Some Brands Show Support After Paula Deen Hires Crisis PR Shop

Paula Deen has hired D.C. crisis firm Smith & Co. as she faces backlash and loses sponsorship deals amid allegations that she has, used racial slurs.

Ms. Deen’s management team reached out to the firm a few days ago, an executive familiar with the matter said, after she had already canceled her planned Friday appearance on “The Today Show” and issued a pair of poorly-received YouTube videos instead.

Smith & Co. CEO Judy Smith, who served as the inspiration for Kerry Washington’s character on ABC’s “Scandal,” declined to comment.

Starcom MediaVest’s Jacob echoes Gottlieb’s call for new metrics

There is a disconnect between what clients are asking for and what media agencies are offering, and it is time to move away from the “old world” media models of yesteryear to improve effectiveness, says Iain Jacob, president of dynamic markets at Starcom MediaVest Group.

East Meets Wild West in Rhett & Link’s Crazy Ad for Chinese Eatery

"Feed me, or I will shoot you and burn down your establishment." How many times have I shouted that at Carl's Jr. and still had to wait for service? The line doesn't work any better for the cowboy in Rhett & Link's commercial for Frontier Wok, a Wild West-themed Chinese eatery in Burbank, Calif. The guy winds up on the losing end of a quick-draw food shootout with the restaurant's manager, felled by the Kung POW! chicken. "That is some tasty Kung POW! chicken. I'm glad I had my last meal at the Frontier Wok," the cowboy says as he expires. Frontier Wok's entrees probably aren't deadly in real life, though the place does promise "Chinese food so good, it'll blow you away," so you never know. The spot sends up both Westerns and Asian martial-arts movies with out-of-sync dubbed dialogue, which is horribly cliched at this point, but still funny. At the end, the manager rides off into the sunset on a small pony, determined no doubt to set up a franchise in the British Isles.

FTC’s Brill Calls for Congress to Legislate New Data Privacy, Stuns Marketers

Big data brokers are “taking advantage of us without our permission.” Those were the words of Federal Trade Commissioner Julie Brill this morning at the Computers, Freedom and Privacy Conference in Washington.

The commissioner, often vocal on data-privacy issues, called on Congress to legislate what she calls a “Reclaim Your Name” program, one that would establish technical controls allowing people to access the information data collectors have stored about them, control how it is shared and correct it when necessary.

The commissioner suggested such a program could operate in tandem with the browser-based Do Not Track standard currently in development. That slow-moving process, however, is under intensifying scrutiny as some World Wide Web Consortium participants question the chances of reaching consensus on key tech and policy elements of DNT, and as Firefox maker Mozilla plans a new approach to DNT with Stanford University.

Here’s Some Quick Clarification on Rosetta Cuts

While we await some word from a certain Publicis Groupe-owned agency regarding cuts (major, we hear), we’ll stick to the same topic for a second and fill you in on what we know regarding another shop within the holding company, namely Rosetta. We were told on the Spy line that some reductions were happening as of yesterday and today, but we’ve been told by sources familiar with the matter that “it’s a small number and not specific to a particular office or department.”

No exact numbers have been revealed, but in a statement, Rosetta adds, “We are currently realigning resources in order to strengthen operating efficiencies across Rosetta and invest for the long term success and growth of our people and agency. Our top line revenue growth continues to be strong as a result of expanded relationships with existing clients and strategic relationships in new business.  In addition, we are currently looking to fill 75 positions across the agency to meet the demands of the market and ensure outstanding operational results moving forward.”

Rosetta still counts its Princeton, NJ office as its headquarters but also houses a handful of offices ranging from New York City to Chicago to San Francisco.

Take Me To My Happy Place, Take Me Fishing

Fishing is something I associate with my childhood and my grandfather, Eldon Burn, in particular. We used to fish for bluegill, crappie, bass and catfish on Nebraska’s man-made lakes. We also fished for salmon and trout on Lake Michigan and walleyed-pike in Minnesota. So, when I see this throwback illustration style used to motivate me, I am in fact moved to fish.
