Occupy wasn’t a costume party

We’re more than that greenwashed, blackwashed, bluewashed bullshit they make so sexy on TV.

Have you paid attention to the commercials since Occupy? It’s been two years, more than enough time for the ads to start singing some familiar tunes.

Dissent, revolution, revolt. Seeking a better world—seeking a better today. Constant crisis; revolution as the subtext. The game is changing. They’re done mocking us; now they want us bad.

In 5-10 years, we’ll start seeing ourselves on TV shows, but if we haven’t changed our tune by then it’ll probably be too late.

It means we’re winning, but it also means that the game has shifted. We’ve flipped all their pieces, but one wrong step and they’ll flip them all right back. They’re on the front foot now, so we need to anticipate their choices, re-focus and press our advantage into unexpected spaces.

They want to make the trappings of our dissent sexy—the gardens, the protests, the anti-work, the DIY, the culture jam, the joyous resistance—because sexy dissent is safe, like a costume party. Like a vaccine against the future, they give those images to mainstream culture before it catches our disease.

That’s why I see Occupy kids in the soda commercials these days, dripping with sex and freedom, all bandanas and compassion and sincerity. But why are we all driving Hondas, using MacBooks and drinking Diet Coke?

All the money in the world and you can buy yourself a Senator, you can even buy yourself an orgasm, but you can’t buy Congress’ approval rating past 10 percent.

The culture’s jammed—we won. It doesn’t know itself any more. It doesn’t trust any of its leaders. The culture shift has finally hit a tipping point, falling into varying forms of madness and cognitive dissonance roiling under the placid, exhausted surface. Baby boomers in adult diapers shaking their fists on the porch are the only semblance of integrity the old guard has left. The rest are ripe to adopt a new normal.

This is our world now. We’ve fought for it. We’ve stood by it. We’ve earned it. We’re the most passionate people we know. Imagine if we got respectable. Imagine if we lived as if we wanted to conserve the humanistic, creative, anti-authoritarian, anti-oppressive memes we’ve spent so many years building.

How can the destroyers grab a foothold when the new normal doesn’t want them? They want to shut down our cultural gravity, but they can’t hit a moving target. They think we’re just our trappings, the anti-capitalist branding, but we’re more than that greenwashed, blackwashed, bluewashed bullshit they make so sexy on TV.

Don’t be seduced. Don’t let others be fooled. That’s not you on the screen. It isn’t anybody.

Let’s walk our walk in a completely new yet familiar direction, eyes fixed not on the path but toward the horizon, and we’ll fuck up their whole paradigm before they can use the tools of media myth-making to take the game back.

Ford Trashes Cadillac With Great Parody of ‘Poolside’ Ad Everyone Hated

It took a while, but someone has finally lampooned Cadillac's much-derided "Poolside" commercial starring Neal McDonough. And not just any old someone—Ford Motor Co.

Ford's agency, Team Detroit, shot the parody below, which stars the polar opposite of the McDonough character—Pashon Murray, the founder of Detroit Dirt, a sustainability consultancy and advocacy group. The Cadillac spot showcased the CLR luxury plug-in hybrid. The Ford video shows off the Ford C-MAX hybrid. But Murray's message about today's America is light years away from Cadillac's.

The spoof is posted on its own YouTube channel, not Ford's. But it has Ford's tacit approval. Speaking to the Deroit Free Press, Ford spokeswoman Sara Tatchio described the video as "lighthearted," and added: "I don't think we're mocking a competitor. We're trying to showcase positive work being done in our community."

Yeah, no mockery going on here. GM has not commented.

Daily Candy No Longer Sweet

You can’t read a media brand by its cover. For instance, Daily Candy looks like an incredibly healthy site. But its owner, NBC Universal, is not pleased with the numbers.

So displeased are the suits that they decided to pull the plug on Daily Candy and Television Without Pity.

According to Variety, Comcast bought DailyCandy in 2008 for $125 million from investment firm Pilot Group. Since then, Comcast acquired NBCU — with female-focused networks like Bravo and Oxygen — but the hoped-for synergies with DailyCandy never materialized.

Kara Swisher thinks there may be a lesson here.

Beware! While there may be a perceived boom in content online recently and interest in investing in it, not all of the players get to survive.

Nor should all the players survive. Although in a more perfect world, purveyors of high quality content will have a decided edge.

In the real world though, quality is not always a determining factor. Financial success requires that you provide content—be it good, bad or ugly—to an interested audience that is willing and able to support the media enterprise directly via subscription or indirectly by being open to sponsored messages.

Free Amazon TV? Advertisers Shut Out of Netflix Eye a New Option

UPDATE: An Amazon spokeswoman responded after this article was posted to deny that a free streaming service was in the works. “We have a video advertising business that currently offers programs like First Episode Free and ads associated with movie and game trailers,” she said in an email, “and we’re often experimenting with new things, but we have no plans to offer a free streaming media service.”

Amazon has been ramping up its ad-supported video efforts over the last six months. Now we may know why.

Kit Kat Just Created Its Own Unofficial Lego Set, and It’s Awesome

Break me off a piece of this awesome homage to Lego from the marketing folks at Kit Kat.

Chances are, whenever you eat a Kit Kat, you think to yourself, "Now if only I could deconstruct this candy bar and construct insane little creatures out of the pieces."

Well, your oddly specific dream can now be a reality. According to this flickr set, there are Lego people hidden inside the bars of chocolate, and you can make planes, beavers, dinosaurs, WHATEVER YOU WANT out of the pieces. The chocolatier notes this project is "a tribute from Kit Kat to Lego, builders of one of the best breaks ever. This is not an official Lego product."

Not shown is the process of putting the candy bar back together. Also not pictured: the extensive and warning labels and disclaimers that would be required, though the whole thing is sure to be safer than making figurines from empty cans of Lone Star beer

Taco Bell President Dishes on Marijuana, ‘Demolition Man’ and Justin Bieber

Ronald McDonald loves Taco Bell, and Taco Bell loves Reddit.

The chain launched its biggest menu rollout ever today with attention-grabbing advertising. Its massive marketing blitz kicked off with TV spots that feature a slew of real, actual Ronald McDonalds saying they love Taco Bell’s breakfast. (McDonald’s, in a somewhat surprising move, responded on Twitter with a tweet that said, “Breaking! Mayor McCheese confirms: Ronald, in fact, still prefers McDonald’s,” accompanied by an image of Mayor McCheese giving what appears to be a press conference.)

Part of the Taco Bell marketing blitz includes a press tour by President Brian Niccol, appearing on “Fox and Friends” and HuffPost Live. He even held a Q&A Thursday on Reddit’s Ask Me Anything.
