Brazil Kicks Off Tourism Promotion In World Cup Countries

Brazil’s government tourism authority Embratur took advantage of today’s live World Cup draw to start targeting online videos at potential visitors to Brazil from key tourism markets. The draw, eagerly awaited by soccer fans around the world, places the 32 national teams in 8 groups and determines which teams will play each other first, and in which of the 12 Brazilian cities that will host World Cup games starting in June 2014.

Embratur worked with Sao Paulo agency Neogama/BBH to create videos for each of 13 key tourism countries that have teams playing in next year’s World Cup in Brazil. Each video is narrated by a native of that overseas market who happens to live in Brazil, talking about the charms of the city that his country’s team will play its first World Cup game in.

Because no one knows the outcome of the drawing in advance, Neogama had to shoot one-minute videos for each of the 12 host cities for all the key countries. They include the U.S., five European and five Latin American countries, and Japan. An additional film, covering all the host cities, will be used in the other countries participating in the World Cup with the exception of Iran, which doesn’t allow online media.

Saatchi & Saatchi NY CCO Con Williamson Announces Resignation

220410-Con-Williamson-1-bodyWe’ve just received confirmation from sources outside of Saatchi & Saatchi’s New York offices that CCO Con Williamson announced today his plans to leave the agency, reportedly to start a new shop. A toast in his honor was held at the NY agency earlier today.

Williamson joined Saatchi & Saatchi in 2010 after a CCO stint at the agency formerly known as Euro/RSCG NY. Over the past decade he’s also spent time at Fallon, JWT, and his own agency, Lodge212.

No word yet on who’ll be joining Williamson at his as-yet-unnamed new agency, but we’ve heard tips that a few other Saatchi NY colleagues announced their resignations today too. A more official announcement from Williamson and the agency is expected tomorrow. As always, we’ll keep you updated.

Also, as it’s Friday, we’ve embedded a Drake video below.

Pop Secret’s Pop Dongle Makes Your iPhone Smell Like Popcorn

Pop Secret and Deutsch Los Angeles have for the last year been coming up with innovative digital ways to change your popcorn-eating experience, via Pop Secret Labs. There was Pop Search, a browser add-on that searched the web to find the best place to watch a movie online; a Rotten Tomatoes partnership to help viewers find like-minded critics; and an app to prevent your popcorn from ever burning again.

But this might top them all.

Pop Dongle is a mobile phone attachment that emits the sweet-and-salty smell of popcorn as you play the brand’s mobile game, Poptopia, available for iPhone and iPod Touch. Every time you swipe the butter inside the game, which asks players to pop corn kernels, the Dongle will emit a spritz of popcorn scent. How did they do it? The dongle plugs into the audio jack, so the game emits a certain frequency signaling it to go ahead and spread the smell. Deutsch worked with Deeplocal, the tech production company on projects like Nike’s “Chalkbot,” to develop the design and technology of the dongle.

Alarm Clocks Go Social with God Morgon

Screen Shot 2013-12-06 at 2.47.11 PM

What if you could replace the dooming anticipation of your inevitable alarm clock ring with something spontaneous and interactive? We’re not talking about technology from Minority Report, but God Morgon, a Swedish company, linked up with Spotify for “a social wake-up clock” that let’s you choose songs for your friends’ alarms. Imagine if you give over Spotify power of attorney to that friend who wants to ruin your sleep by picking Slipknot. Or if a friend wants to trick you into oversleeping, he/she can throw on some Enya.

God Morgon is actually Sweden’s third largest juice brand – there’s got to be a joke in there somewhere. Sweden’s third tallest midget. But this non-juice product is very cool and seems simple and intuitive. Below, you can see some images of the interface:

ESPN, McKinney Debut Suggestive ‘Take It All In’ Campaign for SEC

Today, Southeastern Conference commissioner Mike Slive and ESPN senior vice president Justin Connolly debuted a new brand campaign celebrating the planned launch of the SEC Network. Both national television spots and previews of print ads “were revealed as part of a series of SEC Network programming announcements made at a press conference prior to the SEC football championship game at the Georgia Dome, in Atlanta.” The new campaign, developed along with North Carolina agency McKinney, is called ”Take It All In,” which may or may not be a reference to butt chugging.

The campaign includes “a series of print, TV and online ads that not only focus on the overarching SEC Network, but also on each of the 14 schools of the SEC.” The full “Take It All In” campaign will roll out next year, leading into the launch of the network in August.

The debut TV spot, called ““Not Just a Casual Fan” (which, come to think of it, would have made a better campaign title), can be viewed above. It, in Justin Connolly‘s words, ”bring fans the grandeur of the SEC in a celebratory, immersive and real way.” As the title of the spot suggests, it features die-hard fans both old and young, many of them ridiculously dressed. This is a solid tactic, since these are the kind of rabid SEC fans who might shell out for the new network. It’s just too bad they didn’t think of all the implications to their tagline/campaign title. Or maybe they did. Credits after the jump. continued…

Thursday Is Hollywood’s New Friday as Weekend Expands

Hollywood studios are squeezing more into their weekend box office reports this year, adding ticket sales from Thursday shows and making big movie openings look even more lucrative.

Fourteen films this year with opening-weekend sales of more than $50 million were screened on Thursday nights in U.S. and Canadian theaters, according to data from Fandango.com, the ticket-buying service. That compares with two last year, when most early showings started at 12:01 a.m. on Friday.

The Thursday shows give studios extra business on a slow night and, in some cases, the chance to trumpet record totals with the extra day tossed in to the traditional Friday-to-Sunday tally. While the new accounting method suggests a better reception for a movie, it can muddle comparisons with earlier films.

Budweiser’s Tweet-Powered Knitting Bot Makes Holiday Sweaters for Designated Drivers

Bad news for grinches who still hate ugly holiday sweaters despite their newfound ironic popularity: Budweiser U.K. is adding some charm to the practice of capitalizing on them.

The beer brand has created a "Knitbot"—what it calls a tweet-powered knitting machine—to knit ugly sweaters for designated drivers. Every tweet tagged with the hashtag #jumpersfordes (jumper being British for sweater, and des being short for designated drivers) causes the machine to knit a little more. Everything about this—the grasping for relevance in social media, the uninvited participation in a tradition not directly connected to any brand—should be annoying. But it's hard to argue against celebrating non-drunk-drivers. People always get sloppy wasted during the holidays, after all, so why not foster good will—and look less mercenary—by focusing on the chaperones?

A quick Twitter search for #jumpersfordes returns only a few dozen mentions since Nov. 27. Now, the brand plans to hand out the sweaters to actual designated drivers via a contest on its Facebook page. Sure, it's not the first holiday campaign to tie in Twitter, knitting and wooly giveaways. But the campaign's real problem is that the sweaters aren't near ugly enough. Coke Zero's are way worse.

At The Glenn Group, Part II of Card Charity is Even Gooder

As far as titles go, Good [for goodness sake] Part II #evengooder is up there, and by up there, I’m not sure if I mean awesome or terrible. It’s definitely up there, though. All of this philanthropic goodness comes from The Glenn Group, specifically Diego Sabogal, a graphic designer and artist, who is creating original holiday cards that anyone can bid on, starting at $50, during a December 9 auction. All of the proceeds will be donated to feed hungry people in Nevada.

The Part II #evengooder campaign owes last year’s original Good [for goodness sake] some credit. The 2013 auction raised $1,000 in one day. This year, bidders will be able to target their sights on custom sets of holiday cards and prints, including Santa and Rudolph dressed in yellow Breaking Bad jumpsuits while cooking meth in the desert. For goodness sake, that’s good. You can do some early bidding on items here. Screengrab below:

This Video Will Make You Want to Be an Ass-Kicking Entrepreneur, Now or in the ’80s

Grasshopper.com's epic parody 1980s entrepreneurial video has all the right things. It has the word "epic" in the title. It has that one-take, walking toward the camera while grabbing props out of nowhere thing that people go nuts for. It has a great actor who went to the Shatner school of pausing. It references psychologically important American cult films like American Psycho. And it includes amazing '80s music. It even has amazingly useless joke acronyms. And if you don't love it for all that, watch it to see the best example of a business card ever conceived. All of which is why it's another YouTube success for this small business that serves small businesses. The only thing that would have made it better is kittens.

Zulu Alpha Kilo’s ‘Proof of Santa’ App Raises Money for Make-A-Wish Canada

If you’re looking for ways to “prove” to your young one that Santa is real, you should check out Zulu Alpha Kilo’s free “Kringl” app.

The app allows parents to create their own personal Christmas video scenes, which they can then share on YouTube, Facebook or Twitter. Users begin by selecting one of five Santa vignettes, then film a chosen location, and finally insert Santa, adjusting for lighting and size so that he fits seamlessly into the scene. They can then show their children Santa’s magical visit, dispelling any doubts the kids may feel about Saint Nick’s existence. The free app also collects donations for Make-A-Wish Canada, for those in the giving spirit. It’s a cute idea, and hopefully people will be pleased enough with the app that they’ll feel compelled to donate.

Check out the above video to see a preview of the app in action, along with a variety of adorable responses. Credits after the jump.  continued…
