Connelly Heads Back to Havas

It’s been a couple of years since we heard the name Walt Connelly, but the creative exec has now returned to his old stomping grounds at Havas New York, where he worked early on in his career when it was still known as Euro RSCG. Last we remember, Connelly and Ogilvy New York parted ways in summer 2011 after he spent just five months at the agency as executive creative director on the IBM account. Since that time, the creative exec has served as CMO at startup denim jeans brand I Am Not a Virgin and founded his own collective called Creative Apostles.

Now back at Havas, Connelly will assume the role of global ECD on the agency’s Merck Consumer Care business that includes the Claritin and Afrin accounts. Along with his Havas and Ogilvy stints, Connelly spent six years as ECD at JWT on Microsoft, Kimberly-Clark, HSBC, Ford and Bloomberg, and also served in a similar role for several years at McCann Worldgroup San Francisco

William Morris Acquires Minority Stake in Droga5

Jeez, what started out as a slow morning turned into quite a busy afternoon. A friend tipped us on this a couple of days ago and after a few inquiries, we’ve now received clarification/confirmation on the matter from Droga5 itself. No, David Droga did not sell his whole operation to talent agency William Morris Endeavor for something well into the nine figures (some are reporting less than half of what we heard), but the latter has indeed acquired a minority stake in Droga5. In a statement, Droga himself says, “Droga5 has always endeavored to be the most influential creative agency in the business, with ideas that move our clients and our industry forward. This partnership will exponentially accelerate our ability to realize that ambition.”

Despite the minority stake acquisition, the management of Droga5’s agency operations will not change according to the parties involved. Terms of the transaction were not disclosed.

Adding to the mix, might as well throw in the statements from WME’s head honchos Ari Emanuel and Patrick Whitesell, who say, “Droga5 is best-in-class across the board—from its management to its creative output. Through this investment, we will be able to join the best artists and storytellers from all verticals, and we look forward to creating new opportunities for our collective clients.”

DDB Chicago Appoints Paul Gunning as CEO

After 13 years spent moving up the charts at DDB, Paul Gunning has now taken on the top role as CEO of the agency’s Chicago office. Gunning replaces Peter McGuinness, who spent two years at the helm, but is leaving the agency and returning to New York to take on the role of chief marketing and brand officer for Greek yogurt brand, Chobani. Doesn’t seem too surprising considering that Chobani was a client of Gotham, the IPG-owned agency where McGuinness served as president/CEO before moving to DDB. As for Gunning, the newly minted DDB Chicago chief exec spent the last five years as CEO for Tribal Worldwide before assuming his new title.

In a statement regarding his appointment, Gunning says,  ”Chicago is my hometown, and DDB Chicago is one of the most storied and well-respected ad agencies in the world. I look forward to my new role and guiding the agency’s way forward with an emphasis on delivering outstanding results to our clients.”

Gunning first started out as an account director at Tribal DDB before moving up to VP/GM and then president before assuming his most recent role.

Campbell Ewald Has New CEO, Rebrands

Well, we guess this is notable enough to merit a separate non-Stir post. So yeah, as you may have read this morning, there’s a changing of the guard at IPG-owned Detroit stalwart Campbell Ewald, which has not only welcomed a new CEO, but has joined the global Lowe network. As a result, the new entity will now be known as, yes, Lowe Campbell Ewald and will be led by Jim Palmer, who has been with CE for over 20 years and most recently served as its vice chairman/chief client officer.

As you can gather, Palmer (pictured) is taking over for 31-year Campbell Ewald vet Bill Ludwig, who we’ve been hearing for weeks was no longer with the agency, which was repeatedly telling us otherwise. Along with Palmer assuming the top post, CE president Kathleen Donald will take on the role of chief operating officer and add more management responsibilities. Regarding Ludwig’s departure, IPG chairman/CEO Michael Roth says in a statement, “Bill Ludwig is leaving the agency poised for growth. We wish him well and thank him for his many contributions to the agency over a 31-year career, including putting in place a new generation of management that understands contemporary integrated marketing and the digital landscape.” According to the CE camp, Ludwig could still work in some capacity with IPG.

CP+B Promotes, But What the Hell’s Going on with Old Navy?

You know, we kind of slept on this, but we did inquire a week ago with Gap, parent brand of Old Navy, which gave us the curt, bullshit, “We have no comment on your inquiry.” Yeah, that took five email threads, in which CP+B rightfully deferred to client, to get that sort of clarity on matters. Anyhow, while the meandering ensues with this, we will say this pre-July 4 that there is some positive news to report, mainly that Crispin Porter+Bogusky has promoted three-year vet Kristen Fox to department head/director of social media.

During her time at CP+B, Fox has worked on notable clients including Grey Poupon, Jell-O, etc. and now will be tasked with overseeing social AOR efforts across all of CP+B’s offices.

JWT ATL Alum Wettstein One of Handful to Join CP+B Miami

It’s been a few months since we’ve heard the name Tim Wettstein, who last we recall spent approximately a year as senior partner/group creative director on Scana, Jiffy Lube and Xbox among others at JWT Atlanta. Well, the senior creative didn’t have to travel too far to take on a new gig as Wettstein (pictured) has now assumed a CD role at CP+B Miami, which appears to be ramping up its creative staff currently led by ECD, Bob Winter.

Joining Wettstein as a creative director at CP+B Miami is Kostas Karanikolas, who spent the last year as digital CD at BBDO New York, where worked on Gillette among other accounts. Along with the new CDs, MDC-owned CP+B has added associate creative directors Rick Abbott and Matt Orser, formerly of RP& and RPA, respectively, in its South Florida office, as well as art director Eli Perez de Gracia, and copywriter, Elena Romeu.

NFL Adds Heat to Agency Roster

We’re trying to get some clarification from Grey on this matter, as the agency has been working with the Roger Goodell and crew at the NFL for four years now. But, in the meantime, let’s turn our focus off of Grey for a moment and on to San Francisco-based agency Heat, which has been on radar for some time now mainly thanks to their EA Sports spots (recent Tiger Woods clip above). We’re fairly certain at this point that this isn’t an agency of record assignment, as Heat, which gave us the unforgettable self-promo below, will actually be tasked with handling NFL Network branding and promoting its priority programming including NFL Network’s preseason, GameDay and NFL RedZone programming. There was a review for the account, though we’re still awaiting if there was an incumbent on this biz.

Sherman Assumes CEO Role at JWT NY

Well, a friend chimed in with this a little while ago, but guess we got beat to the punch. Anyhow, JWT has welcomed Peter Sherman as chief executive officer of its New York hub. Sherman had spent the last three-and-a-years as EVP/managing director for BBDO Europe and eight years in all at the agency prior to moving back to NYC. Sherman had spent well over a decade at  Omnicom-owned BBDO, which included a four-year stint as managing director of its San Francisco office and EVP/senior account director in NY.

From what we’ve been told, JWT North America CEO David Eastman‘s title remains the same, and despite the NYC shift, he will still oversee the WPP-owned agency’s Atlanta, Chicago, Dallas, Houston and Canada offices, as well as units Digitaria, Lunchbox, JWT Action, JWT Inside, Casa and SCPF. Sherman, meanwhile, will focus specifically on overseeing New York operations. The latter exec adds in a statement, “It will be a privilege to lead this team.”

Buchner Succeeds Wehrenberg as Campbell Mithun Chief Exec

It took a couple of months, but Minneapolis-based IPG agency Campbell Mithun has finally found a new CEO in Rob Buchner, a nearly 25-year Fallon vet who actually kicked off his ad career at the former agency as an account executive in the mid-80s. Buchner replaces Steve Wehrenberg, who remains on as a consultant for CM but has taken a leadership position at the University of Minnesota’s Journalism/Mass Communications program. Buchner, meanwhile, had spent the last nine years at Fallon serving as its chief marketing officer. He will assume his CEO post at Campbell Mithun on July 8.

MRY Appoints 360i Alum as First CMO

It looks like MRY is on a senior-level staffing streak of sorts. Less than three weeks after bringing on AKQA alum Ian Chee as chief strategy officer and simultaneously promoting Matt Rednor to chief innovation officer, the NYC-based shop formerly known as Mr. Youth has appointed David Berkowitz as its first-ever CMO. Berkowitz joins MRY after spending seven-and-a-half years at Dentsu-owned agency, 360i, where he last served as VP of emerging media and worked with brands including Kraft, H&R Block and Bravo.

Regarding the hiring of Berkowitz, who has also moonlighted as an online marketing columnist for the likes of Mediapost during his career, MRY CEO Matt Britton says in a statement, ““David has a proven track record of seeing what’s just around the corner and creatively applying it for the world’s leading brands for more than a decade; in addition to being a riveting thought leader with a standout industry pedigree, there is no doubt that he will raise the bar for our team and our client partners.”

Current client partners at MRY, which of course merged with LBi this year, include Coca-Cola, Symantec and Neutrogena.

Powley Assumes Global Prez Role at iCrossing

Well, after some cuts here and a shuttering there, we finally have some positive news to report in 2013 about iCrossing, mainly that the Hearst-owned digital agency has promoted six-year vet Brian Powley to global president. Powley, who initially joined iCrossing in 2007 to manage the agency’s San Francisco office before taking on the role of chief client officer and subsequently president of its North American operations. Powley takes over for president/CEO Don Scales, who’s leaving iCrossing after seven years at the helm.

Prior to his joining iCrossing, which currently counts 18 global offices and clients including Beam, Coca-Cola, Pep Boys and FedEx (but no DirecTV?), Powley held managing director positions on the West Coast at both MRM and what was then Modem Media.

Firstborn Nabs Digital AOR Duties for L’Oreal Luxe

It’s been quite a while since we’ve heard from NYC-based, Dentsu-owned digital shop Firstborn, which has now taken over for R/GA as digital agency of record for L’Oreal Luxe, the cosmetics/beauty giant’s luxury brands unit that includes Lancome, Giorgio Armani, Kiehl’s and Urban Decay. The review for the Luxe digital account appears to have lasted longer than Honda’s as L’Oreal kicked it off last summer with approximately 15 agencies initially vying for the biz.

Regarding her company’s new digital AOR appointment, L’Oreal Luxe president Carol J. Hamilton says, “I am so pleased to have a partnership with Firstborn, whose dedicated energy and expertise in the world of digital will help drive our brands to new heights.” As a result of the win, Firstborn essentially extends its relationship with L’Oreal as it’s already worked with the brand’s Redken line. The digital shop, which has also handled digital efforts for other notable brands including Pepsi, Aflac and Under Armour, will initially focus on digital ecommerce marketing strategies for various brands within the Luxe portfolio.

R/GA, which had served as Luxe digital AOR for two years, will still continue its seven-year relationship with L’Oreal Paris.

BBDO NY/Atmosphere Proximity Nab North American Emirates Biz

Following the usual “competitive review,” BBDO NY and its sibling Atmosphere Proximity have been appointed as AORs for Emirates in North America. As a result of the airline’s move, which goes into effect August 1, Emirates not only extends a digital/social relationship with Atmosphere that’s lasted nearly a decade, but now adds BBDO to the fold as both agencies will collaborate on an integrated marketing campaign that’s expected to break late summer.

In a statement, BBDO NY president John Osborn says, “This is a great opportunity. An opportunity to build on the quality, leadership and footprint of the biggest international carrier in the world.  We are thrilled to be partnering with Atmosphere Proximity to help Emirates achieve its aggressive sales goals.”

Prior to BBDO, Emirates (which is also kicking off a global media review) worked with Boston-based ISM on its North American ad duties. This marks the second win for the agency this week following its appointment as creative agency for the ING New York City Marathon.

Powers Assumes Global CSO Role at McCann

Busy day on the IPG-related front, to say the least, as now McCann Erickson has announced that Suzanne Powers has joined the agency in the global role of EVP/chief strategy officer. Powers takes over for Daryl Lee, who was bumped up to global CEO of McCann sibling, UM. The new global CSO, meanwhile, arrives from CP+B, where she spent two-and-a-half-years in a similar position as global strategy officer.

In a statement, McCann Worldgroup chairman/CEO Harris Diamond says of his agency’s new hire, “We are pleased to have Suzanne join us. Suzanne has the energy, passion and skills to lead our incredibly talented group of strategic executives. She brings us a unique perspective on how to build global insights and ideas across our brands, geographies and culture.”

Prior to CP+B, Powers spent a decade at TBWA, moving up the ranks from account planner to global strategy director, working with brands including Mars, Nivea and GSK along the way.

Ogilvy Cuts Staff in Chicago

Details are hazy on this one, but after days of receiving tips including “reorg at ogilvy chicago today. Very high up changes,” we have received confirmation that O&M’s Windy City location has had to cut some staff this week (specifically Wednesday). We’re trying to get more info including numbers, reasons, departments affected, etc. on this but in the meantime, here’s a statement:

“After several years of significant growth, Ogilvy Chicago had a reduction in staff today. This is never an easy course of action, especially at an agency that places such high value on our people and our culture. We took a close look at our costs mid-year and the move was necessary to position ourselves for future success.”

We’ll let you know if and when we find out more.

KK Los Angeles Gets Animated with ‘Mythical Creatures’

The Los Angeles outpost of agency/content studio KesselsKramer, which opened up shop in Chinatown last year, is part of the creative team behind “Mythical Creatures,” a new documentary about artist Gary Baseman uncovering the story of how his parents survived the Holocaust in Ukraine. The film’s mixture of art and history also benefits from a score by South African duo, Die Antwoord.

The press release characterizes the project as “a whimsical story of survival and hope.” Using whimsical to describe a Holocaust story can be cringe-inducing, but after watching Baseman discuss his familial roots in his art studio, the description seems to make sense. Baseman’s artistic style has been described as “adorably perverse” by the Los Angeles Times, and that sort of imaginative approach to a story about Holocaust survivors could help the movie stand out creatively.

David Charles, ECD/partner at KK Los Angeles who wrote and directed the film tells us that his shop hopes to release the film in October, and to secure more funding. And not to worry, KK LA plan to start a second wave of Kickstarter donations later in a couple of days (we’ll update with link).

Credits after the jump.

You Wanted It (OK, Maybe Not Really), But You Got It: Your Season 2 ‘The Pitch’ Info

Nine months after reaffirming its “commitment to awfulness” as our own Bob Marshall so eloquently stated, AMC has finally revealed details of the upcoming second season of its ad agency reality slugfest (well, if only), The Pitch. The brands participating in season two — which will consist of eight, hour-long installments and kicks off Thursday, August 15, at 10pm — include 1-800-Flowers, Bliss, College Hunks Hauling Junk, Fuller Brush Company, Gibson Guitar Corporation, Little Caesars, Square Trade and Tommy Bahama.

Perhaps you’re familiar with several of the names mentioned above, as are we, but we’re not sure if any of the actual agencies vying for their work in The Pitch part deux ring a bell. But maybe that’s just us. Here’s your list: Daniel Burton Dean (Nashville, TN), Fletcher Rowley (Nashville, TN), Powell Creative (Nashville, TN), breensmith Advertising (Atlanta, GA), Innerspin (Los Angeles, CA), MC2 (Los Angeles, CA), COR (Santa Monica, CA), Neuron Syndicate (Santa Monica, CA), Central Coast (Chicago, IL), Commonground (Chicago, IL), The Monogram Group (Chicago, IL), Bee-line Communications (Chicago, IL), Mischievous Studios (Hollywood, CA), Heavenspot (Glendale, CA), OneX (Culver City, CA) and Pasadena Advertising (Pasadena, CA).

Maybe season two is a little less high-profile than its predecessor, but at least we’ll have more of Bob’s epic day-after recaps to look forward to once again.
