A report from Melbourne’s Swinburne University of Technology finds bloggers are less isolated, more connected to a community and more satisfied with friendships. (Probably because, if not for blogging, we would have no friends.)
Imagine this. You send out a bunch of promo stuff: schwag, catalogs, merchandise. Every item is equipped with a small chip. Next, you create a TV commercial and insert an “inaudible 200MHz molecular vibration sound mat”. When you run the spot on TV, the inaudible signal activates the chip, which in turn jams the signal from your remote control blocking people from switching channels. When your commercial stops playing, the remote goes back to normal.
Too bad it ain’t a real product, but a campaign by a communications agency. Very convincing, though. The next version of the chip should also emit signals that block microwave ovens and suppress bathroom urges.
It’s not entirely science fiction, though. Here’s a video of a working TV remote jammer and instructions for building one, and a diagram:
Charles Handy, an Irish author specialising in organisational behaviour and management, used the stage NPR’s Marketplace provided him to call for reform.
The tall towers that house our corporations are the new palaces of our day, the places where real power resides, but those towers are full of paradoxes. Made of glass, you can’t see inside. They’re pillars of our democracy, but they are run as totalitarian states. Their names are reduced to a set of initials. Their leaders are unknown to those outside. They are accountable, for the most part, to other institutions that sit in similarly anonymous towers. To the average person, they are foreign entities shrouded in mystery. It is no wonder that we look at them with suspicion, touched with envy.
When you see it laid bare like this, it’s hard to justify what we in Adlandia often do. Namely, the putting of a pretty face and a nice voice on top of these lurking, shadowy entities.

This 1970s glimpse into McDonald’s Land looks like the result of someone dropping acid with H.R. Pufnstuf, and the trippy music extolling the virtues of “french fry thatches†doesn’t help. Not to mention that any kid in his or her right mind would be terrified of a cop with a giant, grinning hamburger face. There are logistical issues, too: If the kids spend too long in the burger patches or under the milkshake volcano, they won’t be hungry by the time they get to McDonald’s. But that’s McDonald’s fault for franchising someplace where their entire menu grows naturally.
