360i’s Bryan Wiener Becomes Chairman of Social Marketing Company Expion

Bryan Wiener, CEO of Dentsu unit 360i, is taking a step back to become the agency’s chairman, and he’s also taking on a new role as chairman of Expion, a Raleigh, N.C.-based social media management and analytics software company.

Expion has been 360i’s preferred social platform partner since 2011, and it’s used by clients like Coca-Cola, Oreo and Univision, which have independent deals with the software company. One major use case is for big brands to assign out the right levels of access to social accounts to people across their global organization. Other customers include IBM, H&R Block and Clear Channel.

Dentsu took a minority investment in Expion in March 2012 and Mr. Wiener joined its board then. He recently led a seven-figure investment with funds contributed by himself and some undisclosed executives.

A porta do futuro

Deutsch New York has been named the lead agency for Jagermeister after a review.

Independent Los Angeles agency Mistress, which picked up the business in September 2011, was the lead agency. The brand has also worked with agencies such as Crossmedia, but prior to Mistress, it had not had an agency to work on the brand in 25 years.

The review process was internally managed. Work from Interpublic’s Deutsch is expected to launch this year.

It’s a Bumpy Road to Advertising for Legal Marijuana, but Fortunes Will Be Made

About two years ago, I was cutting through the lobby at Traction and saw our receptionist talking to a guy who had just walked in off the street. It seemed as if she didn’t know what to do with him. “Can I help you?” I asked him.

“I’m looking for an ad agency,” he said and handed me a business card that said Grassroots Cannabis. “I run the largest medical marijuana dispensary in San Francisco.”

Of course, the first thing out of my mouth was, “Look buddy, we’re not cheap. You got any money?” He threw out a six-figure number and, sensing a great creative opportunity, I said, “Alright, let’s talk.”

China’s Super Bowl Equivalent: 4 Hours, 700M Viewers, 0 Ads

China’s annual TV extravaganza to ring in the Lunar New Year is often compared to the Super Bowl in scope, but it’s bigger (700 million viewers), with more bling (dance numbers, celebs, sequins).

One big difference: No commercials are permitted during China’s gala.

Instead, state broadcaster CCTV asked agencies this year to pitch public service spots on a theme dear to President Xi Jinping, the Chinese Dream. It’s a nebulous idea he invokes to refer to a “great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation.”
