Korean Air Lands on Madison Ave

Korean Air has landed downtown in Madison Ave, with a new, interactive video wall aimed at enticing business travelers.

The immersive, interactive wall, designed by Pearl Media, was installed at 335 Madison Avenue — a location strategically selected for its heavy foot traffic and proximity to Grand Central. Visitors to the wall, after activating it through gesture-based technology, are invited to choose from a list of cities, including Dubai, Bali, Seoul and Prague. Then, the video screen immerses them in the selected location and prompts them to take a photo, which can then be emailed and shared on social media. A sweepstakes is also part of the promotion: nine winners will receive a $500 Korean air voucher.

The experience “…is intended to be a market disrupter to encourage travelers to consider Korean Air,” says Pearl Media CEO Josh Cohen, who adds, “Breaking demanding business travelers out of their familiar patterns is an ongoing challenge for airlines.” And yes, Pearl Media’s Korean Air experience attempts an intriguing solution. It also looks pretty fun. Check it out for yourself if you’re in the neighborhood, and let us know what you think in the comments section.

Why Brands Will Focus Less on Startups in 2014

David Berkowitz

Hey, marketers, are you excited to finally kick off some amazing startup partnerships in 2014? Want to get some hackathons going? Maybe you can crowdsource ideas and incubate them? Sorry, but that thinking is so 2013. Come 2014, brands are going to get more serious, and startups are going to have to work harder to get their attention.

Wendy Clark: All Marketing Strategies Should Start With ‘Why’

In a recent strategy meeting with our team, we watched Simon Sinek’s landmark TED talk, “Start with Why.”

Again.

If you haven’t watched it, you really should. It’s 17 minutes of marketing common sense. Simon lays out a simple, yet powerful, observation that the companies, leaders and brands we hold up as innovative, market-shaping and successful, start with “why” — why they are in business, not what they are selling.

Three Ways to Fix the Flawed Agency Model

The advertising-agency model is flawed. As an industry we do more and more for less and less money. Timelines are shrinking. And with the onslaught of social media and real-time marketing, we’re asked to find new ways to “go viral” and earn media without incremental compensation. When clients need new thinking, they go to pitch. Sometimes we even give away our best ideas. Some clients think of an agency’s “product” as a commodity readily available for a continually reduced price. But let’s not just blame clients and their procurement departments.

Much of this is our own doing. We show up for every pitch and we keep delivering more work for less. We pass all the benefits of efficiency and effectiveness on to our clients and only get paid for the time it takes to come up with an idea and to create an ad.

The good news is that it’s simpler to fix than everyone thinks. There are only three things we need to do to not only fix the flawed business model of advertising, but reinvent it:

“What’s The Damage?” calcula o prejuízo das destruições em filmes

Assista acima.

Why Multicultural Shops Have the Advantage

Craig Brimm

The advertising industry still refuses to make good on old and oft promised diversity initiatives. The industry may ignore the lack of diversity and the dearth of women in upper management, but it will truly put itself in peril by ignoring the cultural shift taking place.

Financial Forecast for 2014: Tough, But Manageable

How do I see 2014? Tough but manageable, with a bit of incremental growth.

If we look at the growth forecast for nominal GDP at 5.5% to 6.5% or real GDP at 3.5% to 4% globally, both up from 2013 by 0.5% to 1%, the underlying environment is a bit little better. So we’re in this slow crawl out of the “Lehman” recession of 2009, which was pretty devastating for a lot of companies and people.

Of the four “gray swans” (or known unknowns) that we identified — the eurozone, Middle East, the hard/soft landing of BRIC and the U.S. deficit — three have probably got whiter and turned less grim, although there are arguments both ways. People generally feel that the eurozone, if not under total control, is under [European Central Bank President Mario] Draghi’s strong hand at the tiller. In the Middle East we’ve seen a little bit of progress with Iran and to some extent with Syria, although it’s still a big mess. Generally I think people feel a little bit more bullish, for example, about Egypt and the potential new regime there.
