VML Nabs Cobra Puma Duties

cobrapumaFollowing a “formal competitive review” that involved incumbent/Troy NY-based creative agency, id29, as well as “several West Coast shops” along with VML, it was the last, WPP-owned agency that won out for the Cobra Puma Golf account. This marks the second AOR win for VML since last December, when the agency picked up ad duties for NAPA Auto Parts.

Cobra Puma Golf president Bob Philion says in a statement, “VML is an innovative agency with extensive expertise in creating meaningful consumer experiences within the world of marketing, and we are excited to have them on board. Their understanding of the industry and ability to tell our Game Enjoyment story across multiple platforms will help us elevate our communications platform and reach an even greater global audience.” , VML has taken over the activation of the current COBRA “Go Looooong” campaign and will continue to focus on all 2015 product launches. You can check out the first print work for Cobra Puma Golf from VML, which will also handle global creative for the brand in UK, Canada, Japan, Germany, Sweden, South Korea, South Africa, Australia and China, after the jump.

Alt-Weekly Mocks Its Own Buyout With a Cover That Looks Just Like Its New Owner

When you're an alt-weekly known for skewering the establishment, how do you tackle the fact that you've been bought out by the establishment?

Baltimore City Paper takes a commendably self-effacing approach with today's issue, the cover of which was designed in the staid style of the paper's new owner, The Baltimore Sun.

Acknowledging that its buyout by the city's mainstream newspaper is "beyond absurd," City Paper squeezes an impressive amount of dark humor into its satirical cover. (Click here to see a full-size version.)

The Sun's lofty motto, "Light for all," has been replaced with "Jobs for some," a reference to the pending raft of City Paper layoffs. The lead story, speckled with obscenity and drug references, ends with the jump tease "MORE CURSE WORDS, Page 14." Each reporter's byline is a cobbled medley of media ownership, like "Baltimore City Paper, no wait, The Sun—no wait—The Hartford Advocate, no, The Sun, maybe? Taco Bell?"

While this spot-on cover surely won't be enough to placate readers and observers who are concerned about City Paper becoming a gutless annex of The Sun, the move definitely shows it might be possible to sell out without giving up.

Here's a comparison of how the two papers normally look:

Ex-DDB Design Head Pagan Heads to Deutsch NY

juancarlosddbWell, that didn’t long, either. Just a week after we reported that Juan Carlos Pagan had turned in his notice at DDB New York, where he spent the last two-and-a-half years as head of design, we’ve received word that the creative has moved over from Omnicom to IPG. Pagan has now joined up with the latter holding company’s agency, Deutsch NY, to serve in the newly created role of, yes, design director. From what we’ve been told, Pagan, who also spent time at the likes of what was G2 during his career, will assume his new role at Deutsch’s Big Apple hub next Monday, March 3.

Deutsch NY CCO and Pagan’s new boss, Kerry Keenan, says about the hiring, “I worked with Juan Carlos last year. He will be a great leader as we grow our design offering. His passion and talent for design are evident in every project he touches.”

Ad Execs Bike to SXSW for Lyme, COPD Awareness

Longhorn Tomato Motorcycle RunTwo ad executives — chief operating officer at W2O David Mihalovic, and W2O global chief creative officer Mike Hartman — are biking from northern New Jersey to this year’s SXSW in Austin, Texas to raise funds for Lyme Disease and COPD research in an endeavor they’re calling “Longhorn Tomato Motorcycle Run.”

The pair will set out from Asbury Park in a couple of days and have announced that “Anyone on two wheels brave enough to hit the road in the north east in early March is invited to join.” In the mean time, the fundraising aspect of the trip is in need of some help. Mihalovic and Hartman have raised $2,093 of their $25,000 goal. Undeterred, the pair says “…it’s time to give. Not give up.” So head on over to the donation page and help them out, if you can. It’s for a good cause.

Once the ride kicks off, you can follow the group’s Facebook page for updates on the action and their current location. Good luck, guys.

What If Twitter Got a Lot More Useful?

The U.K. division of Twitter is trying to draw attention to the platform’s potential as a customer-service provider with a blog post this morning announcing just such an effort from the telecom giant O2.

For Twitter, making noise about O2’s #TweetServe is a way to signal that it is serious about broadening its mass appeal. Twitter needs to demonstrate that it has utility beyond serving as, well, a news feed, a source of celebrity musings and a place to talk about TV. That whole social TV phenomenon, for one thing, isn’t necessarily as white-hot as it used to be, as my colleague Cotton Delo recently reported.

And as I wrote in November during the lead-up to the company’s IPO, “Twitter needs some new schtick, quick” — meaning that it had to find ways to seduce new users who simply don’t get why they should be using it. I suggested then that Twitter needs to work harder to become something more than just a pit stop on the way to other media destinations. Showing off #TweetServe, which is designed to make life slightly easier for telecom customers seeking account information, is a step in the right direction.

Alright Already, Here’s Your Mark Taylor Update

marktaylorListen folks, we love you, but we can’t be everything to everyone, whether it concerns the likes of Mark Taylor, the man who had three stints at Crispin Porter + Bogusky (yes, three) and a brief spell at GSD&M, who parted ways with the MDC-owned agency last summer.  In case you didn’t read the post from AdAge, which by the way still hilariously lives in some Mad Men era and/or ranks themselves up with the New York Times –”my exclusive or the highway”–but is even more anachronistic (just fucking be civil, not political), Taylor has now joined up with Energy BBDO as its new chief creative officer.

Anyhow, I digress. Here is a statement from Energy president/CEO, Tonise Paul, who says, “Mark is an amazing talent and we couldn’t be more delighted to welcome him to our Energy BBDO family. When you look at Mark’s work, you will see a history of marketing innovation. With the challenge of increasingly parity products and the opportunity afforded by the constant emergence of new technologies, this is how brands today win. Mark’s work is a collection of big, original ideas that have solved big business challenges. You will recognize it because it was often the first time you saw it done, starting with Subservient Chicken. On top of his track record of great work, Mark is a wonderful guy.”

Taylor will assume his new role on April 7 but until then, Chicago-based Energy BBDO will continue to be led by a group of senior creative directors.

Study Finds Homes on Embarrassing U.K. Roads Are 20% Cheaper

If you're looking for a good deal on a home in England, you might want to consider an address on Crotch Crescent, Turkey Cock Lane or Clitterhouse Road.

Real estate website NeedaProperty.com recently analyzed home values on 15 roads voted to be the most embarrassing to live on, and the results showed you could save 20% (an average of 84,000 pounds or $140,000) by moving onto a road with a risqué name.

The site polled 2,000 Brits to determine the streets they'd be most ashamed to say they lived on, then analyzed property values on those roads compared to similar locations nearby. The results have gotten wide coverage in the British press.

The list of embarrassing street names included some uniquely British slang terms like Minge Lane, Slag Lane and Fanny Hands Lane, along with some internationally chuckle-worthy titles like The Knob, Cumming Street and Cock A-Dobby.

Coldwell Banker to Debut ‘Your Home’ During Oscars

Siltanen & Partners have released a follow up to Coldwell Banker’s GRAMMY “Home Sweet Home” spot called “Your Home,” which will debut during the Oscars this Sunday.

The new spot is the latest in Coldwell Banker’s #HomeRocks campaign, and will mark the third straight year the company has worked with Tom Selleck, who lends his recognizable voice to the 60 second ad. “Your Home” is in much the same vein as the campaign’s previous work, emphasizing the sentimental attachments people make to the places they live and tying it to the brand with the “Where home begins” tagline. While a continuation of Coldwell Banker’s second annual awards season campaign rollout, this particular spot was also strategically timed for this year’s Oscars.

“The Oscars are perfectly timed to reach consumers with our message of how home plays a role in the story of our lives while also aligning with the spring homebuying and selling season,” explains Sean Blankenship, senior vice president of marketing for Coldwell Banker. “It’s also fitting that the Oscars will pay homage to the 75th anniversary of ‘The Wizard of Oz’ and Judy Garland’s classic line, ‘There’s no place like home.’”

Selleck, as you may remember, has deeply rooted ties to the company. “When I was four, my father put the Sellecks in the family car and left Detroit for Southern California to pursue a career in real estate. He worked for Coldwell Banker for 38 years, retiring as an Executive Vice President. Over that period, my two brothers and sisters were with Coldwell Banker, as well. I was the one exception. I’m proud to say that I’m now part of the family business, ” said the man once known as Magnum PI.

As part of the campaign leading up to the new spot, voters on Coldwell Banker’s Blue Matter blog voted Apollo 13 as having the best homecoming scene in movie history, beating out the likes of The Wizard of Oz, The Best Years of Our Lives, and Home Alone, which finished dead last. Keep an eye out for the new “Your Home” spot during the Oscars this Sunday, and stick around for brief credits after the jump. continued…
