A candy industry trade group is conducting a PR agency review as health advocates increasingly point to sugar as the top culprit for the nation’s obesity problems.

The Washington D.C.-based National Confectioners Association is currently in talks with four shops, said one person familiar with the matter. According to the executive, the group is looking for both public affairs and consumer-facing marketing support.

Among its many members are Mars Chocolate North America, Mondelez International, Nestle Confections and Snacks and The Hershey Company.

Ever open you oven and it begins talking to you? We didn’t think so. But the dirty oven in this Goo Gone commercial sure has a dirty mouth and has plenty to say. Choice phrases include, “Ooh, German sausage jokes, they’re the wurst. Get it, the wurst?” and “Are you checking out my rack?”

Check out Marcus Thomas-created commercial for those gems and more.

Classic Roger Ebert Outtakes, Reviews and Slams

When Roger Ebert died Thursday after a long struggle with cancer, tributes and obituaries quickly recalled his personality, perception and and sense of humor (he once won The New Yorker’s Cartoon Caption Contest).

We’ve gathered some classic moments, outtakes and conversations.

In which he lets Gene Siskel know why he gave “Full Metal Jacket” a thumbs down but “Benji the Hunted” a thumbs up (watch out for foul language):

Roger Ebert, First Film Critic to Receive Pulitzer, Dies at 70

Roger Ebert, the Pulitzer Prize-winning film critic famous for his thumbs-up, thumbs-down method of judging movies, has died. He was 70.

O motivo? Ninguém sabe. Mas assista mesmo assim.

Thighvertising and Other Japanese Marketing ‘Trends’ You Shouldn’t Fall For

Japan has a global reputation as an originator of trends. While that’s true in many cases, the global media tend to latch onto the most insane examples that defy any sort of logic. Let’s do a quick rundown of some of the more outrageous things news outlets have been trying to pass off as trends in Japan:

Geeks dating their pillows in public

Geeks marrying their video game girlfriends

Psycho

Anti-capitaLIST: Part 1.

ADRIAN SAKER

How can we resist the nightmare of global capitalism and the lifestyle it demands? How can we jam the dominant logic of consumerism, imperial war, an abused Third World, and an ember planet? While no doubt daunting, we offer a guide in three parts. Each third targets a different site where capital rears its Achilles heel, where creative forms of resistance take shape and reveal new ways to live.

Under the headings, PSYCHO, ECO and CORPO this list proceeds apace in the twilight of postindustrial capital. We don’t have time as a luxury anymore; in fact, we’re living the end times. So as you use, combine, or complement the following guidelines to counter the system, act now, act fast.

Part I: PSYCHO

Cleanse your mind of the detritus left by consumerist thinking

Mental illness not just a malfunction of the individual

What is the administering of mental health care but a societal conceit to regulate its problematic members? Sure, it does some good; no one questions that counselors can ease the pain of grief, loss, anxiety and the like. But as therapy masquerades as one thing it can too easily work in the service of conformity. Look no further than the gauge used to determine when mental illness is a problem: when it cuts into work time.

Meanwhile, we’re made to feel like symptoms are the product of our own deficiency. They’re individualized, affecting autonomously every human cog in the consumerist ecosystem. But radical psychiatrist RD Laing felt differently, stating “mental disorder is a reaction to the impossible demands that societies place upon certain individuals.” So if millions visit psychologists to tamp down their traumas, why can’t it be our mass culture that’s sick?

Question logical foundations, like “democracy”

Don’t merely accept that we live in a “democracy.” In the West, our democracy is a mirage maintained by Super PACs. This bourgeois democracy is infirm: it’s on the outs.

We need a new grassroots participatory system. In the meantime question the construction of the current political system, and ask others what they believe democracy should mean.

Recognize the plight with others of like mind

Lists are catchy. Whenever you read one you’re probably like, “yeah, I can do that” before forgetting the directions when leaving for work.

Fair enough – so figure out for yourself if you want change. Figure out what makes you unhappy, and if being trapped under capitalist relations and the state that supports them is airing out your bike tires, resolve to change it.

You may feel as though you exist in a vacuum. Be strong and know there are others who feel similarly. Find a way to connect with them.

Facebook to Debut First TV Ad to Promote ‘Home’ for Android

Facebook is making a big bet that people want to be surrounded by content from their friends each and every time they look at their phones, and it’s teeing up a marketing campaign that will include its first-ever TV advertising.

With its new experience for Android, “Home,” Facebook has introduced an appealing new mobile canvas that could potentially cause its mobile revenue to soar — if it can find a way to serve ads onto the lock screens of people’s phones without bothering them. And also if enough mobile consumers want to be able to see a constantly updating stream of updates from their Facebook friends and to be able to message anywhere on their phones with those friends (depicting by icons of their Facebook profiles called “chatheads.”)

CEO Mark Zuckerberg suggested that “Home” is a means of making Facebook more engrossing and also referred to the size of the opportunity in terms of the captive audience available. He referenced a statistic that the average mobile consumer looks at their lock screen 100 times per day.

Dos Equis Moves Cinco De Mayo to May 2

Is Cinco de Mayo falling on a Sunday really that bad a thing? After all, St. Paddy’s Day did this year, and we didn’t count a discernible drop in drunken debauchery. Still, Dos Equis seems to think it’s a really bad thing, so it’s enlisted “The Most Interesting Man in the World” to start a movement to switch it to May 2, “Dos de Mayo.”

An online video asks fans to mobilize everyone they know to spread the word. The company is also hosting a Dos de Mayo party in L.A., and fans have a chance to win a trip at this Maxim site.
