East vs. West

Intuition or Intellect?

From Adbusters #107: The Epic Story of Humanity: Part 1, Spring

ZHAO JI / CASPAR DAVID FRIEDRICH

Because in our culture we overvalue the intellect, we imagine that to become enlightened demands extraordinary intelligence. In fact, many kinds of cleverness are just further obscurations.

There is a Tibetan saying: “If you are too clever, you could miss the point entirely.” Patrul Rinpoche said: “The logical mind seems interesting, but it is the seed of delusion.” People can become obsessed with their own theories and miss the point of everything. In Tibet we say:

“Theories are like patches on a coat, one day they just wear off.”

MASP: Modigliani, Van Gogh, Renoir

The story behind a painting can be as fascinating as the painting itself. That’s what the ad and poster campaign created by DDB Brasil for MASP’s (São Paulo Museum of Art) guided tours shows.

The ad pieces use the comic books language to tell the real story of important paintings in the museum’s collection. The pieces, painted by masters such as Van Gogh, Renoir and Modigliani are shown as comics.

Each narrative emulates the respective artist’s style, as if it had been taken out of the artist’s sketchbook. Many frames were inspired by real paintings and sketches. The copy also makes historical references with real quotes from the authors and characters from the piece. “A painting is just a part of the story”, the campaign was designed to reach both laymen and those who already have an interest in the story of the arts.

The idea is to convey to both audiences that to admire a painting on the wall can be just a part of the full experience – and thus promote the Guided Tours service that features the detailed story of the paintings in MASP’s collection, the trajectory of their artists and the historical contextualization of each piece.

Six Things You Didn’t Know about Droga5 Creative Ted Royer

Ted Royer was recently appointed chief creative officer at Droga5 New York. Since the agency’s founding in 2006, he’s helped to lead much of its best known work, from celebrated efforts like Tap and Decoded, to more recent campaigns for clients like Coke Zero, New Museum and Prudential.

But it seems that the more colorful moments of his life happen outside the job. We chatted with him as part of Creativity’s continuing series of “Things You Didn’t Know” about the ad industry’s creative leaders. When it comes to unearthing some unusual traits, this one does not disappoint.

1. He got into advertising because of the TV show “Bewitched.” Darrin came home with an assignment to write an ad for Napoleon Soap. Of course the real Napoleon showed up and things got crazy. But Ted thought, Wait, that’s a job? Just writing ads?

Telemundo Partners With Ryan Seacrest and Donald Trump

Rival Univision gets much of its programming from Mexico’s media giant Grupo Televisa, but Spanish-language network Telemundo Media is looking to Ryan Seacrest and Donald Trump.

The slate of new shows announced at Telemundo’s upfront presentation on Tuesday night at Lincoln Center included “Duelo Musical: Super Estrella” (“Superstar Showdown”), a showdown between two different music stars each week who face off in four rounds of music-based games and sing-offs that the audience will vote on. The showdown will be produced in association with Ryan Seacrest Productions in the “American Idol” producer’s first foray into Spanish-language programming.

Telemundo, part of Comcast-owned NBC Universal, is also creating Miss Latina USA, a combination reality show and beauty pageant whose winner will go on to compete in the Miss Universe pageant. This will be the first time another U.S. contestant in addition to the official Miss USA pageant winner will be part of the Miss Universe competition. NBC co-owns the Miss Universe Organization with Donald Trump, and Miss Universe already airs on Telemundo as well as NBC.

O redesign do Google+

Durante sua conferência I/O para desenvolvedores nesta quarta-feira, o Google anunciou o redesign da rede social Google+, com 41 novas funções, e uma timeline dividida por colunas. Confira no vídeo acima.

Google+
