Facebook Ad Juggernaut Rolls On Amid Mega-Deals For WhatsApp, Oculus VR
Posted in: UncategorizedAmid a big quarter of deals and potential distraction, Facebook is showing that its core business — advertising — is still very much on track.
The social network’s blockbuster acquisitions of WhatsApp for $19 billion and Oculus VR for $2 billion in February and March, taken together with its purchase of Instagram two years ago, make it evident that Facebook wants to be the Procter & Gamble of social.
The company is also investing in standalone products, like Messenger and Paper, in preparation for a future when social-networking habits have shifted and people check their Facebook feeds less. But what’s funding those ambitious bets is the social network’s ad business, which continues to grow robustly and become ever more mobile in tandem with how Facebook users access the service.
Surprise, iPhone Sales Still Strong As Apple Beats Estimates
Posted in: UncategorizedThis was meant to be Apple’s death toll. The hardware giant was widely expected to post its first decline in revenues in 11 years today, as rivals like Samsung expanded and smartphone sales in the U.S. show signs of saturation.
But with its second quarter fiscal earnings, the Cupertino company silenced its critics.
Apple posted revenues of $45.6 billion and a quarterly net profit of $10.2 billion, and set sales records across several emerging markets. Analysts surveyed by Thomson Reuters pegged revenues at $43.54 billion. On January 27th, Apple projected revenue between $42 billion and $44 billion for the quarter, following its pattern of setting a low bar and beating it.
Would You Recognize a Loved One Dressed Like the Homeless? These People Didn’t
Posted in: Uncategorized
Most city dwellers tend to avoid eye contact with the homeless, a fact that made one advocacy group wonder: Would you recognize your own relatives if they were living on the street?
New York City Rescue Mission partnered with agency Silver + Partner for a hidden-camera stunt that filmed people as they walked past loved ones dressed to look homeless. Later, the passersby were shown video footage of themselves walking past their relatives without a second glance.
As you'd probably expect, no one recognized their family members. One woman even walked right past her mom, uncle and aunt.
The stunt doesn't lead to any emotional breakdowns or similar histrionics, which is somewhat refreshing at a time when "gotcha" videos focus so hard on over-the-top reactions and immediate life-changing self-reflection. But the unwitting participants clearly feel ashamed of their oversight.
Director Jun Diaz from production house Smuggler tells Fast Company that one person who was filmed asked not to be included in the final video "because they couldn’t handle the fact that they walked by their family."
On a related website, MakeThemVisible.com, the rescue mission further humanizes the needy by sharing photographs of real homeless New Yorkers, smiling while sharing their personal passions and hobbies.

Dr Pepper Snapple Group Trims Marketing Budget
Posted in: UncategorizedPresident-CEO Larry Young also highlighted marketing efficiency during a conference call with analysts. “Overall, our first quarter advertising generated almost two billion targeted impressions and through our continued focus on marketing return on investment, we grew GRP’s by 30% in the quarter with media spend up only 10%,” he said.
Dr Pepper Snapple works with agencies including Deutsch, McGarry Bowen, Initiative and Code and Theory.
Still, the decline in marketing spend comes as rivals Coca-Cola and PepsiCo continue to boost budgets. Coca-Cola, in fact, recently said it would increase media spending and brand-building initiatives by up to $1 billion by 2016.
AMC Demotes Mad Men’s Peggy And Joan to Celebrate Secretary’s Day
Posted in: UncategorizedIn celebration of what Mad Men would, of course, lovingly call Secretary’s Day, AMC is out with a Twitter image featuring Peggy and Joan who once were, but no longer are, secretaries on the series.
It’s a curious move but hey, they’re bigger stars and much more well known then the current stars on the show so it’s all good.
Wish your secretary a Happy #AdministrativeProfessionalsDay from our office to yours! #SecretarysDay #MadMen pic.twitter.com/oObkGUdgsd
