White Cane NGO: Web Blackout

Our task was to help the NGO for blind and visually impaired people “White Cane” and their cause: the purchase of guide dogs. As our budget was very limited, we decided to go with a special digital campaign. The idea was to create a synchronized internet blackout on many major web portals in Serbia, so that the visitors of these portals could literally feel “blind” for one minute. By utilizing completely black takeover banners, the usual content of the portals was transformed into a confusing world of sounds and speech. Using a white cane instead of the typical cursor, the visitors could experience various contents of the web sites, while deprived of the visual component. Finally, the banners were linked to web-site of the client and the page that was explaining the cause of the campaign.

General Mills Gives Frute Brute a Reboot

Cereal box collectors have a reason to howl: Frute Brute is coming back.

General Mills is reintroducing the cereal as part of a limited time offer that will also feature Fruity Yummy Mummy. The two brands will join the marketer’s three other monster cereals — Franken Berry, Boo Berry and Count Chocula — which typically come back every fall as part of a Halloween promotion. It is the first time all five brands will be offered together, the company announced today on its corporate blog.

Frute Brute, known for its werewolf mascot dressed in rainbow overalls, was discontinued in 1982 after an eight year run.

How Israel has Rebranded Amid a Volatile Geopolitical Backdrop

Israel has more than 100 embassies and diplomatic missionaries worldwide, and Ido Aharoni is head of its largest one. As consul general of Israel in New York since 2010, Mr. Aharoni’s job is to cultivate ties on a grassroots level and open America’s eyes to Israel’s culture and industries. He oversees seven departments in the consulate, which was the first office in the world to hold a press conference on Twitter.

Mr. Aharoni launched “Brand Israel” in 2005 when he was serving as consul for media and public affairs at the Israel Consulate in New York. The campaign is meant to “rebrand” Israel, emphasizing its relevance and modernity. Mr. Aharoni, who joined the Israel foreign service in 1991, calls his specialty “country positioning.” In short, he’s worked to define what makes Israel attractive for tourism, foreign investment and export, and then used those advantages to promote his country to relevant audiences.

At Ad Age’s CMO Strategy Summit in San Francisco on Oct. 16, Mr. Aharoni will share how he’s worked to define Israel’s brand and discuss how he deals with the obstacles Israel faces, given its difficult geopolitical situation.

Conde Nast Teams Up With Amazon to Streamline Subscription Process

Conde Nast and Amazon have struck a deal in which the online giant will begin managing print and digital subscriptions for Conde titles, the companies said on Tuesday.

The program, called “All Access,” is meant to simplify the subscription process by sending potential subscribers from the magazines’ websites to Amazon.com, where they log in to their Amazon accounts in order to subscribe.

Amazon will handle the transactions and provide readers with immediate access to magazine content on Kindle Fire, iPad, Android tablets and phones. Conde Nast will continue to handle the delivery of print orders through the Postal Service, the company said.

After Dismal Second Quarter, JC Penney Regroups — Again

Another quarter, another dreadful performance at JC Penney, which will spend more on marketing and prioritize promotions to try to end its losing streak.

The company said it increased marketing expenses in the second quarter in an effort to attract customers who fled stores in droves over the past year. JC Penny said it plans to boost investments in the second half, but did not provide specifics.

CEO Mike Ullman said that because 90% of most department stores’ messaging is promotional, it’s crucial for the retailer to compete head-to-head and ensure its message resonates with consumers on a “deep promotional level.” He added that JC Penney is underdeveloped in social and digital channels.
