Wal-Mart In A Battle To Redefine Its Brand

Wal-Mart want to clear some things up. Hence, the launch of a new PR-driven site, TheRealWalmart.com and new TV spots that began airing on Saturday during the Kentucky Derby.

According to The Wall Street Journal, the campaign is the company’s first purely image-based ad push in several years.

WSJ also reports that Wal-Mart’s “energized differentiation,” an advertising term for the direction a brand is going based on consumer interest, loyalty and momentum, dropped 50% between 2011 and 2012 among college-educated adults.

That’s what allegations of bribery, poor global sourcing practices and low wages brings.

Barbara Andridge, 38, who has been working at a Placerville, Calif., Wal-Mart for nearly eight years and makes $12.15 an hour. She said she had to drop its health plan this year because she couldn’t afford the $18 weekly cost.

“I don’t want to see ads,” she said. “I want to see Wal-Mart provide decent wages, affordable health care and enough hours to feed my children.”

Beyond Leaning In: What I Learned on the Way to the C-Suite

It was in San Francisco in the 1990s, and my boss took me to lunch to ask if I was interested in becoming CEO of the agency office there. I replied that I had never thought of myself as a CEO of an agency and needed a day to consider it.

Can you imagine?

Here I was, at the agency for a year and a half, and not once had it occurred to me that I was capable of running the place. So when the offer came, it came from left field. I have to believe that reaction stemmed from being a female executive in a sea of not so many; a man in my position would likely have been expecting the top job since day one and when it was offered, taken it as his due.

Child-Abuse Ad Uses Lenticular Printing to Send Kids a Secret Message That Adults Can’t See

The ANAR Foundation, a Spanish child-advocacy organization, used lenticular printing in this powerful outdoor ad to send different messages to children and adults. Anyone under about 4-foot-3 sees bruising on the child's face in the poster, along with ANAR's hotline number and copy that reads, "If somebody hurts you, phone us and we'll help you." People taller than that—i.e., most parents—simply see the child without the bruise and the line, "Sometimes child abuse is only visible to the child suffering it." The metaphor embodied in the display is apt—the figurative differences in perception between abuser and abused here become literal. I'm glad they kept the concept and content simple, too; it makes the interactivity more immediate and less gimmicky. Ad agency: Grey Spain.

Samsung’s New Galaxy S4 Ad Strategy Is Same as the Old Strategy: Hammer Apple

Samsung’s is not finished comparing the Galaxy with Apple’s iPhone.

As the the debut ad for Samsung’s latest smartphone, the Galaxy S4, shows, the company is still acting like a challenger brand when it comes to its competition with Apple for the high-end smartphone market.

The ad — first shown last Thursday during an episode of “Conan” — depicts various grad party attendees using S4s much to iPhone owners’ amazement. When a young woman uses the S4’s near field communication (NFC) feature to share photos with a friend, for instance, an older woman next to her attempts to do the same with her iPhone. The younger woman quickly points out that iPhones lack the touch-sharing functionality, which causes the older woman’s husband to remark, “Some smartphones are smarter than other smartphones.”
