 8 yolks, while Kleenex withstood the weight of 32 yolks. That’s a lot of representative mucus.

It’s clear that the kids involved in these projects had fun being inventive, and (perhaps due to the brand’s selectivity) their experiments showcased Kleenex’s upgrade. A good time was had by all, and I bet–at the very least–when these kids grow up to be parents, they’ll remember their results and buy Kleenex, not Brand X.

Let’s Celebrate National Hot Dog Day with Schweigert Meats

Minnesota Twins fans don’t have much to cheer about these days. Their team is in 4th place in the AL Central, and they have a new outdoor stadium, which is problematic when you remember that playing baseball outdoors in Minnesota may not be fun in April or September. But, there is temporary relief. Today is National Hot Dog Day – I didn’t know, either – and Schweigert Meats, which produces the official hot dog of the Twins, has used the special occasion to release a couple of short video spots that show how the brand’s meat is “overly uncomplicated.” The brand is opting for a tongue-in-cheek tone with the videos and slogan as the campaign expands over the next few months with digital, print, and TV ads in the extended Minnesota region.

The campaign comes from Austin-based Proof Advertising and seems to appeal to a certain Northern blue-collar rural population that may find humor in the soft irony of things that are overly uncomplicated. But when it comes to Minnesota Twins advertising, Proof and Schweigert will have to step up their collective game to surpass the ability of the dandruffless Joe Mauer. Credits after the jump.

Team One Declassifies More of ‘The Bureau: XCOM Declassified’

In April, we covered the first piece of ambiguous viral ad content for The Bureau: XCOM Declassified, a 2K Games and 2K Marin video game. We’re back to report another promo, titled “Orbit & The Asteroid,” and produced by Team One. This 90-second spot isn’t any less ambiguous than the first ad, most of it about a 1960s era creepy clown television show and the young boy who watches it. According to the creators, there are a number of easter eggs that contain clues for the future of the video game series. The game won’t be released until August 20, which means there are four weeks left for more curious marketing spots, creepy clowns and all. Credits after the jump.

Lexus, ATTIK Combine Kaleidoscope, Cirque du Soleil for Interactive Music Video

Today, Lexus joins Kanye West on the interactive music video bandwagon. To promote the 2014 Lexus IS sport sedan, ATTIK and Blueyed Pictures created “Amazing Mix,” a surprisingly cool interactive adscape with Cirque du Soleil characters, red birds, and kaleidoscopic effects. Site visitors can type any key (or combination thereof — try “LEXUS” for a special show) to make a mix of these effects, then submit the result for a chance to win tickets to the 2014 Pebble Beach Food and Wine Festival, hotel stay at the event and $2,000, or a $500 cash prize.

Like with their Instagram film campaign, this is a step in the right direction for the automaker, though they didn’t get every aspect right. The music that backs Amazing Mix is a weird, blank James Bond knockoff, while the site that surrounds the scene is remarkably 2006. If Lexus wanted an immersive, individualized experience, they should have placed the mix on its own, minimalist page. Also, who are they targeting here? Middle-aged foodies who find Internet oddities amusing? That seems the only logical conclusion when the related prize is tix to the Pebble Beach Food and Wine Festival. If they’re going for young car owners (which they should be, with the tech and art angle), then that destination isn’t exactly enticing. Make the message more cohesive, and get us to XOXO, or Electric Zoo.

ASICS, Vitro Taunt SoCal with Imposing Wooden Horse

Ahh, nothing like a day of summer respite on San Diego’s Imperial Beach…the sun, the sand, the waves, the–oh shit, what the hell is that?! Well, it’s not quite a Trojan horse reenactment mind you, but this little scene basically played out on July 12 at said location. Why? Well, it’s part of an effort from hometown agency Vitro and longtime client ASICS that basically aims to get people’s asses in shape.

The parties involved trotted out a 16-foot-tall wooden horse that actually doubles as a personal trainer–complete with rope climb, pull-up bar, Olympic rings and more–and dishes out prizes to those taking part. Since crashing the San Diego beach party, the fitness-focused beast, which is part of ASICS’ “Next Epic Challenge” effort, has veered its way north to Los Angeles, where it planted itself in front of the Staples Center during the ESPY Awards on Wednesday evening (see below). Next up to bat on the horse’s SoCal tour is a week-long stop at the ASICS World Series of Beach Volleyball, which kicks off Monday. Not sure how this effort measures up to Vitro’s other interesting campaigns for the brand over the years, but we do agree that is as good as any other kick in the ass to get our summer figure in shape.

Zoosk, C+K Unleash ‘Heart Friend’ for Love Advice

In early June, San Fran-based Camp + King took over as the first AOR for the mobile dating site Zoosk. Seven weeks later, we herald the return of Heart Friend, the chatty heart-shaped mascot who is now doling out dating advice for inquiring users. Zoosk asked its users to post questions on Facebook, and then the Zoosk team selected the best posts for our little buddy, Heart Friend.

Each week, Heart Friend will answer one question by video for the site’s YouTube channel. This week: what to wear on a first date. Heart Friend does some rambling about men being bulls and then goes into an awkward aside about a red dress. Heart Friend has a man’s voice, but then shows up wearing a dress, which is supposed to make you laugh, I think? Cupid must already be under contract elsewhere. Credits after the jump.

IFC Promotes ‘Comedy Bang Bang’ as ‘The Ultimate Comedy Fantasy’

As mentioned, IFC is marketing the new season of original series Comedy Bang Bang as “the ultimate comedy fantasy.” In the video spot, hosts Reggie Watts and Scott Aukerman bounce along in a psychedelic van that runs on autopilot, produces a stewardess proffering pillows, and plays the radio (“Come Back,” by The J Geils Band). Watts and Aukerman exchange lines in their usual cheerful deadpan until their chariot announces the start of the new season.

The accompanying poster features Watts riding a centaur that has Aukerman’s head, and a background similar to a poster you probably bought from the book fair in fifth grade.

Though not especially enticing, the idea is cute and fans of Comedy Bang Bang will continue watching regardless. For newbies, the trailer for Season 1 gives better evidence of a show worth checking out.

If Bottles Could Talk: Keep America Beautiful Personifies Recycling

The press release for the new 60-second recycling spot from Keep America Beautiful, the Ad Council, and Periera & O’Dell states that the average American generates 4.4 pounds of trash per day, but only recycles 35% of that output. It’s unclear whether that means 35% of all recyclable trash is properly recycled rather than 35% of all trash, but the creators of the campaign don’t seem too concerned with stats. After all, people probably won’t respond to numbers.

Periera & O’Dell have decided to redirect the campaign with an emotional tilt, turning an empty plastic bottle into a protagonist that thinks and talks – through voice-over, thankfully. The result is a corny, yet necessary plea to viewers who should be recycling more. Credits after the jump.

Here’s a PlayStation Ad for Winning Stuff Seen in a Different PlayStation Ad

During the NBA Finals last month, PlayStation debuted a new mini-film from BBH NY titled “Greatness Awaits” which featured a wide array of game characters and a whimsical narrator talking sternly to the camera (much like in this 2009 spot BBH NY did for Johnnie Walker). With over 5 million YouTube plays, the big budget ad was hailed as a mild success, falling somewhere between “Hedgehog Reacts to Fart” and “One Direction Crash Barbie’s Party! 1D Dolls Party All Night! OMG !.::Original Video::.

To the untrained eye, it would appear that the spot’s success was owed to its subtle nods to some of PlayStation’s biggest titles paired with the sort of over-the-top visual effects that gamers subsist upon. However, any true gamer knows that the ad’s success is owed predominantly to the elaborate costuming employed, causing PlayStation to make a second ad in order to offer the costumes as prizes of some sort. Yes, it’s an ad for an ad, or “Adception” if you will.

Anyway, gamers can bid of the costumes from the spot using trophy points or something that they earn by being good at video games. Then everyone will play dress-up and have a great time. Learn more at bidforgreatness.com and view credits after the jump.

Hornitos Tequila Says Choose Your Shots Carefully

As the actors speak their lines in this ad for Hornito’s Tequila from La Comunidad Miami, all I hear is “Blah blah blah. Blah blah.” There must have been some problem with the bar bathroom that day, because every man on set looks like he’s experiencing the demi-anguish of needing to pee. “Tequila shots, please,” the bearded one says with a wince. “Which tequila?” The bartender responds, equally awkward. “Doesn’t matter, any tequila,” beard says. Then we’re whisked through various situations in which one would never say, “Doesn’t matter…”

“Doesn’t matter, any haircut,” leaves the men with patchy heads. “Doesn’t matter, any tattoo,” renders one with cat whiskers and another with a tea cup forehead tat. We get it: direction is important in life, why leave your tequila choice up to someone else?

I’m all for the promotion of quality, but in this case, it seems a bit off-track. If Hornitos is “not just any tequila,” then it shouldn’t be just a shot. A good tequila shot will come with salt, lime, and a set of fun friends. Branding and, frankly, taste, doesn’t matter. Hornitos would be better off promoting adventure, a theme they’ve already begun with their tagline: Grab Life by the Hornitos.

Dickies Shows Off Blue Collar Pants

The construction man in the new Dickies spot produced by Seattle-based agency Creature is actually wearing a blue-collared shirt, a level of detail that could’ve been overlooked, especially in an ad for pants. We never see the man’s face, but we can assume he likes to wear Dickies khakis to the construction site and Real. Comfortable. Jeans. at home. He eats bacon and eggs for breakfast, probably has two kids and a young wife, and works hard every day. He’s undoubtedly American, might even wear stars and stripes boxers. If a time machine zapped him back to the 1950s, he wouldn’t skip a beat.

All of my assumptions are based on this 30-second spot, which uses quick cuts and sharp noises as fodder for a charmingly patriotic tone. The only word of dialogue, “Daddy,” is spoken when the construction man’s son jumps on his leg when he gets home from work. The ad is the much-subtler cousin to the Dodge Ram farmer commercial from the Super Bowl, selling the blue-collar image to the everyman, not just the everymen who live in red states. Target, Deutsch LA Launch Four-Day Interactive College Experience

To showcase their back-to-school dorm room wares, Target and Deutsch LA have built Bullseye University, a 4-day interactive installation housing social media stars such as actor/musician Chester See and Jenn Im of Clothes Encounters. Online visitors can see live-streams of the University’s inhabitants and then click to purchase the items in each of their rooms. The Bullseye U site also hosts back to school-centric giveaways and events like a Ben and Jerry’s milkshake dunk tank, which starts at 10am PST today by the way.

As a preteen who once waited with bated breath for the newest Pbteen catalogue, I can imagine getting into this scheme as a college freshman. Especially if I was already a follower of the social media celebs involved, Target’s campaign would play to my college fantasies. Alas, we all know the truth is less colorful and more drinking-oriented, but Bullseye University’s version lets us run wild with creative, Internet-savvy roommates and purple throw pillows.

Kleenex Hand Towels Are Clean, Brooklyn People Learn

To demonstrate the purpose of a Kleenex Hand Towel, the brand set up a free handwashing station in Carroll Park, Brooklyn. They provided people with two drying options: a “sketchy” cloth towel and a dispenser filled with Kleenex Hand Towels. Studiocom and director Paul Iannacchino (of the original Coke Happiness Machine) then filmed a video in which people look dubiously at the dirty cloth towel and joyously wipe their hands on Kleenex’s offering.

The opening shot of babies swinging is adorable, and a hands-on approach is smart, but all the Purell-squirting people who are now tempted to use Kleenex Hand Towels should know that the video is set to a soundtrack of trees crying. The wail is just indiscernible to the human ear.

Honda Test-Drives Social Media Sharing with #WantNewCar

Do you hate your car? Do you want to let the world know how frustrated you are driving around in a jalopy that is beyond repair? Honda can help – sort of. For the rest of today, Honda will be tweeting back Vine videos at unhappy drivers who post #WantNewCar on Twitter. The Twitter/Vine combo, developed by the automaker’s longtime agency RPA, is part of Honda’s Summer Clearance Sales Event, and is meant to provide some catharsis to drivers even though there aren’t any discounts or financial incentives for using the hashtag. There probably should be.

If you watch the promo clip above, you’ll see what it looks like when brands use social media for the sake of using social media rather than really committing to interacting with consumers on various social platforms.Take KFC and their annoying, yet memorable, #IAteTheBones campaign. It’s made to go viral and is primarily identifiable to KFC and no other brand. On Twitter, KFC offers followers free merchandise and deals related to the hashtag on a regular basis. Honda is only responding for one day. Even though Honda’s hashtag is much more relatable (one could argue it’s too generic) the execution feels unsure of itself, just like a teenage driver getting behind the wheel for the first time.
