DDB California Names Todd Grantham President, CEO

DDB California has named Todd Grantham as the agency’s new president and CEO, based out of the agency’s San Francisco office, Adweek reports. Grantham fills the role vacated by Mike Harris in June.

Grantham arrives at DDB California from Goodby Silverstein & Partners, where he served as director of new business and associate partner. He originally arrived at Goodby back in 1996 and has held roles at the agency including  associate director of account management and managing director. Sprint Seeks New Lead Creative Agency

Sources told Adweek that Sprint is seeking a new lead creative agency.

According to the publication’s sources, the review will be focused on above-the-line marketing, most of which is spent on television. Sprint spends approximately $800 million on measured media annually. According to Adweek, it’s still unclear if the review also includes digital work, which is currently handled by DigitasLBi.

Sprint has a somewhat unusual history of agency relationships. In 2011, the company unexpectedly shifted its advertising duties from Goodby, Silverstein & Partners to a team consisting of various Publicis Groupe agencies, led by DigitasLBi, who worked in conjunction with Leo Burnett on broadcast advertising. However, last year Sprint assigned those duties to Figliulo & Partners, who created the recent “Framily” campaign. (With Sprint abandoning that plan, and now searching for a new agency, it seems the Frobinsons may have seen their moment pass.)

The move doesn’t exactly come as a surprise, given these comments made by Masayoshi Son, CEO of Sprint parent company Softbank:

“Sprint spends a large amount of money on advertising every year, but its effects have been almost negligible. I directed the Sprint executives to terminate all existing contracts with the company’s advertising agencies. We will shortly start from scratch on advertising, with new agents also making proposals.”

GSD&M Named Hampton Inn’s Creative Agency

Hampton Inn has named Austin-based agency GSD&M as its new creative agency, following a review, AdAge reports.

The three finalists in the review were revealed to be GSD&M, Chicago-based Cramer-Krasselt and Los Angeles-based David & Goliath. Incumbent agency Y&R Chicago participated in the initial stages of the review, which included six agencies but was not selected as a finalist, Hilton Garden Inn & Hampton Hotels Vice President, Global Brand Marketing Judy Christa-Cathey told AdAge. Y&R Chicago remains on the Hilton roster, however, via its recently-won DoubleTree duties.

Christa-Cathey explained that the brand chose GSD&M because it “wanted an agency that had a clear understanding of the Hampton Inn brand and what makes it special,” also citing the agency’s “strong consumer insights and strategy, fresh creative and problem-solving skills.”

A new campaign is expected in early 2015, which will be aimed at millenials and “celebrating Hampton’s culture and hospitality.” Hampton Inn spent approximately $23 million on national measured media last year, according to Kantar Media.

L.A. Clippers Launch Agency Review

In the wake of the Donald Sterling scandal, the Los Angeles Clippers are looking for a new agency to help them reposition the team’s brand, AdAge reports.

The team has launched a creative review, which is being led by Boston-based Pile & Co., with an eye toward Los Angeles-area agencies, according to sources familiar with the review. Irvine, California agency HeilBrice has been working with the Clippers since 1999, and it’s unclear whether they will defend in the review. A spokesman for the Clippers confirmed the review in AdAge, but didn’t offer any details, and executives at HeilBrice declined to comment to that publication.

In the RFP, the Clippers identify the need for an agency with experience “rebuilding an established, well-known brand,” language that insinuates the team is looking to distance itself from the Sterling scandal and reposition its brand with a fresh image. The team spent $433,500 in measured media last year, according to Kantar media.

Apple Hires Nike Social Chief as Digital Marketing Director

As 9To5Mac reported yesterday, Apple just gave its social media marketing department a big boost with the addition of Musa Tariq as its new head digital marketing director.

Tariq arrives at Apple from Nike, where he served as global senior director of social media and community since October, 2012. Before that, he was global director of social media, digital marketing, at Burberry — a position he held for about one year before jumping to Nike.

The hire follows Apple’s recent addition of a pair of Nike FuelBand engineers to work on its own wearable technology and continues Apple CEO Tim Cook’s penchant for poaching talent from Nike. Tariq also reported directly to Apple retail and online stores chief Angela Ahrendts while they were both at Burberry, where “he was instrumental in working with Ahrendts on growing Burberry’s global brand,” according to 9To5Mac.

Of course, this move also follows Apple’s recent decision to take more of its production work in-house. Some might see it as yet another step in the brand’s plan to take greater control over its own identity.

The New York Times Goes to Pot

Last week, The New York Times inspired a media ballyhoo when its editorial board asked the U.S. government to lift its ban on marijuana. Beyond inspiring the obvious headlines, that clarion call to legalize pot did something else — it opened the door for a newly formed industry to promote its wares with paid ads.

Leafly, the organization known as “Yelp for Weed”, walked right through those doors with a full-page spot by Heckler Associates of Seattle promoting its mission: to further related educational efforts under the tagline “Just Say Know.”

P&G Plans to Divest or Shed 90-100 of its Brands

Procter & Gamble disclosed in an earnings call this morning that it plans to divest or shed 90-100 of its brands, in an attempt to streamline and focus on its more successful brands.

“Less will be much more,” P&G CEO A.G. Lafley said. “We are going to create a faster growing, more profitable company that’s far simpler to operate.”

The announcement is the latest attempt by P&G to trim back, following the sale of P&G pet food brands Iams, Eukanuba and Natura to Mars Inc. for $2.9 billion in cash in April, and the sale of Pringles to Kellogg Co. for $2.7 billion in 2012. P&G reported a net sales increase of only one percent last quarter, which Lafley saying the company “could have and should have done better.”

Obviously, the move will effect the agencies working on P&G’s brands, including Publicis Groupe’s Publicis, Leo Burnett and Saatchi & Saatchi and WPP’s Grey. As Adweek points out, “Although these agencies work on big brands like Tide and Crest that won’t be affected by the divestiture, they also handle smaller, regional brands that collectively represent significant chunks of revenue from the world’s biggest marketer.” Last year P&G spent over $9.7 billion on advertising worldwide.
