Posted in: UncategorizedESPN to Debut First Spot for 2014 World Cup Tomorrow
Posted in: UncategorizedIt’s time to start getting excited about the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil. With the opening game about six months away, ESPN is set to debut their first spot in their campaign promoting the event during tomorrow’s telecast of the 2014 Rose Bowl.
Set to “Festival” by Icelandic maestros, Sigur Rós, the spot is, somewhat predictably, a mixture of footage of Brazil and historical World Cup moments. But then, what more could you want to begin stoking anticipation for the world’s biggest sporting event? The spot ends with the crop of current superstars who seek to win thier place in the ranks of World Cup history this summer: Lionel Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo, Mario Balotelli, Robin van Persie, and Neymar.
For those of you super World Cup buffs, here’s a partial list of the historical moments featured in the spot:
- Pele and his triumphant celebration in 1970
- Germany’s Franz Beckenbauer and Dutch captain Johan Cruyff exchanging flags moments before the 1974 Final
- Diego Maradona and his brilliant performance for Argentina in 1986
- Zinedine Zidane, whose epic performance for France led the host country to win the Cup in 1998
- Andres Iniesta, whose beautiful strike sealed Spain’s first World Cup title in 2010
- Cameroonian striker Roger Milla’s famous dance in 1990
- Dutch legend Johan Cruyff’s immortal turn in 1974
- England striker Geoff Hurst’s record-setting three-goal performance in a World Cup title match in 1966
- Dutch striker Dennis Bergkamp’s memorable touch against Argentina in 1998
- Carlos Alberto’s wonder-strike for Brazil in 1970
- Paolo Rossi hoisting the cup for Italy in 1982
ESPN’s full World Cup campaign will roll out gradually over the next couple of months. Stick around for the extended, 90 second online version of the ad, along with credits, after the jump. continued…

Best of the Best Lists: The Year’s Top TV According to TVGuide.com, Paste, AFI and More
Posted in: UncategorizedEDITOR’S NOTE: To close out the year, Ad Age media columnist Simon Dumenco has been gathering up selected notable critics’ picks across pop culture and presenting them in convenient, all-in-one servings by category. Yesterday’s round-up covered the best music of 2013. The first round-up of New Year’s Eve covered movies. And here, TV.
Indie pop-culture magazine Paste’s 25 Best TV Shows of 2013 list starts with a telling note: “With basic cable, pay channels and now streaming services like Netflix cutting into their once-dominant domain, only four network TV shows made our 25 Best TV shows this year.” Sundance Channel’s “Rectify” kicks off the countdown in the No. 25 spot, with AMC’s “Breaking Bad” taking No. 1. (The four network shows that did rate? Fox’s “Bob’s Burgers” and “New Girl,” CBS’s “The Good Wife” and NBC’s “Brooklyn Nine-Nine.”)
TVGuide.com offers its Best TV Shows of 2013 list in the form of a 20-slide slideshow. ABC’s “The Goldbergs” (“Adam F. Goldberg’s semi-autobiographical show has made sentimentality cool again, mixing in sweetness and warmth with the insults and laughs”) starts off the list at No. 20; “Breaking Bad” takes the No. 1 spot. One late, great on the list: NBC’s “30 Rock” (at No. 15).

Posted in: UncategorizedY&R, VML Unveil New ‘Beginnings’ for Dell
Posted in: UncategorizedTonight, Y&R is launching a new multimedia campaign for Dell called “Beginnings” that “celebrates the reawakening of the entrepreneurial spirit upon which the company was founded.” The campaign, created in conjunction with WPP sibling VML along with Dell, will include broadcast, digital, OOH and print work and is the first major effort for the brand since it officially went private a couple of months ago.
“Beginnings” is an homage to the “modest starts of some of Dell’s most notable corporate customers,” including Whole Foods, Under Armour, Skype, TripAdvisor, and Shutterfly. The campaign kicks off tonight with a TV spot celebrating the dreamers who recognize that innovation starts with new ideas. Set to a cover of “This Magic Moment” by The Felice Brothers, the ad goes through the humble beginnings of these and other successful corporate customers before likening them to Dell’s own humble beginnings, in a dorm room in 1984. The spot’s unfettered optimism seems appropriate for the start of a new year, and it only makes sense for the company to look back at its history, given its recent leveraged buyout.
The full 60 second ad will be followed by both the full version and a 30 second abridged version airing across broadcast and cable networks for the next several weeks, including during the 2014 Winter Olympics in February.
The television campaign will be accompanied by “high-impact digital and OOH billboards…in Times Square, with the TV spot and banners viewable on Taxi TV in cabs throughout the city.” There will also be a “mix of traditional and digital billboards” at the Austin-Bergstrom International Airport in Austin, Texas. Credits after the jump. continued…

Best of the Best Lists: 2013’s Top Movies According to Entertainment Weekly, Film Comment and More
Posted in: UncategorizedEDITOR’S NOTE: To close out the year, Ad Age media columnist Simon Dumenco has been gathering up selected notable critics’ picks across pop culture and presenting them in convenient, all-in-one servings by category. Yesterday’s round-up covered the best music of 2013. Today we have movies.
Entertainment Weekly serves up its take on the best movies of the year in the form of a couple of countdown slideshows from its marquee movie critics. Owen Gleiberman’s list starts with the Coen Brothers’ “Inside Llewyn Davis” at No. 10 and ends with Steve McQueen’s “12 Years a Slave” at No. 1, while Chris Nashawaty’s list starts with James Wan’s “The Conjuring” at No. 10 (“one of the most delirious experiences I had at the movies this year”) and gives Richard Linklater’s “Before Midnight” the No. 1 spot.
Empire, the British film magazine, presents its list of the 50 Best Films Of 2013 as a group-bylined collaborative effort by its house critics (Helen O’Hara, Phil de Semlyen, Ian Freer and Chris Hewitt). They threw three late entries — Ben Stiller’s “The Secret Life of Walter Mitty,” Adam McKay’s “Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues” and Peter Jackson’s “The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug” — onto the tail-end of the list, and settled on Alfonso Cuarn’s “Gravity” as the No. 1 film of the year.

Posted in: UncategorizedThe Real World Web mostra sites x mundo real

Fold7 Debuts New Campaign for Gocompare.com
Posted in: UncategorizedGocompare.com appointed London-based Fold7 as their new advertising agency back in November after the usual “competitive” pitch. Now, following a segue ad launched on Christmas day in a primetime spot during Downton Abbey, comes Fold7′s first full campaign for the price comparison site.
Fold7′s new campaign will officially launch on New Year’s Day and “will herald a new dawn for the brand whose previous advertising had divided the nation with their larger than life character Gio Compario.” Compario is pushed to the background for the new spot, playing the part of a bus driver taking a tour group to a rather exhaustively named land. They reference Go Compare’s old approach by opening the ad with Compario humming “Over There,” before flipping on the radio.
The whole tour group approach is a little strange, with passengers talking about going to …Go Compare to save on car insurance or check out credit card deals as if it is an actual place nestled in a lush green countryside. While the new approach is a little curious (as is the painful final line in the ad), it should be a relief to those annoyed by the more flamboyant Gio Compario spots, which, I suppose, is the whole idea. Fold7′s campaign seems a good deal more low key: talking, rather than yelling (or singing), about gocompare.com’s services.

What Calvin and Hobbes Can Teach Us About Big Data
Posted in: UncategorizedFans of comic strips still fondly remember “Calvin and Hobbes,” the story of a peripatetic 6-year-old and his stuffed (but oh-so-real) tiger. One of my favorite strips shows Calvin digging in his backyard, pulling up “a few dirty rocks, a weird root and some disgusting grubs.” His exclamation to pal Hobbes: “There’s treasure everywhere!”
I’ve found myself thinking more and more about that phrase as I ponder this year of “big data.” Now big data certainly has a lot of promise, and it certainly has been hyped to death. But it’s also — to many of us — pretty scary. Big data requires lots of other big things, including big computer hardware, big staff, big project timelines and big budgets. And for many of us, big data is proving daunting and confusing as well.
We’ve been working on our own big-data project here at Discovery Digital Networks for the past year. It’s not been without challenges. We discovered that one of our trusted data sources has numerous inconsistencies, while another supposedly “real-time” source really couldn’t be trusted until about 15 days after each month closes. We’ve also had to revamp our staffing assumptions and timelines. We’re starting to get some killer stuff out of that project, but it’s taken longer, cost more and exposed more warts than we ever expected.
