Apparently, Santa is Pissed Off About Felix Baumgartner

Our latest ridiculous holiday item comes courtesy of full-service shop, Laughlin Constable.

You might remember Felix Baumgartner receiving credit for setting the world’s record in skydiving for Red Bull and breaking the sound barrier in the process. Baumgartner’s freefall from the edge of space was touted as one of a kind. But Santa Clauss (who happens to be pretty tatted-up) is pissed about that, explaining in the above video, entitled “Project Northus Polus,” that his elf jumpers have been diving from space for years. Why should Baumgartner get all the credit? So this year Santa is documenting the process of becoming a jumper elf, and he wants your help. Head on over to Laughlin’s holiday site, read the jumper profiles and cast your vote. Then, tune in on Christmas day to watch the winner’s space jump. There’s also a Summit Plummet game you can play on the site for some holiday-themed fun. We’ve got to say, we’ve seen our share of unusual holiday items this year, but nothing like Project Northus Polus. Thanks for keeping things fresh, Laughlin Constable.

SS+K’s Secret Santa Shop is Pretty Sweet

SS+K

This feels like a Friday item, but if you have a spare moment, you might want to head on over to Pinterest and check out SS+K’s Secret Santa Shop. It’s simple to use: just look through their inventory of funny gifts, choose one and click through to its order form, then fill out the form and wait for it to arrive. You’ll be the best Secret Santa at your office, with gift choices like a pickle key chain, a bottle of Jameson, and a “Ring For Sex” bell. You might want to hurry though, because a lot of the best gifts have already been claimed — including the filthy cock soap, Pumping Iron DVD, “The Nutcropolis,” and the Potty Putter. Oh well, there’s always next year.

WestJet, studio m Stage ‘Christmas Miracle’

Well, the holiday items keep pouring in today. This one is a “Christmas miracle” from our neighbors to the north.

Canadian airline WestJet and studio m collaborated to give visitors to Toronto and Hamilton International Airports a Christmas miracle. They discovered what more than 250 Calgary-bound passengers had on their wish lists, with help from a tech-savvy Santa. Then 175 Westjet employees acted as elves, taking notes on passenger’s Christmas wishes, shopping, wrapping the gifts and delivering them to the Calgary airport ahead of the gifts’ recipients. When the passengers arrived at baggage claim in Calgary, they were met with a Christmas miracle — the gifts they had wished for were there waiting for them — addressed from Santa, of course. As the wrapped presents went around the carousel, Santa himself showed up to wish everyone a merry Christmas.

Making baggage claim fun is truly a miracle, and WestJet clearly jumped through hoops to pull this stunt off. It made a lot of peoples’ days, and the kids who got presents from Santa that day will probably remember it forever. Not a bad way to engender brand loyalty, but intentions aside, WestJet staged a really heartwarming event. The genuineness of the gesture and its perfect execution more than make up for any excess cheesiness in the video, which plays on the classic poem “A Visit from St. Nicholas” (better known by its first line, “‘Twas the Night Before Christmas”). Stick around for “Santa’s Bloopers” after the jump, but beware, the cheesiness increases exponentially.  continued…

Anybody Need an Organic, Grass-Fed, Free-Range Xmas Tree?

We’re not sure who is behind this one, but somebody has created a site that claims to sell “organic, grass-fed, free range, non-caged, small batch Christmas trees.” Check out the above video for an idea of what kind of ridiculousness to expect. It appears today is the day of Christmas parodies — unless, of course, this site is completely serious.

On the site, they calm any concerns you might have that your tree wasn’t given enough space. Each tree is given a 20 x 20 foot space so that they  can “roam free in their spaces to fulfill their spirit.” That’s nice, but how were the trees fertilized? Well, that’s completely up to you. You can choose to have your tree fertilized by “organic cat, organic dog or organic cow manure”; or, if you order your tree six months in advance, you can “bring your own organic animal to fertilize your treeling.” You’ll also be glad to know that the trees are kept on a “strict grass, water and sunlight only diet,” so you can be sure they’re pesticide free. Head on over to http://organicchristmas.co/ to choose your customized organic tree now, and let us know how that works out for you.

Quietroom Imagines Santa as a Brand with Satirical Holiday Site

*Santa* Brand BookU.K. based shop Quietroom re-imagines Santa — changed to *Santa* because “the introductory asterisk reminds customers of a snowflake alighting on the eyelash of a fawn,” while the terminating asterisk “points customers to the polar star, and hence the birth of dreams” — as an international brand at a new site purporting to be Santa’s brandbook.

It’s kind of a weird idea, but Quietroom pulls it off with distinctly British dry humor, and parts of it are pretty funny. Quietroom does an excellent job mocking how brands talk about themselves. Some highlights include “Our brand house is constructionalised on a foundation of deceit, which is sunk deep within a bedrock of gullibility,” the white on white logo, the “Mandatory Venn diagrams” and the brand assets schematics asking “Who else is occupying *Santa*’s space?” (turns out it’s Hagrid), measuring fattiness and beardiness. If you’re in the holiday spirit and are looking for some laughs, it’s worth a few minutes to go check it out. Let us know what you think in the comments section.

ESPN Taps ‘Santa Snoop’ to Narrate New NBA Christmas Spot

ESPN has a new in-house effort promoting their NBA Christmas lineup, and Calvin Broadus has yet another name. Santa Snoop narrates the effort, which riffs off the classic poem “A Visit from St. Nicholas” (better known by its first line, “‘Twas the Night Before Christmas”).

The NBA Christmas spot is about as straightforward as it gets, supplementing Snoop’s narration with highlights of the teams featured in the Christmas day matchups. It all works, thanks mostly to Santa Snoop’s immediately recognizable voice. Who doesn’t love to hear this this guy? He could narrate a shopping list and make it sound intriguing. Beyond that, I really like the idea of Santa Snoop. He’s probably skinny enough to actually fit down a chimney, and I imagine he brings the kind of treats Santa normally wouldn’t feel comfortable trafficking in. So keep an eye out for Santa Snoop this Christmas morning and if you’re a hoops fan, tune in to the NBA on ESPN and ABC. The opening game between the Brooklyn Nets and the Chicago Bulls tips off at noon, followed by a doubleheader on ABC (Knicks/Thunder, then Heat/Lakers), and capped off with a prime-time doubleheader on ESPN, with the San Antonio Spurs hosting the Houston Rockets at 8 p.m., followed by the Golden State Warriors hosting the Los Angeles Clippers at 10:30 p.m. Credits after the jump. continued…

As Long as There’s Internet, 360i’s Holiday Party Will Never End

How can a party never end? Well, when you create dozens of Vines of your employees dancing and post them on a website called Non-Stop Dance Spot, the evidence takes on an air of permanence, as long as the server bills and domain checks are paid. This feels like Friday news, but in the coming season of office parties, we thought it would be worthwhile to show you what’s going on at Dentsu-owned 360i: A lot of two-stepping, some spinning, and mild hip thrusting that gets the job done. The website subs out the Vines every six seconds, so there’s always something new to look at. Somebody put a lot of effort into this silliness. I’m writing about this silliness. But even though it’s silly, it’s certainly unique as far as office parties are concerned.

Nike, W+K Portland Unveil Star-Studded ‘Winning in a Winter Wonderland’ Spot

W+K Portland tapped some of the world’s greatest athletes for their new holiday spot touting the advantages of Nike Hyperwarm Performance Baselayer, directed by Rupert Sanders. ”Winning in a Winter Wonderland” features the talents of Giants defensive end Justin Tuck, skier Julia Mancuso, snowboarder Scotty Lago, soccer stars Alex Morgan and Sydney Leroux, and former Yankees second baseman Robinson Cano, who now appears to be headed to Seattle. Ohio State football coach Urban Meyer also makes a brief cameo appearance.

While undeniably cheesy (hey, it’s the holidays) the spot does an admirable job at promoting the Nike Hyperwarm Performance Baselayer. People are prone to listen to endorsements from star athletes, and W+K got a wide, varied group together for the spot. They emphasize that the Nike Hyperwarm Performance Baselayer makes playing in cold, harsh conditions seem almost enjoyable by keeping you warm without restricting movement, perfectly matching the song selection. “Winning in a Winter Wonderland,” of course, changes the words of the holiday classic, which gets a bit cringe-worthy in spots but mostly comes across as cheesy holiday fun. The words are sung by the star athletes in the spot, mostly while in action, and they seem to have a lot of fun with it — which makes it hard to hate.

The campaign features both a one minute and thirty second version of the spot, as well as a digital takeover and social media elements.”Winning in a Winter Wonderland” premiered during college football’s Big Ten NCAA Championship game and will run throughout the holiday season. Credits after the jump.  continued…

RTO+P, Sprout Create Honest ‘Holiday MOMents’ for Stressed Moms

MOMents_HolidayJoy_2

The winter holidays are usually presented as a series of idyllic, perfect family moments. But most of us know better.

Red Tettemer O’Connell + Partners teamed up with Sprout, the 24 hour preschool channel for parents and kids, to create “Holiday MOMents,” which they describe as “a site for moms to customize and share their very own moments with kids and their moms.” Read: awkward moments. The campaign was built around “consumer insight” (brought to you by Captain Obvious) showing how stressful and overwhelming the holiday season can be for moms with young children.

The site allows users to choose from a list of templates, including “Holiday Cheers and Tears,” ““’Tis the season to be messy,” “The Hostess with the MostStress,” and “Post Dinner Nap Time the New Family Tradition.” Visitors to the site then upload their imperfect holiday moment, and instantly have an honest holiday e-card on their hands. It’s a simple, fun idea tailored perfectly to Sprout’s audience. (Although I can’t help thinking fathers might feel a bit left out.)

RTO+P have also created a holiday giveaway campaign called MerryThon, which you can find on Sprout’s Facebook and Pinterest pages. The campaign, which started Wednesday and will run until December 24th, features a different prize given away every day. Also part of MerryThon is a daily craft or activity featuring one of Sprout’s popular characters. Sprout’s holiday campaign will also feature mobile and display ads. Credits and an additional “Holiday MOMent” below.  continued…

At The Glenn Group, Part II of Card Charity is Even Gooder

As far as titles go, Good [for goodness sake] Part II #evengooder is up there, and by up there, I’m not sure if I mean awesome or terrible. It’s definitely up there, though. All of this philanthropic goodness comes from The Glenn Group, specifically Diego Sabogal, a graphic designer and artist, who is creating original holiday cards that anyone can bid on, starting at $50, during a December 9 auction. All of the proceeds will be donated to feed hungry people in Nevada.

The Part II #evengooder campaign owes last year’s original Good [for goodness sake] some credit. The 2013 auction raised $1,000 in one day. This year, bidders will be able to target their sights on custom sets of holiday cards and prints, including Santa and Rudolph dressed in yellow Breaking Bad jumpsuits while cooking meth in the desert. For goodness sake, that’s good. You can do some early bidding on items here. Screengrab below:

Zulu Alpha Kilo’s ‘Proof of Santa’ App Raises Money for Make-A-Wish Canada

If you’re looking for ways to “prove” to your young one that Santa is real, you should check out Zulu Alpha Kilo’s free “Kringl” app.

The app allows parents to create their own personal Christmas video scenes, which they can then share on YouTube, Facebook or Twitter. Users begin by selecting one of five Santa vignettes, then film a chosen location, and finally insert Santa, adjusting for lighting and size so that he fits seamlessly into the scene. They can then show their children Santa’s magical visit, dispelling any doubts the kids may feel about Saint Nick’s existence. The free app also collects donations for Make-A-Wish Canada, for those in the giving spirit. It’s a cute idea, and hopefully people will be pleased enough with the app that they’ll feel compelled to donate.

Check out the above video to see a preview of the app in action, along with a variety of adorable responses. Credits after the jump.  continued…

BBDO NY, Champs Sports Help Kids Hack Their Wish Lists into Their Parents’ Browsers

BBDO NY’s new holiday campaign for Champs Sports helps kids hack their wish lists into their parents’ browsers, through fake viral videos and a browser extension that turns all banner ads into ads for their wish list. The campaign is a mix of sneaky and clever, and kids whose wish lists are full of Champs merchandise should be happy about this one.

The 56 second video promoting the campaign (see above) features Jon Gruden, who introduces himself as a “football coach, TV personality, and overall tough guy.” Gruden always gets what he wants for Christmas, because all he really wants are pork rinds. He appeals to kids to make sure their parents see their wish list via “Hard Hinting,” so they don’t end up getting a clarinet, instead of the Jordan Retro 1 they asked for. (Hey, what’s wrong with the clarinet?) Gruden then goes on to describe Champs Sports’ two methods of Hard Hinting: viral video hacks and banner ad takeovers.

Although Champs Sports does have products for girls, this ad is clearly aimed squarely at the young male, sports fan market (the only audience that doesn’t find Jon Gruden overwhelmingly obnoxious). You have to wonder a little bit about targeting such a specific demographic, but then I suppose that audience accounts for a lot of Champs’ business this time of year. It just might have made sense to do so in a way that wasn’t so alienating to everybody else. While the hacking your wishlist to get your parents attention schtick is pretty clever (and I’m sure kids will appreciate it), I imagine a few parents will feel it crosses the line. And they’re the ones ultimately doing the shopping, right?

JCPenney Jingles with the Public For USO Charity

Screen Shot 2013-12-05 at 12.01.47 AM

Since Black Friday fever is subsiding for a bit until the Christmas rush kicks back up, we can stop paying attention to Kmart’s Jingle Balls commercial and focus instead on brand philanthropy. Now that JCPenney signed a few free agents – Doner, EVB, Victors & Spoils – to take over their creative duties, the department store is headlining “Jingle Mingle” a collaborative musical project tied to USO holiday donations. It appears that EVB and Victors & Spoils took the reins on this one, and the Boulder-based team was led by Noah Clark and Steve Babcock.

There’s some vanilla exposition on the campaign’s site from country singer Blake Shelton, which is almost worth watching just to hear him say “Santa Pipes.” That’s not a phrase. But users can record their own versions of Silent Night” before a big televised rendition on December 19 meant to raise the spirits of US troops. There’s also a monetary donation for each submission that’s ultimately capped at $100,000. It’s for a good cause. It lets people sing without bothering strangers with bah humbug looks on their faces. And nobody has to stand in a line at 3 AM for a new Xbox. Happy holidays and Santa Pipes to all.

Blind Item: Is Holiday Party Time Dead?

sadsanta

From our distant view, it appears that the agency holiday party scene is a bit quieter this year than most. Then again, maybe we’ve just lost our luster, but this little note from a notable agency was sent our way from a seemingly distressed soul who prefaced his or her tip with “Christmas is cancelled at <redacted>.” We’re not sure if things are more low-key this year, but is your agency sending memos like this? Perhaps our tipster is being a bit oversensitive, but feel free to chime in.

“This is to wish everyone a Happy Thanksgiving and, as it coincides, Chanukah.

To remind, we are closed tomorrow and Friday  in observance. As the roads are slick  and storms persist please use your discretion in departing this afternoon, but safety first is the primary concern.

You may have noticed that we have yet to send a Hold the Date for the Holiday Party. Given how short the post-Thanksgiving period will be, only three weeks, we’d like to postpone the party until later, in 2014 when we hope to have some good things to share and time to enjoy it.

So for now, rest up over  Thanksgiving, know that we’ll have a sprint to the finish line and after the  break can return to a New Year and a chance to celebrate the possibilities.

Happy Thanksgiving.”

Wondersauce Reimagines the Yule Log

Digital design/development shop Wondersauce and Dan Savage (no, not that Dan Savage but this one) have spearheaded a new spin on the yule log, created by President and C.E.O. of WPIX, Inc. Fred M. Thrower in 1966 as a gift to apartment-dwelling New Yorkers. Yule Log 2.0 re-imagines the yule log”through a collection of short films by illustrators, animators, directors, and creative coders.”

The style and quality of the animations vary widely, but they should all make you feel warm and toasty. Some take a relatively straightforward approach to depicting a yule log, while others — such as “Octopusmas,” “Thermofile,” “Cosmic Log” and “Dear Seer” — take the concept to unexpected places. Cultural references also abound, as in “Log OS 7.0,” “Eames Yule,” “Yulecraft,” and “Vince Guaraldi’s Living Room.” It’s a fun little project, and a good way for the 66 graphic artists involved to strut their stuff. You’ll be surprised by their inventive twists on the yule log, as well as the sheer quantity of content for the project. We’ve included a few of our favorites above and after the jump, but head on over Yule Log 2.0 for the full experience. continued…

LA Ad Execs Reveal Favorite Xmas Childhood Memories for thinkLA, Toys for Tots

Nonprofit collaborative thinkLA has a fun social media campaign promoting their Holiday Gala this Thursday, Dec. 5. The campaign features LA ad executives — like Joe Baratelli (featured above), EVP/CCO at RPA (well, actually, it’s all RPA at the moment)– sharing their favorite holiday memories in 15 second long videos. We’ve included a few of our favorites, but you can check out the rest here, or follow thinkLA on Facebook or Twitter. The videos are a quick, fun way to get in the holiday spirit, if that’s your sort of thing. And this is all being done for a good cause.

According to the parties involved, the LA advertising community and thinkLA put together the second largest T0ys for Tots drive in Southern California (around 1,000 toys). Toy collection bins are making the rounds at agencies this week, and will continue collecting toys until December 17th. But the biggest Toys for Tots push will come during the Holiday Gala this Thursday. So check out the holiday videos (Lisa Herdman and J. Barbush are featured after the jump), and if you’re in Southern California this Thursday head on over to the Holiday Gala with something to donate to Toys for Tots. We hear thinkLA throws a great party, so why wouldn’t you? continued…

Holiday Season Ushers in Another Xmas Price Index from Deutsch NY, PNC

With Thanksgiving over (and  Hanukkah currently underway), the 2013 winter holiday season is upon us, and with it comes Deutsch NY’s annual Christmas Price Index for PNC. In case you don’t know, the Christmas Price Index shows the actual cost of all the gifts mentioned in the ubiquitous (and somewhat annoying) carol, “The Twelve Days of Christmas.”

For the Christmas Price Index’s 30th anniversary this year, Deutsch NY decided to offer up something a little different. Visitors to the PNC Christmas Price Index website will be given the opportunity to digitally build and customize their own versions of the gifts from the carol. The 3-D Gift Maker features twelve toys with customizable accessories, all designed by Invisible Creature. Visitors to the site will be given the opportunity to win “24 3-D custom designed toys over the course of 12 days.” If this sounds exciting to you, you better get started, as the contest only lasts until December 13th.

As for the actual index itself, 2013 shows a 7.7% increase from last year, with the current cost of Christmas listed as $27,393.17. That would be the cost of one verse of the song, but since the song has many repetitions the “True Cost of Christmas” (counting each repetition) comes out to $114,651.18. There’s good news for fans of partridges and/or pear trees, however: the cost of a partridge in a pear tree is now $199.99, down 2.4% from last year. So buy now. It’s not a good year to be in the market for nine ladies dancing however, as the current cost is $7552.84, up a full 20% from last year. That cash in your pocket just doesn’t buy as many pipers piping as it used to. Check out a couple of stills, along with credits, after the jump. continued…

And Now, Some Turkey Pick-Up Lines Courtesy of Lowe Campbell Ewald

The friendly folks over at Lowe Campbell Ewald, who were named AOR for LifeLock last month, would like to wish you a happy holiday by sharing “How to pick up the right turkey this Thanksgiving.”

In the above video, the Campbell Ewald folks share turkey pick-up lines in a Thanksgiving-themed display of cringe-humor. Many of them are alterations on oft-heard bad pick-up lines, such as “Your drumsticks must be tired, because you’ve been running through my mind all day.” and “Are you a Tennessee turkey? Because you’re the only ten I see.” It helps add to the goofiness that the employees involved are all wearing turkey hats. (Where can we get those?) My personal favorite might be the straightforward, “I’m gonna gobble, gobble, gobble you up,” mostly for the great delivery. I think you probably get the idea: if you found any of those worth a chuckle you’ll probably enjoy the video. Some of these could border on sexual harassment, so be careful when employing these lines on the turkeys in your life.

The worst of the pick-up lines featured is probably, “You’re no side dish, you’re my main course.” Well, of course the turkey is the main course. That’s how Thanksgiving works. This bothers me far more than it should, but don’t let that dissuade you from watching Lowe Campbell Ewald’s 1:16 of Thanksgiving goofiness. And if that’s not enough holiday humor for you, check out Firehouse’s “Happy Twerky Day” and let us know which you liked better. Happy Thanksgiving, everybody.

BBDO, AT&T Debut ‘Pet Turkey’ for ‘It’s Not Complicated’

BBDO’s “It’s Not Complicated”series for AT&T has been one of the most recognizable campaigns on television for a while now, offering up different variations on the “kids saying cute, funny things in a classroom discussion” theme with straight man Beck Bennett. Indeed, the campaign has been so ubiquitous and well-received that it basically landed him a spot on SNL.

The agency’s latest, Thanksgiving-themed “Pet Turkey,” while enjoyable, is not the greatest effort in the series. If you’re a fan of the approach, you’ll probably enjoy this new one; if you’re getting tired of this direction, chances are it won’t do anything to dissuade you.

“Pet Turkey” sees Bennett asking the group of kids, “What’s better on Thanksgiving?” When one boy suggests, “a pet turkey,” Bennett offers his rational take on that answer. Again, nothing new here, just more of the same approach from BBDO. Since this brand of cute funny has worked so well for them in the past, it’s understandable that they don’t see the need to change things up. But something about “Pet Turkey” makes it feel like BBDO is treading water, like the approach is finally losing steam and they need to inject “It’s Not Complicated” with some fresh ideas if they want to prolong its shelf life. Although with Bennett’s star on the rise, the campaign’s days may already be numbered.

“Pet Turkey” will debut this Sunday, November 24th and will run throughout the Thanksgiving holiday season. Credits after the jump. continued…

McGarryBowen Debuts Three Ridiculous Holiday Spots for Sears

It seems that the fight for the craziest, most absurd holiday ad is in full force, with McGarryBowen Chicago being the latest agency to throw their hat in the ring with three new spots for Sears that introduce us to “The Denskies.”

While Draftcb’s currently causing controversy with its Joe Boxer jingle for Kmart (and let’s not forget the earlier Satan/Genghis Khan layaway spot), McGarryBowen makes that holiday effort seem tame in comparison to its “Squirrel Revolt” ad. It wouldn’t stand out from the other two “Denskies” installments, in its “let’s be as crazy as possible” humor, were it not for the line (assuming I’m hearing this correctly), “Oh god, it’s mating with my mouth.”

The aforementioned spot (which you can watch above, though you probably shouldn’t) begins with Papa Denskie explaining to his wife that he’s trained “those pesky squirrels” to cut coupons. Everything, though, soon goes haywire, the squirrels attack the man and elicit the crazy, over-the-top response from the above paragraph. (You know, the one where the guy gets orally raped by a squirrel with a rage boner.) If people were pissed off about Kmart’s “Show Your Joe,” I can’t imagine how they’ll respond to this one.

The other two “Denskies” spots for Sears have plenty of crazy to spare as well. In “Robo Granny,” the same man builds a robotic grandmother so that the family won’t have to go visit their real, living grandmother. Predictably, chaos ensues, dragging on for way too long, with the spot clocking in at 1:23 but seeming more like a 5-minute endurance test. Meanwhile, “Medium” sees agency and client portraying their subject as some kind of crazy, possessed witch lady. I’d almost feel bad for real mediums if it weren’t for the fact that they make their living by pretending to talk to dead people (sorry, Sylvia Browne, RIP). The message from Sears this holiday season seems to be the tired “Don’t do something crazy to save time and money, shop here” approach–just with the crazy pushed well beyond the point of reason. You can check out the other two after the jump, along with credits.
