F/Nazca Saatchi & Saatchi Restages Classic Photos for Leica

Here’s the second high-minded short film promoting a camera company that we’ve received today.

This one, created by Saatchi & Saatchi’s Brazilian wing F/Nazca, hypes camera maker Leica on its 100th anniversary by recasting some of the past century’s most memorable images and suggesting that they wouldn’t have come to be if not for the innovations sparked by that company.

Key line: “We didn’t invent photography…but we invented PHOTOGRAPHY” (emphasis ours).

It’s a bold claim backed up by an elaborate restaging of 35 “iconic” photos. We didn’t recognize all of them (which is shameful because we majored in studio art), but Eddie Adams’ “Saigon Execution” and a few more obvious entries like the John/Yoko portrait do stand out. Something tells us our readers will score better on the unofficial quiz.

The specific purpose of the film is to promote the brand’s store/gallery in Sao Paulo, but not its new “brilliant, crazy camera you cannot afford.

F/Nazca Saatchi & Saatchi Launches Erroneously Named ‘Stay Apes’ Campaign for Operation Smile

Sao Paulo-based F/Nazca Saatchi & Saatchi’s new integrated campaign for NGO Operation Smiles, “Stay Apes,” reminds us that “the act of sharing is what helped us evolve as a species.”

Operation Smile has worked in Brazil since 1997 and performed reconstructive surgery for cleft lip on over 5,600 needy children. But now, the org depends exclusively on local contributions and has apparently fallen on hard times.

That’s where “Stay Apes” comes in. F/Nazca Saatchi & Saatchi executive creative director Eduardo Lima hopes the effort will “remind people, especially non-donors, that the act of sharing is what helped us evolve as a species and should never be ignored.”

The spot was inspired by a Duke University study exploring the ancestral nature of empathy. It shows a monkey deciding to share its food with another monkey that it has never met before. Text saying “We were once all apes. Those were the days.” pops up, before directing viewers to give to NGO Operation Smile.

It’s an interesting approach to promote the act of sharing. There is one major flaw with the title of the spot, however: monkeys are not apes. We get it, though. “Stay primates” just doesn’t have the same ring to it. Credits after the jump.

F/Nazca Saatchi & Saatchi Skol Beer Design: Drink, Decorate, Sit On It

As part of their Skol Design line, the international beer brand and F/Nazca Saatchi & Saatchi invited renowned furniture designer Pedro Useche to create an armchair out of Skol bottles. Useche said, “Turning an armchair into a desirable object is not only about showing aesthetic attributes but most of all, making people feel comfortable when they sit on it.” The Skol bottles can spin, creating a massage sensation for each lucky occupant.

The video that accompanies Skol Design is in entirely in Portuguese, but if the lines were in English I can guess they would include gems like, “Here’s your house, in which you store the things you love…until your monstrous girlfriend arrives!” Said flower-loving, mirror-toting creature proceeds to completely rearrange the man cave. But! Justice is restored by Skol Designs, whose bottle lamps and clocks give the GF the chic feel she wants while still satisfying man’s need for beer.

Apparently the villainous girlfriend trope does well with Brazilian audiences, as F/Nazca Saatchi & Saatchi have used it before. I’ll admit the Skol chair is cute, but I’d much rather see a couple making sweet love on the rolling bottles than a wide-eyed girlfriend horror story.
