Google Turns in Soft Quarter as Search Shifts to Mobile

Google’s profits fell 20% last quarter, but CEO Larry Page led with the good news on a hectic day for the company: mobile is now an $8 billion run-rate business and the company cleared a big revenue milestone.

“At just 14 years old, we cleared our first $14 billion revenue quarter,” Mr. Page said. “Not bad for a teenager.”

The big numbers masked a less-than-dazzling quarter, however, and Google missed both revenue and profit estimates and released its earnings hours early in a gaffe it blamed on the printer. As Mr. Page noted, “I’m sorry for the scramble today.”

Pfizer Consolidates Global Creative Duties At Three Holding Companies

As one of the largest marketers in the world, pharma giant Pfizer has long worked with an array of marketing partners, but that list will be drastically cut over the course of the next 18 months. After a review process that Ad Age first reported in April, the company has decided to consolidate creative advertising duties globally with a trio of holding companies: WPP, Omnicom Group and Publicis Groupe.

“As a result of our periodic assessment of our agency partners, we have decided to consolidate our brand marketing into fewer holding companies,” a spokeswoman said.

She declined to comment further but acknowledged the move is global and that the consolidation will spark a wave of shifts on various assignments that will take some time. The shifts are likely not to be complete until end of 2013 or beginning of 2014.

Newsweek CEO: Dumping Print ‘Liberates Us’

There’s been a deathwatch for the print edition of Newsweek ever since IAC CEO Barry Diller hinted in July that print would go away or be scaled back in 2013. That happened today when Editor Tina Brown and CEO Baba Shetty announced that Dec. 31 would be Newsweek’s last print issue. Mr. Shetty, who officially joined The Newsweek Daily Beast Company just days ago, is now charged with turning the storied print brand into a profitable digital-only business.

As a former ad exec, Mr. Shetty knows as well as anyone how difficult the environment is for digital advertising. He also knows how hard it is to charge anyone for anything on the web, especially high-end journalism that competes with plenty of “good enough” content that’s ubiquitous and free.

We talked to Mr. Shetty about how he thinks an all-digital Newsweek will work.

Shattered Crystal: NBC’s Monkey Won’t Rule Prime Time

If TV learns anything from the NBC sitcom “Animal Practice,” it will be this: Just because test audiences really like a monkey featured in the show’s initial episodes during previews doesn’t mean the program will fare well once it gets on the air.

NBC convinced ad buyers to support its new fall sitcom, “Animal Practice,” by bragging that Crystal, a capuchin monkey with a prominent role in the series, was the highest-testing characteramong audiences for its 2012 fall lineup. But the comedy has limped into autumn, prompting the Peacock to cancel the series and replace it with the second season of “Whitney” starting November 14th.

It’s not as if NBC didn’t promote the heck out of “Animal Practice,” which is set in a veterinary hospital. The network ran an ad-free preview of the program during the closing ceremonies of this year’s London Olympics (a move that forced viewers to wait around to see The Who play from the U.K.). In trumpeting the program during the upfront and on its air, NBC may have inadvertently made its capuchin a symbol of the new TV season

About 6,600 Political Ads Have Aired in 2012: Here Are Five Standouts

At Kantar Media CMAG, we’ve watched more political ads than anyone else in America. It’s a hard-earned distinction.

Our firm tracks political-advertising spending, placement and content. To track content, we view new ads every day and assign a series of tags to each based on what they say and show. If a candidate for dogcatcher has the money to put an ad on broadcast TV, we see it and tag it.

To date in 2012, we’ve processed about 6,600 unique advertisements in races for municipal office up to president, and in issue campaigns ranging from how to pay for a new bridge in Detroit to how to define marriage in several states. At this point in the election cycle, we process as many as 400 completely new as well as revised ads every day.

The Prize of a Lifetime: uma campanha simples e eficiente contra o câncer de mama

Simples, singelo e eficiente.
