Bruce Dunlop Has a Few Choice Words Following BDA’s Closure

BDA Creative’s original founder Bruce Dunlop issued a statement following the agency’s closure, citing “disagreements with the board regarding the future direction of the company” and “changes planned by the new management team” for his departure in April 2012. Dunlop went on to form a new agency, Dunlop Goodrich, with partner Daryl Goodrich following his departure.

In the statement, Dunlop largely blamed the new management team for the agency’s failure, stating “The company was run down by people who didn’t understand for one minute how we had got to where we were, and what potential was left in a big forward thinking creative company. We had done all the legwork, and just had to continue to produce good work, which was always our ambition above everything.” He speculated that “If the energy that went into destroying the company had been focused on making it better, the story would have been very different today.” Dunlop also thanked “all those who made BDA a great company” for their contributions. Tiffany & Co. Wants Your Agency’s Media Pitch

Holly Golightly’s favorite brand is looking for a few good agencies to pitch it: retailer Tiffany’s officially began its global media review today.

The news comes after the company chose Ogilvy as its global creative AOR back in February following a four-month search. (That agency’s status will not be affected by the new call for pitches.)

From Ad Age:

“The company has sent agencies a document requesting information and an introduction describing the goals of the pitch”

…which will concern the company’s $100M annual media spend.

The real issue here: Tiffany’s wants to work with a single agency rather than the multiple shops that now handle its media needs. The company’s sales numbers and stock prices are doing quite well, so victor, spoils, etc.

Red Lobster Names Publicis Lead Creative Agency

Red Lobster has named Publicis Kaplan Thaler as its lead creative agency, reports AdAge.

The appointment follows a review, which Red Lobster started in April, after Darden decided to sell off the brand. Grey had been the brand’s creative agency after winning agency of record duties from The Richards Group back in 2010. According to AdAge, Grey did not participate in the review process, but retains creative duties for Darden brands Olive Garden and LongHorn Steakhouse. They also report that Olson, Barkley, and Interpublic’s Martin Agency were the other finalists in the review process, which was overseen by Pile & Co.

Mark Gilley, senior vice president, marketing at Red Lobster told AdAge that “the chain chose Publicis Kaplan Thaler because of its creative pitches, its existing work and digital and social strategy, the last of which is [a] particularly important element for Red Lobster as it moves more marketing dollars into digital,” adding that he admired how the agency’s recent work for Wendy’s “‘broke conventions’ in the fast-food category.”

Publicis Kaplan Thaler’s first campaign for Red Lobster, which spent around $156 million on measured media in 2013, is expected in the first half of 2015.

Can Advertising Change ‘Fauxsumerism?’

One thing posting on AgencySpy has taught us: marketers and creatives love a robust conversation.

On that note, we’d like to bring your attention to an alarming trend that doesn’t seem to show signs of fading away anytime soon: “Fauxsumerism.”

Essentially, those super-valuable Millennials would rather spend countless hours browsing online than ever actually buying anything. Numerous surveys and thought leadership gatherings have been dedicated to turning these perpetual browsers into buyers–but is it really possible?

FOX and Nielsen: Ratings War No More

In what would have been quite the change of scenery for a major ratings draw, FOX recently threatened to leave Nielsen to go to exclusively with Rentrak for its measurement needs. In what resembled a real-life episode of 24, this imbroglio went unsettled until the last minute.

In short, advertisers (and our fellow agencies) don’t have to worry about altering subscriptions or anything, FOX is staying put.

The story from MediaPost tells us that this tiff between the two sources almost escalated into something nasty. The deal was announced just as Fox’s previous contract was set to expire, averting what would have been one of the biggest defections of a major TV stations group in Nielsen’s recent history.

Slovakian Billboards Double as Homeless Shelters

Welcome to Slovakia: Where the Homeless Live in Advertising.

Sound strange for an ad campaign? What if it were real? According to AdWeek, it is.

Billboards have often served as placards for cause marketing and conscientious messaging, so why not use them for something more tangible, like a literal roof over someone’s head?

In Slovakia, an architectural firm called Design Develop created a philanthropic arm of their work with ‘The Gregory Project.’ Its mission:

“to find optimal alternatives for existentional [sic] questions of people without a home through the use of billboard objects and their advertisment [sic] spaces.”

We appreciate their community outreach efforts even as we decry their spelling.
