Lenovo Signs New ‘Project Engineer’: Ashton Kutcher


Ashton Kutcher: Project Engineer. That’s not the name of his next TV show, but his new job title at Lenovo.

After a livestreamed press conference in Los Angeles tonight to announce a partnership with Lenovo, the actor, producer (co-founder of Katalyst Media), social-media maven and angel investor is flying to company headquarters in China, where he will spend several days conferring with engineers and designers on the team producing the company’s Lenovo Yoga tablet.

“Ashton Kutcher is the ultimate super user,” said David Roman, Lenovo’s chief marketing officer. “The super user is helpful to us in defining products and experiences that consumers want. His sense of what technology can do through his own use and the technology he’s seen through his other startups [helps us.] And his celebrity helps us in marketing.”

McGarryBowen Drives Away With Maserati


McGarryBowen, New York, has picked up the creative account for luxury carmaker Maserati after a procurement-led review.

The agency referred calls to the client, which did not respond to a request for comment. Much of the marketing for the brand, including creative and media services, had been done in-house in recent years. Maserati in 2002 hired WPP’s Brouillard, but the agency closed in 2009.

Maserati has been owned by Italian car company Fiat since 1993; the company also owns Ferrari, Lancia and Alfa Romeo. Fiat bought a majority stake in Chrysler Group, which operates Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep and Ram, in 2009.

Global fashion brand RevolutionWear has launched a new campaign in which beautiful Swedish models urge men to stop wearing underwear. Well, at least all types of underwear except for RevolutionWear’s FRIGO brand underwear which is being introduced to America.

The campaign will include outdoor, events, digital promotions and retail merchandising in New York City, Los Angeles, and Miami. To coincide with the outdoor teaser campaign, 1,000 pairs of underwear will be given away in online sweepstakes.

Of the campaign’s approach, RevolutionWear CEO Mathias Ingvarsson said,”Our goal in this campaign is to underscore that traditional underwear is dead and the conversation about a highly engineered new class of men’s underwear needs to be started.”

FRIGO’s claim to fame? The FRIGO Zone; a perfectly formed mesh pouch to more effectively support men’s packages.

Best Buy Tries To Co-Opt ‘Showrooming’ This Holiday Season


For Best Buy, this holiday season will be all about showrooming.

The practice — where consumers visit a store to check out an item in person and then buy it online from another retailer, often at a lower price — has become a major concern for bricks-and-mortar retailers. In early 2012, Target famously sent a letter to vendors asking for help to thwart showrooming. Yet, less than two years later, Best Buy is using showrooming as a rallying cry.

“What a difference a year makes. The press couldn’t have been more negative about what was going to happen to Best Buy this time last year,” said Scott Moore, senior VP-marketing. “At the root of it there was a theme around how showrooming would be the final straw, the thing that just knocked us out.”
