Omnicom Wants You to Spend More on Digital

money bagsThis won’t go over well. In a story we missed yesterday, Omnicom media operations CEO Daryl Simm told The Wall Street Journal that everyone needs to spend less money on TV spots and more money on…digital video.

This isn’t exactly a surprise. Simm argues that it’s just a way of re-framing the same old relationships:

“Online video ad spending is growing at a considerably faster pace than overall media budgets have been growing…So TV money is traveling to all of those other alternatives.”

And how large is the shift?

“We are counseling our clients to move between 10% to 25% of TV dollar to online video, depending on the target audience…A significant portion of the dollars are actually going back to TV owners for their online properties.”

But:

“The amount of quality online video is still an issue…What does it mean for a brand to be associated with a particular piece of content? And what does that mean for the consideration of that brand by consumers?”

Despite all this, Simm says that “The desire for more measurement and accountability is getting higher and higher.”

His message to traditional ad folk: expect more of the things you don’t like.

Yahoo Reaches Out to Agencies for Consumer Brand Campaign

yahoonewlogo1

Sources familiar with the matter have said that Yahoo has reached out to agencies for the creation of a new consumer brand campaign, AdAge reports. Yahoo declined to comment to that publication.

The search is being conducted without a consultant, with Yahoo reaching out to a number of agencies and inviting some to pitch ideas later this month. While there is no word on which agencies are involved, Yahoo has worked with Ogilvy and Goodby Silverstein & Partners, its agency of record from 2009-2011, in the past. According to AdAge‘s sources, the company, formerly a large TV spender, is considering all media for the new campaign. (more…)

The Martin Agency Wins Ritz Creative Duties

RitzLogoBox-764041The Martin Agency will be producing creative work for Ritz Crackers starting in 2015, a Mondelez spokeswoman confirmed to AdAge yesterday. Ritz spent an estimated $16.6 million on measured media in 2013, according to Kantar Media.

The agency will take over for Havas Worldwide, which has handled creative duties on Ritz since 2007. Mondelez made the decision without any review, but The Martin Agency already handles creative duties on Mondelez brands Oreo and Chips Ahoy (and has since 2012).

“Havas Worldwide New York and Mondelez International are parting ways after a seven and a half year partnership,” said the Mondelez spokeswoman in a statement. “We experienced great success together, most evident in the Ritz ‘Open for Fun’ campaign, which earned multiple awards including a Bronze Effie and two One Show Design Silver Pencils. The campaign also contributed to Ritz being named ‘America’s favorite snack’ brand two years in a row and helped grow the business upward of 35%. We wish them continued success.” (more…)

Samsung (Mostly) Sticking with Publicis

samsung storeSamsung’s global review is over, and the news from AdAge isn’t much of a revelation: the company is sticking with Publicis. For the most part.

The significant part of the story imparted by “people familiar with the review” who didn’t talk to us is that the company added W+K and BBH to its very large agency roster — and that Leo Burnett retained its creative duties despite a challenge from Grey.

We didn’t get any tips on this one, and the lips of all related parties were sealed:

“Wieden & Kennedy, BBH and Starcom did not immediately respond to requests for comment. Leo Burnett declined to comment. Representatives from Samsung in South Korea and the U.S. did not return requests for comment.”

It’s been a slow week for tips with Advertising Week occupying everyone’s attention here in New York, but we’re impressed that people made so little noise about the future of such a big account.

Saatchi & Saatchi, NY Assumes Lead Creative Duties for Vita Coco

saatchi-and-saatchi-square-logo1Vita Coco, a leader in the rapidly growing coconut water market, has selected Saatchi & Saatchi, New York as its lead creative agency.

Arthur Gallego, the brand’s director of corporate and consumer communications told AdAge the hiring is “really part of an ongoing global growth strategy,” adding, “In the past, when the brand has advertised, we’ve typically worked with smaller shops. So this is the first time that we’ve worked with a truly global agency.”

Two months ago, Vita Coco announced plans to expand into China, via a deal selling a 25% stake in the company to Reignwood Group, parent company to Red Bull China. While Saatchi & Saatchi’s creative duties will be limited to North America, Gallego noted that “there is brand architecture [that] informs everything we do globally.”

Saatchi & Saatchi, New York will work on a new campaign expected to launch in the spring. While the brand has used Rihanna in past advertising, Gallego emphasized that Vita Coco was looking for more of a “brand centric” approach going forward. According to Euromonitor International, Vita Coco had sales of $267.5 million last year, with the brand estimating it controls 60 percent of the “premium coconut water market.”

Big Changes at Publicis: Levy Staying, Razorfish Absorbing Rosetta

Some French dudeIn case you haven’t seen it already this morning, The Publicis Groupe officially rewarded Maurice Levy for his failure today by extending the current chief executive’s role until (approximately) The Avengers 3.

Despite the fact that Levy assured The Guardian that he would “not be seeking a new term” in the halcyon days of 2010 and that other reports had him set to leave next year, it seems that Levy will stick around at least until the approval of all accounts at the end of 2016 — and that he will leave in early 2017.

Obviously, “No clear successor has been appointed to replace Levy.”

Two former candidates will definitely not be replacing him, though.

New Kastner CCO on the Appeal of Moving from a Big Agency to an Indie Shop

jamie reillyLast month we learned, via MediaPost, that Los Angeles indie agency Kastner & Partners (best known as Red Bull’s longtime AOR) had appointed a new CCO.

The agency recently made it official with a release announcing the hire of Jamie Reilly to run the shop’s creative department. The most interesting part of the story, though, is Reilly’s history: after beginning his agency career as an art director at Deutsch LA and freelancing for Saatchi & Saatchi and other shops, Reilly spent almost nine years at TBWAMAL, the West Coast Apple-only agency that has, at times, seemed nearly as secretive as the client itself.

He then joined 72andSunny as a creative director in January 2013 before leaving at the beginning of this month to join Kastner.

We wondered what sort of trade-off could lead an experienced creative to leave a big name for a smaller, less-established shop.

Today Reilly gave us his take on the transition.

Sprint Kills Hamster Dead, Promises to ‘Simplify’ Creative

In what may be the least surprising news of the week, Sprint executives officially announced plans to “simplify” their creative efforts moving forward.

Yes, that means no more “Framily” and no more Frobinsons despite Sprint CMO Jeff Hallock’s earlier claims that the “decision is still to be determined.” Here’s the killer quote delivered by new President/CEO Maurcelo Claure at Goldman Sachs 23rd Annual Communacopia Conference (which sounds like an awesome party):

“Our plans are confusing [and our] marketing was a hamster talking to people. We are having a hard time selling the products.”

OK, now tell us how you really feel.

Ogilvy Celebrates Coke Zero, Wins Kimberly-Clark Baby

Ogilvy

This morning we have an update and some breaking news regarding Ogilvy: the agency made its Coke Zero win official and won new business from client Kimberly-Clark.

On the Coke front, a source tells us that an internal memo regarding the win (which we broke last month) recently circulated around the agency’s offices. The source noted that this is the first major agency move made by top marketer Wendy Clark since she assumed leadership of Coca-Cola North America in May.

The following tweet from Ogilvy CMO Lauren Crampsie seems to confirm that the party started last week…

Grey NY Lands Lean Cuisine

lean-cuisine-220Nestlé brand Stouffer’s Lean Cuisine is handing off its creative business to Grey New York, following a review that also included 360i, Santo and incumbent agency JWT New York, Adweek reports. According to Kantar Media, the brand spent $30 million on measured media last year, down from $33 million in 2012.

JWT New York won creative duties on Lean Cuisine back in 2011, following its split with Havas Worldwide (then Euro RSCG) in late 2010, after over ten years with the agency. Adweek initially reported the review back in June. The review was just the latest shake up for Nestlé, which is also in the process of searching for an agency for a new corporate image effort, as well as conducting a digital review, as the company attempts to shift to a perception as a “health and wellness” company. It also follows the company’s decision to award its U.S. media and planning business to WPP’s GroupM media group last year. Both Grey New York and Nestlé declined comment to Adweek on the agency’s appointment.

Panera Names Anomaly Lead Creative Agency

panera-logo-jpgPanera Bread has named Anomaly as its new lead creative agency following a review that included two other agencies which the casual dining chain declined to identify, Adweek reports. Spending on the assignment is estimated at $90 million, according to that publication, and the review did not include media buying and spending, which will remain at Maxus.

As you may recall, Anomaly succeeds Cramer-Krasselt, who ended its relationship with the brand back in June. Cramer-Krasselt CEO Peter Krivkovich announced the agency’s resignation from the account via an internal memo, citing creative difference which he called “too much even in this crazy business.” Panera Bread Chief Marketing Officer Michael Simon responded by claiming the brand had issued a creative review, which Cramer-Krasselt opted out of.

Simon told Adweek that Anomaly’s recent work for brands including Budweiser (for whom the agency crafted World Cup and Super Bowl campaigns) and Dick’s Sporting Goods landed them on Panera list of agencies for initial consideration, and that “its strategic thinking and ability to deliver more than just advertising (content, new product ideas, etc.)…set it apart from other contenders.”

An idea the agency pitched in the review is currently being refined into a new campaign, which is expected to debut early next year. (more…)

TBWA Wins Airbnb, Buffalo Wild Wings

airbnb_horizontal_lockup_print

Today TBWA added two new clients to its roster: apartment sharing “startup” Airbnb and casual dining chain Buffalo Wild Wings. While the former already scored a writeup in AdAge, neither client nor agency has formally announced the latter.

In the case of Airbnb, the agency’s Los Angeles office led the pitch with assistance from Paris, London, Brazil and Singapore. You may recall that Pereira & O’Dell created Airbnb’s first TV ad back in May, though none of our contacts were able to confirm whether that agency was involved in the unannounced review that ended with today’s appointment.

BWW signed Fallon in 2012 without a review after spending nearly eight years with 22squared (nee WestWayne). This time around, the company appears to have kept the process under wraps as we cannot confirm which agencies competed with TBWA for the account.

Airbnb’s first full campaign should launch during the 2014 holiday season. Updates as we receive them.

Los Angeles Clippers Name RPA Lead Agency

STK-NBA-LAC-P2010-01The Los Angeles Clippers have announced the hiring of Santa Monica-based RPA as its new lead agency, tasked with heading strategy, creative, media planning and buying, digital/social marketing and branded entertainment, following a review launched in August.

The review was launched in search of an agency with experience “rebuilding an established, well-known brand” in the wake of the Donald Sterling scandal. Boston-based Pile & Co led the review, with a focus on agencies based in the area. New work can be expected soon, as the Clippers “will start the 2014–2015 season with a new creative platform that will be promoted across media channels.”

“The Los Angeles Clippers are poised for greatness. RPA will help the franchise become a first-class sports and entertainment brand,” said Kirt Danner, SVP, group account director at RPA. “The soon-to-launch campaign will help the franchise stand out and seize this unique opportunity to gain a competitive edge and increase its fan base.”

The team spent $433,500 in measured media last year, according to Kantar media, but that number could increase with the demands of the new campaign.
