Black Wieden+Kennedy Employee Critiques Agency’s #BlackLivesMatter Statement

brandon burns 2Wieden+Kennedy’s decision to replace its homepage with a statement on the #BlackLivesMatter movement last week has earned attention and/or praise from quite a few observers and media outlets including our parent company, AdAge and even the Washington Post. This despite the fact that the agency never promoted or discussed it directly.

The message, which started as an internal email written by a black employee, remains on the site as of this post after Hill Holliday removed a similar statement from its home page.

One observer, however, is not quite as impressed.

Brandon Burns is a copywriter and experience designer who has worked for Leo Burnett, MRM//McCann, Proximity BBDO and, for the past year, Wieden+Kennedy Portland.

Today he published a must-read Medium story in which he simultaneously praises W+K’s move and claims that every single agency he worked for previously “engaged in actions that broke the federal laws prohibiting discrimination in the workplace.”

What does that mean?

“…while my personal career has been net-positive, along the way I have lost jobs to objectively less qualified candidates, I have fought, and won, a case of racial-based wage depression, and I’ve even had to report a manager to HR for harassment, only to be fired by the accused 24 hours later.”

Burns then asks a big question: will W+K’s tacit support of #BlackLivesMatter change the fact that the vast majority of its leaders, creative and otherwise, happen to be both white and male?

Those looking for a straight-up takedown will be disappointed. Burns acknowledges the agency’s own efforts to address this discrepancy, writing:

“As a hiring manager, I worked very closely with the in-house recruiting team; I am well aware of their valiant efforts to find new talent of all races and genders. Yet, nevertheless, when they share the portfolios of the best candidates with the Creative Directors?—?93% of whom are white males?—?it is, time and again, the white male candidates who are pursued and hired.”

Burns very clearly states that no one at W+K has exhibited racist tendencies to his knowledge. But he also names humanity’s inherent tribal sensibilities as the reason for the ad industry’s overwhelming whiteness, writing, “The creative director always has a reason why he hired, promoted or gave preferential treatment to someone who happens to look like him.”

He goes on to suggest several ways in which any given agency might move from sentiment to action on the diversity front, listing blind portfolio reviews, regular standardized performance reviews, and universal metrics for raises and promotions. His main idea is that agencies define “success” more objectively in order to avoid the sort of (often unconscious) traits that lead white men to hire and promote other white men.

Burns’ post may be the best-written take on the diversity issue that we’ve read, at least in recent weeks. It ends by encouraging white people to simply try and understand minority perspectives rather than reverting to “Wait, you think I’m a racist?!”

A W+K spokesperson has not gotten back to us about the story, just as the agency declined to comment on the site itself.

W+K Explores Virtual Reality for Chrysler

Heard of Oculus Rift but still not sure what it is, exactly? Now you can become a little more familiar with the experience thanks to Wieden+Kennedy Portland.

But first, this September entry from W+K for client Chrysler is less an ad than a short “making of” documentary about the company’s interactive factory tour project:

New work after the jump.

W+K, Sony Focus on the Products

Wieden+Kennedy’s latest spot for Sony, titled “Script to Screen,” has already earned more than a million YouTube views since its debut this weekend. But it’s new to us, and it’s the opening of the Fall edition of the brand’s ongoing “Be Moved” campaign, which started during the Golden Globes in January and continued in February with a profile of the New Jersey man behind “the world’s largest model railroad.

“Script to Screen” is a bit less…quirky than that offering:

In case you missed it, the point is that Sony doesn’t just make movies, music and games — they also make the tools.

Since this work is all about the products, we have two product-specific spots after the jump.

W+K Keeps Things Short for Gap

Last week we met Wieden+Kennedy’s new work for Gap in the form of family-centric spots directed by Francis Ford Coppola’s daughter Sofia (we were partial to the super-awkward mistletoe scene).

The ads were very different than the darker, more abstract work by David Fincher — and the agency’s latest additions to the brand’s holiday campaign are even more unusual. The theme of the “Play Your Stripes” series is clothing items recast as musical instruments.

As W+K explains it, the agency “re-imagined” the client’s holiday catalog and made a short film for each of ten individual products, tying it to sound in some way. Here’s the first one, “Hi-5 Machine,” with the tagline “These girls mittens hi-5 each other whether they want to or not.”

While these ads won’t air on TV, Gap is promoting them on its social channels and sending them to various music pubs.

Nine more gallery-ready shorts after the jump.

W+K New York and Jordan Go West Looking for Sketch Comedy

Here’s some new work from Wieden+Kennedy New York for a client listed as “Jordan” (note the lack of “Air” there).

The story: Blake Griffin and Chris Paul, both of whom happen to play for the LA Clippers and both of whom happen to be launching new shoes around the same time, have scored a couple of sketch comedy shorts on Adult Swim. Developed with the co-creator of the much-missed Chappelle Show, the project “BGCP3TV in HD” is a promotion for Jordans and “a shout out to the city of Los Angeles.”

The first episode aired several hours before our dog rudely woke us up this morning:

So they can’t even operate without their shoes. Since these episodes aren’t technically ads, do we call them “branded content” or “sponsored content?”

W+K Chases the Horizon for Citizen Watches

Today the Tokyo and Amsterdam offices of Wieden+Kennedy debuted the first international campaign for client Citizen Watch, which is not a neighborhood safety group but a producer of premium timepieces.

The five-minute spot, which stars photographer Simon Roberts and ex-NATO pilot Jonathan Nicol in an attempt to literally “chase the sunset across the Earth’s time zones”, justifies use of the phrase “short film”:

The team appears to have succeeded in “steal[ing] one night from the planet” and taking a series of sunset images fit to rival anything on your friends’ Instagram accounts (unless they happen to live at the Arctic Circle).

W+K and Drew Brees Interview a Robot for Old Spice

Here’s a long and unusual one from Wieden+Kennedy to promote client Old Spice.

The agency first introduced its “Mandroid” character in a couple of spots this summer, and he plays an even larger role in this one, which is ostensibly an “interview” on a retro sports talk show:

It’s nothing if not awkward; we do like the New Orleans-appropriate “jazz breakdown” that happens around the 4:00 mark.

The finale is also amusing, though you may note that Brees’ pass doesn’t quite hit its target.

W+K Tokyo and Nike Just Want to Have Fun

Here’s an energetic spot to end a short week: South Korean high schoolers love sports just as much as all teens, but the press release tells us that “many barriers” like school and family responsibilities prevent them from having a good time.

The team at Wieden+Kennedy Tokyo took to the streets to gauge their sentiments and came up with the tagline, “When Fun Wins, You Can’t Lose.”

The resulting ad stars “Korean football legend Ji-Sung Park, rising tennis player Duck-Hee Lee, K-Pop superstar Taeyang from the group BIG BANG” and a bunch of kids who just want to enjoy their soccer/baseball/basketball/running and dancing.

Don’t forget the dancing.

We’re still partial to the glow-in-the-dark basketball dude.

We Hear: W+K Signs S7 Airlines

While the agency’s official comment is “no comment”, an anonymous tipster can confirm today that Wieden+Kennedy‘s newest client is S7, formerly known as Siberia Airlines.

Never heard of it? It’s the largest domestic airline in Russia, or the equivalent of our own Southwest to Aeroflot’s United.

We’re told that the company, which previously stuck with Russia-based agencies like Leo Burnett Moscow for its advertising needs (a Burnett campaign won two awards at Cannes this year), wanted to expand and go with an overseas shop in order to win greater market share as more and more Russians travel for both business and pleasure.

W+K–which also serves as AOR for Delta–beat three other agencies on the pitch.

Some odd S7 ads after the jump.

WPP’s TAXI Begins Brewing New Relationship with Maxwell House

The year was 2010 when WPP rolled out the red carpet and doled out the cash for yet another advertising agency — TAXI.

The Toronto-based shop was bought to stand alone within the group and grow its own offices rather than merging with other units, according to Y&R Brands CEO Peter Stringham.

Apparently that was a good strategy: TAXI just wrangled itself a strong cup of the Kraft Foods empire with Maxwell House. Previously, the account was with W+K Portland.

The change comes only a couple of months after the coffee brand launched a new campaign called “Say Good Morning to a Good Day“; mcgarrybowen ran the account prior to W+K.

Seems that “the last drop” arrives more quickly each year. Stay tuned.

Apple Officially Takes More Ads In-House

The strained relationship between Apple and TBWAChiatDay has reached a new stage.

Two months after unflattering email exchanges between Apple’s head of marketing and TBWA’s Media Arts Lab surfaced as part of the extended Apple vs. Samsung copyright battle, Bloomberg was the first outlet to report that the company will now be creating more (if not all) of its TV spots in-house.

An Apple spokesperson reminded Bloomberg that the internal team, which “includes at least two people Apple hired away from Media Arts Lab”, is responsible for recent spots like this one:

The shift has been in the works since early 2013, with Apple deciding to take control of more production duties and build up its own team rather than search for a new agency.

Other outside hires include at least two higher-ups from Wieden+Kennedy: Tyler Whisnand and Bill Davenport.

No one at MAL–which recently went through some staffing changes of its own–offered a comment to Bloomberg, so the current and future status of the partnership remains unclear. 72andSunny CEO John Boiler did weigh in, however, calling the company’s decision to hire from within MAL “…an indication of some seriously broken trust.”

Layoffs at W+K Portland

We’ve confirmed, via agency spokesperson, that a series of layoffs officially hit the Portland offices of Wieden+Kennedy today.

In summary: after parting ways with a few unspecified clients, W+K had to make some unfortunate decisions regarding the size of its staff.

Agency reps could not comment on totals or titles, but several anonymous tipsters told us the number of layoffs was greater than 30 and that it included more than one Creative Director.

Updates if/when we receive them.

Nike dá tratamento gamer a #RiskEverything

Vale o play.

W+K Stoke World Cup Excitement, National Pride with ‘I Believe’

W+K have just unveiled their latest FIFA World Cup 2014 spot for ESPN, raising excitement for the event with just about 2 months left until it kicks off in Brazil on June 12th.

Entitled “I Believe,” the 60-second spot attempts to pump up Americans for the event, which has gained popularity nationally in recent years. Shots of Team USA in action and crowd footage are accompanied by a chant of “I believe that we can win.” Given the odds against the American squad, “I believe that we can make it past group stage” seems a bit more realistic. Around the 53 second mark of the ad, a Nike “Just Do It” stadium billboard is clear in the background of the in-game action. Given that Nike is (of course) a W+K client, we can’t help but wonder if this was an intentional (and rather slick) move on W+K’s part.
