Dunlop Volleys

The site for the new Dunlop Volleys campaign is the first one in a while where I’ve actually taken the URL from a poster, and actually visited it. Hey, the system does work!

dunlop0.gif

I’ve always liked volleys. They’re a real basic sweet shoe you can’t go wrong with. If you’re a kid at school, your mum can buy them at Big W but you still won’t get bashed up for it. And if you’re an indie inner city skater, you can also wear them without fear of sneaker snobbery.

They’ve based the whole campaign on a middle aged guy in a knit sweater playing the tunes of classic songs, by making fart noises with his hands (you can’t get much more un-snobbery than that eh?). Ending with one of the best taglines I’ve seen since the 60s: “Volleys – Exceptionally Average”.

I like their site too. Nothing amazing about it. But it works, is unoffensive. And is worth a look. Straight into it without any fuss.

Just like the shoes, I spose.

Blockbuster Makes Public Bid to Acquire Circuit City

NEW YORK (AdAge.com) — Blockbuster has said it wants to be a media company, and now it's tipping its hand as to how it wants to accomplish that — by acquiring Circuit City Stores. An offer of between $6 and $8 per share in cash was presented in a letter to Philip Schoonover, chairman-CEO of the beleaguered Circuit City chain on Feb. 17, with the unanimous approval of Blockbuster's board of directors. Blockbuster made the offer public after Circuit City failed to provide items needed for Blockbuster to complete its due diligence.

Economic Issues Affecting Advertising Needs

Economic Woes in Advertising

As far as wise spending is concerned, the current economic crisis that the world is facing has forced most businesses to become more budget-conscious as far as ad spending is concerned. We all know the large amount of investment needed to create promotions for a business’ product or service but no thanks to the compounding woes of financial constraints, some sectors just have to bite the bullet and find other means of marketing support.

Such practice is evident especially in regions like the United Kingdom. You just have to shelve these advertising programs for the meantime and hope that the economic outlook picks up and help justify the expensive costs of advertising support needed by most business entities today.

Sony’s new ‘Foam City’ ad isn’t the ‘Balls’

When advertisers find creative success, it’s hard to stop them before they go back to the well too often. Sony had a certifiable hit with a cool Bravia commercial showing thousands of balls teeming down a San Francisco street. Then, it followed up with a so-so paint effort. Now, it’s officially jumped the shark with foam (above). I guess the ad has something to do with cameras. PSFK is none too impressed, that’s for sure. It calls the spot “all froth,” even after Sony flew one of its contributors out to the shoot, as if it were a movie set. Maybe Sony should hire Christo for its next commercial.

Chocolate Better Than Blogs

BlogHer released the BlogHer/Compass Partners 2008 Social Media Benchmark Study today, which reveals new insights into the power of the blogosphere and the significant role it plays in the lives of U.S. women.

Women are so passionate about blogging that large percentages of women said they would give something up to keep the blogs they read and/or write:

  • 42% would give up their i-Pod
  • 43% would give up reading the newspaper
  • 20% would give up chocolate (some things are sacred)

“Several recent surveys indicate that our trust in institutions is declining. We are losing trust in the government, politicians, the media and many corporations. But as it turns out, we trust each other,” said Elisa Camahort Page, BlogHer co-founder and COO.
