Modern Day Pinocchio Unknowingly Lies About Sexual Health for AIDES

From TBWA\Paris comes a new spot for AIDES which depicts a wooden man dry-humping some girl he picked up at a bar. Titled “Woody” (because PENIS BONERZ HAHAHAHA), the spot is a reminder to girls everywhere that the dude you meet out at the club might have AIDS or Herpes or something but might not know it. Wrap that rascal, as the kids say. Rubber up! (As I say.)

As you may recall, AIDES is no stranger to provocative, weiner-laden advertising. Why just a few years ago they sent a CGI penis on vacation with the help of Goodby, Silverstein + Partners to remind us that you don’t know where that penis you’ve randomly encountered has been. It could be rubbing itself all over Aztec ruins for all you know.

On the same subject-ish, an aside: I attended a “Friendsgiving” party this past weekend where we all went around the room and said what we were thankful for. A rather intoxicated friend of mine stood up when it was his turn and announced loudly to the room, “You know, my penis has been a lot of places over the course of my life.” He then pointed to his girlfriend and said, “You’ve been the best!” Somehow, he managed not to get slapped. On that note, full super-French credits, and a making-of video, follow after the jump.

TV Cord-Cutting Could Still Be Worse

The top pay-TV companies lost a total of 75,000 video subscribers in the third quarter, triple the decline of 25,000 one year earlier, as digital alternatives and destructive incidents like Time Warner’s blackout of CBS took a toll. But in some ways the figures actually suggest a certain resilience.

Wall Street research firm MoffettNathanson said it’s surprising the latest decline wasn’t worse.

For one thing, there were 366,000 fewer new occupied dwelling units in the third quarter of 2013 than there were a year earlier, according to a research note from MoffetNathanson analyst Craig Moffett. “What is perhaps more interesting than the fact that pay TV declined is that it didn’t decline more than it did,” Mr. Moffett wrote.

Intel TV Service in Talks With New Suitor … for Use Outside the U.S.

John Malone’s Liberty Global, the European cable operator, is in talks to acquire Intel’s online pay-TV service under development, said three people with knowledge of the situation.

Mr. Malone would use Intel’s system outside the U.S., said one of the people, who asked not to be identified because the talks are private. London-based Liberty Global owns Virgin Media in the U.K., and operates in Germany, Belgium and elsewhere. Negotiations are early and could fall apart, said the people, who declined to comment on the price being discussed.

Liberty Global’s interest creates competition for the advanced set-top box being developed by Intel since at least early 2012. The chipmaker, which previously promised to offer service this year, wound up balking at making significant programming investments on its own, and began looking for partners. People with knowledge of the situation said last month that Verizon Communications was in talks to buy Intel’s project.

Ghostery Privacy Hack Yields New Tools to Monitor Ad Tracking

Despite a stream of revelations about National Security Administration data tracking, consumers in the U.S. haven’t exactly embraced online privacy tools.

Ghostery, a subsidiary of Evidon which offers a browser extension that exposes tracking technologies and allows people to opt-out from them, aims to change that.

The company corralled a roomful of coders tasked with crafting new tools that highlight digital data tracking on a recent Saturday in WeWork Lounge, a co-work space on the edge of New York City’s Chinatown.

Fã do Messi?

The Ad Revolution Goes Micro Local

If you still think you can build a breakthrough brand through interruptive messaging, another wake-up call is on the horizon. Recent reports suggest that Apple is developing software called iBeacon, which will allow its devices to communicate via indoor-mapping with Bluetooth Low Energy beacons within 150 feet. PayPal has announced an initiative with a technology so similar, it basically has the same name — Beacon.

This micro location technology will allow consumers to walk into retailers and have access via their mobile devices to unlimited information about products in the store. With this information, they will have a kind of x-ray vision, able to see through a product’s marketing, advertising and packaging. For some brands, this is a scary concept. For others, it provides an incredible opportunity to differentiate.

Consider a customer shopping for a new camera. Micro location technology will enable access to information on products up to 50 yards away. Let’s assume, in this example, that only two cameras being considered in the store. Both will have strong advertising and packaging and an enthusiastic salesperson. But, one enables the customer to hold up his phone, quickly and easily receive product specs, filter those specs based on his exact preferences, watch videos, download promotions and read reviews from photography aficionados. The other manufacturer offers no such information; consumers have to start searching in their mobile browsers to find out anything. The winner is clear. There’s no way that a great ad or shiny packaging can offset that amount of customized information.

Don’t Call Me CMO: Top Marketers Say Job Has Evolved Beyond Title

What’s in a name? If you are a chief marketing officer today, plenty. The job title means different things across companies and industries. And now some top execs are suggesting that the “marketing” moniker should be scrapped entirely as CMOs take on greater responsibilities.

Look no further than the largest annual meeting of the Association of National Advertisers, which was held in October and is called, ironically enough, the “Masters of Marketing” conference. “I wonder if in five to 10 years whether we should be called chief marketing officers anymore,” ConAgra Foods CMO Joan Chow said during a roundtable discussion at the event. “Consumers don’t like to be marketed to. We should be thinking of ourselves as chief value officers.”

In another presentation, General Electric CMO Beth Comstock said her job was as much a “chief growth officer as anything.” Likewise, Walmart CMO Stephen Quinn said that CMOs really need to be chief innovation officers.
