Flurry Launches Service to Track Mobile App Users, Offline

At the moment, a company like Ford can count the downloads of its mobile-app and even blast out ads for the app to “car enthusiasts.” Soon, they’ll know if the app users actually crossed into a dealership.

Flurry, the mobile-app measurement and advertising platform, assists brands in targeting car fanatics, “Movie Lovers,” “Bookworms” and forty plus other consumer “Personas.” On Monday, Flurry announced a partnership with Research Now, a digital data collecting firm, to create what they call the largest panel database on mobile users. And they’re selling it to marketers.

Currently, Flurry tracks behavior and demographic data on 150 billion app sessions a month. With its new offering, the firm couples its reach with Research Now’s survey tool, ADimension. Marketers can identify a target audience, strike them within a mobile-app, then see what they did after.

Banksy Reworks ‘Balloon Girl’ in Campaign for Syria’s Children

Banksy's "Balloon Girl" provides a fitting image for the children whose lives have been ravaged by Syria's civil war, which just entered its third year.

The British street artist drew some criticism in October for the "awkward politics" of his satirical video about the conflict. His balloon imagery in this new "With Syria" awareness campaign, however, based on his stencil from 2002, has met with considerable praise, and rightly so.

We've seen several stirring calls to aid Syria's children recently. They include a PSA in which physicist Stephen Hawking gives voice to their plight, and a video that imagines if the horrors took place in London. (Both are from Save the Children.)

"With Syria" is no less powerful, and its duality is striking, encompassing both hope and regret. The hopeful message of kids lifted above violence and strife toward a better future (represented with soul and simplicity in the "With Syria" video) has received the most attention.

The regretful message is subtler. A child clutching for a balloon suggests a childhood lost. Forever. That fate has befallen far too many Syrian kids already. More will suffer if we don't rise to the challenge and bring about meaningful change.

The animated spot was written and created by Sunshine, and directed and produced by RSA Films. Idris Elba does the voiceover. Elbow contributed exclusive music.

Disney Names ABC News President as Co-Chairman of TV Unit

Walt Disney Co. named ABC News President Ben Sherwood as co-chairman of its media networks, filling the vacancy created by the planned departure of Anne Sweeney in January.

Mr. Sherwood’s time atop ABC News included the ascent last year of “Good Morning America” over the longtime No. 1 morning show, NBC’s “Today.” This year ABC News and Univision started Fusion, a cable network aimed at young Hispanics.

ABC’s prime-time programing, however, has been lagging rivals in total viewers and in the 18-to-49 demo this season. Recent disappointments include “The Assets,” “Killer Women,” “Mind Games,” “Lucky 7” and “Betrayal.”

Save the Children: The resume nobody would like to have

Film
Save The Children

Thousands of Peruvian children are exploited; they are made work on the streets under unsafe and dangerous conditions. To communicate this problem we send resumes to high executives and human resources managers at many corporations in Peru. This way we got on their tables a taste of this harshreality and they got the message across.

Vice Says It’s Weighing IPO Prospects, Considering Buying a TV Network

Vice Media, the company that combines punk culture with online journalism, is poised to double revenue to $1 billion by 2016 and may pursue an initial public offering, co-founder Shane Smith said.

The company, backed by billionaire Rupert Murdoch, expects to reach that mark in 12 to 18 months, with profit margins targeted to widen to 50% of sales from 34% now, Mr. Smith, 44, said in an interview with Bloomberg TV.

With young, sometimes tattooed reporters filing stories from a snake-infested island off Brazil or the civil war in the Central African Republic, Vice Media attracts a male viewer coveted by web and TV advertisers. The growing online, mobile and TV business could have a market value equaling Twitter’s $28.9 billion if Vice Media goes public, Mr. Smith said.

Zimmerman Unveils More Pics from New FTL Space

Screen Shot 2014-03-23 at 11.19.41 PM

As we briefly mentioned two weeks ago, Omnicom-owned, Fort Lauderdale-based agency Zimmerman is opening up a new, 130,000 square-foot space, and now we have a bit more info and visual representation of what to expect from the unveiling this Friday, March 28. While we won’t be back in our old FTL hometown for the unveiling, we’ve been sent some images above and below of what to expect from what’s being dubbed Zimmerman 3.0. We’re still awaiting a couple of quotes from self-appointed “maverick ad man” Jordan Zimmerman, he of sizable portrait below:

In the meantime, though, here are some takeaways from the new office:

-Open office concept and design to encourage “collaboration, appealing to the average employee age of 26″ (1,100 full-time associates are in the mix). Well, it is all the rage these days in the agency world.

-Floor-to-ceiling writeable walls in every office to facilitate creativity.

-Customizable color lighting in elevators to embrace national clients, and finally, what we feel is the coup de grace…

-Departments organized as “neighborhoods,” each portraying a Zimmerman value — i.e. the “Fearless” neighborhood is lined with punching bags (below).

Fearless Speedbags

This might be the first type of agency office accoutrement we’ve seen like this and maybe it’s just a way to take out one’s aggression at times. Or, hell, we’ll just say it’s installed for the symbolism. And finally, here’s one more shot from the new FTL space, which was designed by architectural/design firm, Gensler.

Over the years, Zimmerman has worked with clients ranging from Office Depot and Papa John’s (the latter of which moved to Grey last month) to CBS and White Castle
