Sarah McLachlan Returns to Plead for Life of (Fictional) Pup

Remember those old SPCA commercials featuring singer Sarah McLachlan, accompanied by puppies and their soulful eyes, that pretty much guaranteed to set you off on a crying jag as soon as they came on? Well, Audi does, and has released a second Super Bowl teaser that is clearly a clever, funny nod to those classics.

The teaser features Ms. McLachlan in a “Special Message” designed to raise awareness around a creature who needs your help — the Doberhuahua — who will be the star of the car company’s Big Game commercial on Feb. 2. We’re assuming it’s the same pooch that scared off judges at a dog show in the first teaser.

Ms. McLachlan will also make what the brand calls a “comical cameo” in the Game Day spot, which, like the teasers, was developed by agency Venables Bell & Partners in San Francisco.

Cannes Lions Ad Fest Creates a New Awards Category: Product Design

Agencies, start setting aside more money for your Cannes entries: The Cannes Lions International Festival of Creativity has announced a new category to honor product design.

That brings the number of categories at Cannes to a whopping 17 — which also means more entries, and more money, for the Festival. Cannes last year saw a record 35,765 entries, a 4% jump from the year prior that may partly be attributed to the addition of a new category, “Innovation Lions,” honoring tech that enables commercial creative excellence.

The new Product Design Lions will “recognize the applied use of physical products in aiding the communication of a brand ethos,” as well as the product’s ability to improve people’s lives, festival organizers said in a statement.

All Nippon Airways ‘Big Nose’ Ad Called Racist

ana_big_nose.jpg

Well this ad has certainly stirred up a shit storm. Japan’s All Nippon Airways ran an ad that shows two Japanese gentleman in ANA pilots uniforms talking to each other at the airport. They mention that the airline now flies to Hanoi and Vancouver and comment on how this change relates to the perception of Japanese people.

During the exchange, one man asks the other, “Want a hug?” Japanese men hugging in public is usually frowned upon. The man then says, “Let’s change the image of Japanese people.” We then see the other man “transformed” into a non-Japanese person complete with a blond wig and a large nose.

Many are crying racism against white people. But many are pointing out it’s the Japanese making fun of themselves. Other are just laughing because they think it’s funny. And every conceivable angle on racism, bigotry and stereotyping is being shared in the video’s comments.

We’re actually not going to share our opinion on the ad here. Why? Because we’re tired of every article on this topic turning into an unresolvable shit storm of epic proportion.

Critics Say Japanese Airline Ad Is Racist Against Westerners

After being called racist for portraying Westerners as big-nosed blond men who aren't afraid of hugs, Japan's All Nippon Airways has promised to edit the offending scene out of its commercial.

In the original spot, shown below, an All Nippon pilot (played by a popular comedian) attempts to "change the image of Japanese people" by donning a long, fake nose and a blond wig. The airline began receiving complaints in social media that this portrayal was insulting to Westerners.

What's more apparent to me is the self-deprecation on display here ("such a Japanese reaction"). In fact, I'd dare to say this ad isn't particularly offensive, especially when compared to all the other stuff one could say about Americans. Hell, the fact that we aren't being depicted as fat oafs who smell like grease and milk is a step toward progress.

‘The Man Your Man Could Smell Like’ Returns with ‘Interneterventions’ for Old Spice

mustafaweb

Isaiah Mustafa, “The Man Your Man Could Smell Like,” returns for W+K Portland’s new “Interneterventions” campaign for Old Spice from executive creative directors Susan Hoffman and Joe Staples (full credits forthcoming, we hope).

W+K created nine fake websites for the campaign, for products such as “100% Black Leather Sheets,” “Illegal Neck Workout Machine,” “The Push Up Muscle Shirt,” and “Soul Patch Powder.” When users visit these site they are met with an “Internetvention” from Mustafa, who chides them on their poor life decisions and suggests that they can start turning things around by using Old Spice. There are nine separate executions for the nine different sites, each employing (like the sites themselves) W+K’s often imitated brand of humor. Visitors can also choose to prank their friends by forwarding them the sites on social media, a pretty clever way to get people to spread the campaign. Since the sites and the executions themselves are fun to watch, people may actually be driven to share the links. I mean, why wouldn’t you forward your buddy a link to “Brodominiums,” the condominiums located inside a gym?

Yellow Gets the Starring Role in M&M’s Super Bowl Spot

A year after the Red M&M belted out Meat Loaf's "I'd Do Anything for Love (but I Won't Do That)," it's Yellow's turn to take the spotlight during the Super Bowl.

The Mars candy brand just released a teaser for its 30-second spot, set to air in the first half of the Feb. 2 broadcast. Not much is revealed, aside from some aerobics and an abduction via tranquilizer dart.

The spot, from BBDO New York, will promote peanut M&M's.

"It's about time we remind the world how irresistible M&M's Peanut really is," Seth Klugherz, senior director of M&M's Chocolate Candies, said in a statement. "Each M&M's Peanut is literally 1 in 100—meaning we have to sort through 100 different peanuts, just to find one that's lucky enough to make its way into a bag of M&M's Peanut."

L.A.-Based Startup Sues WPP’s IconMobile

judgegavel

Here’s a bit of legal news to kick off another terribly cold day. In case you didn’t hear, an L.A.-based interactive agency/mobile product startup dubbed Mach18 Design is suing WPP-owned IconMobile. Why? Well the lawsuit, which is being brought on by Dykema Gossett, LLP, alleges that Mach18 initially approached IconMobile as a potential vendor and development partner in late 2012/early 2013 in regards to the former’s development of a technology platform intended to “drive the future of global in-car experience” dubbed ARIVE. Before discussions could begin, though, Mach18 first required IconMobile to execute a nondisclosure and non-circumvention agreement.

While the NDA was executed, the lawsuit alleges that IconMobile eventually ignored its contractual confidentiality and non-circumvention obligations to Mach18. How so? Well, according to the plaintiff, Mach18 soon found its calls going unanswered, and “subsequently learned that IconMobile had begun working on a copycat pitch to several of Mach18’s actual and potential business partners shortly after reviewing Mach18’s”proprietary presentation.” To make matters, according to the lawsuit, IconMobile allegedly “dissuaded other consultants and advisors from doing business with Mach18 in an attempt to disrupt Mach 18’s business opportunities.”

We’ll keep you posted if we hear more, but here’s a statement from Mach18′s lead counsel/Dykema partner Christopher Kit Winter: “Mach18’s experience is what every innovator fears. A potential partner’s confidentiality obligations must be sacrosanct, especially when the disclosing party is a startup. The fact that IconMobile is Goliath to Mach18’s David should not mean that IconMobile can ignore its obligations with impunity. Mach18 is prepared to act vigorously to protect its intellectual property and to enforce its contractual rights.” Does Mach18 have a case? You make the call. But anyways, we’ve put in a call to IconMobile, which has yet to respond to the filing as well according to the L.A. startup.

Arnold Schwarzenegger Pranks Gold’s Gym Members For A Good Cause

If Arnold Schwarzenegger walked into your gym, would you recognize him? What if he was wearing a wig and a mustache? Not everyone would as you can see in this video he did for the gym with the aim of promoting the After-School All-Stars program which offers kids health and leadership education.

There are quite a few funny moments in the video as well as some fitness advice doled out as only Schwarzenegger can. Funny stuff.
