We Know Robert Downey Jr. Can Open A Movie. Can He Save HTC?

Who better to market an all metal smartphone than a superhero with a metal smart suit.

Phone manufacturer HTC has signed “Iron Man” actor Robert Downey Jr. for a two-year, $12 million marketing campaign, according to Bloomberg. “Anyone with a penchant for metal should be able to appreciate its appeal,” said a coy Tom Harlin, HTC’s director of public relations.

Mr. Downey’s persona perfectly aligns with the company’s recent attempts to increase its ad spending and embrace an irreverent underdog image in the wake of market share loss. On-screen, Mr. Downey frequently portrays brash, quick-talking characters. Off-screen, he’s had the kind of career resurgence HTC hopes to replicate in the smartphone market.

A direção é do duvidoso Joshua Michael Stern.

A estreia nos EUA está marcada para 16 de agosto.

Barack Obama

The “Hamlet” President.

From Adbusters #108: The Epic Human Journey: Part 2, Summer

JONATHAN ERNST / REUTERS

In this scary historical moment we’re living through, the world cries out for a visionary, transformative leader… someone who has the gumption and guts – like Franklin D. Roosevelt did in the aftermath of the 1929 crash – to shift paradigms, demolish sacred cows and move the nation in bold new directions.

In his election campaign, Barack Obama signaled that he could be that kind of a President, but as soon he entered the White House, the Washington establishment, the military-industrial complex, Big Finance, Big Pharma, AIPAC, the NRA – that whole corrupt money system of lobbyists, patronage and kickbacks, the revolving door that rules Washington – chewed him up and spat him out again.

After that he was never able to summon the courage to take a stand on any of the big issues. He never brought the torturers to justice, never got Netanjahu to blink on the settlements. He hasn’t closed Guantanamo or made Wall Street pay. He was never able to harness the power of the people behind him cheering him on.

He will go down in history as the Hamlet president, the “to be or not to be” pontificator who could never quite make up his mind… never quite seize the moment and act. Too bad for America… and the rest of us.

Food Network Parts Ways With Paula Deen Over Racial Slurs

Food Network said Friday afternoon that it will part ways with TV chef Paula Deen at the end of June, capping a week of fallout over revelations that she has used racial slurs.

“Food Network will not renew Paula Deen’s contract when it expires at the end of this month,” a spokeswoman said in a statemement, declining to elaborate.

The network cut ties even though Ms. Deen apologized in a pair of videos posted to YouTube earlier Friday. “I want to apologize for everybody for the wrong that I’ve done,” Ms. Deen said in the first video, which ran just 46 seconds.

“I want to apologize for everybody for the wrong that I’ve done,” Ms. Deen said in the video statement.

“Inappropriate hurtful language is totally, totally unacceptable,” she added.

Launchpad NYC Dresses Up Its ‘Darlings’ in an Office Outfit Challenge

We’re no stranger to an agency fashion blog. They seem to pop up fairly often, as they’re the perfect way to practice vanity and self-indulgence until Cannes. Matt Van Hoven (former Agency Spy) and his Vitro colleague Jorge Ramirez competed against one another in a playful Best Dressed Challenge with themes like, “Post Wedding Brunch Chic” and “Vintage,” while BBH NY maintained a now-defunct “Working it at Work” fashion notebook.

To add to the collection, Launchpad NYC has their “Office Outfit Challenge,” where “5 advertising darlings get creative with their closets and pull off a fashion magazine miracle.”

If I were Anna Wintour I would put my sunglasses on and promptly exit the room, but as it is I will say that this is a great exercise in hyperbolic showiness. Whether wearing the print of their choice or daring “unexpected color combinations,” these girls push no limits and make no statements. A JC Penney’s catalogue might provide a better image of innovation.

Sure, it’s all for fun. But if these darlings are representing a boundary-pushing creative agency, they should rise to greater challenges.

Women Make Up Just 22% of Cannes Lions Jurers

cannes_jurors_2013_numbers_150.jpg

Hollie Rapello who pens the Why Moms Rule blog took it upon herself to examine female representation on Cannes Lions Juries. Overall, there are just 70 women serving on juries as compared to 248 men, a 22% representation.

Only one jury, Creative Effectiveness, has equal representation with 8 men and 8 woman.

The juries with the least number of women include Mobile with just one women to 12 and both Innovation and Film Craft with just one woman to nine men each.

While women have certainly made inroads in the marketing and advertising space, it would seem this is not fairly represented in jury make up. When upwards of 70% of household spending in controlled by women, according to The Boston Consulting Group, it would seem all that more important to have women included in the judging of work that is developed to reach them.

The Media Companies Using Tumblr Right, According to Tumblr’s Departing Media Evangelist

As a senior editor at Newsweek, Mark Coatney helped build the magazine’s Tumblr page, earning a following with his chatty and often irreverent posts. Early on, for instance, he breezily asked readers not to expose his Tumblr activity to his boss, then-Newsweek editor Jon Meacham.

When he left Newsweek to join Tumblr itself as its media evangelist in 2010, becoming just its 12th employee, Mr. Coatney took on introducing all kinds of companies to the fledgling platform and teaching them how to use it to better connect with their readers. By the time he decided to leave, Mr. Coatney had helped launch 650 Tumblrs for brands — including nearly all of Conde Nast’s Tumblrs — as well as nonprofits, government organizations and individuals (like Beyonce).

This week, Mr. Coatney told readers of his personal Tumblr page that he was leaving, making him the second early employee to depart since Yahoo struck its $1.1 billion deal for the company (Tumblr Creative Director Jacob Bijani announced his resignation less than two weeks after the Yahoo deal in May.)

Copywriter Wins Free Billboard, Uses It to Hold Crazy URL Contest

Texas copywriter Matt Bull became an ad-industry folk hero of sorts last month, when his first solo client work became an instant Internet sensation. But if you thought his billboard promoting Chicken Scratch restaurant—located "between some trailers and a condemned motel"—was odd, check out his first self-promotional board.

Bull, the owner (and sole employee) of The Department of Persuasion, tells Adweek that the coverage of his work for Chicken Scratch won him even more free publicity in the form of donated ad space. "Clear Channel Outdoor wanted to do something with me after your article," he tells us. "They gave me a month of digital boards to promote myself. I decided on something very, very silly."

As you can see above, the billboard simply says "SlothPunchClub.com." Once again illustrated by artist Elliott Park, the board directs viewers to a blog post by Bull, who says he's going to donate the URL to whomever comes up with the most creative way to use it. "Slothpunchclub.com is your domain to do with as you please," Bull writes in the post. "Anything at all. It could be an online graphic novel, a flash game hub, a text-based MUD, a collection of skewed illustrated poems disguised as children's picture books, a poorly written blog about second-tier sororities, an elaborate mythos for sloth-based fantasy neckbeards. Those are some free starter ideas. It would even make an excellent base for spreading malicious trojans. Not my business, frankly."

Ideas for the URL can be sent to slothpunchclub@gmail.com. Bull is also encouraging the winner and any participants to consider donating to Dallas-based charity Baal Dan, dedicated to helping street children in India.
