In Post-AOR Era, Mondelez Tries Multi-Agency ‘Project Sprout’

At Mondelez International, the agency-of-record model is dying, if not dead already. Dana Anderson, the snack-and-candy marketer’s senior VP of marketing strategy and communications, said as much last month in a Wall Street Journal opinion piece, calling the AOR approach “no longer the pathway to Oz for clients or agencies.”

But what, exactly, is on the other side of the rainbow for the maker of big brands including Oreo, Trident and Cadbury?

A new global marketing experiment called “Project Sprout” offers some clues. The project — which Mondelez is quietly testing in Nashville, Tenn.; Austin, Texas; Brazil; Canada; and Turkey — involves working with multiple agencies at once, while using small teams, accelerated timelines and putting an emphasis on linking advertising to short-term sales results.

“At a board meeting yesterday evening, RadiumOne’s board of directors voted to terminate the employment of Gurbaksh Chahal as CEO and Chairman of the company,” the company said in a statement confirming a report by Re/code. “Bill Lonergan, the company COO, will take over as CEO of the Company immediately. What You Need to Know About China’s Rapidly Growing BlueFocus

BlueFocus has huge ambitions. It aims to increase its revenue tenfold within 10 years. The company also wants 33% of its business by then to come from outside China.

“They’re not looking to become WPP overnight. They’re looking for the right investments around the world to expand their capabilities,” said Greg Paull, Hong Kong-based principal of agency-management consultancy R3 Worldwide.

About half the company’s business today is digital, and BlueFocus hopes to expand that to two-thirds. It has a broad vision of what that means, and it includes social media, big data and e-commerce. The company last year rebranded its flagship agency, BlueFocus PR Consulting, as BlueDigital; the PR agency ranks No. 9 in the world.

M&A in Adland: One Big Deal. Scores of Smaller Deals

Publicis Chairman-CEO Maurice Levy told analysts April 17: “I have to say again and again and again that I’m confident that the deal will go through.” But Omnicom President-CEO John Wren said on an April 22 earnings call: “Given the proposed merger’s complexity and open issues, at this point it’s not practical to predict exactly when the transaction will close.”

Buying and selling

Revenue, Staffing, Stocks and Digital Show Growth for Agencies in 2014 Report

Ad-agency employment is at its highest level since 2001, agency stocks have hit all-time highs and U.S. ad spending this year is forecast to grow at its fastest clip since 2004. It’s a good time to be in the agency game — as long as you’re connected to digital or a thriving discipline like experiential.

U.S. agency revenue increased 3.7% to $39.1 billion in 2013, record revenue but the slowest growth since the ad-market recovery began in 2010.

The growth rate is based on Ad Age DataCenter’s analysis of more than 900 agencies in the Agency Report. It’s in the range of stated U.S. organic growth of 2.9% at WPP; 3.7% at both Omnicom Group and Interpublic Group of Cos.; and North American organic growth of 4.7% at Publicis Groupe, which said U.S. organic growth was “above 5%.”

Burger King Resurrects Subservient Chicken

On Sunday it took out half-page ads in the vein of a missing persons bulletin, asking whether readers have seen the chicken. The ads appeared in the New York Times, the Houston Chronicle, the Los Angeles Times, the Chicago Tribune and others.

The chain has also revived the SubservientChicken.com website, although instead of a man-sized chicken ready to take orders, visitor there find an empty room with a couch and a message — in the style of a vintage Windows-style pop-up circa 2004: “Help, There’s a chicken on the loose and we are desperately trying to find him.” The site also includes photos of the mascot’s last known whereabouts, illustrated surveillance-style via security stills from convenience stores and parking garages. Consumers are asked to help find the chicken on digital and social media channels and to use the twitter hashtag #FindTheChicken.

Next Burger King plans to post a short movie on the site Wednesday at 9 a.m. ET, chronicling the rise and fall of internet celebrities, showing what happens to them when their 15 minutes of fame fades. The digital video, titled “TBD,” also features a cameo by actor Dustin Diamond, better known as the dorky Screech from “Saved by the Bell.” A range of creative executions are expected to follow.
