ESPN Picks Its 10 Favorite SportsCenter Commercials

ESPN's "This Is SportsCenter" is among the handful of classic sports ad campaigns of all time. Launched in 1995 by Wieden + Kennedy in New York, the campaign—originally inspired by the mockumentary This Is Spinal Tap—hasn't changed much over the years. And why would it? You don't mess with a winning formula.

The premise of the ads, as we've noted before, is that ESPN's Bristol, Conn., offices are the center of the sports universe—a surreal yet mundane fantasy world where athletes and mascots live and work together with anchors and journalists. Where other marketers portray athletes as superhuman, "This Is SportsCenter" presents them as comically, relatably human. Eighteen years and more than 400 spots later, the campaign continues.

As part of the Adweek story linked above, W+K drew up a list of its 10 favorite SportsCenter ads. Now, ESPN has one-upped its agency—devoting a whole special to its 50 favorite SportsCenter spots of all time. The show, airing this Thursday at 8 p.m. ET and hosted by Jason Sudeikis, will feature anecdotes and stories about the top 50, and fans are encouraged to vote for their favorite spot over on Facebook. Sudeikis will announce the winning spot on the show. (More than 1 million votes have been cast so far.)

Check out the program on Thursday, and click the link below for a sneak peek at ESPN's official top 10 favorite "This Is SportsCenter" commercials.

Bloomberg’s Soda Ban Is Blocked Again

A ruling blocking New York’s ban on large sodas was upheld by an appeals court, which said the city’s Board of Health failed to act within the bounds of its authority when it approved the plan.

A unanimous panel of the New York State Supreme Court’s Appellate Division, First Department, in Manhattan today upheld Justice Milton Tingling’s March ruling striking down the city’s plan to cap the size of sugary soft drinks sold in restaurants, movie theaters, stadiums and arenas at 16 ounces a cup.

The city’s Board of Health in September approved Mayor Michael Bloomberg’s plan. Groups representing beverage makers, restaurants and theaters sued to block the plan a month later, calling it “unprecedented interference” with consumer choice.

Campanha viral de “X-Men: Days of Future Past” explora conteúdo sobre a Trask Industries

Collateral Damage

Manning to face 100 years in a cell … the fate for democracy even worse.

An image from the leaked Iraq video posted by Wikileaks

Democracy thrives on transparency. It shrivels, shrinks, becomes myopic and ill when kept in the dark.

Whistleblower Bradley Manning has been found guilty of espionage. His crime: making public what is done in secret. Showing the American people the torn guts, the exploded body parts and visceral reality of war done in America’s name.

Of the 22 charges facing him, Manning was found guilty of 20. He was, though, acquitted of the most serious charge – aiding the enemy. But if he didn’t aid the enemy …then what damage, what crime, what offense did he commit other than attempt to enlighten the American people?

James Ball at the Guardian hits the nail on the head:

The prosecution of Manning was intended to send a signal. If nothing else, it has done that. It has shown that when faced with evidence of its own wrongdoing, the current US administration focuses on punishing
the messenger. It shows the first amendment is easier to honour in the abstract than in reality. And it risks sending a message to nations that routinely imprison, assault or even kill journalists and activists, that when it comes to the crunch, the supposed leader of the free world is not much different.

Is this verdict the final straw of American democracy, the sad and wimpy swan song of an experiment in a type of governance that never really had the chance to grow? Or is this the beginning of our generation’s fight for a new world … Manning the first of us to go all in for the cause.

Revolution is built on sacrifice. The ante just got upped.

For a deeper sense of Bradley’s valor, gall and significance, read Adbusters blog post on Manning written at the beginning of his trial.
