Art Replaces Ads on 22,000 Billboards and Other Out-of-Home Sites in the U.K.

There's art everywhere! It's loose in the streets! The onslaught of art will kill us all! possibly enhance our dreary, workaday lives!

The Art Everywhere project in England fuses art and commerce on a grand scale, with reproductions of 57 popular works—ranging from the 16th century to modern times—replacing ads on 22,000 out-of-home ad sites, including billboards, bus shelters, tube-station walls and other locations like shopping malls and office buildings. Innocent Drinks cofounder Richard Reed spearheaded the initiative (it was his wife's idea), and he described Art Everywhere to the Guardian as "a joyful project with no agenda other than to flood our streets with art and celebrate the creative talents and legacy of the U.K."

Some $4.7 million worth of ad space is being used for the project's two-week run—the tagline is, "A very very big art show"—with online donations helping to cover costs. The art was chosen by the public, with pieces selected from a list provided by the Tate gallery and the Art Fund. "The Lady of Shalott," an ethereal, evocative 1888 oil-on-canvas by John William Waterhouse, inspired by a Tennyson poem, topped the vote count. But, d'uh, who couldn't guess that.

It's only appropriate that ad space is being employed, since billboards, commercial posters and advertisements of all kinds are the popular art of modern times, reflecting the contemporary culture as surely as pre-Raphaelite paintings captured the nuances and obsessions of an earlier age.

Not that I'd advocate such a thing, but I'm sure that at some point a few taggers (perhaps even Banksy, England's maverick anti-advertising artist) will see fit to deface the public displays. It's clearly vandalism, but I think they'd be creating valid hybrid works that could say quite a lot about art, human nature and the media-saturated times in which we live. Or else they'd just be acting like jerks.

BP’s Latest PR Push: Don’t Take Advantage Of Our Settlement Agreement

BP has once again taken to the nation’s newspapers to make the case that it’s being taken advantage of by unscrupulous lawyers and people who were never financially hurt by the massive 2010 oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico.

The company has spent more than $14 billion on cleanup and response and $11 billion on claims since its 2010 oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico, but in a full-page ad that ran this week in The New York Times, Washington Post and Wall Street Journal, it’s declaring “This isn’t the settlement we agreed to.” The ad states:

Last year, we signed a settlement agreement to ensure that people who suffered losses from the accident would keep being paid. When we negotiated that agreement, we sat down in good faith with the goal of helping as many deserving people as possible. And when we signed it that’s what we thought the agreement would do. Unfortunately, it’s now being applied in a way that ignores the agreement’s plain language, with enormous payments going to businesses that did not suffer any losses.

15 Favorite Agency Watering Holes Around the Country

It’s no secret that ad folks like a good drink. While so much has changed since Don Draper’s time, drinking in the office hasn’t — it’s a weekly fixture for employees whether it’s at Arnold’s “Barnold,” BBDO’s “Central Filing” or Peterson Milla Hooks’ airline drink cart.

But what about where they congregate after hours in town? That all depends on where in the country they’re based. As Courtney Beuchert, CEO of Eleven in San Francisco put it: “Maybe every agency since the Mad Men era has it’s bar — somewhere nearby that feels like home (if home had cool people, music, booze and the feeling that something crazy could happen if you stay too long).”

We asked execs around the country where they like to gather to blow off steam after a tough new business pitch or to celebrate the latest account win. Here’s what they had to say.

Actor Defends Role in Horrific Samsung Video

sansung_bad_ad.png

Everyone’s all abuzz about a recent Samsung video that details the benefits of the brand’s 840 EVO solid-state hard drive. The ad, which is said to feature “possibly the world’s worst actors,” aims to recount the trials and tribulations of owning a slow computer and how the 840 EVO can speed things up.

As many have said, the acting is certainly bad however we have seen much worse. But for this to come from a big brand like Samsung is a bit of a surprise.

One of the actors in the ad, the “businessman,” defends the ad and explains the reasons why it is perceived to have been so bad.

On Reddit, he writes, “Hi. So I’m an actor/model living in Seoul, and im playing the ‘businessman’ in this promo. now, admittedly its not my best work lol, but most people arent aware of just how many factors go into making it this bad. Allow me to elaborate. They force us to speak slowly since this will be dubbed over in Korean, and even when it isnt, most people viewing it will be Korean. They ask us to exaggerate since many Korean people feel thats how we ‘naturally’ act (most people here are not very expressive). Ive worked many jobs where I tried to act naturally only to be told by the director to act more ‘bright’ (ie exaggerate). its how the director and client (in this case, Samsung), WANT us to act. the script is brutal. written by non-native english speakers, and sometimes the PD or director wont even take our suggestions to change some parts so they sound like something a normal native english speaker would say. its a promotional video, not a tv commercial, meaning it will be shown at conventions and expos and in-house. most of the people watching it are korean and thats why they make us do all of the above. edit: almost forgot, shooting took place from 730am – 3am the next day, and by the time they shot the scenes with the girl, she was literally falling asleep in her chair, hence the stoned expression and tone :)”

Actors just doing their jobs, right? No big.

On Heels of IPO Filing, Re/Max Hires Two Ad Agencies

As real estate brokerage Re/Max prepares to go public, it has tapped Publicis Groupe’s Leo Burnett and Lapiz to launch a national ad blitz.

Denver-based Re/Max Holdings this week filed for an initial public offering, after operating as a private company for the 40-plus years it has been in business. It’s a move that comes as the housing marketing continues to improve.

Leo Burnett and Lapiz — which is Leo Burnett’s multicultural agency — will handle TV, radio, digital, social media, out-of-home and print advertising. Both Leo Burnett and Lapiz split advertising duties, including general market advertising; Re/Max is one of Lapiz’s first general market assignments.

Team Detroit Makes a Longboarding Vid for Ford, with Devinsupertramp

Don’t click on this spot unless you want to fall into a Friday K-hole of Devinsupertramp’s extreme sport videos. I have already spent many minutes grimacing at the human bungee slingshot and cringing at “World’s Most Insane Rope Swing Ever!!!” Terrifying.

His collaboration with Ford is no less nail-biting. A Ford Focus ST drives down a winding Utah road while longboarders from Devin’s crew hurtle ahead. They’re graceful and insane, because if they’re going as fast as it seems, they’d rip their skin to nothing and then get promptly run over by a Ford Focus if they fell.

Fears aside, this is a lovely end-of-summer spot, soundtracked by skater song “Carry On,” by Scott & Brendo. It’s the first of Ford and Team Detroit’s #OneTankAdventure campaign, with three more Devin-directed adventures to come.

And okay, it’s Friday. Go ahead, spend some time with tricycle drifters, too.

So Bad, It’s Bad: Samsung Video Is the Cringeworthiest Thing You’ll See Today

Reddit has declared that the Samsung promotional video below features "possibly the world's worst actors," a description that might not be literally true but is close enough. In the ad, for Samsung's 840 EVO solid-state hard drive, three animatronic stereotypes—baffled housewife, studious Asian gamer and corporate ladder-climber—robotically recite a script about how amazing the product is. The result is something that can't really be described in writing, so watch it for yourself below. The original was pulled from YouTube after it became a laughingstock on Reddit, but mirrored versions continue to circulate so that the world can appreciate this impressive feat of faux sincerity.

UPDATE: Here's a note from the Reddit thread, apparently from the "corporate" actor in the spot:

"Hi. So I'm an actor/model living in Seoul, and im playing the 'businessman' in this promo. now, admittedly its not my best work lol, but most people arent aware of just how many factors go into making it this bad. Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer to Retire Within Next 12 Months

Microsoft Corp. Chief Executive Officer Steve Ballmer, who has struggled to adapt to an era of declining personal-computer sales, will retire after more than a decade leading the world’s largest software maker.

Mr. Ballmer, 57, plans to step down within the next 12 months, Redmond, Washington-based Microsoft said today in a statement. Microsoft’s lead independent director, John Thompson, will lead the search for his successor, heading a committee that will also include Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates.

Mr. Ballmer, who took over the CEO role from Gates in 2000, has been working to bolster Microsoft’s performance in areas like mobile computing as consumers gravitate to smartphones and tablets — and away from the PCs that have long been powered by Microsoft’s flagship Windows software. Last month, he presided over the biggest reorganization of Microsoft in a decade in a bid to speed development of hardware and services as the company’s Windows business suffers from the shrinking PC market and poor demand for Windows-based mobile devices.

A agência responsável é a Olson.
